Gravatar Awesome! Scissorheads (TexBetsy at least) are on board!

I gotta go put something up over at the UC.

Who else is flogging this ideal?

Gravatar Cross posted to FDL; hopefully those fire pups can help.

Gravatar Thanks Kelly, you really know how to take a blanket permission and run with it!! Tengrain with mock paper scissors has been a great friend of this effort. Hugs and kisses back at you friend

Gravatar Hey everyone go over and recommend Kelly's post at FDL: http://oxdown.firedoglake.com/diary/6004

Gravatar I favorited it, and also Dugg it. If you have a Digg account, do the same.

BTW, while Digging the FDL post, I found this from Matthew Yglesias at Think Progress:

Conservative Canadian Senator Defends Single-Payer Health Care

" Irrespective of what lurks deep in the hearts of Canadian Tories, all leading right-of-center politicians in Canada understand that their health care system is far too popular and well-loved to seriously propose replacing it with an American-style system in which whether or not you receive treatment for an illness is determined by the whims of a for-profit insurance company. Indeed, the Conservative Party of Canada lists as one of its founding principles the idea “that all Canadians should have reasonable access to quality health care regardless of their ability to pay.”

All of which is to say that one fun way to shake up the somewhat stale health care debate would be to have a right-wing Canadian politician debate a right-wing American politician. On substance, what does this prove? Well, I think it’s noteworthy that where national health care systems exist, nobody ever seems to want to dismantle them. By contrast, you have lots of examples of countries lacking a national health care system and deciding to build one.
"

A bit of background history is in order. The Canadian health care system was introduced by Tommy Douglas, leader of a now-defunct party called the CCF (it has since morphed into the New Democratic Party) who as premier of Saskatchewan led the first socialist government in North America. He was so successful at promoting progressive ideas that the Conservative Party of Canada for decades had to re-brand themselves as The Progressive Conservatives. He was voted the greatest Canadian of all time in a 2004 CBC poll. Incidentally, he's also grandfather to Kiefer Sutherland, father-in-law to Donald Sutherland, and father of actress and progressive activist Shirley Douglas.

Gravatar Oops, got a little off-topic with that Tommy Douglas info. Sorry RevPhat.

Gravatar http://journalstar.com/articles/ ...10897364469.txt

Gonna cover this with me trusty cam!

And revphat, we gotta figure out the "how" of adding things up. I'm dragging a case of beans out to Linclon and am looking for a deal tomorrow for the mac-n-cheese single serve meals that Jenn clamors for all the time during this school lunch outage period.

The case counts for 12, and I think the mac biz counts for 12 too even thou it ain't cans.

Thoughts?

Gravatar hi all!

joe e'd me and reminded me to say hi to you-all

g-day unruly mates!!

smooches and hugs to all!!

we're in australia for one more week, then 6 days in new zealand, then home! on july 17!

Gravatar oh vry srry, rev, will take food cans when we get home.

Gravatar {{{Jenniloon}}}

Kelly, at this point I am counting the items. A case is 12 items. On the other hand I'm counting a pkg. of diapers as one even though if I took that pkg to the Rose Garden I know they'll break it into small packs of six diapers each. I'm trying to keep it simple and not get involved in numbers games.

This week I bought dinner for three families of four for less than $15:

3 - jars of pasta sauce
3 - 1 lb. pks. of pasta
3 - cans of green beans
3 - cans of pineapple
3 - pkg. brownie mix

So that's 15 items, but they'll be added to the total our church collects on Sunday.

Gravatar Kelly, I'll go ahead and at 24 to my total, bringing it to 216 items.

Gravatar On the road! Driving to Lincoln NE tomorrow at 0-dark:30. I'll be at the Capitol Building sometime around 12:00 - 2:00 cause that's when the teabagging is, and I shall ask, oh so politely what people are doing vis-a-vis hunger and their neighbors.

I am hoping that there will be actual nice answers, but, I'm kind of thinking, um, there won't be a whole lot of positive from those folks. But you never know.

Revphat - BlueGal and Susan Madrak signed up, as well as Suzie Riot and others who have been freindly to this blog - there are 111 on the facebook group as of this writing. How 'bout you tweet them or whatever else you can? I'll do so from the Lincoln machine as possible and post afterwards.

YEAAAARGH!

Gravatar G'Day Sad, great to see you're still giving the bastards heaps.

Havn't been able to access Len's site for about a week or so.

His June 22 post was quite a polemic. Would like to file it but a few seconds after getting onto the EC site it disappears and up bobs the generic error page like a prarie dog on heat.

Any clues, Comrade?

Merci, Le Fuzz.

PS This is a bodgie email addy, but you've got my old addy which is still active if you need to pow-wow off-blog.

Gravatar Great cause, just donated $20 to Loaves and Fishes in Sacramento.

Gravatar Thank's Zuzu I'll add it to our cash donations total.

Gravatar From the Facebook page, Roger from http://theviewtvreportcard.com/ reports:

Remember a little while ago when we were talking about the Million Can March?

http://unrulymob.blogspot.com/20...yes-we- can.html

Well we have been a little busy with it. Our local group, Defiance CIA has done a couple of things….. First, we contacted 2 local grocery stores Chiefs and Krogers, both have allowed us to post a contribution box to collect cans for our local food bank.

Next, One of our group members mother works at Campbell Soup. She has access to their Company store and was able to purchase cases of soup for a greatly reduced price…. we gathered 344 cans just from that store alone.

When I get a count from Krogers and Chiefs I will also report that here also.

--------------------------------------------

Thanks Roger! 344 cans!!

Gravatar Rev Phat -

I'm not sure what it comes to in cans, but so far some of the Scissorheads have raised $1,000 for local food banks. (Email - they didn't want to have their names or even noms de blog listed).

Getting totals is harder than I thought it would be.

Regards,

Tengrain

Gravatar I just dropped in $10 on the local St. Vincent website.

Gravatar Link to my post is here:

http://icestationtango.blogspot....t-out- cans.html

I left it in another thread too, so hopefully it doesn't get counted twice.

Gravatar I cannot for the life get that script to work on my blog.

What is it?

Gravatar Boyoboy I'm a dunce. C&L linked to a much older post about this, and I left a comment there without noticing the date.

$50 to Second Harvest of Tampa Bay today. And thanks for providing a great motivator. Happy 4th.

Gravatar Donated $100 to the Alameda County Foodbank. They say they can get $7 worth of food for every dollar contributed, plus they have supporters who will match the contribution:

http://www.accfb.org/ produce_cha..._challenge.html

Gravatar wordsmith, you might just go over to mock, paper, scissors and copy one of Tengrain's cans. They don't jump around so they don't cause any scripting errors.

Silleigh Not a problem. Thanks for your donation!

Tengrain, understand about wanting to be anonymous. Can I still give a hat tip to the collective scissorheads?

And thank you Station Agent!

Gravatar I See I missed acknowledging OtterQueen. So for your $100 donation, the foodbank can purchase about $1400 food!?! That's awesome. Thanks!

And now here's some "starts" to show me that I've counted ev erything above here.

************************************************** ************************************************** ************************************************** ************************************************** ************************************************** *****************

Gravatar Rev - We have another 39 cans and another $25 donation.

Yes, of course you can hat tip the Scissorheads. Thanks!

Regards,

Tengrain

Gravatar Done - earlier this week, I donated $50 to the Los Angeles Food Bank, which is an umbrella organization for the many in the area.

Gravatar Does it count if I give $20 to the 139 Club in Brisbane? They are a daytime drop-in centre.

Jenniloon is back in Oz? Coming my way?

Cheeres and hugs to the Unrulies.

Gravatar Sure does Aunty

And Happy 4th to all the Unrulies!

Gravatar Brief hello to all....Just been working a lot. SoMe sort of tiMe off soon, I hope,

That's the idea of keeping you working ,you know.....even in the entertainMent industry....

TiMe filled focused ideas good: TiMe for BSing, creative, out of box ideas bad.

Sorry for the flip atitude.
Not good lately but iMproving.

take care all

Gravatar Yay! The Scissorheads have another $200 donation to report! Sjelly came through with the loot!

(Which I think brings MPS to $1225 raised so far!)

Regards,

Tengrain

Gravatar If Australia counts then my $20 here in Canada should too. BTW, I put up a new Independence Day Open Thread up, which I wanted to post before noon, but the real world pulled me away again.

I think I should cancel my subscription to reality. It's really getting in the way of my normal life.

Gravatar Sweet!

Will report on the wingnuts upstairs in the new thread.

Gravatar 22 cans + $25 from me and one response to my email blitz of $50 from a cousin.

there may have been more but only one responded.

Gravatar Some more of the Scissorheads came through - with an interesting twist: donations of food to the animal shelters.

We also have some more money contributors (but did not announce the amount) and some that are setting up monthly contributions to their local food banks.

Regards,

Tengrain

Gravatar I collected 40 cans (asked our 4th of July party guests for donations, & they all complied), plus I am throwing in 25$. Taking it down to the local food bank (United Way, Middletown CT) today.

Good job, y'all.

Gravatar This was a great idea but the word needs to get out faster and louder. Our group, Defiance CIA (Citizens In Action) placed canisters at two local grocery stores, for donations and in addition several of our members placed an order and bought canned goods from the Campbell Co. Store for a total of 387 items. The receiving organization for our donations was St. John Lutheran's Food Pantry, on Wayne Street in Defiance, Ohio.
We chose to do something positive for ourselves while helping our community. Our service project ended with a 4th of July, Family Picnic at a local park. It feels good to be Agents for Positive Change.
