Murmur, Instigate, CLAMOR!!

Gravatar Good morning!
What a remarkable account.
It reinforces my idea that the whole thing with Catholicism is that you mustn't abort a fetus until after it's born. Then you can slap it around all you like. There's some who say you mustn't condemn them all because they do good work. Perhaps they do but they do not resist evil and yes they are all accountable together for the evil done in their name.
Wow, you!

Gravatar Kelly, You are a true polymath, in spite of the barriers that our culture and its feeble-minded adherents placed it your path.

Thanks for sharing your story.

Gravatar Morning Unrulies

Kelly, this is an awesome and powerful piece. It will resonate with so many...many of whom, unfortunately, don't read our blog. Thanks for sharing.

And Unrulies, you will appreciate that out of all the people at the HATFIELD family reunion, a family I married into, that it is me - I'm the one who is going to hell!!! This hater was explaining to me that all you have to do to get in to heaven is believe in Jesus. Well, you'd think I'd be a shoo-in. Apparently you have to believe in Jesus the right way. Damn, who knew?

Gravatar [RevPhat | Homepage | 06.23.09 - 9:06 am]

I've quoted this rural Florida bumper sticker before but I never get tired of repeating it:

Gravatar Thanks for posting this piece, Kelly.

Gravatar As the lamestream media seeks a scapegoat to blame for the Metro accident, they have latched onto a woman from the NTSB who made recommendations back in 2006 that those train cars be either replaced or retrofitted to be safer.

The dipshit "journalists" are salivating over the idea of heads rolling out of the Metro h.q. What they are avoiding like the plague is telling us that CONGRESS controls the purse strings for METRO and CONGRESS just recently cut a proposed $200 Million from the stimulus package that would have gone to Metro for upgrades and repairs.

IT TAKES MONEY TO OPERATE A SUBWAY SYSTEM.

Gravatar Nice lady who died too young. RIP.

Gravatar Oh my.

What a powerful, amazing, heart-wrenching story, Kelly.

"Take Your Mama" indeed.

So did you actually have to pay off that tuition?

Don't see how they hold a "contract" entered into with a minor.

Anyway, this story blows me away. I can see you sitting in that principal's office smoking a cig.

Gravatar [Don't see how they hold a "contract" entered into with a minor.]

I think it was a matter of not being allowed to stay if tuition has not been paid. Though come to think of it now, I hope KC managed to check at some point to make sure his parents in fact didn't pay. . .

Gravatar Literal Video! Kewl!

Gravatar More Republican Family Values™, this time with a bit of soap opera-like drama thrown in for good measure.

Breaking News Alert
The New York Times

Wednesday, June 24, 2009 -- 2:52 PM ET
-----

" COLUMBIA, S.C. — Mark Sanford, the governor of South Carolina, said he had conducted an extra-marital affair with a woman in Argentina, ending a mystery over his week-long disappearance that had infuriated lawmakers and seemed to put his rising political career in jeopardy. He apologized for the affair and the deception surrounding his trip in a rambling news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Governor Sanford, 49, admitted that he had been in Buenos Aires since Thursday, not hiking on the Appalachian Trail as his staff had said. In revealing an affair that had gone on for about a year — and which he had disclosed to his wife, Jenny, five months ago — he said: “This was selfishness on my part.”

Mr. Sanford announced on Wednesday that as a result, he was resigning his position as chairman of the Republican Governors Association. His term leading the state of South Carolina is set to go through 2011.
"

This has so many soapy overtones that I wonder if he'll come up tomorrow with some kind of excuse involving either amnesia or an evil twin. Or both - an evil twin he forgot about due to amnesia, that's the ticket. Geez, Louise how do you live something like this down, especially since he chose Father's Day to drop out of sight? What a frickin' weasel.

Gravatar Sigh, living it down might not be so hard. I actually forgot why John Ensign is in trouble this morning till I looked it up. I had a vague notion that it was a sex scandal, but I couldn't recall it accurately.

Gravatar How long before he's banging Sarah Palin?

Gravatar Aren't they all bangin' Sarah Palin? It would explain a lot.

Gravatar I see the error of my ways. I meant how long before he's caught banging Sarah Palin?

Gravatar So he goes down to Argentina to tell his mistress he's breaking it off. And it takes him what - four - five - days to accomplish that? That must have been some awesome break up sex.

Gravatar That anonymous was me...gots to take credit for that awesome comment

And btw, the literal video is totally kewl. Plus I get to tell my son about it and now he thinks I'm slightly more kewl than I was before I told him.

Gravatar Sweltering here in Ontario, right now it's near 90°F - and I'm working on putting a new brick sidewalk in my front yard. I must be mad, but I'm taking lots of breaks for hydration and the occasional swim. Thank Gawd there's a beach just up the road.

Gravatar [That must have been some awesome break up sex.]

Kind of makes me wish they'd asked him about whether he had sex during his trip at the press conference. But why are we taking him at his word about the affair, that it's a woman he met eight years ago, and that he didn't start cheating till last year? How do we know it's not a 14-year-old girl or boy that he was spending his time with, for instance? Or that he wasn't doing something that involved cocaine?

Gravatar I'm sure a ticket purchased on such short notice must have cost the SC taxpayers a lot of money, so taking five days was just a way of not wasting their money.

Gravatar I had a suspicion that is was a bit more than a head clearing hiking trip on the AT. When it was reported yesterday that his wife's response was, "I don't know where he is. I'm busy. I'm being a mom to my kids".

It had a certain defensive-I--can't-belive--this-son-of-a-bitch- has-done-this tone.

Gravatar Well I just got banned from Redstate, but not for the Million Can March. The Great Viking had a post up about Sandford and he ended his post with this quote:

Blessed is the Lord God Jehovah who brings forth bread from heaven, water from rocks, and men like Mark Sanford from the dust of the earth. His will be done.

To which I replied:

Yeah, and blessed is the Lord God Jehovah who brings forth women that have to deal with the likes of Mark Sanford.

And that got me banned!

Gravatar Too funny, RevPhat. Those RedStaters have no sense of humor. Or shame for that matter.

What gets me is the actually disappeared for SIX DAYS! Nobody apparently knew how to reach him.

He basically abandoned his job as governor, leaving no succession instructions. What if there'd been a hurricane and the National Guard and other state resources needed to be marshaled? Bet he wasn't paying the least bit of attention to the news while he banging whoever down there in "exotic" Argentina.

An executive in a private company would likely be out on his ass immediately if he/she pulled this stunt.

That said, I love the taste of schadenfreude in the afternoon!

Gravatar Gotta love the emails, wonder why the paper down there has kept them bottled up for six months? It's a McClatchy owned paper...

http://www.thestate.com/sanford/...ory/ 839350.html

Nothing unusual in there, however this was kinda funny.

“Got back an hour ago to civilization and am now in Columbia after what was for me a glorious break from reality down at the farm. No phones ringing and tangible evidence of a day's labors. Though I have started every day by 6 this morning woke at 4:30, I guess since my body knew it was the last day, and I went out and ran the excavator with lights until the sun came up. To me, and I suspect no one else on earth, there is something wonderful about listening to country music playing in the cab, air conditioner running, the hum of a huge diesel engine in the back ground, the tranquillity that comes with being in a virtual wilderness of trees and marsh, the day breaking and vibrant pink coming alive in the morning clouds - and getting to build something with each scoop of dirt.”

Good ol' boy.

Gravatar RevPhat, you put a smile on my face you banned-from-RedState-unruly you!

Gravatar [Bet he wasn't paying the least bit of attention to the news while he banging whoever down there in "exotic" Argentina.]

Come now, green, give the poor guy a break and don't jump to conclusions-- tango lessons require a great deal of effort and concentration. He was planning to proudly represent the great state of South Carolina on Dancing with the Stars.

Gravatar Hey, I was offering private salsa lessons when I visited Cuba about six years ago. ( wink, wink)

Gravatar What's amazing about the emails, is his ho-hum attitude about going out to Colorado (?) to meet with McCain and how that will just fuel speculation about him being named the vp candidate. A vp nom pales compared to Maria's tan lines.

Gravatar Yo! Hello!

What perfect timing for me to have had a Comcast failure yesterday.

Poor belch had to stay home this morning to let them in and fix the intertubes. Anyhow -

I'm BACK!

Gravatar Thanks for the supportive comments, but something you should know; I actually really failed to summarize the post correctly.

I just think of that time of my life every June, and I really sit back and wonder if it's really gotten better in the civil rights arena for gay folks, gay youth in particular.

The answer is always "yes, and no."

The irony after this election is that the answer for me this June, is that the answer is a bit "no-er" than usual, compared to the promise.

I find I have to agree with Aravosis that in many regards, gay civil rights are the canary in the coal mine for civil rights in general, and I think my canary is either dead or very very very asleep.

Given that, I have an appointment at the Rainbo House here in Denver to see if I can be qualified for their mentor program.

I haven't told belch yet; I'll wait to see what the qualifying says before I talk with him about it. But one thing is for damn sure; I'm going to positively change at least one kids life. Hell or high water.

Gravatar " Fox identifies Sanford as a Democrat, of course.

[-tireiron chef | Homepage | 06.24.09 - 10:44 pm-]

Well everybody knows that the D's can't keep it in their pants. Fox also identified Mark Foley as a Dem, and a couple other Republicans that were caught in scandal. It's the way they roll over at Fixed Noise.

Gravatar Kelly, the US has a number of dead canaries already on civil rights issues, the writ of habeas corpus not the least among them. You might as well throw the issue of gay rights on the pile of colorful feathered corpses.

Gravatar Yes, I know that there were other Repugs so identified previously. For some reason this time it just seemed so much more egregious--maybe it's just that to me this seems to be the tipping point that serves as pretty much absolute proof that it's intentional.

Gravatar SBT - no kidding.

Which is why I was so furiously posting post-primary about the damn FISA bill.

But what was one supposed to do at that time? Vote McCain? No way.

The craven political calculus stuns me.

They were werking hard to put food on your family.

Ingrates.

Gravatar I just ate the most disgusting/delicious thing I ever prepared for myself. BBQ pork ribs.

Never, ever been a ribs fan. Too much on the carnivore neanderthal side, what with the bones and chewing around them and all.

Not to mention the fat and gristle, which I despise.

But by neighbor stopped by and said "I've got these pork ribs that have been marinating for a couple of days, and REALLY need to be cooked before... I'm too busy tonight. You want 'em?"

OK then, sure.

Probably won't be doing that again any time soon, but damn that marinade he had 'em in... sweet, hot, spicy, tingly, very nice.

Gravatar Kelly, last saturday at my daughter's dance recital, one of the mom's there remarked about a dance kid, a boy, maybe 14, who had decided to "come out". (Big surprise, boy dancer who's gay.)

Anyway, I told her about the gay youth center here in town, Odyssey, that one of my friends volunteers at, and is on their board. He's also the PFLAG guy here in town, his daughter's a lesbian and got married in CA when it was cool.

At the end of our conversation, I asked her again, "you remember the name of that gay teen center right, to tell that boy about?" "Yes, she said. Odyssey." Good, I said. It's REALLY hard for those kids, they need support. Please do tell him about that place. "Oh I will" she said.

Gravatar Good for you Green. It may make it a wee bit easier for the kid.

Mr. Praline : I'll tell you what's wrong with it, my lad. It's dead, that's what's wrong with it.

Owner : No, no, 'e's ah... he's resting.

Mr. Praline : Look, matey, I know a dead parrot when I see one, and I'm looking at one right now.

Owner : No no, h-he's not dead, he's, he's restin'!

Mr. Praline : Restin'?

Owner : Y-yeah, restin.' Remarkable bird, the Norwegian Blue, isn't it, eh? Beautiful plumage!

Gravatar I am taunting you

Gravatar I just think of that time of my life every June, and I really sit back and wonder if it's really gotten better in the civil rights arena for gay folks, gay youth in particular.

The answer is always "yes, and no."

Kelly Canfield | Homepage | 06.24.09 - 11:00 pm | #

I disagree - it is a lot easier for gay youth. With the Gay-Straight Alliances in high schools, the services for "discarded" gay and lesbian teens (I don't use the term 'run-away' because that is not usually the case), the anti-bullying efforts popping up around the country, the positive images in popular media (ok, the images aren't exactly positive, but at least they are no longer exclusively negative), etc. etc. etc. I think it has gotten a LOT better for gay youth.

Gravatar I forgot - there are positive images and role models emerging - like Rachel Maddow.

Gravatar Gary SF | Homepage | 06.24.09 - 11:57 pm

Well, I said Yes and No - yes there are positive images/role models. But are they available to YOU, the GAY KID NOW, and WHERE you are?

I think in terms of the qualifier; easier. That doesn't mean it's truly qualitatively "better".

It just means not as shitty as it was and it's still shitty. And as you note, there are "discarded" teens. To me it's not better until there are no "discards."

Gravatar Yeah but...

If you were 17 today and came out and you were 'discarded' you can get some help. I have hearc that there are organizations that actually work with hateful parents.

Think of it as a visit from the Man from GLAAD

Gravatar BTW, I'm predicting that Obama will begin working on repealing DADT and issue an executive order to halt the enforcement of DADT before his August vacation.

Bet?

Gravatar It's better, but not yet good.

My daughter's at a pretty uptight Jesuit prep school. And yeah, "that's so gay" is still a common slur for just about anything.

But there are out gay kids there at that school, and they're not universally rebuked, let alone attacked for being gay.

I know. Maybe insignificant changes. But I don't think so for those kids.

Gravatar "Man from Glad" what a hoot!

Had to be a take-off on Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Gravatar Gary/Green - I read you both and agree with what you're saying, which is essentially there is more resource, but there is still a lot of challenge.

I concur. It's the "incremental gains are better than no gains" course with which one cannot disagree.

I am looking through the lens of 30 years, finding that the incremental gains are hardly satisfactory. Brandon Tina was only a few years ago, and that was a REPORTED story. There are so many unreported stories.

Carlton Figueroa in my town. No news article, no link. The kid was killed; I'm sure it was a hate crime as the community is telling me his body was found at one of the whore spots in town. Head bashed in. 19 years old. Happened a couple weeks ago.

Gravatar Why was I thinking Rio?

You are correct oh great Karnak

Gravatar I'm not sure that canary in the coal mine is an accurate analogy; a canary is a warning sign of something dangerous affecting the status quo--that is, poison gas contaminating good air--whereas equality being withheld is a maintaining of the status quo.

I'd also have to say that things have gotten better, that it's a definite yes rather than a yes-and-no. I'm reminded of Thurgood Marshall's press conference when he announced his retirement from the SC. Someone asked him if he thought things were better for black people then than when he first started. (Interestingly, the first thing he did was take the young white questioner to task for using the term black people--he preferred "Negro" or "Afro-American," and yes, I think he said "Afro-American" rather than "African American.") Marshall basically told him it was a stupid question, because things in the US were better for everyone than they were some twenty odd years earlier.

I don't remember the rest of his answer; I imagine he must have talked about how racial inequalities persisted, and how there had been setbacks. But the main point was that yes, things were better.

Gravatar Why wouldn't you think Rio? It's gotta be a gas!

tireiron chef | Homepage | 06.25.09 - 12:51 am

OK, disagree with the canary thing. I concede things are "better" but by how much is the question I pose. There truly are popular and trendy gay kids out there, with family backing and peer backing which is probably most important.

I really don't think it's very much better for those who are out or become outed prior to the age they can take care of themselves from homes who despise them. Having been a street kid for that time, I see them everywhere. In fact, I'm pretty sure I see more rather than less.

So hooray for some, with privileges, and tough shit for a bunch more, who have no privileges is what I'm seeing.

How much "better" that is, I don't really know.

Gravatar green libertarian | 06.25.09 - 12:58 am | #

Yeah, I love watching those kids. I sometimes use their videos at work.

Gravatar Durian? Never heard of it before wiki'ing it just now. No thanks. I remain, in many ways, a picky eater.

Chef Andrew Zimmern compares the taste to "completely rotten, mushy onions."[21] Anthony Bourdain, while a lover of durian, relates his encounter with the fruit as thus: "Its taste can only be described as...indescribable, something you will either love or despise. ...Your breath will smell as if you'd been French-kissing your dead grandmother."[22] Travel and food writer Richard Sterling says:
“ ... its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away. Despite its great local popularity, the raw fruit is forbidden from some establishments such as hotels, subways and airports, including public transportation in Southeast Asia.[23]

Gravatar Or the Viagra caused one of those 4 hour erections, causing a visit to the ER, or should I say Sala de Urgencia.

http://slog.thestranger.com/slog...us-little- brats

What's the opposite of a canary in a coal mine? That's what I think is a more accurate measure of progress. Like the fact that at state would approve civil unions in 2001 was a sign of good things to come.

Gravatar I've had durian a few times. It's kind of creamy and sweet. I don't think it's as stinky as it used to be--maybe what they import are frozen ones, and they don't smell as a result.

Gravatar One other thing occurs to me as I'm trying to make my transformation to one persona, off-line and on-line, work and personal lifes combined to completion, is this:

Gravatar Batik fabric is lovely. Some of the Caribbean islands have taken it up, espectially St. Kitts & Nevis. Time-consuming, ornamental, restful, artisinal, not-ready-for-the-mainland pace. We could do the time warp and all be hippies again but . . . too many bills!
Good morning!

Gravatar RIP Farrah Fawcett.

I can't get into Facebook anymore. I had just signed up a week or so ago, thought it a rather confusing interface, but anyway, now I only get a sign on screen that's all whacked out with squares containing numbers.

Gravatar " screen that's all whacked out with squares containing numbers. "

Your browser is set up for the wrong character set encoding for that site, probably the default ISO. In Firefox*, go into the VIEW menu and change it to Unicode ( UTF 8 ) - you'll probably get better results, especially with sites that acknowledge that THERE ARE OTHER LANGUAGES BESIDES AMERICAN ENGLISH. I am painfully aware of this due to the accented letter in Enragés. A lot of places that are unaware of character encoding just can't display our name correctly, and resort to calling us the unruly mob.

* - There are similar tweaks in other browsers, usually under the VIEW menu.

Green, Scalable Vector Graphics, was Adopey's attempt at making the jpg go away. The intention was to use SVG's inside of web pages, in lieu of jpg's, png's or bmp's (which all pretty much render shitty).

Problem was that outside of a web page you needed an SVG viewer to see 'em. Most people didn't understand and also got frustrated when they couldn't easily view them. So, like the betamax, they went away.

I used them a whole bunch, because I hate the way the other formats look - all pixelated and stuff.

Hey Rev, have we given any thought to contacting one of her producers?

IMHO, I suspect they are easier to reach out and touch.

Gravatar Vanessa Silverton-Peel is the executive producer of the show.

There is also 2 telephone numbers into Media Relations at MSNBC
Gina Stikes-Shoehalter 212.664.4703
212.664.6605

As an additional thought, we might contact one of the upcoming guest and see if they can/would intercede on our behalf.

Gravatar Mark Sanford definitely is a criminal.

Adultery is a crime in South Carolina. Via Think Progress:

Any man or woman who shall be guilty of the crime of adultery or fornication shall be liable to indictment and, on conviction, shall be severally punished

Gravatar Watching Olbermann. He noted that Jackson's career was roughly twice as long as John Lennon's and Elvis Presley's each were.

Whatever controversies Jackson was involved in, he was an amazing performer who put a huge imprint on American culture.

And it's occurred to me that Mark Sanford must be really pissed that he didn't stay one more day in Argentina before returning for his press conference.

Gravatar Somebody's running for reelection. . . .
Speaking moments ago to a large and animated crowd of union organizers and health reform advocates in a brewing house just North of the Capitol, Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) said he supports a public insurance option.

Thanks for those tips SBT, though it didn't work for me.

Odd thing was, when Firefox first started doing it, it still worked in IE for a few hours.

WTH, probably just need to reboot.

----------------------------

Michael Jackson certainly was an oddity, a real product of his screwy family, incredible fame and fortune, and mental illness bordering on genius as is oft the case.

I remember seeing Thriller before the main movie we had come to see, which was Field of Dreams. Both blew me away.

Gravatar "Beat It": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U...h? v=Uqxo1SKB0z8

Some interesting things about this song, according to Wikipedia:
1. Eddie Van Halen provided some of the guitar.
2. Dexy's Midnight Runner's knocked it off the number one spot with their only hit, though Beat It regained the top spot the following week.

Ah, the eighties. . .

Gravatar Eddie's guitar play was immediately recognizable, had been following him and the band since he was playing high schools in so. cal. in the late 70's.

Gravatar Michael's Influence on modern dance is unparalleled. He paved the way for The Fly Girls and laid the foundation for all modern hip-hop dance.

Gravatar And we wouldn't have had this without Michael Jackson.

Gravatar MJ had immeasurable talent. It's disappointing and sad that he squandered it all by going batshit crazy.

Gravatar Wow, I wonder how long they've been holding this over Rep. Conyers.

Monica Conyers, the president pro tem of the Detroit city council -- and the wife of Rep. John Conyers, the powerful chair of the US House Judiciary committee -- has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery, which is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Gravatar Hey, CC!
That sounds like a fun read. I'll pick it up in due time and read it. There's nothing like Mayan ball court stories! All to save the world from disaster in the mystic year 2012! (Between you and me, I'm doubtful that disaster can be averted. )

Gravatar http://www.medindia.net/news/Adv...ood-53583- 1.htm

I am continually astounded by the indifference from the general public about what is happening to our food and water sources. The longer we ignore that there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with food production world wide, the worse our health is going to become. But hey, what's on sale at Walmart today?

Gravatar Indigo | Homepage | 06.26.09 - 2:12 pm | #

Prior to reading the book, I would have called BS for the 2012 thing.

Now, I've modified my position.

Gravatar Comprehensive Comprehender | 06.26.09 - 4:44 pm

The end of the Mayan Long Count on December 21, 2012 is a real event. What happens the next day is the start of the next Long Count. However . . . the event will be marked astrologically by a remarkable void in the center of the astrological universe such as has not been seen in more than 4,000 years. It'll definitely jangle the tides, who knows what more . . . ? The difference between this event and Y2K is that Y2K was based on a count from the mythology surrounding the birth of Jesus. This is based on the observable motion of the stars and will resonate inside the divinatory constructions of astrology. I'm looking forward to it.

Gravatar So if a Catholic priest dies and he was one of many who molested dozens of little boys (possibly ruining the lives of some of those boys), but he happened to be an awesome singer, would we make the fuss over his death that we seem to be making over the death of the child-molesting Michael Jackson?

So are we saying to the molested boys that our culture sees their assholes as appropriate sacrifice and price to pay for us to enjoy a great entertainer?

Our culture is beyond repair. Fuck Michel Jackson and his fucked-up parents. 100 little boy's assholes will probably remain intact due to his early demise. Good riddance.

Thanks for letting me get this off my chest.

Continue to mourn.

Gravatar I agree, Gary. I never liked MJ much myself, except maybe when he was about eight years old. People tend way too much to hang hero status on entertainers, athletes, anybody famous. How many of the O.J. Simpson and Michael Vicks ilk do there have to be before everybody realizes that they're just people like the rest of us, some of them pretty nice, some of them not at all.

Gravatar Re: Jackson, since we're nearly the same age, I never really cared for him, except for later and looking back.

I actually now really like that song "I want You Back." And I was/am ok with the performance in "The Wiz" but after that, I thought he helped propel music into the "visual abyss."

While I'm used to it now, back in the day once I saw "Video Killed The Radio Star" I believed it, literally, because, it's true. Hell, you have to be good looking/telegenic to publish a frikking book anymore these days.

Gravatar BTW - fresh thread ^^^^^^
