hi, El
From the beginning when I heard about some of the 'people', well they pass for people at any rate, behind Obama I was scared honestly and am still quite worried.
Who knows what will be unleashed on humanity next!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l...e.blogspot.com/
Anyone paying attention to the new powers Obama's plan gives the Federal Reserve? Some people are going into hyper drive on the net. Ron Paul said this on MSNBC,

Prison planet has had a couple of posts on the new regulatory powers of the Fed too. Of course some of the posts/reply's are priceless!!

The UK and Europe seem to be headed for this path as "coincidentally", they have the same type of power expansion to their respective versions on the Fed or so I have been reading.

World's oldest man:
...
That mantle has now passed to Mr Allingham – the first time a British person has ever held such a title.
A St Dunstan's spokesman said that the oldest man on Earth greeted the news by simply returning to bed after breakfast for a celebratory nap.
For someone who has seen three different centuries, six monarchs, two world wars (and 18 world cups), becoming the oldest living man is, perhaps, something of a non-event.
Mr Allingham is quieter these days, but no codger at heart. In contrast to Mr Tanabe's asceticism, he attributes his longevity to "cigarettes, whisky and wild, wild women".
The Air Mechanic First Class is best known publicly for his war record, because of the many public engagements he has attended – up to 70 some years – including regular meetings with the Queen, politicians and soldiers returning from theatres of war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Yet he dislikes talking about conflict, saying only: "War's stupid. Nobody wins."
He added in an interview recently: "Like so many, I have tried to forget my time in the war. In the last few years I have met other veterans, and we never spoke one word of the war, not one."
One of the many remarkable things about him – particularly given the mores of his time – has been his willingness to talk about mental health. "I've had two major breakdowns," he recalled, "one during the war and one after. But both when I was trying to do the work of three men.
"The trick is to look after yourself and always know your limitations."

TC and Indigo, I agree with both of you...but if nothing else, for such an unruly bunch here, we did take the high road. Which really doesn't have to be all that high...here's my first anti-food drive response:
Hey, RevPat;
I have been to a couple of these ‘Tea Party’ get togethers, and found them to be very refreshing. They consist of engaged Citizens who care about the Constitution and take the time out of their productive days to voice their opinions.
You would be surprised at how many people in small agriculture are engaging in these discussions. So I would respectfully request that before you get on the high horse about guillotines, counter-protests, and cans of Spaghetti-O’s, you seek common ground with those people who have to struggle with the new intrusive rules the Obama Administration is imposing on family farms. Farms are where the stuff in the can comes from.
And here was my response:
BoB, you must not have attended the tea party here in Cincy. I didn’t find it all refreshing when the party goers starting shoving the news media. Didn’t catch any of their refreshing language, so can’t relay that on to you.
So you continue your research into farms and stuff, I’ll be taking my little bags of groceries over to the Welcome House. The children don’t have time for everyone to reach common ground before they eat.

Interesting message. Of course, the whole point of the post at Red State was to offer common ground--but this person's idea of common ground is to come to the tea party and be convinced. Moreover, the purpose of the MCM is to make food available to those who need it, which is something that the writer clearly seems uninterested in.

Just to be clear, the poster I quoted above is not from Redstate...I posted about the MCM on Balloon-Juice.com and he must troll over there. But he is the first one to poo-poo a food drive.
Now at Redstate, I applied for an account and received one automatically. Then there's a place where you can post your own diaries. I decided to go that route - which I figure is more polite than just spamming their threads or waiting for an open thread of which there hasn't been one since I began checking around 9 am this morning.
Here's what I'm trying to get posted. It's still under review. Maybe their slow readers. Maybe the 10 or 11 diaries posted since I submitted mine were all submitted weeks ago and they're just getting to them. Maybe.
Why dump a million teabags at some government office where they’ll just end up in the trash? People are out of work and hungry. Our nation’s food banks are stretched thin. It’s time to do more.
Liberal bloggers are supporting the Million Can March and are up to the challenge of donating one million cans of food to our nation’s pantries by July 4th. (Although to be fair, they aren’t promising not to laugh at your funny teabag hats.) But hungry people need something to wash all that food down with. You all like tea. Hungry people like tea. Why not join in the party by bringing the drinks to your July 4th tea parties?
You can read about the Million Can March here.
I hope you’ll join in because we’re all in this together.

Wow! State Rep. Cynthia Davis, R-O’Fallon, Missouri, says that hungry childlren can be a postive motivator for parents to get a job. And if parents don't know how to serve nutritious meals for their children, she's there to help them out with these priceless tips:
• “Families may economize by choosing not to waste hard earned dollars on potato chips, ice cream or Twinkies.”
• “Laid-off parents could adapt by preparing more home cooked meals rather than going out to eat.”
• “Tip: If you work for McDonald’s, they will feed you for free during your break.”
And, no, I haven't heard from Redstate. Obviously I'm no holding my breath either.

Wonder how McDonald's feels about that bit of advice given on their behalf.
I like the idea of inclusiveness and seeking common ground, and didn't want to be too negative about prospects, even though probably none of us expect much to come of the Red State post. But I think that the politician's advice is reflective of the way the teabaggers think, which is that everyone has absolute control over their circumstances (hence, the very idea behind the tea parties: Obama is the socialist who's going to take away that self-determination). So the idea of the Million Can March is antithetical to their principles, because why should they spend their hard-earned money that they pay too many taxes on already to buy food for people too lazy to provide for themselves and their families?

Today is the solstice of a difficult summer. Jupiter is reversed until October 13. A new moon tomorrow (Monday, June 22) starts a fresh lunar month with an eclipse followed by another eclipse on the last day of the lunar month (July 21). The dark energies of these two unfortunately aspected eclipses unsettle clear thinking with cosmic results that are likely to signal an entirely different direction from the generous hopes that have washed across the world so far this year. Notice that the hopes have come to nothing, now the hopes begin to crumble away. It's a good time to go on hiatus, meditate in silence , take up an outdoor hobbdy.

Morning Unrulies
It's been nearly 24 hours since I submitted by diary to Redstate. Over 20 member diaries have been posted since mine was submitted for review.
Also I just realized I didn't link my story to the MO state rep's nutrition tips. The comments certainly add weight to TC's observations about repukes not want to help out a bunch of fat and lazy welfare mothers.
Green Lib, seems like the article mentioned she was in support of churches feeding the poor rather than taxpayer money. One problem, though, is that folks are trying to combine church provided summer programming with gov't provided meals. So it isn't so cut and dry. I know our church couldn't keep up with the need. And while the mega churches get the publicity, the vast majority of churches are like mine: small and strong. But they can only make a loaf of bread go so far.

I want to say a couple of things about the alleged and so called, New World Oder/One World Gov., being trumpeted of late or being summarily dismissed. To me, a One World Gov., first of all is a joke and second, never will happen. Hell, people cannot get along that live in the same neighborhoods; people do not get along from county to county or state to state for that matter. And it can be easily seen by googling wars that those that are ruining, I mean running countries and the banks for that matter, cannot get along either. So maybe peace/prosperity of humanity is not the true objective of this so called, New World Order, in the first place.
I personally do NOT care what they do, what money they make us use, what wars they start or lies they tell either. I laugh at these megalomaniacs, I find it all entertaining and cannot take them seriously because they seem to think that they can fool history. History has laid waste to and marked millions of us as fools for the ages, humbled many nations and erased civilizations.
So if they think they can pull off some grand scheme of some kind of New World Order/One World Gov., I say it is interesting watching a Don Quixote, Quixotism complex, unfold on such a grand scale. I will not panic or resist, I will sit with my popcorn and watch the dramas on my mini-Roman style amphitheater, the TV, with rapt, unflinching attentiveness!! Given the true state of affairs with humanity, I doubt they have that much time left to complete the mission any way!!
For the record I find the belittling attitudes that some self aggrandizing/pseudo-intellectual people have towards people who panic and worry about the obvious moves towards one world gov./banking just as dismissible as the attempts to establish a one world gov./banking system.
I think same thing about those that have criticisms of the 911 truth movement as well. Rather I agree w/someones position or not, ad hominem attacks are something I try not to do and find unappealing at the least.
I guess herd mentality/conformity is contagious even for those self described brilliant, intellectual types.

I suspect it's because we're assuming that our windows and buildings are perfectly situated along the geographic grid when it fact they are a couple of degrees rotated in one or another direction. The sun I saw this morning came up from what I take to be due east, but that can't be east, because we're all somewhat north of the Tropic of Cancer. So I was probably looking at something southeast, or east southeast.

[-tireiron chef | Homepage | 06.21.09 - 11:35 am and 4:53 pm-]
Wrong. The sun really does go up and come down considerably north of due east and west respectively this time of the year, and considerably south of those points in the winter. It's a consequence of the Earth's axis being tilted towards the sun.
Above the arctic circle the sun 'goes down' so far north of due west that it doesn't go down at all, because it has already come up just that far north of due east. The land of the midnight sun and all that.
If you were right on the Tropic of Cancer the summer solstice would be remarkable for the fact that the sun would be directly overhead at noon (Zenith.)

Wow, that's a cool video!
As for the sun, I understand that it seems to move north and south as the seasons change, but I had been under the impression that on any given day, it seemed to move directly from east to west, since it's at a particular latitude that day (which I suppose actually changes gradually as the earth revolves around the sun.

You and Michael seem to be resurrecting one of my ancestor's (Ptolemy) theories - that the sun 'moves' around the earth.
I thought that Copernican theory had replaced the Ptolemaic theory in modern science and in the global, shared cultural understanding of our place in relationship to the sun.

OK, one more post about that song. The second video posted with the same song was created by the song's composer. Here is the here is the dope about the song, and it's lyrics.
The song is “Praan” by Gary Schyman, and the lyrics are from the poem The Stream of Life by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore.
The same stream of life that runs through my veins night and day runs through the world and dances in rhythmic measures.
It is the same life that shoots in joy through the dust of the earth in numberless blades of grass and breaks into tumultuous waves of leaves and flowers.
It is the same life that is rocked in the ocean-cradle of birth and of death, in ebb and in flow.
I feel my limbs are made glorious by the touch of this world of life. And my pride is from the life-throb of ages dancing in my blood this moment.
Fucking awesome, no?

It's probably just me and my cynical pov, but I am really quite suspcious of the 24 /7 non-stop coverage of the protests in Iran. The corporate owned/conservative led media NEVER EVER tell the truth (half of a lie is still a lie), the United States NEVER, EVER backs the correct side in a struggle, and since when does the U.S. side with PROTESTERS and not the millitias/paramilitaries/national police?
I am also very suspicious of the "citizen journalism" and all that video tape on CNN. How do we know these reports are coming from ordinary Iranians? How do we know where these videos are coming from? Some of the video I saw on CNN yesterday looked too professional to be some Joe with a cellphone camera-- wide, wide angles zooming out to incredibly long stretches of several city blocks, very steady, no jostling or banging about like someone in a crowd of people, most of the angles looked like they were taken from a rooftop.
I support the people of Iran, butI'm just saying that we should not swallow all that is showing up on our airwaves without first testing it for poison.

This is what I think and, 'know' from watching videos via twitter, you tube, and other places.
CNN has "glossed" them up. They've taken 'pieces & parts' and are presenting a collage of different videos. Outside of the first couple of days when journalists and their Iranians photographers/camera folk, most of what (if not all) I've seen lately has been grainy and wobbly.

And yet, contrary to the caricature, the demonstrators around me represented an impressive cross-section of Iranian society. The crowd in Azadi Street was dominated by young people, and many of the girls wore the regulation black maghna’eh, or hooded cloak, that they wear in class. There were also elderly men and women, and families whose dress and appearance suggested that they had come from modest precincts of Tehran or the provinces. I saw a friend who has a government job. She had left work early, along with ten of her colleagues, and with the permission of her supervisor. We passed a government office building where employees were leaning out the windows, waving. I don’t think much work got done in Tehran on June 15th.

You think the U.S. meddles in EVERY election around the world? What would be the point here? (Even if we are talking CIA, etc.) We don't have the resources to go to war over Iran. This country is finished if we spend any time focusing resources propping up some other puppet.

We do meddle in quite a few elections-- the ones I know most about are in Latin America.
Of course we don't have resources to go to war with anybody else, and I think that's what Obama is trying to avoid. But it's not always about simply going to war-- it's about insurance that countries will bend to our will and give us the oil, water, or war resources we want/need. You don't have to go to war with a country if they have malleable leaders.

I see that stuff on the cable channels, which acknowledge that what they're reporting is unconfirmed, so there's contemporary journalism for you. Two observations about the reportage:
1) If only they'd give this kind of sympathetic coverage to American protesters demonstrating against entrenched interests and their manipulations.
2) There seems to be an oversimpliflying of the contending sides in Iran, as if--assuming that Moussavi did win the election and therefore is on the side of democracy--simply by being pro-democracy, one supports American conceptions of "democracy" and "freedom." Moussavi is, one hopes for the sake of Iranians, pro-Iran, and Iran's interests don't necessarily align with established American interests. In fact, I think the Obama administration has stated that in some ways, it expects the American policy toward Iran to change little regardless of whether it's Moussavi or Ahmadinejad in the presidency.

Oh, OK, good to hear it Ellie. Whew! So you might have been on that train then, but would have gotten off just in time, sorta. Imagine that. Imagine the people who got off that train at the last stop before the crash... heavy.
Whereabouts are ya in bankrupt CA? Hopefully not the central valley, but that'd be my first guess, based on your work.
It's like freaking early April around here. I think the high was maybe 56. Noticed that several neighbors had their fireplaces/woodstoves going yesterday.

Near as I can tell, Moussavi lines up with the slightly less conservative forces in Iran, especially the young people who like American/western culture and entertainment to some degree.
It's troubling if the election fraud is as pervasive as some are claiming, but hell, that kind of shit happens everywhere and often.

As regards the elections in Iran, reporting, and journalism in GENERAL, I can only offer this;
I find I continually waffle back and forth between cynicism and skepticsm. I find the skepticism healthy, but the cynicsm not so useful, verging on grinding.
Given the quality of journalism we have, my personal result tilts toward the cynicism so often it makes me wonder that the problem really isn't me, and that the resulting cynicism I feel is a feature, not a bug, of the journalism we get.
While serious people may poo-poo blogging, I say BLOG ON! It's better than nothing!

Buzzing around the Central Valley, Kelly. You know, I hang out in rural America, and the recession in some of these rural communities is unreal-- some are suffering from unemployment rates as high as 40%.
The drought in the Central Valley has left 40,000 farmworkers out of work, and that number is projected to go as high as 60,000. With that many farmworkers out of work (not because of mechanization), we may have some serious food security issues in the very near future.

Tireiron-- I totally agree about the over-simplifying the Iran issue on our media. I was stuck at JFK airport for 8 hours on Sunday, and the tv stations were on CNN--- honest to dawg, I don't know what keeps those "reporters" from dropping of exhaustion over too many orgasms. It was nothing but Iran protests every second of every one of the 8 hours of the wait. Yet, they didn't offer anything but overly diluted "analysis" that really told us nothing new.
And yes, why didn't they report on the anti war protests a few years ago like they are reporting these protests? There were MILLIONS of people around the world in those protests, yet it was never given more than a 15 second "story" with zero "analysis".
And furthermore, there are indigenous people in Peru at this very moment that are being murdered and brutally abused for protesting the US/Peru Free Trade Agreement. Nineteen people have been killed by their military and hundreds more have been beaten. Where's the 24/7 coverage there?

I know what you mean sister - I used to watch the Colorado flow through to the shrimp beds at the top of the Sea of Coronado, and used to fish them myself as a youngun.
I saw them dry up, and go brackish and 1000s of Mexican shrimpers lose their livelihoods.
Via water policy in the West, we've been very busy creating food and employment problems for quite some time now. On both sides of the border, and beating up on Mexicans whom we've robbed over that very issue.
Simply maddening.

I don't know why I can't access the original C&L post, but scroll down Howie Klein's (former President of Reprise Records (who knew?)) Down with Tyranny post to the excellent version of the B-52's Party Out of Bounds political statement.

Oh dear. I'm watching Bill Maher and he has the McCain bimbo on. I've never really heard or seen her before. She's as empty headed a person as I've seen. But that is really funny, because she is apparently the spokeswoman for young Republican women.

Howie's just frikkin GREAT! Weirdly over time, I keep running into Howie Klein in whatever "press", first from the radio & punk thing. Then years later when he became El Presidente and then came OUT!
Since then, he's conquered cancer which I think is why he and Jane Hamsher and Amato are all so close.
He's also an India-phile, with a hint of LSD in his past.
The guy is totally on my list for a "Dinner With Andre" life experience. Would be fantastic to nosh with.

No you're not ignorant. It's just not of primary interest to you, like it is to me. So it makes sense that I know, and you wouldn't necessarily pick it up.
Truth be told, regarding bloggers, I'd rather nosh with SBT (not gay) before noshing with Howie.
SBT has some similar music performance (Bars & Gigs) stories that I'd love to compare notes with. And he knows all these cool places where you can get damn fine Hindi food and Elephant Rides. (find that link yourself - !!!!)

Well, I've read Down with Tyranny from time to time, and liked it, it actually matters not to me if Howie is gay or not, but, well, if he's helping the gay rights movement, if he's helping the progressive movement, if he' pointing out the rank hypocrisy that is extent, than that's a damn good thing.

Green - Howie's actually a pretty good congress race predictor too. Not as good as Nate Silver, but he gets really good info.
And also, beloved by me, probably alone, Ken In NY is one of his co-bloggers, who somehow (haven't figured out how) works with NY's Opera Community, so sometimes there are some excellent opera posts there.
More info nobody gives a shit about!

Speaking of the McCains, whatever the US government may or may not be doing in Iran and whatever degree Obama may or may not have approved of it, if you want to be scared shitless, imagine what John McCain might be doing if he had been elected. Like the other R-thugs, he wants the US to intervene in Iran AND he wants the US to board North Korean ships.

ship
Just think. Under McCain, we'd be fighing in Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, and North Korea. And we'd probably also be fighting Russia by being involved in Georgia, with an invasion of Cuba and Venezuela in the works.
