Murmur, Instigate, CLAMOR!!

Gravatar I see nothing wrong with acrobatics in marriage. Gay or straight.

Spice of life, don't cha know.

Gravatar Neither do I - you just can't let the ropes get in the way.

Gravatar And just a note; I've decided that it's just way too important to me anymore to be anything but myself all the time.

Out about all issues and so forth, including identity as it's less fractious for me personally, and will probably make me keep more of a civil tongue as well as respect for others viewpoints if I shed the moniker.

Although I LOVE UC. I really do. He's nuts.

Nonetheless, it will take some time to get past the baby steps to become a completely unified on-line and meat-world persona, and I'll be working on some sort of new on-line branding, but that's all secondary to the main issue, which is ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Anyhow, coming out is a process, not an event even after these damn near thirty years. So here I am and remain -

Kelly Canfield
Denver, CO

Gravatar Nice post, Kelly. I linked to it over at NON.

Gravatar Smooch Gar!

Gravatar Wish you the best, of course UC/Kelly/Flat.

Peace be with you,

Gravatar Thanks GL.

It'll take a while to find a unified voice, but I'll get there. Frankly, it should be FUN!

Gravatar Interesting - I posted this same thing over at FDL and it's now in the Top 10 in their rec'd Oxdown Gazette entries.

Gravatar Good for ya, Kelly - I hope you get a lot of hits over at Firedoglake. And that video is frickin' hilarious!

I have to admit this is not an issue I'm personally that interested in, not because it's a gay issue so much as because it's a marriage issue. I've never been married myself, I see it as primarily an outdated religious ritual, so who cares beyond the fundamental human rights/fairness aspect of it?

Taken in that perspective I think the DOMA-DADT movement is part and parcel with the wingnuts who oppose reproductive choice. (and who could deny that that isn't a fundamentally heterosexual issue?) It's just pure Orwellian two-minute hate stuff, designed to stimulate the lizard brain stems of the adherents and make them feel like they're part of the same tribe. It's so primitive one wonders why they can still find anyone dumb enough to fall for it - but then nobody ever went broke underestimating the public's intelligence.

Gravatar Ralph Nader wouldn't have been so crass.

This is a disappointing development. It's clear now that Obama is no friend to the gay community, does not support equal rights, probably doesn't grasp what the issue is. How can that be? He is surrounded by incrementalists who have no sense of urgency about equal rights.

This is an easy fix, though. We live as we have, we name the enemies outloud, and we continue to agitate and subvert establishmentarianism where it rears its ugly head. This will not be an easy struggle, it means a vast paradigm shift in expectations but also in clearing away the debris of lost liberalism. The Democrats sidelined themselves. They are not the solution, they are part of the problem.

Obama, a one term wonder like Carter, has no real impact on policy, he can be side-lined now. We ask nothing of him more than to put in his time and go gracefully at the end of his first and only term. There's no place for us in his inn and there's no place for him in our hearts or in our pockebooks.

How can it be a good morning when citizens are denied equal rights?

Gravatar Would be interesting to see an Obama speech or town hall where SSM supporters stay in the audience for the first five minutes or whatever, enough for Obama to get into a groove, then just all walk out. It'd be quiet, yet cause a ripple, and then there'd be a lot of empty seats.

Gravatar Yoo-hoo, UC:

A convicted terrorist can sue a former Bush administration lawyer for drafting the legal theories that led to his alleged torture, ruled a federal judge has ruled who said he was trying to balance a clash between war and the defense of personal freedoms.

The order by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White of San Francisco is the first time a government lawyer has been held potentially liable for the abuse of detainees.

White refused to dismiss Jose Padilla's lawsuit against former senior Justice Department official John Yoo on Friday. Yoo wrote memos on interrogation, detention and presidential powers for the department's Office of Legal Counsel from 2001 to 2003.

Gravatar I had no idea that the U of Washington had Robert Gates address its graduating class. Why the hell would anyone want Robert Gates as the graduation speaker? A few years ago they had Sherman Alexie, who was probably pretty good. I'd have rather have had James Franco, whom UCLA's whiny seniors rejected, at UW, if I were graduating there.

Gravatar Kelly, well done. Excellent post. If you get a chance, please post that on IST.

Gravatar Oh, and the replacement for Franco was Brad Delson. Who? Why, he's the guitarist for the band Linkin Park. The guitarist for who?

Yep.

Gravatar I just did a synopsis of the reasons so many of us are pissed about the Obama administration's defense of DOMA on Not One Nickel.

Of course, I link to Kelly's post here.

Gravatar TC,
I thought Peter Townsend was guitarist for The Who.

Gravatar station agent | Homepage | 06.14.09 - 2:29 pm

OK! Will do!

Thanks SA - I appreciate it.

Gravatar I should have said, "The guitarist for whom?"

Gravatar UC/Kelly, I forgot to add to my Yoo post above that U.S. District Judge Jeffrey is a Bush appointee.

Gravatar [U.S. District Judge Jeffrey is a Bush appointee]

Funny how when you go to readers' comments for reports on this, you get people calling him an Obama liberal (though not necessarily in those words), even when said reports point out that he's a Bush appointee. You'd think many conservatives have poor reading skills.

Gravatar One of our more illustrious SF citizens died - here is a part of her obit - that you won't see in her official obit:

It was just a small notice the other day among the paid obituaries, that Yvonne Boreta, "accomplished painter, model and college graduate," had passed away in Las Vegas at the age of 64.

The obit didn't mention it, but she was better known in these parts as one of the hottest acts in North Beach when the strip scene there was in its heyday.

Back in the 1960s, the Iranian-born blond bombshell took it all off - or most of it, anyway - at the Off Broadway under the stage name Yvonne D'Angers. The reporters of the day, uniformly male, dubbed her "the Persian Lamb."

Along with Carol Doda at the nearby Condor Club, she helped launch the topless craze. "She and Carol Doda were like (Joe) DiMaggio and (Ted) Williams," recalled state Democratic Party Chairman John Burton, who was bartending those days just down the street at Bimbo's.

In 1965, D'Angers - wearing an electric-blue sequined dress - was the star witness in a trial over the legality of topless waitresses. And in 1966 she chained herself to the Golden Gate Bridge to protest her long-threatened deportation to Iran.

Just another slice of San Francisco's treasured past. "It sure as f- was," Burton said. "As good as it got."

Here is the California Historical Marker for the Condor Club.

Yeah, this is my neighborhood. I won't go into the details about the last death at the Condor Club. Even though the guy got crushed to death by the ceiling when the piano rose too far, he had a smile on his face. Not so for the stripper involved, who was rescued several hours later. Did I mention that our exotic dancers here are unionized and some are worker-owners of a peep-show venue?

Ah, San Francisco....she never disappoints.

Gravatar Jeebus, that cantankerous old coot John Burton is the Cali Dem Chairman? Man, I thought he'd be retired by now. I remember meeting him in college, when he was a State Representative., and I was involved with a state-wide lobbying organization for Cal State students. That dude Burton could cuss up a storm. He was very supportive of our efforts, to his credit, in trying to stop that asshole Dukemajian from gutting the Universities and dramatically raising student fees. Still have my "No Tuition" button from those days.

Gravatar Thank you, Kelly.

Gravatar The administrative planet Jupiter, noted for progress and determination, responsible decisions and even hubris, turned retrograde this morning. All bets are off until he returns direct on October 13, the anniversary of the suppression of the Knights Templar. This is the summer where it all goes off the tracks.

Gravatar It all goes off teh tracks right here:

WHY TAKE ACTION
Cirila Baltazar Cruz gave birth to her baby girl in November of 2008 at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, MS. She speaks very little Spanish and no English, as her native language is Chatino, an Indigenous language from Oaxaca, Mexico that is spoken by some 50,000 people.

The hospital provided her with an "interpreter" who is from Puerto Rico and does not speak Chatino, the language of the mother. Because of the language barrier and the misunderstanding by the hospital's interpreter who only spoke Spanish and English, a social worker was called in.

The hospital's social worker reported "evidence" of abuse and neglect based on the following:
* The "baby was born to an illegal [sic] immigrant;"
* The "mother had not purchased a crib, clothes, food or formula." (Most Latina mothers breast feed their babies).
* "She does not speak English which puts baby in danger."

Ms. Baltazar Cruz's baby was snatched from her after birth at the hospital and given to an affluent attorney couple from the posh Ocean Springs who cannot have children.

The authorities made no effort to locate an interpreter in her native tongue. MIRA located an interpreter who is fluent in Chatino in Los Angeles CA and has interviewed the mother extensively with the interpreters help.
The mother has been accused of being poor and not being able to provide for this child. No one has asked the mother to provide evidence of support. She owns a home in Mexico and a store which provides both secure shelter and financial support, not counting the nurturing of a loving family of two other siblings, a grandmother, aunts, uncles and other extended family. Meanwhile, there is word in the Gulf Coast community that the "parents to be," have already had a baby shower celebrating the "blessed arrival" of this STOLEN child!

PLEASE MAKE CALLS & WRITE LETTERS TO DEMAND THE SAFE RETURN OF BABY & REUNITE HER WITH MOTHER

If you believe this is unjust and outrageous and goes against all moral and religious beliefs and values, please call or write to the presiding Judge and the MS Department of Human Services to STOP this ILLEGAL ADOPTION! Stealing US born babies from immigrant parents is a growing epidemic in the United States. Many Latino Parents have lost their children this way!

Gravatar In Memoriam for my dog:

Frances Farmer K9, 1995-2009

Frances passed away from complications that involved advanced age, debilitating osteoarthritis and cancerous growths in her internal organs on Monday afternoon, June 15, 2009. She was euthanized at East Orlando Animal Hospital after having been sick for about a month. She had not been able to eat more than an occasional small morsel of food for more than two weeks. Private cremation followed.

Frances was a double adoption, first from a humane society shelter in Orlando and then from her first adopting family when they moved away. She came to live with me in late 1997 and has been a deeply loved and faithful companion animal these past 12 years. A rescued dog, she did not have pedigree papers but she was clearly a black and tan Australian Cattle Dog with a strong sense of energy, playfulness and loyalty.

The Buddhist Commemorative Service for Pets will follow at home on the 49th day, July 27, 2009.

“May every living being, drowning and adrift,

Gravatar Indigo, please accept my heartfelt condolences. I know how hard it is.

Frances will be waiting there for you at the Rainbow bridge.

Peace

Gravatar Woof.

Gravatar Sorry for your loss, Indigo.

After you're done mourning, you can look forward to rescuing another dog, should you wish to.

Gravatar Indigo, sorry for your loss. Those Aussies are a particular favorite of mine too.

Gravatar "Learned helplessness"? This is some damn sick stuff.

In April, Panetta fired all the C.I.A.’s contract interrogators, including the former military psychologists who appear to have designed the most brutal interrogation techniques: James Mitchell and Bruce Jessen. The two men, who ran a consulting company, Mitchell, Jessen & Associates, had recommended that interrogators apply to detainees theories of “learned helplessness” that were based on experiments with abused dogs. The firm’s principals reportedly billed the agency a thousand dollars a day for their services. “We saved some money in the deal, too!” Panetta said. (Remarkably, a month after Obama took office the C.I.A. had signed a fresh contract with the firm.)

According to ProPublica, the investigative reporting group, Mitchell and Jessen’s firm, which in 2007 had a hundred and twenty people on its staff, recently closed its offices, in Spokane, Washington. One employee was Deuce Martinez, a former C.I.A. interrogator in the black-site program; Joseph Matarazzo, a former president of the American Psychological Association, was on the company’s board.
...
Lawsuits against abusive contractors remain a possibility, and any one of them could expose a line of authorizations leading directly up the chain of command at the C.I.A., and into the Bush White House.

...

http://www.newyorker.com/ reporti...currentPage=all

That would be sweet, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Gravatar Oh yeah, and recall that at least of those two Spokane sickos has moved to Florida and bought a giant house, don't gotta wonder why, same reason OJ moved there.

Gravatar Indigo,

Sorry to hear about your companion Frances. Pets are wonderful and powerful spirits.

At times, they have even made me tolerant of religion.

Here is what took place on Saturday, here in the city of St. Francis, who was a lover of nature and animals:

http://sfchronicle.us/cgi-bin/ ob...ype=newsbayarea

My favorite Franciscan legend is this: When St. Francis was on his deathbed, he thanked his donkey for carrying and helping him throughout his life. His donkey wept.

My condolences to you, Indigo.

Gravatar Thanks for the condolences, folks. I'm very sad today.
Please remember to include a bag or a couple of cans of pet food in the Million Can March. People with pets are having a tough time feeding their families and their pets too.

Gravatar to Indigo:
Oh, I'm so sad about the loss of your trusted friend and companion. I'll be sure to put in a can or two of pet food in Francis' memory into the Million Can March.

Gravatar Saint Francis is my favorite Saint of all time. I've done a lot of reading about his life.

Gravatar Kelly Canfield of Denver, CO: So glad to know you

Indigo, I want to offer my sympathies and so appreciate your call to include pet food in our MCM food drive.

Peace to Unrulies everywhere...and especially the Unruly Ones in Iran.

Gravatar Does anyone know how to contact Keith Olberman? I've been all over the website. The only link I can find sends me to his blog that hasn't been updated in weeks. I did email Rachel who apparently isn't afraid to post her email addy.

Gravatar From this story about Sponge Bob Square Pants and teh gay:

KOlbermann@MSNBC.com

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6852828/

Gravatar Good news for Mitt and Sarah. . .

Republican Sen. John Ensign of Nevada, a leading conservative mentioned as a potential presidential candidate, admitted Tuesday he had an extramarital affair with a woman who was a member of his campaign staff. "Last year I had an affair. I violated the vows of my marriage," Ensign said at a brief news conference. "It is the worst thing I have ever done in my life. If there was ever anything in my life that I could take back, this would be it." http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/ar...38D18.DTL& tsp=1

As opposed to supporting illegal military invasions and torture, I suppose. . .

Gravatar John Ensign: "Mistakes were made. We sent those guys to their death in Iraq, and tortured those camel-jockeys because we thought we HAD to. Sorry.

Since my wife is blackmailing me, I have no further comment."

Gravatar Of course, Jim Gibbon, Nevada's governor had his sex scandal--didn't he choke a waitress in a garage in the process of it all?--and is still in office. And moving to the other political party, Gavin Newsom screwed his top aide's wife, and he's running for governor of California now.

Gravatar PBS is broadcasting a documentary about gays in the military and the impact that DADT has on them. I love the evocative play on words that they've used as the title. Or is that provocative?

ASK NOT

Gravatar Also on topic: After generating much bad feeling in the gay community for his lack of action on DADT and DOMA, Obama decides to throw y'all a bone (DON'T go there!)

The LA Times headline reads:

bama to offer benefits to gay partners of federal employees

Finally, friends with bennies has some real meaning.

Gravatar The Corps that control PBS let you Canucks see their programs, SBT? Mighty multi-cultural of them.

Gravatar Except that the benefits don't include health, and it's a memorandum rather than an executive order, which means it expires when Obama leaves office.

Gravatar I'd take that "bone" but it's not a real one, it's that synthetic rawhid crap the Chinese foist off on us as pet food.

Gravatar Finally, friends with bennies has some real meaning.

SadButTrue | Homepage | 06.17.09 - 1:36 am | #

Still no friend - and at this point, not even a crafty politician.

What happened is this: There is a big $1000 a person DNC fund-raising event coming up that is LGBT centric.

After the despicable defense of DOMA by the Obama administration and other actions that are nothing more than betrayal of the LGBT community, with tremendous community pressure (e-activism) people started to pull out of the event, and some of these are 'big names.'

As the White House only speaks the language of money, and we delivered a very effective message by getting people to pull out of the event, they flinched and said 'uncle' and said that Obama would sign this executive memo immediately. Problem is that even if it did have health benefits, it wasn't enough to placate us. And it doesn't have health benefits.

Howard Dean was on Rachel Maddow yesterday. He said the DOMA defense was a huge mistake and the only way for Obama to save face now is to move up the timetable (as if there is one) on the repeal of DADT. Did I mention that a few weeks back, the Obama administration ALSO defended DADT in a Supreme Court case? So he is wants to repeal DOMA and DADT, but yet he is defending DOMA and DADT.

Who did we elect as president, Sybil?

What Obama is attempting to do with the 'benefits' for federal employees is an insult.

But the good news is that we have found a way to apply pressure to Obama - we are no longer the ATM for the Democratic party. It is now pay for action, and if he doesn't deliver, he gets nothing from us.

Bad Obama, No Donut.

Good Obama, Maple Bar.

You choose, Mr. President.

Gravatar Morning Unrulies

Thanks Green Lib. You'd think I would have at least mastered the obvious by this time in my life.

Gravatar Given that John Ensign is a Veterinarian, do you think he was dating a dog?

Good Morning

Gravatar KOlbermann@MSNBC.com

green libertarian | 06.16.09 - 8:29 pm | #

Nope that was just returned. Also tried keith@msnbc.com since Rachel's is rachel@msnbc.com, but that didn't work either.

I guess we're just going to have to get really unruly for him to pay attention to us.

In the meantime, maybe the more the merrier could email Rachel and just maybe we'll get her attention.

Gravatar Methinks the honeymoon with Obama is over and done with. He's betrayed his campaign promise to the GLBT community, lost his credibility as the "anti war candidate", and played a cat and mouse game over torture, and has maintained the bush stance on White House secrecy and surveillance of citizens. Liberals on facebook seem to be very disenchanted with him right now.

Gravatar I've had better honeymoons!

Gravatar Come tomorrow, I'll have been on my honeymoon for 26 years

Gravatar Bummer about the bounceback on KO's addy, Rev. Not too surprising, I guess, as he would have to have staff sort through what would probably be 100s if not thousands of emails a day, half of which would be hate mail.

Congrats in advance on your anniversary.

Gravatar Thanks, Green Lib. We do have Rachel Maddow's addy. . . who also no doubt receives thousands. So maybe we need to do a blogswarm of emails to her and maybe we'll get noticed.

rachel@msnbc.com

Gravatar [Given that John Ensign is a Veterinarian, do you think he was dating a dog?]

If so, I would hope it wasn't a dog that was a patient--that would be unethical.

Gravatar Congratulations, RevPhat on 26 years of wedded bliss.

Gravatar tc, I guess phoenixwoman is trying to keep him honest. http://oxdown.firedoglake.com/diary/5816

Gravatar add 20 cans of pet food to the donations.

Gravatar Sorry for the tacky criticisms. I'm just still pissed off about John A. support for the shooting of prostesters, and the ENDA thing, and subtle racism underlying some of the posts on his blog, usually from himself.

Gravatar I just noticed that the photo of lady liberty in rainbow colors that UC posted. The way the lawn bisects the photo makes it look similar to a guillotine blade.

Coincidence? Prophecy?

Gravatar It DOES look like that Gary, doesn't it? Hmmmm.

Gravatar tireiron chef | 06.18.09 - 5:46 pm

JohnA wants to be a force of nature and he isn't. Sometimes it's comical to watch him fuss. I've given up taking him all that seriously, but he does keep the conversation lively, you've got to admit.

Gravatar Truth be told, I have been checking his site lately and EVEN LEFT COMMENTS! OOO!

But what the hell.

Gravatar New gravatar?

Gravatar OUI!

I'm getting ALL THE WAY OUT baby....

Gravatar Obama, Obama, Obama, walks like a politician, talks like a politician, sounds like a politician & like I thought all along is NOTHING but another politician.

What will the sheople do this time as the enter the 'BIG tent' and leave with no fleece??

I'd say the shit soon be hitting the fan here as is it in just about every other corner of the world.

Planning on peddling the pitch forks and the torches this summer myself!!

Hello all, hope you all are having a good summer!!

Gravatar Checking...

Gravatar Okey Dokey! Snagged a new Blogger and Youtube account such that I think I can make a total "break out" quite soon.

And I have good news on the Million Can March; my company has agreed to participate via Lincoln Foodbank's "Campaign Against Hunger" during July!

Last year, the Lincoln Foodbank did 64 million pounds of food and over $74,000 dollars in the campaign period of the last 2 weeks in July.

Thinking we can actually do something....at least in one regard.

Cheers!

Gravatar Good on ya, Kelly.

I rode on the bus today a short spell with a kid who got on right where the gay youth teen center is. So I asked him if he was coming from there, he was. We had a good, if brief conversation about the center, this past Pride Week and such. I told him there were those of us in the straight community trying to help out, and support the center.

Of course I have no first hand knowledge of what's like at that age, adolescent, gay, trying to be out, in a (mostly) gay-hostile world...

Gravatar So I haven't done the food bank thing yet, but I did bring some fresh-from-the-oven Chinese pastries at 7:30am to the Iranians holding a round-the-clock vigil in Union Square. Does that count? Do I get a per-pastry credit (there were 20).

What is the pastry to can-equivalent to ratio? I get stuck on the 'gay years' calculations and don't have the capacity to take on any more formulas.

But I did manage to best my previous hyphen tally: 7 of them!

Gravatar You know what Gary? Put it in pounds, and I think that we can do the whole thing in pounds because cans come in ounces, and there's the whole convertability in that.

But now I want one of those pastries.

Gravatar I gave 10# of pancake mix and a 64 oz jug of pure organic maple syrup.

Does that count as two?

We should contact some of the regulars on Keith O's show. Might be easier to get to him that way. IMHO

Hi Kelly

I can't necessarily vouch for the source, linky, etc, as I don't do, as yet, Facebook, but this came from a very trusted friend, long time progressive activist, Dem Party candidate for Congress, and environmentalist extraordinaire. Still, he's 80 some years old, and has his "moments", often on the side of where the far right meets the far left.

Don't we all? Only a matter of frequency.

Gravatar Kelly that is awesome about the food drive.

Gary, I'll count the pastries as 20 ... only because I don't do advance math. Which means if we switch over to lbs. I'm probably doomed. I figure if folks give me # of cans, I'll count. If I get # of lbs., I'll just do a separate count for that.

We'll let the unrulies decide if this was a success!

So far the new total number of items = 117
