Gravatar Just a quick "hello" from wet, cold, rainy Seattle. Coldest spring EVER.

I do so hope when the dogs of war get hung that Nancy Pelosi, the most cherished asset of the Bush Administration, gets hers. She is SO DESERVING!

Gravatar Fire at will, Gulag.

Never happen, Gregory. If the criminals get off, the enablers will too.

"Back in the day" people got hung for this.

Dave of the Jungle | Homepage | 06.03.08 - 8:24 pm | #

Saw that Dave. It's a given. Now the spotlight's on him. He wanted it, he's got it.....what's Obama gonna do?

Pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan?
Cut aid to Israel?
Nationalize oil?
Impose a price freeze?
even a windfall profits tax maybe?

I wanna know what he's going to do to restore this nation. Root out corruption? Prosecute war criminals? Close Guantanimo? Close secret prisons abroad and on ships? Make the US accountable? Ban Torture?
Restore Habeas Corpus???? Patriot Acts? Military Commissions Act??

What I DON'T want to hear about is immigration, healthcare and gay marriage. They're non-issues.
We've got e shopping list of things that NEED to be addressed starting with illegal wars of aggression and war profiteering. And it's just the tip of the iceberg.
I'll wait for his answers on the real issues before celebrating his candidacy or anyone's for that matter.
Just me.

Washington , D.C. , June 1, 2008 : “My colleague here showed me an overview, official study concerning U.S. detainees. It is not generally knows to the public but the U.S government now has over 30,000 (31,082 as of May 19, 200 people in secret custody, all over the world.

An official U.S. program of torture and ‘rendition’ has been going on since before 9/11 and has never stopped. A number, estimated to be approximately 3,500, have been killed during these interrogations or have died as the result of them.

At the present time, the government, acting under specific Presidential orders, has a virtual fleet of prison ships scattered all across the globe and masked by a curtain of strict secrecy.

The U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S Department of State and the Central Intelligence Agency are all heavily involved in this program.

A total of 22 U.S. Navy ships ( including ten ships leased by the U.S. Navy) house prisoners who are kept chained up in the vessels very much like the conditions of the black slavers in the days when slavery was legal in the United States ........

Hi Indigo

Gravatar Good morning unrulies.

Recommended listening. KPFA's "Guns & Butter" from May 28th. 3 from Project Censored including Mike Whitney about Operation Falcon.

He mentioned right off that 70% of our entire intelligence budget is now in the hands of private companies - and so not subject to any oversight.

Gravatar [and so not subject to any oversight.]

Which enables them to obtain "intelligence" any way they see fit; and they can probably use it anyway they see fit as well-- does anyone else see a blackmail / hostage situation coming down the pike eventually? And of course, without oversight, they can also just make shit up-- who's going to check their work?

Gravatar Wow, lots of news! Auto makers packing it in. Airlines packing it in.

I think the US is collapsing. No industry, no manufacturing, no auto, a little airline (for those who can afford it). What's left?
No one wants anything to do with us any more. Oh well, it'll make a great prison.

It's OUR fault.

Amerikagulag | 06.04.08 - 10:05 am | #

When those storage units first began being built in so cal, some 30 years ago, I referred to them as "Apartments of the Future".

As I have been saying over and over, globalism is NOT sustainable. Only local and regional communities, with minimum trade for goods that are located more than say, 500 miles away, will be sustainable. Lifestyles will be much different.

As to the waste that Aunty mentioned in the US, yes, it's endemic and epidemic, however, eliminating that waste thru efficiency is far easier to do than developing alternative sources of energy, which also must be done, but for example, you don't put up 20 solar panels in order to provide electricity to power your inefficient electric space heating and a dwelling which is not sufficiently insulated such that, that heat energy literally goes right out the window.

Opponents of Evolution Adopting a New Strategy

Instead of pushing for “intelligent design” curriculum, they are seeking to require that the “strengths and weaknesses” of evolution be taught in public schools. While the phrase sounds benign, critics say it is an effort to “undermine the teaching of evolution” and to push “religious objections under the heading of scientific discourse.”

These people have too much time on their hands.

Gravatar Here's something we'll never see.

'They Can go 40 miles for a Dollar,' if Cars Get Made
AFS Trinity's prototype sport utility vehicles can go 40 miles on a single charge from a standard electric outlet, at which point a gas-powered engine takes over. The SUVs reach top speeds of 90 mph on the highway -- and accelerate without a hitch, as Furia demonstrated while speeding Monday on Westlake Avenue North.
One problem, though: No automaker has agreed yet to license AFS Trinity's technology, so it isn't commercially available.

Solution - SCREW the automakers!

Gravatar Bush has plans to turn Iraq over to the corporations and their mercenary armies
http://www.uruknet.info/?p=m4458...&hd=&size=1& l=e

One contract could essentially begin to privatize the process of training the Iraqi security forces by hiring "mentors" to do what the U.S. military has struggled unsuccessfully to do for the past five years.

On the civilian side, the Bush administration is looking for a team of contractors to establish a system of security and protection for the Iraq judicial system:

With a circular logic, the contractors for the court police will be primarily charged with setting up a system that can be run by contractors for the long term:

In short, State wants a contractor to put together all the elements so the department can contract the project to another contractor.

Finally, the U.S. is seeking to privatize its own Iraqi prisons.

Gravatar In The Guardian

The Brits are going to investihgate whether the CIA has held 'Al Qaida terrorism suspects' (I put that in quotes because the usually turn out to be innocent brown-skinned people turned in for a bounty) in a jail on Diego Garcia, a British territorial possession in the Indian Ocean.

" The all-party foreign affairs committee is to examine long-standing suspicions that the agency has operated one of its so-called "black site" prisons on Diego Garcia, the British overseas territory in the Indian Ocean that is home to a large US military base.

Lawyers from Reprieve, a legal charity that represents a number of detainees at Guantánamo Bay, including several former British residents, are calling on the committee to question US and British officials about the allegations. According to the organisation's submission to the committee, the UK government is "potentially systematically complicit in the most serious crimes against humanity of disappearance, torture and prolonged incommunicado detention".

Clive Stafford Smith, the charity's legal director, said he was "absolutely and categorically certain" that prisoners have been held on the island.
"

There is another possibility- that the prisoners are being held on ships off the coast of Diego Garcia. This would remove responsibility from the UK, but not the US.

Gravatar " Bush has plans to turn Iraq over to the corporations and their mercenary armies "

[-Amerikagulag | 06.04.08 - 11:48 am-]

That story was also in TPMMuckraker yesterday. The whole point of the effort seems to be to get fascism completely out of the control of government. Considering that the Military Industrial Complex seems to have done a better job of equipping and training Blackwater thugs than they have the actual military, this is pretty worrisome.

if we can have food coops, bakery coops, bank coops [i.e. credit unions], why not cooperative car factories? Get someone who can pull in some bucks.... say.... MoveOn.org? Wouldn't that be WAY cool to have a leftist consumer run car company? Cars... MoveOn.... what a good fit. Bet they could raise the money to take over one of these closing plants in no time. Hire back the laid off workers and figure out how to make some solar electric cars at a reasonable price, profit sharing with their employees.

Gravatar And vice versa.

" Bush has plans to turn Iraq over to the corporations and their mercenary armies "

Corporations plan to turn over the White House to them and their mercenary armies.

Mission Accomplished.

Over 40% of our "defense" spending goes to contractors. Over 70% of our "intelligence" spending goes to contractors. Neither is under control of Congress. They hold the purse strings over ??? .... not much of anything anymore. And WE THE PEOPLE keep filling the purse. Taxation without representation.
