Isn't Glenn Beck's program dead last? Even that fucker Tucker has ratings a tad higher.
I did see something on MSNBC from Martin Savage just now who spoke about FEMA's response and volunteers working in SoCal. There is no comparison, he said, in one word - infrastructure.

I was thinking similar thoughts, Pansy Bastard the other day. I had to rent a car for a work trip, and tried to leave downtown DC at peak rush hour (my bad). Anyway, traffic was snarled 1000 X worse than normal because the BIG DICK was parading about town in his motorcade, then, closer to the White House, they had all the cross streets closed down because President Shitface decided to go for a joyride during rush hour, and then, to top that off, one of the First Sluts and her 2-SUV entourage interrupted the trickle of traffic.
I went off the deep end. A very long string of loud, nasty epithets poured forth from my mouth as I sat wedged into a lane that was not really a lane, and then I heard a voice:
"Power to the Little People, Lady".
I had forgotten that I had the windows rolled down. I was stuck next to a bus, and the driver heard it all. We had a roaring good belly laugh together. It relieved a little tension.

Agent,
Time for people to stop that crap.
My sister is a high school teacher. When she hears the word "fag" spoken in class--no matter what she is doing--she stops everything. She brings the whole class together, reviews statistics on homosexuality and hate crimes. Brings out pictures of Matthew Shepherd. Quotes his mom. Tells the kids that their words have great power and that there is no way in the world she will tolerate them contributing to hate speech that is associated with murders like the one that killed Matthew Shepherd.
She does it in each class she teaches.
Once.
She deals it direct, and the kids totally get it.

I admire that about her very much, Ellie. We talk all the time about how we work our values into our day to day lives the most effective way possible. In fact, we just talked about this again because she asked me for sources to update her statistics.

We've got some hate crime going on in my neighborhood recently. My next door neighbors (2 gay guys) have been assaulted three times in a single month by the same group of 3 "kids". They aren't robbing them--- don't ever demand money-- they just jump out of the bushes, or rush towards them, and beat them up. It's amazing because my neighbors are practicing Bhuddists, and refuse to physically fight back, but they are organizing the neighborhood to take it to the Commissioners and the police chief.

Dave,
I know. Sometimes I get SO FREAKIN ENRAGED at the faux faith fundies, and I try to be specific about that. I have some family "of the cloth" that have spoken out, protested, and been arrested marching for civil rights, nuclear disarmament, women's rights, and I am pleased to say, gay rights. At the same time, the southern baptist missionaries spout a line to choke on. It's a twisting turning family tree...
Family is good. Sister is fine, the school she teaches at hasn't burned, my mom's house is safe, the revoked the evacuation notice there, and with the wind down, I feel like things are much more manageable. I know what the Santa Ana conditions do to wildfires here, and with so many fires burning at once, I was pretty freaked out.
And the air here is better today...

Human creativity focused on problem solving can explode the mythology of resignation and despair. It is this point of view that inspires the annual Bioneers conference that takes place each fall in the San Francisco Bay area, which now streams via satellite to 19 sites across the country. The conference (10/19-21 in San Rafael, Calif.) is a gathering of scientific and social innovators who are developing and implementing visionary and practical models for restoring community, justice and democracy, as well as the Earth itself.

I can't say I'm a particular fan of public profanity. There is a time and place for everything.
Like that one time I was serving as eucharistic minister and some little ole' guy, I placed the host in his hand and which then fell promptly onto the floor (carpet), to which he said - quite loudly I might add for a Sunday morning - "Goddamnit that's what you get; I didn't want it in my hand." To which I responded, "Then open your goddamned mouth." People were snickering left and right. Fr. Bob - thank g*d it was him! said after Mass, he could hardly keep himself composed AND he absolutely could not look at me.
It was one of things that's out your mouth before the brain has engaged, that gut response.

Christianity should not be criticized with a broad brush, but there are some who deserve to be condemned in the strongest possible terms - precisely because their so-called "Christian values" are anything but.
Right. Got that. Just be sure to name names, and avoid the broad brush of "Christian," okay? I depend on you guys for that kind of thinking person-type moderation.

Nor do I trust Hillary although I'd vote for her before I'd vote for Obama.

I've never trusted Obama. Too slick, too GQ, speeches too carefully crafted and delivered. And I really resent him presenting himself as an "anti-war" candidate, and spouting off that he was against the invasion of Iraq. He made a single anti-war speech (that was pretty weak, imo), but has NEVER attended an anti-war rally, and in fact, he has had NUMEROUS war protesters removed and arrested from his office in Chicago (on multiple occasions), and his voting record does not appear to be very "anti war".
I'm not generally a single issue voter, but this time around, it's all about the war, who supported it, who didn't.

I know Gregory likes Ron Paul, but I think that man is dangerous!
Ron Paul is NOT just the good anti war man you may think he is, this person has some seriously disturbed views on all kinds of issues. Let us discuss...
===================================
Paul supports elimination of most federal government agencies: such as the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Education, the Department of Energy, the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Administration, and the Interstate Commerce Commission, calling them unnecessary bureaucracies.
Paul opposes the draft, socialized health care, the welfare state (?), foreign aid and judicial activism.
Paul calls himself "an unshakable foe of abortion" and believes regulation of medical decisions about maternal or fetal health is "best handled at the state level.
===================================
OK, that's just a tiny bit about this man Ron Paul. So perhaps we need to remember ALL there is to a candidate...

The Government Accountability Office, Congress's nonpartisan auditor, issued stark warnings earlier this year on shortcomings in the administration's plans to fight fires.
2007-10-24-fire.jpgIn a June report, the GAO report faulted the U.S. Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, and other agencies for failing to accomplish the "fundamental step" of planning out what assets and resources were needed to prepare for approaching fire seasons.

Condi Rice made a rather mealy-mouthed statement about the Maher Arar case today, the first acknowledgement by the US government that there was anything untoward about taking an innocent man, locking him in a coffin-sized cell for a year, and beating him daily.
' "Our communication with the Canadian government on this [case] was by no means perfect; it was in fact quite imperfect," U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in Washington.
"We have told the Canadian government we do not think this was handled particularly well … and we will try to do better in the future," Rice said while testifying before the House of Representatives foreign affairs committee. '
'By no means perfect' - WTF!?! The understatement of the century.
BTW, Arar is still being treated like a terrorist by the US government, despite having been cleared by an exhaustive multimillion dollar Canadian government inquiry. He's remains on a no-fly list, is not allowed to enter the US, and has been denied standing to sue the administration over his treatment.
Just another example of the Bu$hCo™ definition of justice.

It is too early to place blame for the response to the fire.
Fires can be difficult to manage regardless of the number of firefighters and/or equipment available.
Emergency response is difficult to plan for. Actually it has been said the the 'plans' are worthless, but the planning process to create a plan is valuable.

I have loved musicals since I was a wee lass. My father hated music (tells you alot about him now doesn't it?) but his mother had a stereo and LOTS of albums, most of which were musicals. I used to beg to go to her house just to listen to them over and over again.
Heck, I used to watch those Fred Astaire musicals on MILLION DOLLAR MOVIE constantly until I had all of the lines memorized. AT least I did that in Summer when it was HOT. They still give me goosebumps...

I need help troubleshooting the site. It looks like Photobucket is acting up. I can't see the guillotine logo at the top of this page for instance, or the custom Photoshopped lighthouse with the inverted American flag on the parapet. When I try to log on to my account, I am told "You don't have permission to access /albums/n44/gui110tine/ on this server."
So I need to know:
1) do YOU see the images I'm talking about?
2) do any of you have a Photobucket account, and if so, can you successfully log in?
Thanks.

GarySF,
I loved the Crawling Eye, but my favorites were musicals OR those wonderful dramas and comedy's of the 30's/40's.
The wardrobes were wonderful...and the Black and White pix just added so much to the aura.

My Fair Lady was a great film, I videotaped it the last time it was on TV. Great songs, acting, ♥AUDREY HEPBURN♥!!!
-Best song: On the street where you live.
Best scene: when Elisa is taken to the horse races, talking about her father pouring gin down her mother's throat. "It was like mother's milk to her." HILarious!

What does the white ho say?
President Bush comes out; we’ll be polite. But frankly, that’s not the solution. How about sending our National Guard back from Iraq? So that we have those people here to help us?
That answer obviously didn’t sit well with Norah O’Donnell, who interviewed Garamendi today for an update on the fires:
Well, Governor (sic), I’ve heard you express concern because of the stress the National Guard, not only in California but across the country, have suffered of the involvement in Iraq. But we heard from Lt. Gen. Steven Blum who said today that there’s still 17,000 National Guardsmen in California; only 3,000 of the are in Iraq. So you’re not criticizing the National Guard, are you?

The logo I'm referring to is normally at the top of haloscan, above the words Murmur, Instigate, Clamor. I'd show you what it looks like but thumbsnap is down for me now too. Which brings up another question - can anyone else see thumbsnap images right now?
It could be that the hardware for both services is in SoCal, and affected by the fires. Speaking of which, any news from Jump? I think Erin is also in that area, yes?
It's definitely not a cache issue, I'm using Firefox and it doesn't seem to have whatever vulnerability IE has in that regard. I'm guessing DNS lookup, or a crashed drive at photobucket.
I'm not getting the yellow refresh bar from haloscan either, but that's always been a 'come and go' feature for me.

This whole fire thing, and the allegations of arson in the Santiago fire bring Naomi Klein's book about the disaster industry to mind. After all the clusterfuck in Iraq was to enrich Big Oil, Halliburton, Blackwater, and other Bush-friendly corporations. Why not start a giant fire and then offer some more no-bid, cost-plus contracts to your friends? These guys don't care who dies, if it means money in their pockets.
I'm becoming a little cynical about the whole thing.

OK, thanks Word. I just noticed another lacuna, the 'button' image for My Thinking Spot, which is on another Photobucket account. So that means that it is definitely ALL of Photobucket, not just my account. The fact that no-one else is seeing the images is what I was really going for. If it was just me, it could have been either my browser, or even a problem from my ISP.
There was a time that my ISP's DNS server was misconfigured, and I would intermittently be denied access to large portions of the web. I had a heck of a time convincing the pinheads at the help desk (in India, of course - most of them could barely speak English) that it wasn't a problem with my machine.

If you've got the time read Deepak Chopra's post at HuffPo, about America's ruling class.
"When a governing class develops in a democratic society, it loses contact with the people who elect it. In many ways America is burdened with such a class, which has amassed power over the past fifty years, until it arrived at a place where its right to rule goes almost unchallenged.
[...]
An unexpected benefit of the Bush years is that the ruling class may have gone too far. A culture of corruption binds Congress and lobbyists to an unheard of degree. Bill after bill, earmark after earmark, has blatantly served special interests. Both parties are guilty of kowtowing to money and the corporations that dispense it with shameless abandon -- the buying and selling of political favors has never been so outrageous. Influence peddling, once a crime, has become the norm."

Gary,
Well, I talked to my mom today. The winds have died down and that has helped. Sounds like the big fires are no longer threatening densely populated areas, but there are still some spots that are in danger. She said the hotel in the Harris fires is still surrounded by fire and still at risk. There was some concern about the different fires merging--total inferno. That would be bad.
The fires started Sunday and Bush is taking credit for sending help Wednesday? Sorry, but.... what an asshole.
Air is still super crappy here. The air was yellow-orange all day today. Super eerie.

Fake Al Qaeda
http://
www.whatreallyhappened.co...akealqaeda.html
I am relinking this because in what has to be one of the lamest attempts to exploit a natural disaster in history, the Bush administration is sending up trial balloons trying to claim that the wildfires running out of control in Southern California are a terror plot by Al Qaeda!
Folks, the fires are out of control because just as was the case in Louisiana, Bush slashed funding for needed infrastructure in order to spend on his wars. In Louisiana it was neglecting the levees. In Southern California it was neglecting to clear dead brush from high risk areas, plus the funding for needed water drop aircraft was cut. and in both states, most of the National Guard and their heavy equipment are in Iraq.
So now Bush, in order to save his sorry ass from the consequences of having AGAIN gambled with a major American city AND LOST, is trying to pin the blame on "The Toilet."

To which I responded, "Then open your goddamned mouth." People were snickering left and right. Fr. How about the Colin Powell slideshow with drawings of semi trucks in the desert, somehow identified as 'mobile chemical weapons laboratories'? Give me a frickin' break!
Look at the google map image of the Hoover Dam - it's a popular location, and you can zoom in to google's highest resolution. You can easily identify individual vehicles, and one imagines that the milspec KEYHOLE spy satellites allow you to nearly read the license numbers if at the proper angle.
But can you tell what's inside any of the trucks? NO, of course not. From an overhead shot, you are hard pressed to differentiate an ice cream truck from a hearse. And yet PROMINENT, RESPECTED 'JOURNALISTS' spew these stories over the airwaves like they had some credibility.

Condoleezza Rice appeared agitated but generally unfazed when an anti-war protester waved blood-red hands in her face, accusing the secretary of state of being a "war criminal."
"Blood of millions of Iraqis is on your hands," the protester told Rice, who was President Bush's national security adviser when he decided to invade Iraq.
"War criminal! ... War Criminal!" the black-clad, "blood"-soaked protester screamed as authorities dragged her from a hearing room on Capitol Hill. "Take her to the Hague."

After 9/11, the American people simply believed anything they were told without question. I'm getting the sense lately that that is finally beginning to change. Good, but is it too late?
"Neither a man nor a crowd nor a nation can be trusted to act humanely or to think sanely under the influence of a great fear"
-- Bertrand Russell
"Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom.
-- Bertrand Russell
I don't know that the American people have conquered their fear, but clearly many of them now fear Bush's excesses far more than any external terrorist threat. In essence they recognize that Bush is indeed the world's chief terrorist.

Why is California burning? In a private email, Australian investigative reporter Gavin Gatenby offered an important perspective, which he has allowed me to share. Gavin speaks as "a former National Parks and Wildlife Service firefighter who was a spokesman for the NPWS during the big bushfire crisis of 1994 and during subsequent fire seasons."
We cannot pay for a proper number of firefighters because our taxpayer dollars are going to Iraq. Our homes have been sacrificed and our wallets robbed to pay for a misadventure perpetrated by a president whom most Californians despise.
In fact, nearly 38 million people live in California. The butcher's bill for Iraq comes to $8000 for every man, woman and child in America. (That's a national average; in real life, Californians pay a far larger amount.) Do the math: If each Californian annually devoted one-tenth of that figure to fighting fires and other natural disasters, we would have $30 billion more to spend on our needs.

SBT,
Research has shown that for every dollar invested by the US government in natural hazard mitigation programs--a la FEMA--a savings of $2.5 is realized.
I don't know if the link is online, but I have the hard copy.
It's really true.
Oh, and that's the most conservative estimate. They actually believe the return is higher.

Rice says Iran an obstacle to U.S. goals
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071...go_co/
us_iraq_6
Since the United States is not IN the Middle East, I can understand why those people who ARE in the Middle East are not too eager to have the US decide their future, considering how Iraq turned out.
Rice's statement is a huge slip-up. It telegraphs not only a huge arrogance of purpose by the US, but effectively admits that Iran will be invaded for reasons unconnected to the claims that they are interested in nuclear weapons.

Yes, and there are many other areas where the government's money can be well spent (as we know in liberal Canada.)
Spending a few thou on a child's education and training could increase his lifetime income by tens or even hundreds of times that amount.
Spending money on things like healthcare and a social safety net reduces the feeling of desperation that leads to crime. Our crime rates BTW, as with most of the world's, are a fraction of those in the US. With 5% of the world's people, the US has 25% of the world's prisoners. How is that defined as freedom?
And of course, infrastructure is always a wise investment.

Smile, you know I'm a Canadian, right? We are not only geographically, but politically and culturally the closest country to the US there is. In fact I doubt there are two countries with such close in the world (except maybe Australia and New Zealand.) Still, the phrase 'arrogance of purpose' really rings an alarm in my mind. It sounds like an extension of historical American arrogance embodied in things like Manifest Destiny and the Monroe Doctrine.
I recently watched a segment of Bill Maher that had Janeanne Garofolo on it. She declared that she was indeed a citizen of the US, but considered herself ethically to be first and foremost a citizen of the world. That is almost the default position for Canadians. I was watching this by myself at home, but I nearly stood up and applauded Garofolo on the spot.
And just to be clear: most of us, myself included, love America. Or at least we love the concept of America. I particularly like your Constitution, and adore the sentiment behind the Declaration of Independence. Unfortunately, like with some elements of Christianity, the concept is sometimes diametrically opposed to the reality.
One more quote and I'm off to bed.
In theory, theory and practice are very alike. In practice they can be quite different.

Fox Noise never misses a chance to frighten as it entertains.
According to Steve Doocy, a morning anchor on Fox and Friends, the network learned "police officers in a hovering helicopter saw a guy starting one of these fires."
An "ominous" FBI memo from early this past summer has "popped up," and "an Al Qaeda detaineee" has said that the next wave of terrorism could be a series of wildfires.

Yeah, Chris I just saw a trailer on CNN that says Glenn Beck is covering that 'aspect of the story.' These guys are totally shameless propagandists. Joseph Goebbels would be proud to see his playbook being put to use so assiduously.
I declare shenanigans.

SadButTrue,
I blog about Fox Noise every now and again. They're amazing and like you say, shameless.
Recently, they had this extended segment on people who saw Pope John Paul in a flame. A few months ago, the were chirping about a "Mary raisin." Yep, the faithful reported seeing the Blessed Virgin in a raisin.
Soon they will be reporting new evidence that the world is indeed, flat.

Since I surely know someone who knows someone who knows someone who has probably been in telephone or email contact with someone in Pakistan, who knows someone who knows someone who knows someone who has something to do with Al Qaeda, I might have ties to Al Qaeda, and I think part of the terrorist plan to destroy America is to say stupid and inflammatory things on your CNN show.
So let's arrest the guy already.

Hell, you're probably next after him!
And now me, for responding to you, mentioning him.
Greetings, NSA, FBI, CIA, Chimpy, Darth Cheney - let me send a warm greeting your way. FUCK YOU. I meant that with all Christian love and kindness, of course.
