A great post at AlterNet about some paleontologists who went to the Creationism Museum in Akron, Ohio.
Adam and Eve Did What? A Visit to the Creationism Museum Makes Scientists Laugh, Cry
The museum argues, among other things, that war, famine and natural disasters are to blame on belief in evolution.
" "It's sort of a monument to scientific illiteracy, isn't it?" said Jerry Lipps, professor of geology, paleontology and evolution at University of California, Berkeley.
"Like Sunday school with statues... this is a special brand of religion here. I don't think even most mainstream Christians would believe in this interpretation of Earth's history."
The 27 million dollar, 70,000-square-foot (6,500-square-metre) museum which has been dubbed a "creationist Disneyland" has attracted 715,000 visitors since it opened in mid-2007 with a vow to "bring the pages of the Bible to life."
[...]
Lisa Park of the University of Akron cried at one point as she walked a hallway full of flashing images of war, famine and natural disasters which the museum blames on belief in evolution.
"I think it's very bad science and even worse theology -- and the theology is far more offensive to me," said Park, a professor of paleontology who is an elder in the Presbyterian Church. I think there's a lot of focus on fear, and I don't think that's a very Christian message... I find it a malicious manipulation of the public."
[...]
Daryl Domning, professor of anatomy at Howard University, held his chin and shook his head at several points during the tour.
"This bothers me as a scientist and as a Christian, because it's just as much a distortion and misrepresentation of Christianity as it is of science," he said.
"It's not your old-time religion by any means." "
RevPhat did a post a couple of years ago about a similar museum in Kentucky Kentucky Fried Creationism, and I assume that there are several more scattered around the US. If they're costing in the range of $27 million a pop, don't you think that the fundy churches could be putting those dollars to better, more Christian uses? Like maybe feeding some poor people, or building some low-rent housing or even free shelters for the homeless?
Just saying.

For the first time ever, I agree with Peter King on MJ. We sure as hell complain about Catholic priests who molest children, but if you are a successful singer, you get a pass.
Nope, I was wrong. "A pass" doesn't begin to capture it:
"Because Michael Jackson was an icon to us," said one neighbor. "To Stockton, Michael Jackson meant more to us than Jesus, to some people. I think they're both about even."

Torchwood: Children of Earth, Episode One just became available on bit Torrent - a mere 18 minutes after it finished being broadcast on BBC 3.
If you're not already a fan of this brilliant adult-oriented Doctor Who spin-off, I urge you to check it out. There's a very good tracker that specializes in British-produced TV, film and music at http://thebox.bz/ it requires you become a member, and it's a bit of a pain building up an early upload/download ratio, but it's definitely worth it. They just do things that can only be described as daring compared to the stuff you see on commercial-driven North American productions.
If you're a gay man I think you will absolutely love John Barrowman's portrayal of the flamboyantly bisexual Captain Jack Harkness. Even I think he's a hunk.
This would also be a great time for anyone to join The Box, because the Children of Earth episodes will all be 'free leeches' - which means the download won't count on your ratio, but any seeding you do to upload to others will. And this will be a very popular series worldwide. I joined the swarm with 92 seeds available, by the time I'd finished downloading the episode there were nearly 1,400.
Do it. You'll thank me, profusely.

I so totally agree. Being a musician I've met quite a few people who were quite brilliant, even virtuoso - but if you got to know them they were lower than the bottom of a snake pit. It turns out being a nice person is not a requirement to be blessed with talent in any sphere. It's bizarre that some people either don't know that or won't accept the obvious.

The thing is that there's no reason to agree with King just because his views might align with yours. It's easy to find something that anyone says that we can agree with--Limbaugh probably actually has a statement or two condeming lynching, even as his words and actions in fact encourage lynching. There are so many sex predators out there to condemn to begin with, and King's singling out of MJ in light of his presumed forgiveness for his fellow Party perverts is just an attempt to score points for himself.

I like John Barrowman. Unfortunately, he's already got a partner. Today, however, I've got to go to Homo Depot and return a set of under-cupboard lights that are the wrong kind and get the right kind. I don't know the details, the handyman told me to. He's no John Barrowman, however. In fact, I suspect him of str8tness. Maybe it's the girl-friend or the ex-wife or the kid. But perhaps I stereotype him. My bad! Then I need to find some daikon radishes, I'm about to attempt to make Takuan pickles. It's a busy day in a busy week. Poor John Barrowman, I'm too busy to stalk him. Yeah, there's that. I wasn't equating them, though--at least not the acts. One person I forgot to mention was Jim Gibbon, who beat up his mistress in a garage. Is he worse than a child molester? One would viscerally believe that battery is not as bad a pedophilia, but somehow it seems like we're falling into a particular sort of trap if we accept that equation.

I'm working two methods, one with dried shredded daikon and the other like you said. Drying things in the sun is no problem in Florida. If I get it right, it should come out as a sponge-like chunk of pickle used to clean the food bowls after eating oryoki style (Zen ceremonial meal). No hurry. But first . . . to sun-dry the root. Quitters never prosper.
Look at the 2009 toll so far. One 2012 Republican wannabe, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, announced he would not seek re-election next year. One of the top woulda-beens, Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, quit his job to join the Obama administration and left the country and the hemisphere.*
Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter quit the party. Last month, Nevada Sen. John Ensign had to resign his Republican leadership post to spend more time with his sex scandal. South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford resigned as head of the Republican Governors Association. After this week's disastrous AP interview, Sanford soon may have to step down as governor as well. As his Argentine mistress said, you can't "put the genius back in the bottle."
When did the GOP become such a bunch of quitters? What ever happened to the party of Larry Craig and his you'll-never-take-me-from-this-stall-alive spirit?
Some Republican strategists insist that resignation has its virtues. Mary Matalin told the New York Times that Palin's "brilliant" move will free her to camp out alongside Mitt Romney on the campaign trail. Certainly, we can all relish the next two years of watching the Romney and Palin broods go five-on-five across the heartland. But Romney himself is proof that quitting is no way to win. In 2006, he passed up a second term so he could campaign full-time in Iowa and New Hampshire. He lost them both.

This is for all of Michael Jackson's victims. And for all of the spiritual leaders/impostors who are quick to soothe the 'hurt' that this very rich and capitalistic family are supposedly experiencing all the while ignoring the abused children, if you represent God, then he has a very sick sense of humor. Imagine how Michael's victims must feel with all this adoration. The Jackson estate should minimally pay for therapy for life for these people.

Now that they have 60, Reid and Durbin need to remind Dem members that when your Leader files cloture, you support him. If you want political cover, vote against final passage. Fine. But opposing cloture means you're supporting a filibuster of your party's agenda.
From what I hear, they started delivering that message, if a softer version of it, earlier today.

A San Francisco teenager has been diagnosed with a strain of swine flu that is resistant to the common antiviral drug Tamiflu - an important milestone in the pandemic's evolution.
The case suggests swine flu - a form of influenza Type A, subtype H1N1 - is not only capable of developing drug resistance, but is capable of spreading between humans in that resistant form, said Dr. Arthur Reingold, professor at UC Berkeley School of Public Health. --SFGate

Alaska has a Department of Law. And it's embroiled in a succession battle.
Palin's naming of new No. 2 raises questions
Skipping third in line under legal review
By Pat Forgey | JUNEAU EMPIRE
Alaska Legislators are questioning whether Gov. Sarah Palin can appoint the state's No. 2 elected official without their input.
When Palin's resignation takes effect, Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will automatically become the state's chief executive and vacate the office of lieutenant governor.
In her resignation announcement Friday, Palin said Commissioner Craig Campbell of the Department of Military and Veteran's Affairs would "assume his role as lieutenant governor."
It's not clear how that would happen, as the Alaska Legislature has already designated Commissioner of Corrections Joe Schmidt as next in the line of succession to be lieutenant governor. Deviating from the line of succession will take legislative approval, top legislative leaders say.
"I certainly think she can put Campbell into that position, it's a little bit more unclear whether he can take office without being confirmed by the Legislature," said House Speaker Mike Chenault, R-Nikiski.
"I think the Legislature should confirm, at a minimum, and the question is when," said Rep. Beth Kerttula, D-Juneau, House minority leader.
The Alaska Constitution and state statutes say that the governor should designate someone to step in as lieutenant governor in case the position were to become vacant. Palin named Schmidt to that position, and he was confirmed by the Legislature during the last session.
"We all voted to confirm Joe Schmidt and talked with him about filling the duties of lieutenant governor," Kerttula said. "As much respect as I have for Gen. Campbell, none of us have voted for him."
Chenault said confirmation may require a special session, if it is not Schmidt.
It is not even clear who would appoint a replacement for Parnell. Until the job becomes vacant with Parnell becoming governor, there's no job to fill.
Parnell's chief of staff, Jay Pullins, said they were reviewing the process with the Department of Law now.
"That's under review, we want to make sure everything is done correctly," he said.

If she stays in public life, then she'll become a representative of some fringe group or other that gets a lot of media exposure. Think Concerned Women for America or Focus on the Family.
But I suspect that once she other like-minded crazies like Melanie Morgan, Glen Beck, James Dobson, Michelle Malkin, Ken Blackwell, and company spend any significant amount of time together, Palin is going to find out that she doesn't actually get along with them, and they're not going to be willing to appease Palin.

Finally got around to reading the NY Times article on the war criminal McNamara.
This little tidbit got me thinking:
“After the war, my wife and I both came down with polio, if you can imagine, infantile paralysis,” Mr. McNamara remembered in his memoir. “My case was relatively light; I was out of the hospital in a couple of months. But she was in the hospital for nine months, and they thought she’d never lift an arm or a leg off the bed again.”
Unable to pay the hospital bills on a Harvard salary, he accepted a job offer from the Ford Motor Company.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/0...&

If there had been universal health care coverage in 1945, perhaps McNamara would never have had to take the Ford job, and just remained a "systems" and numbers Prof. at Harvard, and would never have been the big star at Ford that Kennedy tapped for Sec. Def.

Never underestimate the stupidity of...
Seventy-six percent of GOP voters have a favorable opinon of Sarah Palin despite her sudden resignation as Alaska governor, according to a Rasmussen report released today.
Although 40 percent of voters said they thought Palin's resignation hurt her chances at a 2012 presidential nomination, the sweetheart of the Republican Party still earned favorable opinions from 76 percent of voters -- 45 percent of that being very favorable -- and 24 percent of GOP voters said they would vote for her in a 2012 state primary putting her in second place behind Mitt Romney.

Let's see how this plays out. . .
Holder, 58, may be on the verge of asserting his independence in a profound way. Four knowledgeable sources tell NEWSWEEK that he is now leaning toward appointing a prosecutor to investigate the Bush administration's brutal interrogation practices, something the president has been reluctant to do. While no final decision has been made, an announcement could come in a matter of weeks, say these sources. . . http://www.newsweek.com/id/206300

Holder's spouse will, I hope, influence him to prosecute. From the same article:
She grew up in the Deep South under Jim Crow—her sister, Vivian Malone Jones, integrated the University of Alabama—and has a fierce sense of right and wrong. At a recent dinner in a leafy corner of Bethesda, Malone drew a direct line from the sins of America's racial past to the abuses of the Guantánamo Bay detention center. Both are examples of "what we have not done in the face of injustice," she said at one point, her Southern accent becoming more discernible as her voice rose with indignation.

A full 87 percent of American scientists see their political alignment as Democrat or Independent, according to a new Pew Research poll.
Surprisingly or not, just six percent declared themselves Republican, and only nine percent overall expressed support of conservative ideology. http://rawstory.com/blog/2009/07...are-republican/

A sign for Gonzales?
My brother graduated from TTU Law School and he says this almost invalidates his degree. His Republican office mates, also TTU grads are pissed. Alumni have commented on the local newspaper site they will not longer be donating. We're pissed. He will not be getting a warm welcome here.

I dunno. Seems to me 'a matter of weeks' has come to mean never when it comes to matters like this.
If it does happen, maybe Holder could (he certainly should) branch out into investigations of thingsl like;
- the illegal deception leading to the Iraq war (tens of thousands dead as a result)
-the theft of $BILLIONS in Iraq - vanished into thin air under the nose of J. Paul Bremmer
-illegal warrantless wiretapping
-illegal use of the DoJ for strictly partisan witch-hunts
-etc., etc., ad infinitum
And I'm leaning to the opinion that the financial collapse leading to the many layers of handouts for Goldman Sachs, IAG, and other connected corporations that were 'too big to fail' was a deliberate setup to transfer $TRILLIONS of public money to the oligarchs. But how the fuck do you prosecute a kleptocracy that was in full-blown operation for at least eight years? And hasn't stopped just because the administration has changed, BTW.

Long but informative article on the real estate crash, and why it's not over. As SBT has mentioned, commercial RE crash is soon to be the next major issue.
These guys are promoting investments in THEIR chosen venues, whatever the hell they are, against RE investing, but still I think they make a compelling case.
If nothing else, take a look at page 24.
