Gravatar I need to decide what to do tonight--watch the McChrist speech, or give myself that preemptive appendectomy I've been thinking about for the last, oh, seven or eight minutes.

Gravatar Inside the hall, delegates are going bananas over themselves and that old Top Gun “Danger Zone” song: “highway to the dangerzone, gonna take you right into the danger zone.” (A vote for McCain is a vote for danger!)

Outside, riot police are surrounding a group of (peaceful) protesters and refusing to let them march to the Xcel Center. The protest group is surrounded—I wasn’t able to get inside the perimeter.

Gravatar The police said we needed to leave, we showed them our press credentials. I said I was a reporter and that it was a public street. An officer struck me and knocked me backwards over a curb. I tried to get up, and three or four officers shoved me to the ground. Andy was maced. I got up, told them I was a member of the media, I asked them where to go. One of them struck me with his club. Eventually they jostled and threw me out of the circle.

Yeah, but he's just argued that it's OK to have an insurance company employee stand between you and your doctor, but NOT a bureaucrat. They're still banging away at that Reagan line, 'we're from the government and we're here to help.' - but people have to realize that they've been the damned government since the Contract With (ON!) America, and they've made government bigger, less efficient, and more corrupt.

Gravatar I think he only got shot down the once. The previous losses of material were in training accidents. I could be wrong about that, but it would have been unusual to have been a naval aviator in Vietnam, shot down and then recovered. Missions from carriers would have been against targets that couldn't be reached by any ground-based aircraft. Flying from a carrier is riskier, and you lose either weapons load, range, or both.

Gravatar TC - that was Heart's "Barricuda." He. Heh. Heh. HEH. HEHEHEHEHEHEHE!

And SBT - one of the training accidents was a BIG one, killed a few folks. Happened on a carrier. I'll look for the link.

Gravatar Hey, when you're fifth from the bottom of your Academy class, can't expect great things so whatever happens to McCain in this election, he has exceeded expectations.

Helps to set the bar very, very low....

Gravatar McCain Lost Five Military Aircraft

McCain, the "below par" pilot, eventually lost 5 military aircraft, the first during a training flight in 1958 when he plunged into Corpus Christi Bay while trying to land. The Navy ignored the crash and graduated McCain in 1960.

While deployed in the Mediterranean, the hard partying McCain lost a second aircraft. Timberg described the crash: "Flying too low over the Iberian Peninsula, he took out some power lines which led to a spate of newspaper stories in which he was predictably identified as the son of an admiral."

Unscathed, McCain returned to Pensacola Station where he was promoted to flight instructor for Naval Air Station Meridian in Mississippi. The airfield at Meridian, McCain Field, was named in honor of McCain's grandfather.

In 1964 McCain became involved with Carol Shepp, a model from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he had met at Annapolis. They were married in Philadelphia on July 3, 1965.

Flight instructor McCain lost a third aircraft while flying a Navy trainer solo to Philadelphia for an Army-Navy football game. Timberg wrote that McCain radioed, "I've got a flameout" before ejecting at one thousand feet. McCain parachuted onto a beach moments before his plane slammed into a clump of trees.

McCain lost his fourth plane on board the Forrestal on July 29, 1967 when a rocket inadvertently slammed into his bomb laden jet. McCain escaped, but the explosions that followed killed 134 sailors. McCain was transferred from the badly damaged Forrestal to the USS Oriskany. Shortly afterwards, on Oct. 26, 1967, he was shot down and captured by the Vietnamese.

Gravatar Oh, okay, Heart, not Joan Jett.

Gravatar "About 10:50 (local time) on the 29th, while preparations for the second strike of the day were being made near 19°9′5″N, 107°23′5″E,[3] an unguided 5-inch Mk-32 "Zuni" rocket, one of four contained in a LAU-10 underwing rocket pod mounted on a F-4 Phantom II, was accidentally fired due to an electrical power surge during the switch from external power to internal power.

A drawing of the stern of Forrestal showing the spotting of aircraft at the time. Likely source of the Zuni was F-4 No. 110. White's and McCain's aircraft are in the right hand circle. The rocket flew across the flight deck, striking a wing-mounted external fuel tank on a A-4 Skyhawk awaiting launch[3], either aircraft No. 405, piloted by LCDR Fred D. White[1], or No. 416, piloted by future U.S. Senator and Presidential candidate, LCDR John McCain.[4] The warhead's safety mechanism prevented it from detonating, but the impact tore the tank off the wing and ignited the resulting spray of escaping JP-5 fuel, causing an instantaneous conflagration. Other external fuel tanks overheated and ruptured, releasing more jet fuel to feed the flames which spread along the flight deck, leaving pilots in their aircraft with the options of being incinerated in their cockpits or running through the flames to escape."

There are bold pilots

There aren't old bold pilots

Gravatar I noted several weeks ago that if I were to write a screenplay about an alcoholic, womanizing, underachieving son and grandson of admirals being shot down and becoming a POW before finally getting in both houses of Congress and eventually running for President, I would, in the interests of authenticy and verisimilitude, have the alcoholic, womanizing, underachieving son and grandson of admirals getting drunk in a brothel the night before his fateful mission.

Gravatar Another song they've played several times is Celebrate Good Times by Kool and the Gang. How does that fit with their theme of how they're going to turn the country around by turfing out the (Republican incumbent) Washington insiders? What's next - Don't you Mess Up A Good Thing?

Their message is so fucked up you'd have to be brain dead or a member of the Lamestream Media not to notice.

Gravatar [Grandpa sucks in giving a presentation.]

Indeed. I can see what the words were trying to achieve, but the delivery seemed so flat to me. And yet, on PBS, they're saying it was a great speech--in fact, the greatest speech McPOW has given.

Gravatar Chef, if you set the bar low enough, any speech is a great one. Cicero is rolling in his grave, I'm sure.

Gravatar OK, I know this is belated, but McCain did call the Republicans "the party of Lincoln", and when anyone does that I always pull up this quote:

"Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital.
Capital is only the fruit of labor,
and could never have existed if Labor had not first existed.
Labor is superior to capital,
and deserves much the higher consideration." -- Abraham Lincoln

I know Nosy is quite familiar with that one.

Gravatar Tis posted at the top of my blog, I believe....

Gravatar It makes Lincoln sound like a Marxist.

"Capital is dead labor, which, vampire-like, lives only by sucking living labor, and lives the more, the more labor it sucks."
-- Karl Marx

Gravatar Or more accurately, it makes Marx look like a disciple of Abe Lincoln.

Gravatar Marx's ideas didn't evolve in a vacuum. I think the thing that resulted in his demoniation was the robber-baron capitalist establishment in the U. S. at the time. Pure social Darwinists, they had all the capital and weren't interested at all in labor getting their hands on any. The situation is not unlike the one our current economy is evolving into and was caused by an overly conservative Government and under-regulation of financial establishments.

Supported, oddly enough, by the Party of Lincoln and some of the biggest loser Presidents (Harding comes to mind) in our history. Harding, oddly enough, was elected because he just looked Presidential. Sound familiar?

Gravatar demoniation? Try "demonization." That's a word I should get right....

Gravatar Well I must tell you, MOST interesting from my point of view.

My Dad has been here at the house for DAYS, since last Thursday. I have been very gently indoctrinating, just by FACTS.

Lo and behold, Mr. Lifelong-Reupblican isn't convinced he (or my stepmom now) will vote for Obama, but they're very troubled about McCain now. He's actully made noises about NOT VOTING!

I didn't do the fire-breathing liberal on him, no. What I did do was the lesser of two evils and the EVIL OF TWO LESSERS!

That's what got under his skin. I criticized the shit out of Obama but pointed out facts, Facts FACTS.

That along with the YoutTube of the chick with the flower getting pepper-sprayed in Minn/St.Paul got him all unhooked from Republicans. They're NOT what he THOUGHT they were.

Gravatar Isn't "demoniation" the currency or arbitrage of "the pit"?

Gravatar " The situation is not unlike the one our current economy is evolving into and was caused by an overly conservative Government and under-regulation of financial establishments. "

The prevailing conditions in the run-up to the Great Depression as well. When creativity and productivity are rewarded, the economy will thrive. When capitalists collecting dividends are rewarded it will not. I think Ben Franklin should be listened to on this issue.

Gravatar Yep. Sale on GOPer souls, hardly used, three for a demoniation.

Gravatar GOPer souls, regardless of use, smell funny when you sautee them. I really don't have any use for 'em.

'Cept pointing and laughing, and that should make them a mere 10 for a demoniation.

Gravatar They smell kind of like burnt hair and meat a couple days gone....

Hard to get rid of GOPer souls - no substance.

I'd love to send something like that on to all I get nonsense-R emails from. I think it'd also increase traffic here.

Last one I got was the tax package differences. I hit snopes immediately and replied to all. Some came back whining, but they shut up about it.
Then again, maybe the jello-heads would vote for him anyway because of her. Punch the "R" and you get the babe too, man!

Gravatar get a brain mo(R)ans

Gravatar Time picks up on the same thing about his lousy delivery:

He's struggling, as he sometimes does -- misplacing the emphasis on words, sounding at times like he's reading the speech for the first time, losing energy during the sections on issues he's never been particularly passionate about, buring applause lines in a string of sentences. It's as if he can't bring himself to pretend he's not reading a teleprompter -- that the charade distracts and frustrates him. http://www.time-blog.com/ swampla...leprompter.html

Gravatar Barracuda is going to be a Republican anthem now? How about the Rocky and Bullwinkle theme?

SadButTrue | Homepage | 09.04.08 - 11:15 pm | #

I suggest the Itchy and Scratchy Show theme song...

Gravatar "that the charade distracts and frustrates him"
It's not the charade but the fact that he's on camera and not in the back rooms that really bothers him. That's my bet. He's used to the charade by now. It's just that it's being filmed...

Gravatar (pic cutline) Gov. Palin and her Eskimo husband enjoying some lean and healthy moose bacon.

How in the hell did Sarah Palin ever pass the vetting by McCain's people? This is unreal. Below are some actual quotes by Governor Palin during a series of interviews by the Anchorage Daily News in 2006 when she was running for Governor:

On Creationism:

The simple yet elegantly awkward moose proves God's creation and not evolution is the source of all life. How could something as oddly shaped and silly looking as a moose evolve through so-called "natural selection?" Is evolution a committee? There is nothing natural about a dorky moose! Only God could have made a moose and given it huge antlers to fight off his predatory enemies. God has a well known sense of humor, I mean He made the platypus too.

On oil exploration and drilling in the ANWR:

God made dinosaurs 4,000 years ago as ultimately flawed creatures, lizards of Satan really, so when they died and became petroleum products we, made in his perfect image, could use them in our pickup trucks, snow machines and fishing boats. Now, as to the ANWR, Todd and I often enjoying caribou hunting and one year we shot up a herd big time, I mean I personally slaughtered around 40 of them with my new, at the time, custom Austrian hunting rifle. And guess what? That caribou herd is still around and even bigger than ever. Caribou herds actually need culling, be it by rifles or wolves, or Exxon-Mobil oil rigs, they do just great!

On Alaskans serving overseas in Iraq:

Well, God bless them, and I mean God and Jesus because without Jesus we'd be Muslims too or Jewish, which would be a little better because of the superior Israeli Air Force.

Nov. 5th just got a lot closer.

Gravatar There seems to be some controversy about whether Joe Biden said he would pursue criminal charges against members of the Bush/Cheney cabal should he and Barack Obama be elected. The reasoning behind the signals that he would NOT prosecute is that it makes the Democrats look bipartisan or non-partisan during the election. As if that's what everyone wants *snort*.

Future dictionaries will have to add a definition to the word
bipartisan (adj) - "part of the conspiracy." (when applied to a Democrat)
- "until we get back in power, then it's a whole new ballgame" (when applied to a Republican)

Gravatar Here's an example in the form of a headline in the New York Times: McCain Vows to End ‘Partisan Rancor,’ Seizing Theme of Change From Rival
(email alert version of headline)

First of all, obviously it's the Republicans who have created and sustained the partisan rancor, and who as everyone knows will go right back to the most partisan politics imaginable if they ever get majorities in Congress again.

Second, WTF is this idea that the Theme of Change is like the object of a game of capture the flag - something that can be seized from your rival? Wavy Gravy advises you to stay away from whatever the hell this guy has been smoking.

Gravatar An editorial in the NYT echoes exactly what I said a couple threads ago. The Republicans are so desperate that they're trying to run against themselves. "Elect us and we'll take on those damned corrupt Republicans." If they were sincere about that every incumbent who has served two terms or more should be asked to resign.

The Party in Power, Running as if It Weren’t

And Glennzilla exposes Republican bipartisanship for what it is - an attempt to have the Democratic party play nice while they themselves continue to fling poo at every opportunity.

The GOP's cheerful viciousness

Gravatar Good morning.

Gravatar Interesting speculation here. Apparently, the screen behind McCain showed Walter Reed Middle School in California, and odd choice. Could it be that somebody thought they were showing Walter Reed Hospital?
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/arc...ives/ 213806.php

Gravatar Mornin'

The whole notion of 'bi-partisan' is a facade given that there are supposed to be 2 parties. It's a mask to cover the fact that there is only one party. The word 'cooperation' could just as easily be used, but Congress prefers to disguise the one party system with a nice fluffy word and encourage people that it is in their best interest that it be fostered. And the sheep nod and bleet.

Gravatar Biden and Obama will pursue no charges against their predecessors. This is called 'bait and switch' and it's an illegal tactic in marketing. But politics know no such ethics.

Gravatar 102 arrested at RNC after Rage concert

http://rawstory.com/news/2008/ 10...third_0904.html

Gravatar The headlines here are blaring "Hundreds of Protesters Arrested on Last Night of RNC Convention". What they fail to mention in the headline AND the article is that the vast majority of those arrests were ILLEGAL and IMPROPER, and many of them involved police brutality.

Gravatar I've been thinking a lot this week about insane McCains' POW experience. I have concluded that since this event in his life seems to be what defines him, and since he clearly defines himself as a nasty, cruel, torture-loving, war mongering hateful man (among a laundry list of other attributes), then he deserves everything he got as a POW. If that's the best he can walk away with from that experience; obviously learned nothing about humanity, then I don't feel one iota of sympathy for his POW experience.

Ellie has spoken.

Gravatar Regarding Biden, realistically, I don't know if it's naive to have much hope that they will pursue criminal charges, but it would be suicide to say that they would. So with that in mind, I note that Biden really kind of fudged around the issue. There was no unequivocal "off the table" remark, so I'm willing to wait and see.

Gravatar Shit, they're such nasty people that I've been thinking that Palin will deserve anything that's coming to her as a consequence of her corruption.

Gravatar Speaking of Palin, here's an interesting op-ed from a resident of Wasilla. Read all the way down, at first it seems like she is pro-Palin, but the real meat turns up some very interesting facts about Palin's term as Mayor.

http://www.thepresidentialcandid...e-kilkenny/741/

"She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn’t even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later–to the delight of the lawyers involved!"

Gravatar Wingtards, and their Police helpers, will go to some pretty stunning lengths to avoid letting the truth get anywhere near them. Chimpy's bubble is now selling lots for development.

Gravatar 22,000,000 ÷ 5000 = 4,400

That's only $4400 per person, which, if you take the tax cuts offered by the McCain campaign and average them out among the American people, will surely be covered. . .

Gravatar Oh pshaw, MOOSEBURGERS AND CARIBOU SAUSAGES FOR EVERYONE!

Gravatar He Green Lib, guess what? I'm going to the Bioneers Conference in Cali in October! Woo hoo!

Gravatar I don't know about moose or caribou hunting, but I want to draw attention to the wolf hunts they do there in Alaska (I'm betting that she does this too).

They hunt these animals by chasing them on snowmobiles, with helicopters and planes until the poor things drop from exhaustion. When the animal goes down, unable to move or escape, these inhumane pieces of raw sewage pull out their rifltes and shoot the wolves.

In my book, this is the lowest one can possibly go, and it is my feeling that ANYONE who engages in this kind of activity deserves only one fate--- to be dumped out onto the permafrost and chased down with a snowmobile and executed in the same manner as they execute these animals. Either that, or be placed in a cage with a pack of hungry wolves, and be torn apart.

Gravatar They got nothing jump. NOTHING. In fact, they've got so little they're forced to run against themselves. Pathetic.

If they were sincere about bringing change to Washington they would call on incumbents of both parties who had served two terms or more to resign.

Gravatar [If they were sincere about bringing change to Washington they would call on incumbents of both parties who had served two terms or more to resign.]

They'd also be calling for the criminals in both parties to turn themselves in to the Hague.

Gravatar Later, friends.

Gravatar On the subject of incumbents being elected and re-elected until they're sufficiently entrenched to do some real harm, Jon Stewart broached that subject with Newt Gingrich the other night, echoing my observation that even though Congress has a dismal approval rating, local voters never seem to think that it's their guy's fault. Incumbents get re-elected at a rate between 80 and 90%.

No, I don't suppose you do. Have a good day Doc.

Gravatar It's GAME ON for the Canadian federal election, which will be over and done with before your November vote. I just got a visit from my local Liberal candidate, a very nice woman with an impressive background. Provided as a comparison to your political spectrum (I haven't even looked at these sites myself yet):

http://www.betsymcgregor.ca
http://www.liberal.ca

It looks like the Liberals have moved to the left since the last election, I guess trying to get more votes from supporters of the New Democratic Party and the Green Party, who are even further to the left. Even the Canadian Conservative Party are to the left of your Democrats.

Gravatar [ You don't take a risk on an unknown freak of a candidate with minimal experience, current investigations, dirty laundry, and a knocked up teen when you don't have to... ]

I can tell you that for five and a half years, John McCain didn't have the choice to take a risk on an unknown freak of a candidate with minimal experience, current investigations, dirty laundry, and a knocked up teen.

Gravatar So it seems that that school in North Hollywood that the McCain campaign accidentally used as a speech backdrop instead of a picture of Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital is about to release a statement. http://talkingpointsmemo.com/arc...ives/ 213923.php

Thursday afternoon, Heart e-mailed out a statement regarding vice-presidential candidate Sarah “Barracuda” Palin’s use of their similarly monikered song at the Republican National Convention: “The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission,” it read. “We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music….” http://slog.thestranger.com/ 2008...mccain_campaign

Poor bugger, I feel SO sorry for him. After having endured an ordeal like that McCain should take it easy and retire. At 72 and probably suffering the lingering effects of sustained captivity he deserves a rest. It would be unconscionable to expect one of the nation's heroes to take on the stressful duties of the presidency. Especially at his age.

Killing of Mayor's 2 Dogs Justified, Pr. George's Finds
Officers in Raid Threatened, Sheriff Says

By Rosalind S. Helderman and Aaron C. Davis
Washington Post Staff Writers
Friday, September 5, 2008; Page B01

The Prince George's County Sheriff's Office has concluded in an internal review that its deputies were justified when they shot and killed two dogs belonging to the mayor of Berwyn Heights during a July drug raid, Sheriff Michael Jackson said yesterday.

The sheriff said that one dog was engaging an officer and that the other was running toward a second officer at the time the black Labs were shot, but the ruling did not satisfy the mayor, who said the inquiry was incomplete and misleading.

Jackson released the results of the review in response to a scientific examination of the dogs' carcasses by a veterinarian with the Maryland Department of Agriculture at the request of Mayor Cheye Calvo. The necropsy concluded one dog was shot four times and the other twice, including once in the dog's back legs.

Calvo said the necropsy has bolstered his contention that neither dog was threatening law enforcement officers during the raid and that one dog was shot from behind as he fled into a back room.

Gravatar I am speechless when it comes to Pallin.
I think she says it all quite nicely for herself.

I really want to be polled on my opinion about her.
I am sure I could come up with something

Gravatar [-Ellie | Homepage | 09.05.08 - 1:50 pm-]

Yeah but think on the positive side - if McCain gets elected there'll be another big tax cut. Well, if you make more than $750,000 a year there will. Woo Hoo!

And speaking of libraries, my local just called to let me know that they have the copy of The Handmaid's Tale that I put on reserve. From what I've heard the end of the world as we know it due to ecological disaster might be preferable to the dystopia that Margaret Atwood describes in that book.

Looking forward to Unruly Book Club.

Gravatar I might compare her not to Harriet Miers, but to Monica Goodling.

Gravatar I've learned that The Handmaid's Tale takes place around Harvard U, where Atwood went to school. It's never named, but references are made to former lecture halls, former libraries, etc., that would be recognizable to people familiar with the campus.

Gravatar WWSPD?

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A deadly American-led raid on a Pakistani village embarrassed the government and eroded support for the pro-U.S. presidential front-runner Thursday just two days before the election.

Furor continued to mount over the first known foreign ground assault inside Pakistan against a suspected Taliban haven. The government summoned the U.S. ambassador for an official protest, while Parliament passed resolutions of condemnation.

Gravatar You mean she's not ready?

despite the gaggle of requests and pressure from the media, Gov. Sarah Palin won't submit to a formal interview anytime soon. She may take some questions from local news entities in Alaska, but until she's ready -- and until she's comfortable -- which might not be for a long while -- the media will have to wait.

Gravatar Oops. Here: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/arc...ives/ 214044.php

Gravatar [-tireiron chef | Homepage | 09.05.08 - 3:48 pm-]

She's not ready to face tough questions from the media, but she'll be OK to answer the red phone at 3 am and discuss the outbreak of WWIII?!?

Yeah, I'll buy that - but first I've got to sell these magic beans I've just spent my entire fortune on. I was told by the guy that sold them to me that I'm bound to make a tidy profit. He had a funny name - Mr. Feefiefofum.

Gravatar But the magic beans really were magic beans, and Jack did make a tidy profit.

Better, I think, to finance an expedition to find the last surviving tyrannosaurus rex.

Gravatar Just plant the magic beans and think happy thots.
