Gravatar How does Senator Kennedy observe July 19 each year?

Gravatar Yeah, we're all throwing him a big party. A swim party in Chappaquiddick. You should come. Bring the whole fam-damily.

Gravatar Bro, I was sure you were going to same something about the anniversary of Chapaquitick? I don't know if that would be too below his big belt for you?
But isn't it right around now or the past few weeks?
Mike

Gravatar Repubs "nuke option" - voting on judges on an up or down vote, rather than by majority or supermajority.

Dems nuke option - Ted Kennedy's bellyflop at the mall eradicates half of Northern Virginia, parts of Maryland, and everything east of K St.

Gravatar Americans shouldn't torture. We didn't torture the nazis, and they were a hellavalot worse, and killed way more Americans. I learned all about the Geneva Conventions during my time in the service (Air Force), and was always proud that we didn't stoop to such low levels.
But hey, because some sad sack Kennedy is the only one talking about it, let's all have a snicker at his expense. It will help us forget our shame, and the shame that we bring on our country by looking the other way.

Gravatar We had alot of fun on the Rush Limbaugh show with this today. What started the ball rolling was when Rush referred to Kennedy's "celebrating the anniversary of Abu Ghraib / Abu Ghraib Day", et cetera.

Then callers offered their ideas for what gifts to give on this "Holiday", (panties, dog-leashes, the game of Twister™, (to be played nude, of course)...)

What got me was when one caller wanted to complain that with all this talk of "gifts" the Abu Ghraib Holiday was becoming too commercialized!

(Well... I laughed)

Gravatar Ryan,

For the 1,437th time: no one was tortured by the US at Abu Ghraib. Some prisoners were humiliated by out of control troops, but no one was tortured. The out of control troops were punished. The officers who let discipline get so lax are on the hot seat, and likely will see permanent black marks on their careers for this.

Keep telling the torture lie all you want. We'll keep correcting the record.

Gravatar Another lie to debunk Ryan:
If you think there were no abuses in WWII on the part of the Americans you are sorely wrong. Whatever you feel about it, some Americans did take out some of their anger on the Nazis in ways the Geneva convention would not approve of.

Abu Ghraib not only was not torture, it wasn't anything new for any country in the theater of war. Abuses happen in every war by every party.

The bottom line is that the American military has performed admirably in Iraq, and in a most humane fashion. Shame on you Ryan for seeking to discredit them in some liberal handwringing. I wonder how much you crowed about Saddam Hussein's abuses when he was in power, or how much you even cared.

Gravatar Did anyone else find it amusing that he would touch upon "simulated drowning" during his speech- much more a violation of human rights than "actual drowning".

Gravatar This is the difference between the Dems and the Republicans:

Dems want Americans to feel bad about their country...they want our country to have some inferiority contest.

Republicans want Americans to feel good about our country, and justifiably so.

Gravatar Other things about Abu Ghraib too seldom mentioned: the abuses were discovered by members of the military, who informed their superiors, who launched an investigation, who prepared indictments, and who informed the press once they knew it wouldn't jeapordize the investigations and harm their ability to prosecute the wrongdoers.

Yes, it was shameful, but it's astounding how more people don't want to acknowledge all that--or the fact that the worst of the abuses amounted to nasty things you see in the annual fraternity hazings all over America.

Gravatar Proof positive that the Army undervalues its services.

Do you have any idea how much it costs to get humiliated like that in America? And the damn Army is giving it away for free.

And now you have people even going so far as to complain about the free service.

Ingrates.

Gravatar I just about fell over laughing at that comment Taranto made. It is sad that that's the case, because it should not be funny. What is with Kennedy? What planet is this guy from? I cannot believe people continually vote for him.

And what is the deal with dredging up this so-called torture incident again. What kind of anniversary is that other than the Dems attempt to spin and change the subject. That's really what Kennedy does when he keeps trying to mark everything as an anniversary.

Gravatar I agree, this kennedy crap is sickening. WHen is going to say something positive for the world to hear instead of more out-of-date liberal hand wringing

Gravatar Beautiful........!

Gravatar Those of you who naively contend that Americans didn't torture Nazis (or Japanese, for that matter) little understand the horrors of war. In WWII, the big one, Americans sometimes shot prisoners rather than herd them to the rear. I'm not judging them. If I saw my friends blown to bloody bits, I would return the favor at every opportunity. Gen. Grant said that war is hell for a good reason.

Gravatar Go Arthur Go!
Great pithy piece.
Reminds me too of the day I walked up my hill to vote Johnny H back in.
Some geyser had put up posters all around with one stark b/w pic of the Abu Ghraib affair, handwringingly captioned

"What have we done?"
I dunno, I thought, imagining the author whining it at me,
Yeah What?

Gravatar PacRim Jim:
"War is Hell" is actually a Shermanism.

Gravatar Ryan, get some perspective. How about a little comemmoration for your brothers in arms (you claim)that were executed by the Iraqis?

www.cnn.com/2003/US/03/27/sprj.irq.pows.executed

Gravatar Abu Ghraib day getting too 'commercialized'.. Brilliant...

And you wanna see _real_ torture? Get me in a room with an Al Qaeda guy, a power drill, some pipe cleaners and some duct tape, and _I'll_ show you torture...

Gravatar In one respect, though, Ryan is right, and that is that self-criticism is very American, and helps our military become more humane all the time, while also being lethally effective. Inasfar as human beings are imperfectible, there will always be problems for the comfortable suburbanite to shriek about. But ask an Iraqi soldier if he'd rather be a prisoner of al Qaeda or a prisoner of the US, and I have no doubt what the answer would be.

Gravatar Ryan is just another youth brainwashed by the MSM. I doubt he even knows what is actually going on over there.

Americans shouldn't torture.

You Think? That's Brilliant!

Problem is what if GI Joe is the one being tortured? Will it be front page news? Only if it's showing that Bush's policies led to his humiliation.

Ryan, try not to be a douche-bag for the rest of your life and open your eyes to what's really going on. The main-stream media fills your head full of Ideas and next thing you know you're beating up vets @ a peace protest.

Research things before you speak around here and you'll be a happier man by far!

Gravatar PacRim Jim, you speak truly about SOLDIERS killing, but the others here were asserting that it was NEVER American policy, overt or covert, to torture, or kill POWs, or shoot animals, or rape, or maim...

THAT distinction is one STILL upheld, I'm proud to say, and STILL distinguishes America from the moral cesspools of Saddamite terrorists!

Gravatar How about the anniversary of all the beheadings. Can't piss off the "insurgents" though. After all they are more civilized. They would never put panties on someone's head. They just make you stand up with a broken leg, then shoot you.

Gravatar Dean Esmay: I've known frat hazings in Belgium to get as gross as anything at Abu Ghraib. Some actual examples:

* freshmen forced to swim in a cesspool
* half-naked freshwomen being rubbed in with syrup, and freshmen forced to lick it off
* freshmen (and -women) forced to do military drill exercises wearing only military boots (in front of a huge crowd of fellow students)
* one particularly notorious frat (known as "Boves", Latin for "bulls") forced candidate members to copulate with a cow.
* we had several incidents in which students were crippled for life after being thrown out of upper-story windowns tied to mattresses (which came loose) or being forced to jump into a concrete put full of cow dung (which turned out to be shallower than the arseholes thought, so a couple guys broke their backs).

And so on and so forth. I won't even get into what happens in prisons: the lyrics to Tool's "Prison Sex" explain this much better than I can.

Gravatar Rick asks a good question. Why DO the Democrats "dredge this up"? Well, why does Ted Kennedy, in particular. Because if every day is a holiday, every day is a day to drink! And frankly, the Democrats NEED an excuse to get wasted.

Gravatar Ted Kennedy, the "senior balloon from Massachusetts" has become a one trick pony...just trot him out for some America bashing and self-loathing and then return him to his bottle...

Gravatar What a bloviating pig. Go have another beer Teddy. Everything that comes out your mouth should be blowing out your ass.

Gravatar Kennedy stays in power because he gets pork for the local unions. The Big Dig was supposed to have been done over a decade ago.

Gravatar This weekend is the 30th anniversary of the fall of Saigon.

Wonder if ol' Uncle Teddy will have anything to say about *that* anniversary?

Gravatar Mike, waiting for Kerry to beam about how he stopped the American hegemon.

Gravatar Ryan; US troops during WWII did indeed carry out summary executions of SS gaurds at the Dachau Concentration camp. www.scrapbookpages.com/DachauScrapbook/ contents.html
if ever anyone deserved to executed it was the SS at the camps.
It would be a healthy thing for the liberal dems to stop harping about the poor souls at Abu Garib and Gitmo and start watching how the enemy treats it's prisoners...three hots and a cot are not among the ammenities offered by Zarqawi, et.al

Gravatar Fire:

IIRC, at some of the camps they simply didn't do very much to protect the guards from their victims.
