What an unbelievable tempest in a teapot! If we spend our time and energy nit-picking stuff like this and trying to bring down a reasonably mainstream guy like Chris Matthews, the democracy (and Democratic party) is doomed. If you watch Matthews regularly, you'll see that he asks tough questions of everyone and that he effectively and provocatively frames questions in terms of how people on the opposing side of the issue see it -- even if it is an exagerated view. That's the point. Are we so politically powerless in this country that we'll waste time on Matthews when one party has control of the House, Senate, and Whitehouse? We're doomed ... doomed ... I tell you.
NOTE FROM JOHN: Linz, if you watch Chris Matthews regularly you'll see that he regularly launches sleazy attacks on Democrats while calling for George Bush to be put on Mt. Rushmore. But this is about far more than Chris Matthews. For decades, the right has attacked the media mercilessly as being "left-wing" so that now the media goes out of its way to be right-wing just to avoid criticism. We have sat back and let it happen. Now we're fighting back. The media will learn that there is also a price to be paid for right-wing bias, that's what this campaign is about.

The very idea that Chris Matthews is a rightwinger is absurd. He has carried the water of the Democratic party for decades as a journalist, and before that was a Democratic staffer.

From Broadcast News:
What do you think the Devil is going to look like if he's around? Nobody is going to be taken in if he has a long, red, pointy tail. No. I'm semi-serious here.
He will look attractive and he will be nice and helpful and he will get a job where he influences a great God-fearing nation and he will never do an evil thing... he will just bit by little bit lower standards where they are important. Just coax along flash over substance... Just a tiny bit. And he will talk about all of us really being salesmen. And he'll get all the great women.
Matthews claims to love movies, so I think this is both accurate & apropos -

What's the problem? The comments did not make any sort of claim of equivalence between OBL and Moore. They just reflect the accurate view that much of the rhetoric of the left is perfectly useable by the Islamic terrorists of the world. I would think that Moore would find this a compliment, that people from all walks of life have come to agree that it is reasonable to blame everything on conspiracies between Halliburton, the Saudi royal family, Bush/Cheney, etc.
And it's completely irrefutable that it really is politically bad to have your enemy rooting for you (and they clearly are) and using your own words (accurately and in context) to buttress their own position.

Chris Matthews is slime. Anyone calling for him to be less biased and more principled is absurd. Anyone saying that he has been carrying the torch for Democrats is even more absurd. He is a right-wing shill and always has been. Just like all the other right-wing "populists" like Bill O'Reilly and Tim Russert. A big old batch of fuckin' right-wing cronyism. Disgusting.

Chris Matthews regularly questioned the logic of going to war in Iraq. That was YEARS ago. More recently I've become disappointed in the way he seems to jump over important hot-point issues... only to soft-soap conservative guests like Mr. New York-Rudi G. I think he tries too hard to find middle ground on issues. He does not play Hardball anymore. He lobs softballs and sloppy curves most of the time.

LOW BALLER is so appropos for you. You are either 'FISHTOWN' or 'Swamp Poodle' Philadelphian. So typical of either of those areas, with the distastful depiction of anything low and slow... YOU were the cause of suggesting that Mrs Corretta Scott King's funeral was being Politicized. Tuned into MSNBC just to hear your reaction to Lowry's on time poem...
Naturally you aimed at your spitoon and spit it out...
Dr and Mrs King was all that was Political, what would make you believe that either of their funerals would be anything but political. They were that kind of FOLK... Unlike you, who is such a right wing low baller, with you head so far unaligned with the People of the United States, except those in your part of town in Philly, you wouldn't know.

Friends,
I too have become ill of Hardball and its host. I used to watch it daily but no londer. I too was a loyal fan. I appreciated Matthews but like MSNBC Chris has lost touch with his roots and has gravitated towards the suits and dollars of the right. But you all are correct- he grills Democrats while letting Republicans fly in and out as they please. A liberal bias! ha! That's absolute bullshit. He admitted to voting for Bush, twice. I am a Registered Republican, but in the past 3 years have found a new home with the Democratic Party. Chris Matthews loves to have the tough no so spin zone but both he and Silly Billy Boy share idealogy. I love how pathetically his eyes light up when he plays skit after skit from the SNL clip. Both he and SNL have declined in recent years and the remark about Moore only highlights the fact.

You folks have not been watching Hardball and Chris Matthews long enough to know he is a Democrat of long standing and any recent comments are just evidence of his wanting a headline or two. He is usually uninformed about the facts of any new story and if it wasn't in some movie, he cannot talk about it intelligently. Hey, he worked for the worst president in my lifetime, Jimmy (knock the US whenever you can) Carter and then Tip O'Neill and heaven only knows why Tip needed him around- certainly not for more political savvy. This guy will burn out all on his own. The question is why did MSNBC keep him and dump some of their other hosts?

It could be that Mr. Matthews like other TV networks may have some presure put on him by head TV execs to be on the side of the President. However, we find that this President has lied again about the Katrina disaster. It is not that he just lied but he manipulated some as he listed tentatively about the destruction that the storm could cause by the experts and still went on a vacation. What does that tell you? I have absolute confidence that these so called push supporters are going to feel like they have been had.

Chris Matthews is a moderate Democrat, and, yes, he does play "Hardball" with his own party--as he should. It is time that Democrats except constructive criticism from their own party, even from the moderate ones--some call this tactic, "lighting a fire underneath" them. Let's get real, just because a known liberal criticizes the Democrats doesn't mean that he has all of sudden become Republican. C'mon, if Joe Scarborough can chastise Bush on a regular basis and is still considered to be a Republican, then Chris Matthews can hold his own party accountable and still be considered a Democrat. Clearly Matthews show is all about accountability--we can't all be "yes-men."

I'd be fine with Matthews playing "Hardball" with Dems if he did anything like that with Republicans. He doesn't. He did dissent on Iraq fairly soon, but he never stays on the issue very long. He's genuinely psycho on the question of the Clintons. Mention Hillary and he starts frothing at the mouth.
I think he's the very definition of a dupe. Down deep, in some dimly-remembered part of himself, he keeps an old, faded copy of the democratic principles. But he frames every issue just the way the RNC does. Has he become a Republican? I don't think so; he's become a Beltway Insider, and that means he sucks up to power. If FDR was still around, he'd suck up to him. He likes him some powerful men. Him and Timmeh should put on "Brokeback MSNBC," 'cause they both got a hankerin' for W in that flight suit.

I too find it hard to watch Chris Matthews carry water for Republicans.
Sadly, the cable news organizations and the talking heads employed by them have been reduced to becomming nothing more than ratings whores, Mr. Matthews and Hardball has become one of the biggest offenders.
Having said that, I understand why Mr. Matthews plays "softball" with his Republican guests, if he dared to play "hardball" and expose his guests as the frauds they are he would never have the access he enjoys.
What then, whould happen to his ratings?

I watched Matthews last evening, he had to bring up " everytime I see that clip of Clinton working the ropes and he slips his arm around Monica's neck....! Well, I understand the dig, yet at the same time, I do not care. I think most Americans still do not care about ML. But I do care that the sitting president has American Blood on his hands. I am not just referring to Iraq. We have so many major issues, Borders, Ports, Health Care, Katrina, Social Security, poverty, loosing the middle-class... Bring up those hard issues Matthews! How anyone wants to associate themselves with this administration, baffles the brain. The disgrace, putting themselves above the Constitution, the Congress afraid to Stand up to these War Mongers. This Administration has not only tossed the Constitution in the trash, but slapped the face of every American. The Media, why are you not all over this. Bush stood and admitted to the country we are in Iraq under False CIA intelligence. That he, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfield to start, sent OUR American Troops into Harms Way Knowingly. What is that not important? Well shame, shame on all of YOU! Want ratings, there you go! Tell it like it really is. The President of the United States, Knowingly, premediated, sent our troops into a War resulting in death of greater than 2400 American Troops and permanent dismemberment of greater than 20,000 American Troops. What is wrong here, why is this being ignored. People talked on the news, every hour of the day and night about a stain on a blue dress. Well get the damn thing dry cleaned. But you all should be on Keith Obermanns puppet theater. That is not a jab at Keith. That is a fact! What are you afraid of? Report the War, SUPPORT OUR TROOPS! HONOR our Troops enough to report the truth and get this Dictatorship out of OUR House. Where the Hell are you people coming from. Where is the American Media that covers the truth and PROMISE TO ASK THE HARD QUESTIONS, UNTIL YOU GET AN ANSWER? Then Start ASKING??? Beginning with the Congress, why are they NOT putting this President and present administration in check. That is Your Jobs. This should be the Top of the things to do on everyones list!

I stopped watching "Hardball" when Matthews started inviting on the fanatics, e.g., Michael Ledeen, Frank Gaffney, etc, and then giving them a pass. He used to have some decency. I remember his mocking of Dick Armey when that intellectual titan said Palestinians had no right to live on the West Bank. Matthews: "Where should they live, Norway?" His challenge forced an Armey staffer to "clarify" those remarks. Sadly, Matthews has joined the rest of the Washington chattering classes (most notably Christopher Hitchens) who have decided that 9/11 is like Pearl Harbor and Bush is like Roosevelt. That frame is wrong on both counts.

Chris Matthews is a conflicted soul.
In his "heart of hearts" I believe he is truly a compassionate person and someone who seeks truth, but he is "addicted" to the power and prestige that the right-wing, alpha Republicans seem to exude. Chances are, he has felt this way his entire life.
This is why his opinions seem so schizophrenic. They are the result of a decidedly insecure, (and slightly misogynistic) man.

If you are going to comment on Chris Matthews "alleged" right-winged biased, please offer some specific examples. I believe that many of his leftist critics, clearly, are not listening to what is really being said during his show. Matthews succesfully uses the socratic method playing "hardball" with the most right of the right-wing--his questions often point attention to Bush's lack of support on many issues--from both the D and R parties: the now put to rest Dubai issue, the premise of the war, Supreme Court, Katrina, amongst others. He does the same for Democrats who are not "stepping up to the plate" often questioning those whom he supports--I believe Matthews really likes H. Clinton, as do I, however, he clearly thinks that she's definately needs to fine tune her approach if she is really going to win-over and, ultimately represent the Dem party this upcoming presidential election.
Onto another topic...I do want to comment on Matthews commical debate over the academy award winning "pimp" song from Crash...yes, I agree, we do not want the children of Amer. singing, "it's hard out here for a pimp." Amongst a group of bad nominees, this song was definately the worst of the group.

It's revealing that charges levelled against Matthews on this site are very inspecific.
Your complaint reads:
"Chris Matthews has repeatedly compared Americans who are concerned about the war in Iraq to Osama bin Laden."
Gee...I thought you guys told us that we should respect diversity?
And when you libs told us that Moore's charges through his movie carried weight and should be looked into, you were all just kidding?

He has been sucked into the big money and power D.C. crowd and right now that is totally owned by big buck Republicans. Too bad Matthews has sold out because he will never be able to get his reputation as a "hardballer" back. Matthews should think about signing up with Fox News instead. It is interesting to be living in the USofA today--a time without J.E. (Pink Tutu) Hoover to provide nightmares to all of those students protesting to end the Vietnam War and to expose the "insurgent" FBI informant from their own ranks.
Instead, I can be completely stripped of my own citizenship for speaking out against this waste of time war in Iraq that we surely will never win. (Patriot Act revised) We can never fix what we have done for no good reason, nor do we have the permission to do so. From another angle, pretend Canada invaded the USA only to state later that the reasons were wrong behind the invasion. Would we actually want them to stay and "fix things?"
I find it funny that a television reporter would even say such phrases laced with straight-up propoganda like he himself is another of GW Bush's war planners--or is it "Freedom Brigade" just ad sand from the deserts while throwing it into the eyes of the American public so that the truth shall be hidden.
I am younger than that "Greatest Generation" (that has given us today's farce freedom fandango--thanks). Yet, I cannot recall another time from my own studies at school and beyond graduation where much of the media has gone oh so blindly into a future of grim war without questioning this criminal president--oops. I mean President False Pretenses (politically correct translation: LIAR!). Any reporter that wants to ride the GW train to Hell shall be remembered by this opinionated American, and, if we can survive GW, this particular reporter that compared Democrats to the enemy should sink with the RMS Bush as well as anyone else that goes bananas for murder and mayhem. God will remember this one reporter, but he will answer for it well before his days are done, and so will GW.

Bush on Rushmore is like PeeWee Herman on the dollar bill. Chris Matthews still thinks Bush's comment that "I can hear you and the rest of America can hear you" was a genuine historic gem like "Give me Liberty or give me death" I doubt Chris Matthews is capable of seeing the truth through the rose colored glasses of huge speaking fees from conservative lobbyists to discern a planted question and rehersed answer. After hearing President Bush answer a few simple unrehersed questions I find it hard to believe he (Bush) didn't respond with I'll try to denunciate a little louder. Chris is interesting to watch but a real twit to wonder why a prison facility in Iraq would have dog collars on prisoners after seeing prisoners intimidated by dogs - go figure..

IT WAS EARLY SEPT 11,2001 PRESIDENT CHRIS MATTHEW WAS HELPING SOME LITTLE CHILDREN WITH THEIR READING WHEN HE RECEIVED WORD THAT AMERICA WAS ATTACKED AND LATER AFTER MUCH INVESTIGATING IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE TERRORIST WERE FROM THE MIDDLE EAST AND AT THAT TIME OUR BIGGEST PROBLEM WAS IRAQ, IT WAS PAY BACK TIME FOR THE MIDDLE EAST AND IRAQ WAS THE HOME OF THE BIGGEST MURDERER IN THIS CENTURY THE GUYS NAME WAS SADDAM HE HAD TO BE TAKEN OUT TO SHOW THE WORLD YOU DO NOT ATTACK AMERICA NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE AND ALL THE LEADERS THAT CARED ABOUT AMERICA WERE IN AGREEMENT WITH PRESIDENT MATTHEW AND THUS THAT IS WHERE WE ARE TODAY BUT NOW PRESIDENT MATTHEW HAS A PROBLEM THAT NO ONE COULD HAVE IMAGINE A CIVIL WAR HAS ERUPTED BECAUSE THE LEADER OF THE MUSLIM WORLD died so suddenly that there was confusion as to who would be the next ruler of the Islamic state.to this day, The Islamic world is divided because of this issue (Shia vs. Sunni).SO PRESIDENT MATTHEW NOW HAS TO DECIDE CUT AND RUN OR STAY IT IRAQ AND FENISH THE JOB OF BRINGING FREEDOM TO THE 75 % OF THE PEOPLE THAT DO NOT CARRY THEIR RELIGION ON THEIR SHOLDER THIS IS NOT JUST AN AMERICA WAR BUT A WAR THAT DETERMINES WHETHER THE FREE WORLD STAYS FREE OR ALLOW MUSLIM TERRORIST TO RULE.
It does not matter how many peaceful Muslims there may be, they are no protection from the terrorist Muslim leaders and what they are fanatically bent on doing - by their own pronouncements - killing all of us "infidels." the peaceful Muslims are afraid to lend a hand. What would you do if the choice was shut up or die? In countries without freedom you will be killed. So who are we at war with? There is no way we can honestly respond that it is anyone other than the Muslim terrorists. Trying to be politically correct and avoid verbalizing this conclusion can well be fatal. There is no way to win if you don't clearly recognize and articulate who you are fighting. We can definitely lose this war, and as anomalous as it may sound, the major reason we can lose is that so many of us simply do not fathom the answer to the second question: What does losing mean? It would appear that a great many of us think that losing the war means hanging our heads, bringing the troops home and going on about our business, like post Vietnam. This is as far from the truth as one can get. What losing really means is: We would no longer be the premier country in the world. The attacks will not subside, but rather will steadily increase. Remember, they want us dead, not just quiet. If they had just wanted us quiet, they would not have produced an increasing series of attacks against us over the past 18 years. The plan is clearly for terrorists to attack us, until we are neutered and submissive to them, If we lose the war, our production, income, exports and way of life will all vanish as we know it. The Muslims Terrorist fully know what is riding on this war, and therefore are completely committed to winning, at any cost. We'd better

Chris Matthews leans far more to the left than to the right as evidenced in his harsh criticisms of Vice President Dick Chaney. While Michael Moore is not a murderer, he is an opportunistic film hack that profits from perpetuating the anti-American position while living the life of an American capitalist. Moore may not have flown the plane into the World Trade Center, but he sure does give aid and comfort to those that did.

I am so tired of the people in the media especially MSNBC saying that Obama is not playing the race card. What do you think his oratory style is about? What about what Oprah said at her rally invoking Dr. King's words? How about the comment he made months ago, that he was going to win Lousiana. Do you mean that because he is subtle, reporters can't figure it out. I don't think you are stupid, but you are corrupt, and blinded by your bias. Let me remind Mathews and Tucker etc. that not too long ago they were ridiculing Gore and supporting Bush. Look at the mess you people help create. You think that because now you attack Bush, you are exonerated from your part in this war. My father gave his life for this country and I deeply resent your lack of responsibility. Now, here we go again. Why isn't Obama under the microscope.I may not believe he is a sleeping cell, or the antichrist as some people think, but I do think you have to do your job as reporters and and inform us with the facts. Your judgement is nothing I trust. On another subject. Why isn't there any anchor women at MSNBC? You are so sexist. Isn't that why you think you have the right to insult Hillary and her family? I bet you were all bullies at school growing up. You know Mathews maybe you can stop spitting all over yourself. It's disgusting. My friend Mary said that to talk to you in person one needs an umbrella. How does this feel?

Chris Matthews must have been disciplined for his recent "rif" with Hillary. The NOW organization and other women groups have neutered him. If you notice, he has now changed his posture and is more pro Hillary and is often complimenting her and criticizing Obama. Looks like he isn't the only one that knows how to play hardball.

With Hardball not allowing comments, just how DO you send your thoughts to this guy Mathews - who IS an ass-kissing Bush supporter (at least on the air). Maybe he has to be - given a right-wing controlled media system. But that doesn't mean I have to like his point of view on everything.
This latest barrrage against Obama is an example of his bias. He knows full well that this is nothing more than another "destroy Howard Dean" type move on the part of media.
Does anybody know how to send these people a note? I'd like to tell him why I, a republican, SUPPORT Obama (McCain doesn't even know the difference between Suni and Shia and that can get my kids killed) ?

Well, Chris Matthews just stated that he loves politics and has always wanted the race between Senators Obama and Clinton to "go on to the very end". Ha! For weeks (maybe even months) he has said that Senator Clinton should drop out of the race. He even said, "what is she trying to prove, oh yeah, the Clinton's only care about winning", he said. Well, it again illustrates his (and other pundits) undeniable sexism. Such a sad day for our "democracy".

You should be ashamed of yourself with the way you put obama on a pedestal and insulted Hillary every day for months. She is the one to get us back on track after the last 8 years. John McCain will benefit from your big mouth in Nov.I guess that is what you are hoping for. You deserve to be fired from msnbc.along with russet and the rest of your gang. I know you have lost alot of your listeners. They watch O'Reilly

It is quite obvious that President has lied to the American public throughout his eight years in office. Why should he change now. He would not meet with Iran or any other nation opposed to his policies due to the fact that he could be forced to tell the truth for once. I'm so sick and tired of his continuing twisting of words that I no longer listen to anything he says. I can't wait for his term to end.

Here’s a quick run-down of some of Barack Obama’s questionable and disturbing associations:
* Rabidly anti-Israel Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi. The Obamas were regular dinner guests at Khalidi’s Hyde Park home for years.
* Terrorist sympathizer Ali Abunimah, who runs the viciously anti-Israel web site Electronic Intifada.
* Unrepentant Weather Underground terrorists William Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn.
* Reverend Jeremiah Wright. What more needs to be said?
* Anti-Israel foreign policy adviser Samantha Power — fired after calling Hillary Clinton a “monster.”
* Anti-Israel foreign policy adviser Robert Malley — fired when it was revealed he has been holding talks with Hamas.
* Hatem El-Hady, former official of the Hamas-linked charity Kindhearts, closed by the Justice Department. El-Hady’s web page—with Michelle Obama listed as an opt-in “friend”—suddenly vanished from the Obama campaign site with no explanation, after being exposed by LGF and others.
* Tony Rezko — a Chicago fixer currently in a whole lot of legal trouble.
There are more, I know; this is just off the top of my head.
I have never witnessed a presidential election in which a major candidate had this many skeletons in his closet.
God bless us if you join Kim Jong, Admadinejad, Chavez, Reverend Wright, Louis Farakkhan, and other great leaders in voting for this man.

Chris Matthews is one of the only people on the air that actually will listen to both sides. And accept when someonr shows he is wrong. I support him completely.
Now I received an email from my sister, I'm sorry to say, that was full of hate and implications (no proof) that Barack Obama is a terrorist and a Muslim. This was from ELIZABETH ROHN-NELSON a professed christian asking people to pray that GOD defeats Obama. The JESUS I know and worship would never accept this hate talk. I hope EVERYONE heard one of this country's most respected citizens and statesmen Gen. Colin Powell this morning. Barack IS NOT a muslim he is a Christian much more than the hate mongers trying to discredit him - BUT Mr. Powell said what if he was it shouldn't matter - THAT IS MY AMERICA - FREEDOM for ALL!!! Open and accepting of all people that embrace our values.

I am pissed, pleased excuse my language, but this country is filled with hate white mongers. I now understand more than ever about the KKK in this country who have infiltrated our government without their head covering, but have their suits on in important places. If WE as American can't call racisim what it is, we will end up with another civil war. And guess what, those who are not in our country will use this to their advantage. I believe Shawn Hannity, Fox Network and Rush Lindbaugh are RACIST INDIVIDUALS IN THEIR MOST SCENIC FORM. If others cannot see it, they are fools and want to keep their positions in the media. These news anchors are bias and refuse to go there "RACISM". The American public is not stupid...there is bias in the media... I believe we are on a downward spiral for any country to come in and infiltrate our country because of BIGOTRY. Why can't these reporters stop the retorick and begin to speak the whole truth. We are destroying our country and everyone is watching. The President should bring charges against those who change his words to insight the people of this country. When you are caught restating the President's statement (HANNITY) to harm this country should be brought to justice. IT'S CHARACTER ASSINATION AND I WOULD HAVE THEIR ASS IN A SLING. THE PRESIDENT NEEDS TO STOP THE BLANTANT LIES THAT FOX,LINBAUGH, HANNITY AND ANYONE ELSE WHO CHANGES HIS SPEEACH SHOULD BE DEALT WITH SWIFTLY. PRESIDENT OBAMA NEEDS TO COME OUT SWINGING BECAUSE HE IS NOT ONLY DEFENDING HIS FAMILY, BUT THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES. A lot of people are sick of this shit.
