Come off it with the "gay-bashing" stuff. If you want to be widely innaccuarate, fine. GLAAD's not sensationilizing this, they choose to take the high ground and discuss it as it actually was.

Chris Matthews covert slanders are "submiminabable" comments that influence the naive viewers opinion without Chris acknowledging he is blatantly biased.

Matthews used to say that his wife wasn't appreciative of some of his comments about Hillary Clinton. I wonder how she feels about his more recent exercise in right wing pandering for ratings.

Gravatar I would like him to apologize for his left wing bias. Badgering Michelle Malkin to the point where Matthews suggested a false statement and then berated Malkin for the statement she never made 14 times.

Gravatar this is about ratings

they're trying to turn him into MS/NBC's version of Bill O'Reilly and the rest of the hatefucks

he's a clown, seriously i think half the fucking audience must be the people who are always so offended they have to bitch about it all the time

no such thing as bad publicity

Gravatar Hey Cog,

Present a factual defense of Malkin's false assertion that Kerry earned a Purple Heart by intentionally wounding himself to get out of Viet Nam.

If you can't, it's obvious that you're confusing liberal bias with manifest reality.

Gravatar I don't want Tweety to apologize for anything. I just want him to shove off for Fox, where journalism means never having to say you're sorry.

Gravatar There should NEVER, EVER be another Democrat on Hardball or the Chris Matthews show. Patronizing his show is an endorsement of this man as some sort of legitimate broadcaster. He's not legitimate. Not anymore.

Gravatar ignore Cog. Just a pathetic troll.

Gravatar molest (from oxford american) - pester or harass someone, typically in an aggressive or persistant manner

like his other frequent inartful statements, it isn't necessarily bias or slander, it's just sloppy verbiage. technically senator kennedy molested judge alito, not alito's wife, but it was she who ran out of the room crying.

i can't support this chris matthews boycott anymore, it's grown increasingly silly. good luck with it.

Gravatar He should just go to Fox already. He has been angling for a job with Murdoch for the past couple of years.

Gravatar Ah, well, you can't leave out misogynism when you are trying to get in the old boy white republican male club. All that is left is the gratuitous black stereotype smear while chortling to complete his membership requirement. I am seriously starting to wonder if he has a serious drinking or drug problem. He really is starting to sound more and more bizzare and mentally distrurbed...I feel sorry for his wife. His contempt for women has been evident for a long time. Sad, really sad.

Gravatar I don't want Tweety to apologize for anything. I just want him to shove off for Fox, where journalism means never having to say you're sorry.
dex

yeah, I like them all in one place where I can child-block the channel, but then he'd go from being and out of touch with reality multi-millionare to a really, really rich fuck with even more time to spend lounging on yachets while he tells us what middle America thinks. I prefer him going on the air and only have to live on his millions where he lazes away his days contemplating how rough it is now that his is a little person like that middle America he knows so much about. Of course, he'll still an out of touch millionare, but he would be a miserable one because he'd think he was middle America. Fox is the way to eternal multimillion dollar bliss for the souless.

Gravatar make that "I prefer him going OFF the air". Stop watching and make him disappear.

Gravatar January 2004 Washingtonian magazine makes fun of Matthews for calling his show "Hardball" and yet calling virtually every guest "a great guy":

Here's a sampling of recent comments Matthews has made to his guests:

After an interview with the RNC chair, Matthews said, "Ed Gillespie, a great guy."

To Arizona senator John McCain: "You're a great guy. Thank you. I love a stalwart."

To obscure Philadelphia-based author Glenn Beck: "This guy is a great guy."

To House Democrat Dick Gephardt: "Dick Gephardt is a great guy, and he is on the show whenever he wants to come on."

To Democratic apologist Lanny Davis: "Lanny Davis, great guy. I wish I had a troop of you guys."

Of California Democratic Party chair Art Torres: "What a great guy he is."

To TV schlock artist Jerry Springer: "I think you are a great guy."

To Republican consultant Ralph Reed: "Ralph, you are a great guy."

To Al Sharpton: "It's more fun having you on than anybody. You were great last night [in the debate]. You're great."

To Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer, who had just authored a book: "We're going to have you back, Bob. Get two for the price of one, two Bob Schieffers, what a great guy."

Of Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak: "Pat Sajak's a great guy."

Of Pennsylvania congressman Jack Murtha, who was supporting new House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi: "There's a great guy standing behind her, Jack Murtha."

To former Ronald Reagan aide Al Haig: "God, you're tough. . . . Former chairman of the Joint Chiefs, former Secretary of State, former everything. Alexander Haig. What a great guy."

Matthews may have paid his ultimate encomium to former senator and presidential candidate Bob Dole: "Long before I got any jobs in Washington, I thought you were the greatest guy in the world, the funniest guy in the world. Even before I knew you were funny, I thought you were a great guy."

And that, in the world of TV, is what they call "Hardball."

Looks like Matthews was too much of an ass-kissing people-pleaser.

.

Gravatar Tweety's MSNBC profile states that he is an "Anchor" and:

A television news anchor with remarkable depth of experience, Matthews has distinguished himself as a broadcast journalist, newspaper bureau chief, Presidential speechwriter, and best-selling author.

In March 2004, he received the David Brinkley Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism.

Gravatar In addition, Matthews worked for 15 years as a print journalist, 13 of them as Washington Bureau Chief for The San Francisco Examiner (1987 - 2000), and two years as a national columnist for The San Francisco Chronicle, which was syndicated to 200 newspapers by United Media.
Matthews spent 15 years in politics and government: he worked in the White House for four years under President Jimmy Carter as a Presidential speechwriter and on the Government Reorganization Project, in the U.S. Senate for five years on the staffs of Senator Frank Moss (Utah) and Senator Edmund Muskie (Maine), and was the top aide for Speaker of the House Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill, Jr. for six years.

Gravatar Tweety is an ass, no doubt, but "Making light of the sexual abuse of women on national TV?"

Gimme a break.
Pushing that line makes YOU sound like an ass too.

The definition of molest includes
"To disturb, interfere with, or annoy."
As in 'TK bothered her'.

Further, even if he DID mean 'sexually molested' (*note the all too common ADJECTIVE qualifier used there) why in the hell would that be "Making light of the sexual abuse of women"???

Are women the only people who are sexually molested?
What about little boys?

Flipping out about assinine non-issues is less than useful.

Gravatar

Flipping out about assinine non-issues is less than useful.

No doubt -- that's exactly what we'd like Chris Matthews to stop doing, on the air, nearly every night. Quiet, sober reporting on the issues would be extremely welcome.

Gravatar This latest post by Matt is counter-productive. We have a right to be mad but much less so about this stuff. Actually, Tweety did better that show. Russert's latest was also better. I agree with "flipping out" anon above.

NOTE FROM JOHN: Counterproductive? You mean it's okay for Chris Matthews to accuse Senator Kennedy of sexually molesting Mrs. Alito? Is that how bad things have gotten, that this is what passes for objective journalism? As for Matthews "getting better" - that's very interesting, since it would only be happening after we launched our campaign.

Edited By Siteowner

Gravatar Ted Kennedy raped Mr. Alito? Now we know who's wiritng his copy -- Lucianne Goldberg.

Get this clown off the air.

NOW!

Gravatar I just called Rick Kaplan's office at MSNBC, left a verbal message with a staffer.

We should all call.

Gravatar I don't understand this one. Who are the "they" with upbeat comments AND showing Kennedy as a molester of Alito's wife. This makes no sense. The way I read that Matthews is saying that someone else is going to portray Kennedy as the molester of Alito's wife, not that Kennedy is.

Of course, I haven't seen this in context and out of context all those non-specific pronouns are a little confusing.

Gravatar The schmuck's a pathetic joke. He embodies everything that's wrong with the Washington punditocracy from head to toe.

But as tempting as it is to say, "Fook him, he's just a joke and who gives a fook", a boycott really is the only thing you can do. One just can't stand by and let the likes of him continue to pull this crap because they'll never change without being threatened with some form of consequences.

Gravatar Matthews is in blatant "make Republicans look good" mode right now. The proof is in his interview last night with Delay and Delay's Demcratic challenger. The questions to Delay were pathetically softball and said with politeness and reassurance. The questions to the Democratic challenger were hostile and judgemental. What a tool.

Gravatar Whatever font of dirty water Ann Coulter is drinking from, is the same one Tweety is drinking from.

Joking aside, I'm really beginning to wonder if Matthews has some sort of disease or condition that has affected his brain?

He's becoming more and more bizarre and irrational of late and his remarks -- even by rightwingnuttia standards, are just off the wall.
.

Gravatar to paraphrase lewis carrol, i always try to spew forth at least six bloviations every day before breakfast...

Gravatar Ok, Tweety. Now you've gotten weird. I just flush my bottle of Bayer low-dose; think I'll go buy a bottle of St. Joe's now. The rest of Tweety's sponsors can expect something similar.

Pervert indeed! You're a jackass, Chris. Ms. Oscar was boo-hooing when Graham was softballing little Sammy.

Gravatar Ah, come on, Matthews is probably just defensive because of the rumors he has intercourse with barnyard animals.

Gravatar The "molestation" comment can be taken both ways and it was an intentional use on his part. Anybody that uses that language knows the image that it's going to create. And technically, it was Orrin Hatch of Utah (R) that caused Alito's wife to leave the room crying... so why is a Democrat mentioned at all by Matthews? Perhaps it would have been more accurate to state that a republican molested that woman? (re-read his quote) Once again, another example of modern journalism in action.

Gravatar Mr. Matthews seems to be in the "I'll show you liberals, I'll hurt me" mode. His stubbornness will eventually be his downfall. It won't be long and he will be seen as nothing more than another republi-con rabble rouser.

Gravatar Oops, I actually meant to say "Lindsey Graham of South Carolina (R)", not "Orrin Hatch" above. My bad, but then I'm no newscaster

Gravatar How did Ted Kennedy "molest" Mrs. Alito? I dont remember him asking her any questions or talking to her at all? This is nothing but mathews playing the Right wing propaganda game leading up to the State of the Union. he should be ashamed.

Confirmation hearings are where tough questions are asked. Alito put CAP on his resume so why should anyone be surprised when he is asked about it? And suddenly he can't remember it when it's suddenly a liability? Bullshit. And his wife runs out of the room crying when Lindsay Graham is talking, not Ted Kennedy. Can you say STAGED?

Gravatar And his wife runs out of the room crying when Lindsay Graham is talking, not Ted Kennedy. Can you say STAGED?
---
I thought it was highly staged to. It is a technique the republicans have used many times in the past to gain support for whatever sleazeball politician they are pushing on us. And then whenever a democrat is in office, they mercilessly attack the wife or female politician as some kind of monster feminist that will take over the world and make you put the toilet seat down if you don't vote republican. Then they all sit around with crocodile tears sadly telling us how meany democrats made the poor sensitive repub wife cry. Oh, the horror of it. Next day, they are out with the machete again psychotically hacking away at some democratic female. Which brings us back to a Chris Matthewsesk show scenerio. We could writers for his show. Segment #1 Matthews is horrified at the evil democrats who made Alito's wifeypoo cry. Commercial break. Segment #2..Hillary Clinton, the feminazi, will take over the world. Be afraid, be very afraid. She is a liberal just like Osama Bin Laden (uh, wait that can't be right, can it? I thought he was a fundamentalist islamic terrorist. Oh well, don't let facts get in the way of a great smear.)

Gravatar I can't believe only one other person here understood that Chris was describing the attack he EXPECTED to be made on TK. He wasn't making the charge himself. Go back and re-read the quote. If you still don't get it, either your comprehension of the english language is pathetic or you hate the guy so much you will distort reality to justify your feelings.

NOTE FROM JOHN: Yes, the same way he simply DESCRIBE the fag joke that Michael Savage said. Chris wasn't really telling the fag joke, he was just recounting somebody's else's fag joke. I suppose it would be okay for him to describe other people's n-word jokes too, eh?

Gravatar Do we know what MSNBC's policy is on its employees receiving any outside monies/fees/etc?

Can we get this policy in writing so when Matthews is exposed, their hands are tied.

For that matter, we should try to get these policies from all major news organizations (except Fox, b/c frankly, who cares?)

Gravatar There should be a book out now that condemns the direction the media has taken and hopefully piss off the corporate side of it.

Gravatar Just picked up my tax software for 2005. For the past 7 years I've used TurboTax exclusively. This year I bought TaxCut because of TurboTax's desire to support mis-infromative shows like Hardball.

Gravatar What is it that liberal thinkers always say when conservatives complain about inappropriate material on t.v.?
They invariably say, "If you don't like it, change the channel."
I find it rather odd and more than a little amusing that you now refuse to take your own advice. If Matthews is too far to the right for you (I wouldn't know...I don't watch him), then find something else. There are plenty of left-leaning news broadcasts you can check out.
And before someone retorts that Matthews should be held to a higher standard because he purports to be a journalist, let me point out that so did Dan Rather and Peter Jennings, who were every bit to the left as Matthews is to the right, and with much bigger audiences.

Gravatar I said it before and I think it bears repeating; when the guy at the top -- in this case George Bush, supports a Constitutional amendment to make gay marriage illegal in all 50 states, the homophobes, be they Matthews, Savage or Perkins, feel empowered to sign-on to the attacks.

Today, we see the true face of Chris Matthews and it isn't pretty.

From gays to Hispanics to liberals, Chris Matthews is using Hardball to attack everyone.
.

Gravatar My earlier point is that it is clear to me that Chris Matthews is trying to protect someone or something. The natural and most obvious assumption:

Someone = Chris Matthews
Something = Career/Income

If Abramoff was really managing a slush fund as many suggest, does anyone think he would stop after scoring the two heavyweights (sarcasm), Doug Bandow & Peter Ferrara?

FACT: Matthews was an "acquaintance" of Abramoff

FACT: Matthew helped Abramoff raise money on at least one occasion

Before he gets caught, I think we need to ask MSNBC to state their policy covering their employees and the receipt of any outside payment (of any kind).

After we get the policies, then, let's play Hardball with this guy and find out if he was paid, he'd have to report it on his taxes, wouldn't he? how else can find out?

Gravatar Steve,

Dan Rather and Peter Jennings didn't come out and say people who don't like the prez are "whack-jobs" and talk about Senators molesting the wives of Supreme Court nominees and make "fudge packing" jokes. They were professinal journalists even if their bent was left. Chris Matthews needs to rename his show the Matthews Factor and move it to Fox. It has lost all pretense of being trusted, journalistic television.

Gravatar What a fascist hack Mathews has become. Corporate swine!

Gravatar I myself have not picked up my tax software. I could have been a 2 for switching both Money and Taxcut over to Intuit's package. But this is going to be the deciding factor. Its a shame to let money spent on advirtising actually hurt sales...

Gravatar I called rick Kaplan's office today only to be told I was IRRELEVENT.Perhaps if MSNBC finds it's viewers IRRELEVENT it will find itself IRRELEVENT also.....I guess it will be necessary to play hardball

Gravatar Olbermann needs to move to a different network. Then I wouldn't have to subject my new HDTV to MSNBC. Even if it is for only 1 hour a night.

Gravatar HArdball is a right wing show? Just shows how out of touch you latte sipping, homosexual loving, anti military at all costs left wing loons are. But keep up the good work, your voice is being heard

Gravatar I agree Shannon, and would argue that that's exactly why Matthews isn't worth the trouble. He's editorializing, and if he's as over the top as you claim he is, he's only playing to those who already share his opinions. As you said, his show has "lost all pretense of being trusted, journalistic television." He's unable to influence anyone's opinions in the subtle but effective ways that Rather and Jennings were. Or if he is able to influence others, do you really care what someone dumb enough to buy into that kind of sensationalism thinks? (I've never seen his show, so I'm trusting that you've accuratly represented his program here). Again, if you don't like his show, change the channel. It really is that simple.

On another note, I'm confused about your comment to the effect that Matthews should rename and relocate his show. I thought this blog was about trying to get him cancelled altogether. Why do you care what channel he's on or what the name of his show is?

Gravatar My God, if you don't like the show, turn it off. I've never seen a bigger bunch of whiners. Get a life, a job, or whatever it is you need (I know, I know, you want "social justice" LOL!).

Gravatar Seriously, look up the word 'molest' in the dictionary, it doesn't just mean what your twisted little minds think it does. "to annoy, disturb, or persecute"

Jesus, he was a speechwriter for Carter, you fanatics are just getting laughable.

Gravatar Craig | 01.31.06 - 1:22 pm -- above, is the only one who seems to have read the actual quote. Chris was describing what he expected Republicans to portray about the Alito hearings. In other words, what all of you are accusing him of doing he was merely predicting the Reps would do in the SOU speech. Which means on that subject Matthews was on YOUR SIDE.

Don't let the facts stop you though. This whole site is based on the fact that Matthews said that Osoma's speech read like a Mike Moore speech. And, uh, it did. Which isn't to say that Moore is "like Osoma." He isn't, and Matthews didn't say he was. He was repeating what everyone knew -- Osoma was reading and playing back the opposition voice in this country in his tape. Which is good PR. If I wanted to oppose the power in another country, I would try to sound like the biggest opposition voice when I made my propoganda tapes, too. That way you appeal to a large mass.

But, hey, those pesky facts again.

I'm convinced that this site is really some right-wing satire site.

Gravatar "I'm convinced that this site is really some right-wing satire site."

It sure is, even if by accident. Maybe Karl Rove put it up

Gravatar Chris Matthews has devolved into a strange, sad person. Anyone else notice how this right-wing wacko laughs off (literally) everything bad that conservatives do? His show has become a pathetic shill for the right-wing nuts, and by the way, like Russert, note how yet ANOTHER republican in the media will not let their son or daughter serve in the U.S. military. CHICKENHAWK IN VIETNAM, AND STILL A CHICKENHAWK A GENERATION LATER!

Gravatar There was an ad while I was watching Olbermann. Chris Matthews was saying that he promised that he would tell the truth and ask the right questions.

Nice going Chrissie. Nice way to respond to us. You can do better than that, you right-wing hack.

Gravatar I no longer watch Hardball, but this comment is so bothersome, that I will no longer buy products from his advertisers.

Gravatar I started watching Chris a few years back when he was typically entertaining and sometimes witty. But lately (maybe trying too hard to copy O'Reilly's presumed success?), his retoric has gotten downright laughable, if not weird.

Is he blindly chasing ratings, hitting the bottle a little to hard...or maybe smoking the wrong kind of rope?

Gravatar I'm no fan of Matthews, and agree with some criticisms.

But based on the quoted text I see this attack as dishonest - and therefore helping Matthews, undermining other attacks.

The attack excludes the phrase at the end of his sentence about saying that this is how the White House will 'play' the Alito nomination. He didn't make the attack, he said the White House might, as I read it.

And second, this site adding the word 'sexual' to molest is a lie too. Yes, the first definition that would come to mind is sexual, but you have to look at context, and the context that there has been ZERO suggestion anywhere of a sexual molestation by Kennedy, and that there is ZERO about the molestation being sexual anywhere else by Matthews, shows that the only legitimate criticism could be a poor choice of words - that claiming he made an attack of SEXUAL activity is simply a lie, in my opinion.

If you want to help Matthews - and I hope you don't - keep this up.

Gravatar Chris Matthews is MY HERO!

Here's why...

• Chris Matthews once roundhouse kicked someone so hard that his foot broke the speed of light, went back in time, and killed Amelia Earhart while she was flying over the Pacific Ocean.
• Crop circles are Chris Matthews' way of telling the world that sometimes corn needs to lie the fuck down.
• Chris Matthews is ten feet tall, weighs two-tons, breathes fire, and could eat a hammer and take a shotgun blast standing.
• The Great Wall of China was originally created to keep Chris Matthews out. It failed miserably.
• Most people have 23 pairs of chromosomes. Chris Matthews has 72... and they're all poisonous.
• If you ask Chris Matthews what time it is, he always says, "Two seconds 'til." After you ask, "Two seconds 'til what?" he roundhouse kicks you in the face.
• Chris Matthews drives an ice cream truck covered in human skulls.

Gravatar It wouldn't be the first time Kennedy has molested someone.

Gravatar Sorry I work at Office Depot, drive a Toyota and have Verizon wireless!

But I did stop watching Matthews and MSNBC-only watch CNN!

Gravatar Matthews should go to fox where everyone knows that 'liberal and democrat' are dirty words. We have no real free press in the mainstream media these days, since corporate American runs them and has a vested interest in keeping someone like Bush in office.

We need the corporate influence removed, break the ownerships up and keep them out of Public TV.

I once heard an anchor on Fox News virtually suggest that perhaps the media in China had a better system, since controlling the media completely gave them a better 'international image'. Before 9/11 no one in America could have gotten away with that kind of a remark. In order to make our Democracy safe we apparently are being asked by Fox news to destroy it.

For this reason, 'boycotting' Matthews and others are significant actions.

Bush is getting away with illegal acts, and there is no press to call him on it.

And to make jest of something as serious as sexual abuse, well....I've never heard even O'Reilly accused of being that insensitive, cruel and crude.

So however small a thing it may seem to be to boycott Matthews, in the overall picture, it is not a small thing at all.
