Gravatar Striclly speaking, and this is very important, Christian Zionism is not a modern theological and political movement.

It was developed concurrently in Britain with Jewish Zionism in the 18th and 19th century and it was first popularized by John Nelson Darby around 1840. It was brought to the US by Blackstone and Scofield.

The early version of Christian eschatology held that Jesus would return and establish his millennial kingdom after the world had been evangelized. However, by the 18th century another model of eschatology emerged in England that emphasized the role of a reconstituted Israel in the end times.

This is a fraudulent theology created for the purposes that it is now being put to use.

From a historical point of view, it is quite ingenious if you think about it. A theology not just designed to neutralize a traditional enemy but to turn them into allies.

The Christians United For Israel (CUFI) was launched at the beginning of this year with the stated goal of becoming a "Christian AIPAC" and they are well on their way.

The best research that I have seen on this theology and it's history is from Donald E. Wagner who teaches at North Park University in Chicago. He is the author of Anxious for Armageddon (1995) and Dying in the Land of Promise: Palestine and Palestinian Christianity from Pentecost to 2000, (revised edition, 2003).

He also has numerous articles all of which are worth the read.
