On a personal note, villages and towns in Eastern European where my ancestors came from, along with distant members of my family, were burnt to the ground in WWII. The only ethical lesson to learn from this is "never again". Not never again to the Jewish people, but never again to any people.

During my childhood I spent some time in the Soviet block and I visited these "Konzentrationslager" (concentration camps) in Dachau and Treblinka. I can tell you that I could even smell the burnt flesh from these camps 40 years later after WWII.

Gravatar Molly this is an awesome post, thank you for writing it. I'd like to add though that yes it is damaging to the Palestinian cause to deny the holocaust but it is also damaging to all of mankind for anyone to deny it. The thing that irks me about Israeli lobby groups that say that the holocaust needs to be taught to children in schools, etc., is that they seem to only teach about the holocaust in order to bolster Israel politically. They could have taught about it in a way that might have helped draw attention to Rwanda and prevent the mass slaughter that happened there or even taught about holocaust in a way that could have ended the sanctions in Iraq that killed millions of children. I think everyone should be talking about the holocaust and pointing out all the mini holocausts that are happening still today.

Gravatar Exactly, CS, Norman Finkelstein points this out.

Gravatar Good job Molly.

sista nails it bang on!

The reason why Holocaust denial appears to be such a crime is because it is a startlingly awesome concept to be confronted with after such a longtime acceptance as fact. Especially when the acceptance is backed up with so much fact. To say that the outrcy from Jews is a Zionist conspiracy to discredit information brought forth to the contrary is simply paranoia and schizophrenic ....Put yourself in their place for crying out loud
