A map of the battles in beirut:

Das+Kriege.JPG
Hezbollah and Amal have occupied most of west beirut, and surrounded PSP and FM. The army is posted along the green line, separating east and west beirut.

A couple of questions: who drew this map and when?

The map was drawn by the author of this blog (who is not sympathetic to the opposition):
http://jehasnail.blogspot.com/
My sources in Beirut think that the fighting is pretty much over. The opposition overwhelmed the FM and M14 militias. And is slowly handing back control to the army. And Saniora might resign tonight. A little bit of gunfire still heard now and again.
But let's see what kind of political arrangement is reached. That's what I'm curious about. Anyone have any insights?

From Tony:
I can't post during the day. However, there is a good article by Franklin Lamb in Beirut in Counterpunch:
http://www.counterpunch.org/
lamb...mb05092008.html
"......This observer was amazed to see and learn that Hezbollah/Amal also are deployed all over Mt. Lebanon. Approaching a Druze area, near the Kamal Jumblatt Hospital in Choufeit close to 1 p.m. today I turned down a side road to make a telephone call at one of the phone shops. I was shocked to see approximately 80 heavily armed fighters. "Oh”, I thought to myself, “finally I see Jumblatt's militia." As I pulled up to the phone store several fighters approached my motorcycle—which is well known in Dahiyeh. "Habibee!", one young man called as he put his free arm around me. Turns out he is a neighbor of mine from Harek Hreik. "What are you doing here with PSP (Druze militia?)", I lamely ask. "No, no, we are all Hezbollah and Amal here!
How is that possible in Jumblatt territory? "Khalas, there is no Jumblatt territory! We and our friends are all throughout the mountains. We are ready to fight both the Zionists and anyone else who wants to fight us....."
I will post it this evening.

The same angry arab said:
"Hizbullah chose the worst time to press the government:they could have toppled the Sanyurah government during or shortly after the Israeli war on Lebanon."
Therefor the Prof. in political shit was surprised to see the "Doctrine running for its life on the streets of Beirut."
like our angry palestinian pundit having a proplem with Hamas, the angry arab have a problem with Hizbullah. "Hizbullah is not politically effective as it has been militarily in 2006" The Hamas "Habeelas" are smarter than Hizbullah.

Angry Arab makes me laugh sometimes. He is funny. But I do not necessarily agree with many of his views. Anyway, he is kind of an heterodox that worths reading and knows volumes of Lebanon politics.
His comment above is spot on. Here goes the Bush doctrine on may 2008, running for its life on the streets of Beirut!
Or as you would say, the magic turning on the magician.

"Hizbullah chose the worst time to press the government"
It is the govenment who chose the time, and miss-calculated Hizbullah reaction, but Hizbullah was ready, and was preparing for this little battle since Aug 2006.
They wanted to push the lebanese army into a new nahr elbared, and blame Iran and Syria, and pave the way for Bush to claim that Iran, not Israel is the Arab's Enemy.
I said maby times here that as long as the US is traped in iraq, everbody is safe.
Since the Iraq was invaded the daily question was: Who is next??
My permananent answer was: The USreal shall never dare to attack neither Iran nor Syria, as long as Hizbullah is Armed.
Israel tried and failed, and they thought, a civil war shall at least neutralize Hizbullah, and justify attacking Iran and Syria.

Just out of curiosity, why did they try to shut down the telecommunications network? It was a known quantity, there were other alternatives.

Yes, I agree with you and not with Angry Arab on this issue. Going after the government right after the war --and the wantom destruction the zionists brought upon Lebanon-- would be a gross mistake. Besides, it was not Hizbolla's aim to topple the government, hence they did not do it now either. They simply want the last decisions reversed, (correctly termed by Nashrallah as a declaration of war on the resistance), and dialogue so that a way-out of the current stalemate is found. Enough with 17 (or was it 19?) failed attempts at designing a President. No one can say that Hizbollah had not shown loads of patience, precisely to avoid bloodshed.
And right on when you say it was not Hizbollah's, but the puppet's choice of the time. Actually Hizbollah was forced, pushed into this situation, to which could only respond the way it did, since it was a matter of pure survival. So, the "government" (i.e., their ziocon paymasters) miscalculated. For the good of Lebanon, as general Aoun said.
Let's hope Hizbullah and the rest of the opposition will prevail through the difficult times ahead, because what is clear is the ziocons and their stooges will hit back hard with all possible means, and this includes anything. Think of the worst case scenarios, for this is what they will try.

Is Abu Faswa offering us his political "analysis"? It's almost as funny as his Islamic theology lectures.
Wala Abu Faswa you say "as long as the US is trapped in Iraq". Who trapped them in Iraq? Not the Iraqi Phalange. They are also trapped in the Green Zone hiding under a blanket of security and safety provided by the "great satans" army. Iran and Syria both should thank the Iraqi National Resistance for protecting them.
How is Ahmadinajad doing? Has he reached al-quds? Any fiery pro-Palestine faswas from him recently?
Is Hizballah going to support the Iraqis when they liberate the green zone and get rid of the Iraqi phalange? And the Siniora, Jumblat, and JaJa of Iraq ?
Consistent application of principles and standards is the only barometer to judge by.

"MR. JOHNDROE: The United States has provided quite a bit of assistance to the government of Lebanon and the Lebanese armed forces, whether it's money, materiel, or advice over the last couple of years. And I think we will continue to do that. As I said, the Secretary of State is reaching out to the government of Lebanon, and we are always willing to see whatever their needs may be and work with them. It's a democratically elected government; we want to help them succeed because it's the right thing to do for the people of Lebanon and the people of the region."
