Ok, Hackett definitley has a better chance than I thought...I don't really think he'd be able to survive past 2006 though...

2006 will be a high-turnout election, 2nd district breaks down roughly as follows in my head:

50% Republican
20% Independent-leaning R
30% Democrats

If Schmidt loses R's will run a Deters or Munoz and get all 50% plus much of the 20%...

However I am putting this race at 50/50 because i am unsure of how well the GOP base will turnout for Schmidt while I think the Dems will for Hackett.

Gravatar Yow!

Gravatar Anyone have a copy of these radio ads or a script for them? It'd be really great to know what they say.

Gravatar Who are these COAST people. Do they have any members, or any authority?

Gravatar I hate to say "I told you so"...oh, who am I kidding, I love to say it!

Everyone was so sure Pat DeWine would run away with Republican nominatino because of all his money...and what did I say, NO WAY!

And everyone was so sure Hackett would get his butt kicked in this general...and while he may not be able to overcome the obvious gerrymandering bias...as promised, this race has become a lot closer than most (me excluded of course) anticipated.

If only I could predict lottery numbers...

Gravatar COAST is Chris Finney (complete asshole) and Tom Brinkman (very close second). It kills me that they would screw their party just because they feel like it. I would love to see the national party smack them down.

Gravatar Yeah, especially since R's now seem to be the tax and spend party. Maybe COAST should start endorsing the fiscally responsible D's.

Gravatar Though I agree with their conclusions to cast a vote for neither Schmidt nor Hackett, I wish they'd at least encourage people to show up to the polls anyways. Even if they cast a write-in vote or just leave the ballot blank, people should always go the polls.

I'm still deciding whether to cast a write-in vote for a real person, or whether to go with Jason Vorhees or Freddy Kruger.

Gravatar $ 183,766,207,815.00. That what the cost of the Iraq war is so far. ( http://www.nationalpriorities.or...fwar/ index.html ) $7,000,000,000.00 is Ohio's share.
$185,000,000.00 is Cincinnati's share.
What we need now is another tax cut for the wealthy. Send Schmidt to congress and she'll make sure Bush's tax cuts become permanent. As far as raising the cap in Social Security, that doesn't affect me, I make less than $90,000 a year. In fact if I made $90,000 a year and my wife made $90,000 a year our social security tax wouldn't go up a single dime if the cap was raised. Believe what you want but take a look around. The middle class is disappearing replaced by low paying jobs. Republicians are largely responsible for that change.

Gravatar Go, Anon, go!

My fear is, this being a special election (the tend to have a low turnout), Republicans are going to get their foot soldiers (aka the Goon Squad) out in full force. Schmidt is a disaster but Dems may be swimming upstream on this election.

Gravatar Sometimes you have to swim upstream... You keep swimming Paul Hackett... I'll see you at the calm!

Peter Deane

P.S. Don't worry... I'm behind you 100%!

Gravatar Well besides the fact that that number is billions of dollars off I think most of the voters in the 2nd district would hope she would make the tax cuts permanent.

Howlin',

Who are these goons and what are they actually going to do?

Gravatar Anon,

The middle class was shrinking before the republican takeover. I think both parties are led by the nose of greedy weasles to screw everyone over. The dem's are no better than republicans and often times worse.

Gravatar just found your blog, and I have to say this post just made my night. keep up the great work! Jen in Cincy

Gravatar Just heard Schmidt say "I have heard my opponent (Hackett) say several times that our president is more dangerous that Osama Bin Laden"--or something like that. Sounds like a classic Rove statement to me--Hackett, reporters, need to hold her feet to the fire on this statement--and don't let her get away with that BS.

Gravatar I love Hackett and how he has served this nation honorable, but will not be voting for him as a vote for him is a vote for Nancy Polaski.

The 3 votes in this household will be going to Jean Schmidt

Gravatar I can't stand Schmidt and think the GOP nbeed a wake-up call. My wife and I will both be voting for Hackett (and we disagree with the majority of his positions)

Gravatar can't vote, but wish i could. will be heading down tomorrow to help with the hackett effort however. progressives taking ohio one election at a time...

Gravatar It's time we send someone to Congress to tell Bush to quit spending our money for the bennifit of corporations like Haliburton. What has the common guy gained from the Iraq war? Bush lied and soldiers died. We can send a message to GWB that we are fed up with the status quo and he better change his tune before the whole lot of them get sent packing.

Gravatar It's sorta funny that both parties are putting so much money into a seat that is up for grabs in another year.

Of course, you could look at it this way:

Dems: it's now or never
Repubs: we can NOT lose this seat.

Gravatar This election will let the rest of the world see if the 2nd District, along with the rest of the Country watching are happy with the direction Bush has taken us. Hopefully common sense will prevail and a new direction will start taking shape. I am a Republican but I can see a con job a mile away. Hell Schmidt can't even use her own talking points and is affixed on the same successful GOP talking points from the last election. If she hires the Swifty's, she might be able to convince the electorate, Hackett didn't go to Iraq and lied about his service.
