log cabin republlicans remind me of the Chappelle skit where he's a blind black KKK member. the two are so opposed, that comedic irony ensues.
anyone notice how they railroaded a very in the closet David Dreier out of the leadership post? Can't be havin gays in their leadership, that's for sure.

I've met a fair amount of Log Republicans (in addition to a few gay conservative friends) and had a couple beers with their director, Patrick Guerriero. He's is an amazing guy. I really feel sorry for the LCRs as they are often so Republican on every issue except gay marriage, and it must be painful to deal with or even to choose who to vote for.
However, they must continue to work inside their party if they want it to change...leaving the party as Brian would prefer does nothing constructive. You would be surprised who showed up at the LCR party at the Republican National Convention...some very big national names, more than one of which is considered a solid presidential candidate in 2008.

Your assertion that Councilmember Monzel hates gays is way off base. And I love how inaccurately you have portrayed Article XII. That being said, the people spoke last year, and Article XII was repealed.
Councilmember Monzel has always been respectful of others, even if they do not agree with his point of view. It is unfortunate that the citizens of the city put more into show than they do into substance - if they took the time to learn more about some of the candidates and council members, they would find that there are some that truly have a love for the city, and really desire to perform their public service, rather than just lusting after a council seat for money or publicity.

Many people say no because the local government does not have the authority to proclaim sexual preference as a protected class, which the repeal of Article XII did.
Only the federal government can establish a protected class.
Article XII did not enumerate or allow discrimination. Please see the XIV Amendment to the Constitution.

Respectful or not, Monzel is a whimp, but he only has about 60 days left on council. Wonder if his staff is looking for jobs?

What exactly are Gay rights? Are there rights for other gorups as well. Are there Stetson Wearer rights? How about Chevy Drivers rights? Or Bifocal users rights?
You confuse me because you speak of Gay rights, but your last sentence speaks of "granting gays equal rights under the law". Well, just to inform you, gays, like everybody else, do have equal rights under the law. Which begs the first question I have, What exactly are gay rights?

JOE, are Stetson-wearers not allowed to marry? Are Chevy-drivers denied employment on the basis of their automotive preferences? Do Bifocal-wearers get harassed and beaten because of their specs?
Groups who are discriminated against require special protections against that discrimination. Gay rights are assurances that a persons' sexual orientation will not result in their being denied the rights to live and work where they want, and enjoy the same freedom to marry as heterosexuals.

What about Ovine Rights? I'm sure there are many sheepherders out there that would love to marry one of their flock! What about Male Rights? Do men have the right to walk into a Ladies' Restroom whenever they want? Why aren't all restrooms and shower facilities Unisex? Can a man be a member of the Congressional Women's Caucus? What about White Male Rights? Can a white male get equal treatment for a job opportunity under Affirmative Action? What about Euro-American Rights? Can a white male or female be a member of the Congressional Black Caucus?

I came across this the other day. Jesus said:
"Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man."
So the more Christians hate gays, the more Jesus loves gays.
Ironic isn't it. :-D

Myth number 1 - Gays are discriminated against. The preponderance of this myth is exceeded only by Myth #2 - That if you don't believe Myth #1 then you hate gays.
There is always something comforting when you can invent enemies and thereby become a victim. Quit whining already and move on. As a heterosexual, trust me, we just don't give a crap what you do with your life. The gays need to get over themselves and stop believing in myths.

JOE, As a heterosexual myself, I've got no reason to "invent enemies" for gays. They are unquestionably discriminated against. CAN THEY MARRY? In typical right-wing fashion, you're denying the existance of a problem you don't want to address. I'll bet you think racism is a myth too.

Joe...
How do you drive with your head so far up your ass?
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was confronted with the same rhetoric by its opponents: Equal Rights, not Special Rights.
Are you going to tell me that black people now have special rights? Or are you going to tell me that the act was unnecessary?
Its so convenient from your proximity to pass judgement on the oppressed as to their rights, lack of, or your genius perception about them.
Hate to tell you this, bud, but your really don't know shit and you constantly talk out of your ass.
Scratch that; Since this is where your head is located, it only makes sense you talk out of your ass. However, whether you know shit because of this is debatable.

"Are you going to tell me that black people now have special rights?"
Ever hear of Affirmative Action? Is there a government required minimum for the number of white students a so-called Black College like Grambling has to accept each year? What was med school admissions like before Grutter vs Bollinger? I asked before, how many white members are there in the Congressional Black Caucus? Is there a Congressional White Caucus? If not, what kind of Holy Hell would be raised if they wanted to create one?

Do the Log Cabin Republicans kind of resemble Democrats who see themselves as pro-life when the Democratic Party is pro-murder of the innocent in the womb in any way shape or form? I guess some folks see the issues as more than single issue choices.
The real issue seems to be that some folks are more tied to an R or D than to the actual candidates position. I remeber believing that the Democrats were for the little guy and African Americans until I woke up one day to see that most of them take donations from the big guys and really do not seem to care about African Americans until the voting season. I remeber thinking that the Republicans were for conservative spending and small government until I watched them in action over the last few years. That is why I now have an "I" in my registration and look at the candidate. I think we should all begin to vote the old fashioned way and make the EARN IT.

Brian, Brian, Brian. Why do you have to fall into these same traps time after time? Just because someone opposes something (like a certain behavior), that doesn't mean they "hate" it or the person doing it. Everytime I think you are turning into a reasonable sage, you pull something like this. I'm very disappointed. Can you say DEMOGOGUE? I guess you HATE Bronson because you disagree with him all the time. And you must HATE Republicans too...right?
By the way, since when can ANYONE marry the whomever or whatever they choose? I can't marry my sister, my best friends wife, or even my pickup. Do I get equal rights claims for them too?
And let's not fall into the Black people trap either. Met any ex-blacks? There are ex-gays out there. Gays have never been, and likely never will be discriminated against like Blacks have been.

"Is there a Congressional White Caucus? If not, what kind of Holy Hell would be raised if they wanted to create one?"
Ask yourself this question: Who is in the majority in this country, and who controls the money and power? Who is a minority?
There is a Congressional White Caucus...it's called CONGRESS. To suggest that the majority needs some kind of special protection from minorities is at best absurd and at worst smacks of National Socialism.

louisms - I see no evidence that gays are widely discriminated against. You ask 'CAN THEY MARRY?' The answer, of course, is Yes. Any gay person can marry a person of the opposite sex. They have the exact same rights I do. But even aside from the red herring of gay marriage, there is scant evidence that gays are discriminated against in any manner.

Hi Wiz
I hope things are well with you and that one of those bulging veins in your neck doesn't pop. High blood pressure is not a good thing - I suggest you get it checked.
With regard to your equivocating the issue of gay rights to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the notion is laughable, were it no so insulting to the people that actually HAVE been discriminated against.
But you inadvertantly bring up a valid point (the blind squirrel gets a nut so to speak). The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was landmark legislation. Yet one cannot read a newspaper or turn on the TV without hearing about the plague of racism and inequality in our country. The haunting inages of New Orleans brought this to the forefront. So what happened? Why, when this Act is 40 years old do we have these lingering problems, by many accounts far worse than they were in the 60's? Did the legislation fail? What about the accompanying billions spent on LBJ's Great Society? I thought we eradicated poverty in this country? What happened Wiz?
Think about it for a change. There's a point here and you can learn from it. But you have to give it a little thought. You can do it Wiz.

Wiz,
that's what we independents really like about you Democrats. You claim tolerance and then show your true intolerance. Why is it you have to resort to name-calling and insults to try to make your point? That's just as bad as Brian's dubious claim that the words oppose and hate have the same meaning.

Without the name calling, there have been some good points made about this issue. One that has not been made yet, however, is how Blacks and those who call themselves gay have been somehow lumped into one big group. Thank Eleanor Roosevelt for that one. Although FDR was not really for Blacks, his wife kept this issue out in front, at the same time building support for gays as well. Before the Depression, Blacks voted Republican, particularly after the Civil War, through Reconstruction, all the way up to the Depression. It was during this era that the Democrats began to court Blacks more. Do you think that it was coincidence that Stonewall occurred during the same time period as the Civil Rights Act? Now, what do we get as a result of these "advances?" We get democratic candidates that court the churches every two years, because they assume that because there is a "D" behind their names, that they deserve the Black vote. And, most of the time, we oblige. It is time that Blacks stop feeding the hand that bites us, and start becoming more educated about the candidates and the issues.

Stonewall "occurred" because some gays got tired of being harassed by cops. If it's a "coincidence" then take it up with New York's finest.

John Galt - AMEN on old Bayard - unfortunately, blacks in the civil rights movement ostracized him even though he was the principal architect of the 1963 MOW...a sad testimony, but also a sign of the times. Okay, so he had a few arrests for backseat dalliances...
Yes, A Black Republican, you are correct on the dems issue, though. They used blacks to corral their power and then failed to deliver on so many important issues...i.e. education. But, the Republicans of yesteryear aren't necessarily the Republicans of today and the same holds true for dems.
What really is, in my opinion, at issue is the failure of both parties to actually commit to a substantive, societal realignment of resources such that all people have the necessary rights and freedoms to pursue their lives unabated. We also have a lot of shit that remains unacknowledged and undealt with - i.e. 400 years of economic power on the backs of black folks in which America still fails to atone itself for.
Moreover, the hatred for the working class of this country by the party elites is manifested in the fact that whites, blacks and hispanics of this country who break their backs in hard labor everyday are ignored and told if they work hard enough, go to school long enough, kiss the right ass just enough they too might enjoy the same privileges afforded to them. Of course it's all a ruse. And, it's the good ol' (or bad ol') race-class dichotomy.
In my mind, neither party and few of the candidates truly give a damn about the core of this country (Barak Obama and Barbara Lee seem to be the only principled players on the scene). They pander and pander...but that's to be expected out of politicians who cater to an electorate with the interest and attention span of a donut.
