Cincinnati Blog

Winburn, Malone and Garry have all told reporters that they are running. Minette Cooper also is thinking about running.

I've heard completely unfounded rumors that Cole and Cranley could take positions in Columbus. I'm repeating these completely unfounded rumors.

Is Nick not running?

I'd be surprised to see Cranley back.

Here's your next Council:

Jeff Berding
Chris Bortz
Laketa Cole
Minette Cooper
John Cranley
David Crowley
Leslie Ghiz
Greg Harris
Chris Monzel

I agree with above 8, but think Lynch or Thomas takes the 9th slot (not Monzel).

I don't think Malone or Monzel can win. But I think Windburn can break top 9 because lots of black dem's will vote for him. I don't thin Berding will get the Dem endorsement, and he can't win as a Republican.

Here's my pick, in order of votes:

John Cranley
Laketa Cole
Minette Cooper
Leslie Ghiz
David Crowley
Charlie Windburn
Greg Harris
Chris Bortz
Cecil Thomas

Alicia Reece is running again.

Why would Alicia run? She's been absent since she lost the mayoral primary. If she wanted to get re-elected, she should active in the city by doing something useful. I think she's just always trying to find a better gig. I think she really expects to be appointed to some high office. As if she deserves it.
She's definitely someone who can't do anything but talk the talk!!!

Berding and Cole just sold out their constituencies--regardless of your feelings about their budget, their constituents will feel betrayed.

Samantha Herd

I think Alicia Reece's star faded after her disasterous run for mayor. Besides, shouldn't she be running for Council where she lives, in Green Township?

Cranley will be in C-Bus. I bet Sam Luken gets appointed.

Berding won't get the endorsement? I really doubt that.

It'd be sad if Sam Luken gets appointed . . . a young kid with zero accomplishments gets in simply because his last name. The other Sam (Herd) proved herself to be an ineffective and lazy campaigner.

Good. She could stand to loose a few pounds.

Gravatar Alicia could loose a few, HAHA! She likes to box remember!

Harris has name recognition around town, he is experienced in public policy. I would hope Cincinnatians would elect him over Luken.

Gravatar Another Luken? How many are there? Is there a breeding farm somewhere?

Gravatar Um downtowner, while I share your sentiments, it's not like Harris' name recognition is on par with a Luken. But Harris wouldn't be running against Luken anyway.

Gravatar If that's the best our pols can come up with,it truly is time to abandon the city. Will the last normal person out please shoot out the lights?

Gravatar I have no idea who will run nor do I have any idea why someone would want to be me.

Gravatar I'm running.

Gravatar Alicia is running because she needs the money

Gravatar Is Integrity Hall still open over on Seymore? We drove by it on New Years Eve and it looked closed, as in out of business.

I think it's easy to be dismissive, but actually don't think a lot of people on Brian's list are so bad. This really hasn't been a bad Council, and despite the bad press around budget deliberations, it was actually an important debate.

My ideal, well-balanced Council of this group would be:

Jeff Berding: brings moderate, business-like perspective

Chris Bortz: good government type; pro-econ dev

John Cranley: Harvard trained lawyer; understands finance and econ develp; moderate

John Eby: moderate Rep. who understands neighborhood development

Cecil Thomas: former cop who is very collaborative

Leslie Ghiz: lawyer; moderate deal maker (though needs to tone down the 'tude)

Greg Harris: PhD & Pepper-esque policy mind; moderate

Pete Witte: neighborhood activist and small business owner

Wendell Young: another former cop who has the mindset to compromise and gets things done

Gravatar I kind of like the current council. At least they are insistent on keeping a budget.

Gravatar I think I said in another thread that Cole didn't know what she was supporting in the budget debate, and that Monzel wasn't even there.

Berding seems to be an anti-populist; he really doesn't care what people think, because he's so good at business. His budget is still only given out on a need-to-know basis, and he's pushing the City toward concentration of power in the hands of a few institutions which are only indirectly responsive to the people. Fuck that guy; he's a bitch.

Gravatar ahoy hoy, fuck that man

Gravatar let's face it - black females run strong in city council races.

lakita, connected to d. tillery, offers little but ran strong in '03 & '05. cooper maxed on terms & alicia, allegedly idle & broke, twice finished 2nd to pepper.

a first time male(s) with good non-political credentials (c. thomas, berding & bortz) often can get on. greg harris fits that profile for '07.

nut cases & selfish egotists are seemingly out of vogue - too bad for windbag, demon lynch & smithermaniac.

cranley will run again. hopefully, strickland gives alicia a job!

Gravatar Cranley, Crowley & Thomas sold out the West Side folks on this 2007 Budget & they won't forget that.

Psycho Smitherman & Demon Lunch don't stand Frosty the Snowman's chance in Hell.

I don't see the West Side folks backing John Eby to the hilt like they did in the last election. He'll get on the wagon for a community endeavor or a project, attend 1, 2 meetings & disappear. However, he'll tell everyone he actively participates in all these projects. He's only grooming himself to be a lying politician.

And I'd enjoy seeing Laketa Cole go out the door. The only communities she's interested in are College Hill & Bond Hill. It's screw the rest of them. Didn't vote for her in the past & I'm certainly not going to start now.

However, I'll definitely vote for Leslie Ghiz again. She's got backbone & bite. And she doesn't take any shit off anyone, including that glamorous dandy of a piss poor mayor we are stuck with.

Gravatar Sols out the West side how? As we've seen, THE WEST SIDE HAS THE HIGHEST CRIME RATE IN THE CITY. 60 extra cops is for you guys.

Gravatar I disagree, John Eby is a decent hard working, family man that dedicates his time to not only his community, but several non-profit organizations city wide.

Gravatar "I disagree, John Eby is a decent hard working, family man that dedicates his time to not only his community, but several non-profit organizations city wide."

Let's welcome John Eby to the debate.

Jeff Berding has a pair of nuts on his face. Fuck that guy.

Gravatar Check out Sean Holbrook at the Cincinnati Beacon.

Gravatar Sean . . . stop writing about yourself on the blogsphere. Your an idiot fringe candidate who won't get more than 30-votes.

Gravatar I think I just decided that I'm running for council, and I think it's purely so that I can print bumperstickers that say "Jeff Berding has a pair of nuts on his face. Fuck that guy."

Gravatar I wont get more than 30 votes huh?
I am going to make it a point to get 31 just to prove you wrong.

Personally you don't know me, so saying im an idiot is kind of pointless. Now if you wanted to call me inexperienced I would agree, but everyone has to start somewhere.

I know that a lot of people are threatened by the idea of someone like myself running. I don't fit the mold. I'll even admit that im kind of nuts, weird, X-Rated, and I want to represent the poor, GLBT community, elderly, disabled, and ethnic minorities. My beliefs involve putting citizens before business and asking the question of, "how much money is enough?" to large business's.
I know that I am in for 11 months of jokes and negativity by people who are so bitter in life that they would rather blog and bitch all day than actually try to change things. But that doesn't matter, I know in my heart that I am doing the right thing. If I lose I lose, but at least I'm going to try.
