Javier's isn't bad, but when you say "Cincinnati's best Mexican restaurant," do you just mean downtown? If so, that might be the case. If not, it might be worth getting in your car.

And where would we head, if you don't mind mentioning that part.

I'll say Javier's is the best Mexican restraurant in the city. Name one that's better.

Great, I've loved Javier's since he was on Court and I hope he does well, he's worked like a dog, taken risks and earned everything he's got.
So while wishing him well, maybe his Latin weekends will also draw the Saturday night Corinthian crowd out of Corryville/Clifton so we don't have to worry about getting caught in the crossfire of their drunken gangbanging punks.

La Mexicana in Newport is very good, but a tad overpriced. Tacqueria Mercado (now only in Fairfield) is very good, and more reasonable. Casa Tequila in Florence (at the intersection of Mall Road and 1 is some of the best I've had in the area. It's nothing fancy (although certainly nicer than Javier's) and most don't even know about it but the ingredients are always fresh and they have great authentic Mexican dishes.
I'm not sure about other Mexican restaurants in the City of Cincinnati. I wouldn't be surprised if Javier's is it. The immigrants who start these restaurants wouldn't naturally settle down in the middle of the city. They've tended to locate in pockets out in the burbs.

That is the intersection of Mall Road and Eighteen. Not sure what was up with the smiley.

This is great news. I've wished he was open in the evenings many times.

Clint, you listed Newport, Florence and Fairfield after nitpicking between a city and a neighborhood. Criminy, 2 of your choices are in a different state !!
whatever......
I kinda like Las Panchos out on Colerain.

The author claimed Javier's was Cincinnati's best Mexican. I was just wondering if that meant the region, the city, or downtown. La Mexicana is just over the river on Monmouth - still part of the urban core.
Tostado's in Columbia-Tusculum/East End is technically in the city but I've never eaten there. Not sure how it is.

Tostadas is very good. They still have some German dishes left over from its former identity. There is a real Tostado, too. That's his last name. Best salsa I have ever had.

Never heard of any such incidents. Do share.

I don't even live in Cincy anymore, but I still miss Fontova's (which was in Covington) - that place was as good as any Mexican joint out here in California, and cheap. Great owner, too; I've heard he's going to try to re-open.

This is awesome! Javier's is such an excellent restaurant. FINALLY, they are going to be open for evening hours! I've been hoping they would do this ever since the first time I ate there. Great news for Downtown!

I can't eat at La Mexicana. I got food poisoning there and know two others who did too.
I do love Javiers. Rio Grande in Newport is tasty.

Margarita's isn't bad if you want fajitas, but my favorite margaritas are at Jalapenos in Kenwood. I love La Mexicana-- their barbacoa is to die for (I was dismayed to go to Nada's, order their barbacoa, and not notice the difference except for price). Acapulco up in Lebanon is actually very good-- not the usual "let's cover everything in refried beans" that most Mexican restaurants use in place of more expensive ingredients.
Looking forward to Javier's having a liquor license, for sure.
