I agree. Even though I don't think much of the Enquirer, we need a local newspaper that at least tries. Plus, the human cost for workers will be pretty bad.

Though in the past, i do not think that The Enquirer has been that responsible in is reporting, it has come along way. Maybe this "restructuring" will be for the best.

"...If the content side (reporters, editors, layout, web tech) is greatly affected, this would mean a thin news outlet becoming affectively nothing. There would be no one left to gather any news, let alone maintain the limited news gathering level they have presently..."
The Enquirer has been cutting and pasting news from other sources for years. How would anyone notice a change?
Maybe the proof readers from Bangalore and Bombay will have a better grasp of English...

"It is dangerous when the public have no base level of journalism they can count on. Cincinnati has been losing and may totally lose that base in a couple of weeks."
Are you talking about the Enquirer?

Are they gonna buy out local TV news and close them out first? More people get local news from TV than from newspapers.

CAJD, those are the columnists that bring in the most money. These cuts will leave ONLY the conservative voices.
What's more, there is no "base level of journalism" at the Enquirer--there hasn't been one for decades. That's the problem with it.

what the hell are you talking about, Luke? What columnists who bring in the most amount of money? Bronson is the only regular local columnist listed there; he's a conservative.
And while more people might get news from all four local TV stations put together, the vast, vast majority of the *journalism* is produced by the Enquirer. All four TV news' 30-minute script wouldn't fill two pages of the Enquirer. There's more original reporting in one day's newspaper than in a week's worth of TV broadcasts.
Folks who criticize the Enquirer have plenty of material to work with. But Brian's absolutely right to call it a "base level of journalism," and to understand the importance of that. The Enquirer is the only outlet that routinely covers the Cincinnati school board, suburban governments and school boards, federal court and more. You take that away, and you'll simply never hear about those entities again (barring the occasional huge story). And elected officials definitely behave differently when they know they're not being watched.
Again, there's plenty of bad things about the Enquirer. And if you want to encourage or start up a competing entity, more power to you. It's a free market. But let's not pretend it could possibly be a good thing to have fewer full-time, professional journalists working in our city.

Let's hope that Bronson is the first to go. He gets paid a big fat salary and contributes nothing to the Fishwrap.
