Maybe I shouldn't enter this sandbox, but hasn't the Watchmen book been out longer? So hasn't it possibly sold more copies due to its longevity?

V began as a serial in WARRIOR magazine in th early eighties. Watchmen didn't come out as a serial comic until '87. However, Watchmen capitalized on the fame of Alan Moore on both Miracleman and Swamp Thing. Then V for Vendetta came out as a trade paperback.
