Cafe Brownsville

I gasped when he gave his explanation on where the word handicap originated from. Was that really necessary? I took my kiddos to the meeting with me. My daughter asked, "what the heck is he talking about?"

I later caught my daughter smirking. She told me she thought it was funny that the Mayor was scolding everyone for not asking permission to speak, yet he was interrupting everyone and the speakers at the podium.

Children can be so observant. Fortunately, there weren't major fireworks, but we did leave early.

Why is it that G&T paving wins every paving contract that the city puts out? Why is it that GTC is often seen with the owner of G&T paving at the V.

Why is it that Escobedo's security company was suddenly given a huge contract after GTC was seen on several occasions with Escobedo?

Why is it that Jorge Flores, a known confidant of GTC, was given a huge commission on the sale of property that GTC has been trying to get the city to sell for over a year?

Why isn't someone investigating all these things? How is it that a man with the intelligence of a drunken sailor is helping every friend he has and the rest of the commission is going along with it? WTF???

People who are considerate towards special needs individuals know that the word "handicap" is derogatory in nature. I don't expect people to understand but I have a right to ask people to refrain from using the word. It is shameful and disrespectful. When I was small, I used the word handicap but it was only because I was naive and didn't know better. When I was 15 years old, I was taken to the Moody Clinic to visit my brother where I used the word and was told by many people there that it was wrong of me to use the word. Out of respect, I have tried my darnest not to use the word.

Melissa,
be lucky your kids are healthy. I hope nothing happens to them where they might be confined to a wheelchair or worse. It is something that you need to respect and that is it. You are a mom, explain it to your daughter so she can understand. Be a little smarter than that.

"People who are considerate towards special needs individuals know that the word "handicap" is derogatory in nature."

You, once more, are wrong. Read the history of the word again, GoodTime. Its entymology is anything but shameful. Folks like you have just revised history (French beggars, honestly?) and bastardized its use over the years, for the sake of political correctness.

Calling a word (like "idiot", for example) derogatory is a cop-out. People (such as when I call you an "idiot") are derogatory.

"I have a right to ask people to refrain from using the word."

Now this part is correct. The First Amendment applies to idiots, too.

"Be a little smarter than that."

Too much to ask for in your case, I'm afraid.

CD,

Did "sideliner" answer the correct posting or should they have posted to the Thursday, May 08, 2008 question,"
Should/Could Commissioners Receive Benefits?"

Touché, Kurgan.
