Thanks, Chris. This was well thought out (and it's likely I'll use this argument as if it were my very own) and well written. Excellent insight.
Your Mum is absolutely right, although I prefer to use the word "nutters"
Tell her that Dubya is Christian - and directly responsible for scores more deaths on foreign soil than all recent terrorist violence combined. Tell her that Islam, Judaism, and Christianity all come from the same place, the same history, and the same principles. Tell her that Nazis often acted in the name of religious purity - and yet most of the Christian world had a problem with what they were up to.
And most of all, tell her that if the Islamic world is reacting so (stupidly) vehemently to such things, it's in REACTION to something greater than simple religious fanaticism, and that we'd do well to start asking ourselves just why these people seem to be so pissed off. Brushing them all with stereotypes is easy, and it caters to our fears and anger. But it does nothing to solve the problem. In fact, it compounds it.
I do understand her reaction. But I also think it's a dangerous path for us to go down.
