(sigh) foreign kisses are always the best ones. clay, you are experiencing the high that has kept me running for international departures every chance i get. the adventure of the unknown; discovering the world on your own terms; meeting, then getting to know people whose paths you would have never crossed stateside. stay in touch with each of your new friends, for they are windows to an existence different, yet the same as yours. honestly, you will never forget them.
on a more political note, i am very glad that you had a chance to discuss race vis-a-vis an african black man living in europe. as you point out, the consequences of colonization, slavery, and even "liberation" are mind-bogglingly complex. people don't like to think about it because it truly is painful, shameful, and ugly. yet to truly become a citizen of the world, you must allow yourself to ponder difficult aspects of the human condition. it really ain't all about mimosas and fashion week, as lovely diversions as those are.
