Gravatar I could not get it to finish loading. Even tried in safe mode with no luck.

Gravatar Thanks for trying Bob. I'm still curious about this one.

Gravatar I tried it and it seemed to work alright but the way it alerts is annoying. It alerts to each connection an app. makes to the internet so you have to allow each one. On an app that uses random ports to connect each time this gets annoying quick so I removed it. It would be a good program if it would just allow the app as a whole to access the internet and not by connection.

Gravatar Hi!

I took a look at this a few days ago. It's a "Lite" version of eEye's shareware product. It's clearly marked as Beta on the download page. "This product is free of charge during the beta period." What put me off was that it's a form of registerware. You have to supply your email address to download the software. You can opt out of the newsletters and alerts at that point, but they still state the following near the end of the form:
"NOTICE: By supplying my contact information, I am authorizing eEye to send me announcements of special promotions. I understand that I will have the opportunity to opt out of future communications at that time."

Think I'll pass.

Gravatar I just signed up for Blink and when I got the email with the download link, something in the email caught my eye - BETA - this is a Beta version. Oh, and one other thing, it clearly states - "Blink Personal Edition is free of charge during the beta period". This is misleading and not freeware at all - it's a hidden Beta test.

Gravatar I just wanted to comment on the review by Rocker452 - this application does allow you to specify rules by application and not only by individual port. You can also fine tune it if necessary by allowing communications on some ports but not others, or only allow udp, etc.

I have to say I've been fairly impressed by the software - it certainly makes me feel a LOT safer when using public wi-fi APs. It does take some time when you first start using it to "tune" what applications are allowed to access the net, but it also gives you a good idea of all the crap on your computer that is trying to phone home every thirty minutes. Basically, if something isn't performing as you expect, take the firewall down and see if it works. I've only found two or three instances where Blink was causing trouble and not giving me a notification (cygwin being one).

But as one reader mentioned, this is beta and I don't know how long it will be available for free...
