External drives are the ultimate backup systems for data. Cloudeight Information Avenue addressed a question submitted by a reader who wanted to know what the advantages and disadvantages are in using an external memory system. Info Avenue article ... External Drives. In their opinion they believe external hard drives are one of the best investments you could ever make. They are absolutely correct. In addition to Clif's excellent choice in buying a external drive, another top shelf product that I'm personally familiar with is Western Digitals external drives. I also favorably endorse this product as does Cloudeight. I've been hooked up to the WD "Raptor X" (150 GB) and recently upgraded to My Book "Pro Edition" triple interface with a whopping 500 GB's of memory. Hefty on the price, but well worth it.
Holds up to:
* 142,000 digital photos
* 125,000 songs (MP3)
* 12,000 songs (uncompressed CD quality)
* 38 hours of Digital Video (DV)
* 200 hours of DVD quality video
* 60 hours of HD video
Two simple words - " It Rocks ! "
Cheers ....

Mr. Clif:
I've got Cobian running on a few computers, and people really like it. Not the easiest to set up, but I have run into very few backup systems that can be called easy.
Backups are bulletproof. If you or anyone needs a quick intro to setting up a backup with Cobian, I have the instructions I can give people

In the past, when I've used backup progs like K's Replicator and Syncback to try to back up my C drive to my 250GB external hd, I received many error/failure messages for some folders like Documents and Settings, Program Files, and Windows.
Clif, Cobian is able to copy these folders successfully without any error/failure messages?

Hi AK, Cobian is like any other backup system that works inside of Windows. Some files can not be backed up while either Windows or some other application has the files locked. You should only use Cobian backup while you have nearly all your programs turned off. This will help you get as good a backup as you can.
