Q: What's the difference between LimeWire BASIC and LimeWire PRO?
A: Lime Wire offers two versions of its software: LimeWire BASIC, a free version, and LimeWire PRO, which is available for a one-time charge of $18.88. The purchase of LimeWire PRO gives users better search results, turbo-charged download speeds, connections to more sources, a guarantee of no ads or nagware, a special PRO only skin, personalized support via email and free updates for up to 6 months. The purchase of LimeWire PRO also helps to support an open-source movement that doesn't support itself by sneaking unwanted software onto users' computers

Frostwire is an excellent example of open source software. It is remarkably similar to Limeware without the limitions in the non Pro version.
Give it a spin!

as clif says a lot of the downloaded files are trojans so you need an up to date AV program (i use AVG free) to scan downloaded files before opening them. The free version also has a nag window asking to upgrade to Limewire Pro which is fair enough (since i use the free version)but annoying nevertheless

Agreed about Frostwire. I use the latest beta and it works fine.
A trick I learned long ago: some users state they connect with a modem, but have a faster connection. If the only file you want is from a modem user, check it anyway. It might be a ruse by someone who just doesn't want their bandwidth hammered, lol!
