Comments for Clif Notes Newsletter

Gravatar Dear 'Clif',
It never fails that I find an answer to a techie problem just after I've suffered through it!
My mousie died a couple od days ago, and I couldn't load the new beastie's program without a couple of phone calls, because I couldn't figure out how to enter commands without a working mouse - problem now solved?
(If only I could figure out how to unzip the file!)
Thanks - on dialup I appreciate anything small to download!

Gravatar Hi Brenda,

Thanks for the comment. Unzipping? Try these two websites.

Gravatar Hi Clif,
In your current newsletter you take a look back to an old newsletter and recommend A2 Free. I'm sorry to say that I really can't recommend this programme. Great it may be, but it's so darn hard to get through to its server to update its signature files - nine times out of ten the attempt fails. As you're well aware, any anti-scumware programme is only as good as its latest update. If this is too difficult to obtain, then in my view it's not up to the job, unfortunately.
Kevin.

Gravatar Hi Kevin,

I looked into this. There was a problem. Here is what they recommend.

"There was a bug in the updater update of today. If the updater does not run anymore, you have to uninstall and re-download the setup package from our website.

I apologize for the troubles it made.

Gravatar hey, this is a mega-cool browser window-within-a-window that you use for the Wayback Machine. How do you do it?

Gravatar Hi Bob,

It's a simple HTML I-frame. Nothing any webmaster can't do easily.

Gravatar Hi!
Ah, trips down memory lane...
Is Boogie Jack Still active? His site's up, but I don't see any updates since last year.
I'd forgotten about InternetFixes. The site's still messy and complicated, but the information is first-rate. I'll go back later...
The Straight Dope! Seeing that again rated a dope slap to my forehead. Talk about hours of surfing fun and knowledge.

Thanks for the reprint.

Gravatar Has anyone tried TrueWallet? I installed it, but the "fill in fields" button isn't being added to the browser. 2 emails to the author haven't been answered despite claims of 48 hour response to email. I'm looking for a replacement for Roboform, but so far, this doesn't like like the answer.

Gravatar Warning on the download of the program "Free Buttons" from free-buttons.org. Avast! real-time scanner told me that after I pressed the download link a trojan tried to get into my system. I just deleted the sandbox and everything is fine. This might be a false positive because SiteAdvisor states it has tested that site and that download, and saw no problems.

Gravatar Thanks for the warning AK. I'll look into it.

Gravatar RagTime Solo (desktop publishing) (last freeware version) still available from here:http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2007/ PL2007BUSINESS-HOME.php

Gravatar Thanks for the tip Vegard. I edited the review and added the link to Pricelessware's page.

Gravatar Nice to see Wounded Moon mentioned. Another favorite of mine for those hard to find freewares is The Mole Zone.

Check it out.

Gravatar While I use Agent Ransack for searches, Snowbird is an old favorite too. The HTML output is very handy for referring back to previous searches. Check out Madhavan's other programs; they're small, fast, and cleanly coded.

A favorite is a little no-install cleaner called Bytewasher2, the latest version. A safe way to clean unnecessary files off your drives, IMHO.

Gravatar Hi Clif...

Yet another GR8 Newsletter and Old Newsletter's.
I have downloaded "Itty Bitty Process Manager" purely for the ablility to copy and paste instead of having to take a screen shot etc...

Gravatar Hi JFW,

Thanks for the link. I've edited the old newsletter to reflect your find.

Gravatar Reading your pages, with all the great references to other helpful sites and people, always helps to restore my faith in the intrinsic goodness of the majority of web users. Thanks for uplifting my spirits.

Gravatar To anyone still using SiteAdvisor. A newer product TrendProtect (from Trend Micro) is far superior in providing site feedback. Only one of the two functioning on your computer. Having used SA in the past, it's ancient history for me, Mindblower!

Gravatar Hi Clif!

Nice to see PhotoFiltre mentioned again. Constantly updated, it just gets better. The author has put a great deal of work into this version. I picked up his shareware version, known as PhotoFiltre Studio, just to help support the project. PhotoFiltre Free is in v.6 from January '07. You can find it here: http://photofiltre.free.fr/frames_en.htm

Gravatar regarding the item "FutureMe", well, um...
> When I received this yesterday, it took me a minute to recall that I had indeed sent this one year ago. It helped that it certainly seemed like something I would do & say.
> If only I could recall what knowledge the message was intended to impart... other than being a generally good fortune-cookie insert.

even more embarassing, I found this missive I had evidently sent to friends regarding the service...

>"Hi, Future Me...it's your old self, Me, here...."
>What could you possibly have to say? Maybe the answer to: "What was I thinking?!?" (hmmm, on second thought, that maybe hits a little too close to home)

ahem.
Now I'm wondering in what order I sent them. LOL

Gravatar Hi Bob,

I noticed that too and I'll keep an eye on it ... eye on it ...

Gravatar Hi Clif!

Does this mean c/net is a 'bad' place?!?!?!?!?! oh my........

Gravatar c/net is not exactly a bad place. That is, if you follow their rules. If you don't, then it can be an irritating and frustrating experience. I, for one, have just about quit going to their forums and most web stories.

Gravatar cliff, the old newsletter box is blank

Gravatar Re: the Pricelessware 2007 note in the 1/27/2008 newsletter, let's hope there's a PW 2008 version. The ng has never been the same since a few disruptive subscribers fell into it last summer.

Gravatar A glitch Clif - the 'Old Newsletter' space is completely blank. Have tried it with various browsers - but sadly with the same result. Please fix before your faithful readers suffer serious withdrawal symptoms!!

Love, Light and Peace

JC

Gravatar Thanks JC. I had a domain issue. It should be ok now.

Gravatar Good man Clif! You are a scholar and a gentleman - and there aren't many of us left!!
