Hi!!!
I used to work with Mail Box Dispatcher and I was fully satisfied with it. It reads your mail headers and optionally the first part of the text message (configurable). It's learnable and lets you review the results. Then it deletes spam on the server (without downloading them on your system). Finally, regular mails downloading at your PC.
The only reason for uninstalling it, is that with a slow internet connection, its much faster to go on-line at Yahoo, review and delete the spam folder and donload the rest.

Have a nice day!!!

Personally, i've been using Barca (shareware) and it has a great filtering system. With a marvellous back-up/restore system that saves all those messages i've come to acknowledge as spam or non-spam.
I don't think you can really get away from a good shareware or paid email service in this area.

I used SpamBayes (freeware) with Outlook, and now with Thunderbird. It works much better than the built in Thunderbird spam filter.
Recently though, spammers have started sending spam in images, and send spam free "stories" to confuse and bypass the filters. Looking at the "spam score" the filter rates it 0% spam :-(. I realized at that point that filters are pretty much useless.
Sadly, I've now had to shift to simply using whitelists. If it is not in my addressbook, automatically send it to the trash folder. I then check trash to make sure nothing was sent that I want to keep. If so, I add it to my address book. This has worked VERY well.
It does make you wonder why spammers think that if they are clever enough to bypass my filters, I'll buy their products (or fall for their schemes) rather than be infuriated at them for wasting even more of my time.

I use Thunderbird and am very impressed with its spam filter. From the description of the problem in your newsletter it sounds like Thunderbird's adaptive mode is turned off.
I find that the occasional SPAM message does slip through but I would estimate that Thunderbird catches at least 85% of my junk (often more).

Sick & Tired of all the spam & junk that comes through Outlook Express, I recently installed Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 (although now, I see that SpamBrave Lite for OE (a Bayesian spam filter) is available from SnapFiles), but I haven't tried it. I tend to agree that Thunderbird doesn't seem to be remembering what I tell it is spam. I also use MailWasher® Pro (shareware) from firetrust which is excellent at catching & controlling spam. However, lately I have noticed that even MailWasher will not allow me to 'blacklist' offenders, due to phoney or improperly formed addresses. Seems that the purveyors of junk, spam, and just general unpleasantness have wised-up, and so the fight goes on!

Here's a set of anti-spam tips that were emailed to me from Mindblower.
"The first one that comes to mind is Secretmaker of course http://www.secretmaker.com . Then there is K9 at http://keir.net/k9.html . If you use PopTray http://www.poptray.org/ then you're sure to find vast info about how they http://forum.poptray.org/ inform users to block spam (reference topic http://forum.poptray.org/viewtop...opic.php?
t=2704 ). Catch you later, Mindblower!"
Thanks MB!

I also use Thunderbird and think its great. I agree with Eli and think you may have the adaptive part turned off or maybe (you used the word trash, not junk) you are deleting them rather than "junking" them...

I use Popfile http://popfile.sourceforge.net/
A little tricky to set up for novices but definitely works. My stats currently at 97% accuracy rate. I have also used K9 mentioned above and found this very good as well.
