Gravatar Re; Quick Time Alternative (there's no comment link)

Haven't the people at Apple taken the hint that their Quick Time program is a memory bloat and that people are shunning away from it? Or, do they intend to keep it that way?

Gravatar I'm looking for a freeware alternative to the old and slow (but still free) Total Uninstall.

ERUNT works best if you want to uninstall right away, not so well if you want to remove a program several months after installation.

Gravatar Hello. I am looking for a program that automatically centers all open windows, whether they are folders, programs, picture viewers, or anything else viewable from the desktop. I'm not talking about a program that opens a window full size automatically, like IE Maximizer. I want a program that centers specifically sized window that don't take up the whole desktop. I haven't been able to find anything. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Gravatar I'm looking for a DVD to Mpeg4 converter.

Gravatar Reply to Bill Allin.
Hi Bill - The most highly recommended free uninstaller I know of is ZSoft Uninstaller, available from:
http://www.zsoft.dk/
This software takes a 'snapshot' of files and registry before and after installation for comparison and is recommended for experienced users.(I have a feeling you may fall into that category).
I am not so experienced and use Ss Uninstaller available from:
http://www.ss-tools.com/
It is very easy to understand and use and does a much better job than the Windows add/remove fuction.
I get the impression that Ss Tools are the 'new kids on the block' but they are putting together a number of nice free apps for download, take a look.

Hope that may help,
Regards...JIM

Gravatar I use Windows XP. I'd like some means of opening every folder in the List view--unless it contains nothing but jpegs. In that case, I'd like it to open in Thumbnail view.

I know this can be done one folder at a time, but I have 17,000 picure folders, and for some reason or other I occassionally find they all revert to an Icon view. The amount of effort required to make all of them thumbnail again, without doing the same to my 8,000 music folders, is just too much.

Gravatar I run XP Home. For a while I used MSIE. It got too many people attacking it, so I switched to Foxfire. Now it, too, is suffering from many attacks. I tried out Opera, but it won't run lots of web pages. What's a computer user to do? Any suggestions for a good web browser that isn't being hacked and attacked? Thanx, Fred

Gravatar I second Jimbo's first pick for an uninstaller. I use Zsoft quite often. It's not super fast like ERUNT, but works more quickly than TUN.

Gravatar @Bill,

I use InCtrtl5: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/ 0,...149,9882,00.asp
or alternatively: http://www.bootcd.us/BartPE_Plug...56/ InCtrl5.html

Gravatar Try Advanced Browser, it works really well. I use it in all the systems I build for people. No one has ever had any problems with it.

Gravatar Hey Clif, as you mencion QuickTime Alternative, you may know that it´s impossible to run Itunes whitout it. So I do need an alternative to Itunes. Do you have one in mind that doesn´t require neither .Net or Java? TIA

Gravatar response to Norm
it might be worth inverting in an Explorer replacement. Directory Opus is v.good. Expensive though - there's probably other more reasonable Explorer replacements that do the job well.
XYplorer has been getting lots rave reviews lately

Gravatar Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
You CNoters rock!
Now I have some experimenting to do.

Gravatar Hi Clif,
I am a regular reader of your news letter. Thank for all informations published hitherto. I am in need of a batchfile or similar programme to run different files in my PC one after another in a predetermined sequential order. For eg., a text, then a MP3 music, an HTML, an .exe , etc. Can you help ?

Thanks.

Gravatar Answer to Fred Huddle.
Hi Fred - Why not try "Sandboxie"? It allows you to use any browser of your choice but you will be connected to the net in a 'virtual' environment. That means that the results of all your activities will be isolated in a 'sandbox' which, at the end of your session can easily be emptied, leaving your computer in it's original state. Any associated nasties would, of course, also be cleared. Sandboxie has a tiny foot print, is very simple to set up and easy to use.
A simple, effective way to browse safely.
Hope this helps.........JIM

Gravatar Hiya Clif,

thats just ripping people off. My second link lets you download it for free. Here is two more sites where you can just download it for free:

http://www.devhood.com/Tools/too...spx? tool_id=432

or

http://www.bootcd.us/BartPE_Plug...56/ InCtrl5.html

(look for the download url part).

Gravatar Answer to Fred Huddle

Try IE7 and keep all the default filters in place.

Gravatar Question for Jayaram

What are you doing to the different files in your PC one after another in a predetermined sequential order.

I have some batch files setup for users and I was curious what you are trying to do.

Gravatar Hi Gary Chambers,
I am using Win98. I would like to do the following sequentially: Disk defragmentation, sfc, play music list in real player in the background while checking some calculations with self created VB.exe files, then checking mail in gmail inbox, hotmail and yahoo. This question arose more out of curiosity in automation using some freeware programme. Thanks for the response.

Gravatar Dude this is such an awesome addition to your newsletter!

I need a program that catalogs the many programs i have downloaded automatically and provides me with information like the version it is. I know one program SoftCat (sorry can't remember link) does this but it is shareware. There is a freeware version but that does not automatically find and get the info for all the programs

Thanks

Gravatar Reply to Jayaram

That’s a little more than my Batch Files will do. The files that I have online right now are just setup to do daily comparison and backups of a set of files.

Gravatar Thanks again Johannes.

I note that the two sites provided different zipped files. One was about 333 KB while the other was around 886 KB.

Also, the Readme from the larger version says that InCtrl5 works for Windows versions up to Win2K, but there is no mention of XP or Vista.

I can't confirm what the other works for (yet). it didn't come with a Readme.

Maybe PCMag is selling a version of InCtrl5 for XP and Vista.

In any event, XP and Vista users should be aware that the freeware versions still available may not work on their systems.

Gravatar @Bill et al:

Hey Bill,

sorry. I use the 886kb version on my Win XP Pro and it works just fine on my pc. I apollogise for not checking the different versions, I didnt even compare with the one I saved on my PC .
As its my birthday today and I was about to leave for some activities when I posted, I didnt check - just wanted the links to work.

HTH,

Johannes

Gravatar Hi Gary,

Thanks once again.

Jayaram

Gravatar InCtrl5 works well. However, unlike Total Uninstall that will physically remove what was added when a program was installed, InCtrl5 will only notify you of what was changed or added so that you can remove the files and registry entries yourself manually, if I understand the program correctly.

Both ZSoft Uninstaller and Uninstall Manager work as advertised, but neither physically removes exactly what was added either. Maybe I have missed something with these programs.

Gravatar The ZSoft program will remove most of the stuff added during installation if you "Analyze" the program during installation. This is very similar to how Total Uninstall (TUN) works.

The only feature that ZSoft doesn't have in comparison to TUN is the very cool tree view of files and registry entries that TUN provides you.

ZSoft does create a log file of everything it detects during an analysis of an install, but the log file is difficult to read in comparison to the tree view used in TUN.

Best wishes to all, and thanks for the great comments.

Clif
.

Gravatar Thanks Clif. I discovered my error after posting my last comment. When the ZSoft program will completely remove what was installed, that makes is valuable.

The "difficult to read" log file is no problem because no one wants to get into that unless a removed program left tendrils. When that happens the inconvenience is so great that I will endure great pain to get rid of the offending files and reg entries.

Gravatar To Jayaram

If you are still looking for the commands that will start exe files in a batch file here is an example.

Start /wait c:file switches

An example would be:

Start /wait c:windowssystem32sfc /scan now
Start /wait C:windowssystem32defrag c /f
and so on.

Hope that helps

Gravatar Oops

Don't use the lines as they are as Haloscan removed key parts of the command. If any of you want this example post a question on my website and I will forward it.

Gravatar Advanced Browser runs on the Internet Explorer engine (it's a shell program) and, as such, is subject to all the security problems that IE is.

The answer to safe browsing is constant updates of browser, antivirus and anti-malware, and careful use of the Net. Firefox is safer than IE, but even IE is fairly safe if kept updated along with the other precautions for safe surfing. Firefox updates and fixes seem to be faster, but no program can protect you from stupid surfing, regardless of the frequency of updates. By definition, updates and other fixes tend to be reactive, rather than proactive.

I highly recommend a sandbox for surfing (Sandboxie is good). It has the additional advantage that if you get a questionable download you can open it in the sandbox with perfect safety. Your antivirus and other anti-malware programs will still work and you can check it out carefully. Another advantage: try out programs in there, and if you don't like them...zzzip, they're gone. If you find you like them, reinstall outside the sandbox.

THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR SMART SURFING, FOLKS! If you're looking for a program that's so smart that you can be stupid, you're out of luck.

Gravatar Meant to add that Firefox, NOD32, ZoneAlarm Pro (firewall with malware scanner) and AdAware Pro work well for me, along with Sandboxie. I also use a "physical" firewall, built into the router. Overkill? Don't know. I do know I've had zero problems since I began using the combination.

Gravatar Advance Browser "seems" to have morphed to become Ace Explorer (still an IE shell). In attempting to download Advance Browser, I was instead offered Ace Explorer.

As advertised, Ace Explorer is faster than IE and most of the other IE derivatives.

However, after having it installed for about three days, it began to announce that my copy was an evaluation copy which only operated for 10 minutes at a time, then shut down automatically. Imagine my delight at losing everything I had open in Ace Explorer. I uninstalled it.

I wrote to the author about this but have not heard back. Given the rumour that Advance Browser was originally a ripped off special project of the author of Avant Browser, I remain suspicious of everything related to this group of browsers.

I'm pretty sure that DonationCoder has a little SoftwareSkrommel app that will do that

DonationCoder again - There is a long forum thread with info on DOZENS of cataloging apps
Also, there's a couple free apps that list installed programs (do a search using 'installed applications')

Gravatar REQ: I want (and have been searching for years for) a program that REPAIRS the links in the Windows Registry - not NOT NOT just deletes dead entries, which is what ALL the bloody programs do that Clean (like ethnic cleansing?), Fix (like your cat?), or otherwise euphemistically claim to remedy the problem. There used to be a little hidden app in Partition Manager for updating the links as part of MOVING the apps, but it 's too late for that even - I've moved a bunch of stuff (games, mainly) from one drive to another to others (including a SAN). If I have to, I'll go in and do Search & Replace in the registry, but, oy! that's gonna be a chore.

Gravatar I am looking for a photo editor that tidies up the resolution when I zoom in on a picture several times. I have seen the police use a pro version and similar programs used on cop shows on TV.
The best I have found does a reasonable job when zooming 300%. Of course that's with a decent resolution to begin with.
Anything around in freeware?

Gravatar I would really like a little progie that would make a new folder for a file. For instance if I have a zip file called reader.zip, if I could right click it and have the option to make a folder called reader that I could put it in. I get so sick of right clicking and choosing new then folder then typing in reader. Sounds trivial but it is so annoying when you have fifty files that you want to make a separate folder for each file

Gravatar Reply to Marlene

Winzip and WinRAR will both create a folder for you if you use the right click menu. The file folder has the same name as the Zip file you are opening.

Just right click on the zip file in question.

Gravatar Thanks Gary. I do use Winrar, but it puts all the files from the zipped file into the folder when I use it to create a folder. But I usually have several files that may not be zip files that I want to go into the folder and if I use an unzip program these files will be mixed up with the contents of the zip files. For example, I might have a freeware zipped file and several files like manuals or pdf files explaining what the zipped file does. I would like to put them all in one folder but not mixed up with the freeware programs files if you know what I mean.

Maybe I am a bit too organized for my own good, but I would imagine that there might be others who could use this type of thing.

Thanks for any ideas.

Gravatar Hello Marlene,

I've made a "Coding Snack" request at DonationCoder. If they accept the challenge, somebody there will create this program for you.

If you register there you can even post in the forum to tell them exactly what you want.

Do you just generally want a folder of your choice in the "send to" sub-menue? If so, its really easy: http://www.tunexp.com/tips/custo...e_send_to_menu/
just in case the above link breaks again, here s a tiny url: http://tinyurl.com/b3glc

Gravatar Boy there are lots of replies on the donationcoder.com regarding this. I will keep looking to see if they come up with something. Thanks for submitting my request there.

to Your Highness

The thing is I may have several files say:
freeware.zip
explanation of freeware.pdf
screenshotof freeware.jpg

Right now I have to right click on the first file then choose new then folder then type or copy a title for the folder and when the new folder is made, I move all the files into it.

I want to right click on the first file and have it put into a folder entitled "freeware" and then I can move the other two into that folder so that all the files pertaining to the freeware.zip file are in their own folder.

Sorry I am not very good at explaining myself.

Gravatar Looking for something to simply remember logging in details on various news websites. Firefox always asks me if I want to remember when I'm not sure if I have the correct login data but never after!

Try RoboForm. I use the Pro Version but you could probable get away with the free version.

http://www.roboform.com/

Gravatar Many thanks Gary and Clif I think this will suit me fine.I have installed the free version and ready to try it out. Don't know why I didn't think of it myself as I used it some years ago.
Ron.

Gravatar Reply to Marlene.
When I want to open a compressed file, right clicking offers me three options using my zip program. I can unzip the files in the same folder as the zipped file is in already. I can unzip the files into a new folder that will be one level down in the folder tree. I can opt to open the files in a still different folder of my choice.
These options are the same for any zip program I have used.
Why not just choose the second option, which gives a folder with the same name as the zipped file, unzip the zip file then add the other file to that folder.
You need to be certain that you do not have two folders with the same name however. This could result in confusion or corruption later.
I usually download to a folder with the filename followed by (p) which in my shorthand means the "pure form of the file." Then I unzip to a new folder which the zip program creates using the name of the zipped file. Then I install to a different drive partition. All this avoids confusion.
I also use Filenote to create a text file with the URL for the site where the zip was downloaded from plus details of the program so I have these data to refer to later. Such as now when I will find the URL for Filenote.
http://www.moonsoftware.com/freeware.asp
Or try http://snipurl.com/1oxa6

Note that I find the later version of Filenote (2.10) to have an excessive number of toys that are found in other utilities I count on more. The URL above is for Filenote 1.1.0

Gravatar Thanks Bill

I see what you mean with the zip file and using the "extract files..." option and making a subfolder in the same name, then move the zip and other files into the main folder and delete the subfolder and that is great and will work with zip files one at a time.

The other thing I could do is highlight all zip files and use the "extract to separate folder" option, then go through each file and delete the contents of each folder and move the files into those folders.

Also, I still have the same quandary if I have a number of other types of files (pdf or doc or jpg or exe) that I want to put in a folder based on their file name.

But using your zip file tip will work for some of them at least although I still think it is a lot of work.

I just wish there was something so I could right click any folder and there would be an option entitled, for example, "put file in folder of same name". It would be so much easier.

I have used the Filenote program before and I had forgotten about it - I really like it - thanks for giving me the url so I can use it again. It is a neat little program.

Gravatar Hi Marlene,

AK at DonationCoder has made that program you need.

He calls it FileNanny (go to your bedroom) LOL

It may not be quite done yet. You may also have to register at DonationCoder forum in order to download it.

At this point, it does not integrate into the right click menu by itself. Instead, you should put the filenanny.exe file away somewhere and make a shortcut to it. Then you drag the shortcut into the SendTo menu as shown in my tutorial on this subject.
http://freewarewiki.pbwiki.com/SendTo

Here is a direct link to AK's post that contains the download link.
http://www.donationcoder.com/ For...g69930#msg69930

I'm impressed with AK's work. It works flawlessly on my PC.

Best wishes,

Hurray - thanks so much for your interest in my little gripe. The file nanny works great. Very very useful.
