Gravatar I LIKE IT! NO BELLS AND WHISTLES..loox good

Gravatar I have many programs installed on an external drive and would like to move them to the C: drive. Is there a program that can do this for me?

Gravatar Lawrence,

If the programs on your "external drive" are "portable" themselves then all you need to do is copy them into your "C:Program Files" folder and run them from there.
If they were installed using an installer program and are listed in the "Add or Remove Programs" folder (Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs) then they need to be uninstalled and then reinstalled using "C:Program Files" as the new destination.

Gravatar The format looks OK. Could get a little long if you get many comments. Easy to read.

Gravatar Noticed a few things. First, the pop-up comment method adds my name and email address automatically. Here I have to type it in. Second, after entering my comment the page reloads and I am at the top again. I need then to scroll back to where I was. With the pop-up comment I just close the window and carry on.

Gravatar It's a close call, but I like the old format better.

Gravatar The main page loaded slow enough with the old format (dialup connection--a few minutes). It will take even longer with this format. However, this style is easier to read.
Might people who are not interested in this feature find it a nuisance to scroll past it? (How lazy is that? But it happens.)

Gravatar Wow! The main page had to totally load again, though it did so faster. This will be my final comment in this format. Sorry, my life isn't long enough to wait for reloads following posted comments.

Gravatar Hi,

I need free software to cross-reference any RAM stick (laptop or desktop). In other words,

given a RAM stick with its associate identification, show other RAM sticks (if any) and

their IDs that can be used as substitues.

Gravatar I want to change movie format from MOV to AVI. The MOV was created on my CASIO camera and unloaded using Quick Time which creates the MOV?? I tried the free trial of "Soft Pepper" which requires a download of their suggested codec, and after downloading still does NOT work. Do you know of any other software that may work??? Since "Soft Pepper" is a free trial they do not respond to my question. Thanks, James

Gravatar JAMES - No need to purchase software to perform this chore...there are lots of good free video converters available...here are just a few for you to have a look at:

Gravatar James,
Jimbo is right about free converters, I'd like to add to the list my favorite (for simplicity).

WinFF from http://www.winff.org/

It is an easy to use freeware program that uses the power of the open-source freeware program FFmpeg. The have a setup on the site, but you can install it, copy the files from the installation folder to another folder and uninstall it to use it on a USB stick.

Gravatar Thanks for your appreciated help I shall take a look at all of them.

Thanks Jimbo and bigjohnny. James

Clif, great site. I like the new commenting format. Hence my first post.

Gravatar I'm looking for a program to create tutorials in Vista. I tried Wink, but it seems to freeze after I click to finish. Are there any other freeware programs to do this?

Thanks
Peg

Gravatar I have been using an Alps MD-1000 printer for many years and prefer it above anything else. Running XP, I recently downloaded an update for XP which, much to my dismay, wiped out my driver for this printer. The only way I could get it back was to go to "system restore". Can you tell me how I can get a driver which will survive XP updates?
Thanks

Gravatar Is there a freeware program that would find the key codes for a couple Atari and one Microsoft game? My granddaughter didn't keep up with the key codes to her games and now we need to install them on a new computer. These are legally owned games and I want to retrieve the key codes from their old computer. Thanks for any help.

Peg

Gravatar Hi cliff;
I am looking for a "Sketching" program. Something that will work like a pencil and pad of paper. I've tried using MS Paint, to simple for my meeds, and Paint.Net, which is to complicated. I just need to sketch out ideas at times to see how they would look.

Thanks, Jerry

Gravatar Hi Cliff,

How to make Irfanview 4.2 workable in Ubuntu 8.04? The latest wine seems to be helpless to do it!

Thanks.

Gravatar Thanks, exactly what I was looking for.

Gravatar PEG - As far as I know there is no such freeware available...however, the key codes for games should be in the registry...here is a link to a site which explains the procedure for searching the registry for a game's key code.

Please use caution when in the registry editor...be careful not to make any inadvertent changes.
cheers....JIM

I know this might be a bit of a stretch, it may not be simple, but how about Google Sketchup?

Gravatar I am looking for free Journal software. I don't need a PIM or scheduler with it. I just want something to write my thoughts in every day. Currently, I use KeyNote and it works fine, but I would like something specifically set up for a Journal (or diary). Thanks

Gravatar Thanks Cliff, but I've tried Google Sketch-up and it isn't exactly what I want. Thanks for trying though. Looks like I'll have to start hitting my programming books again and try to design something to fit my requirments. If I can get it to work I'll post it here for everyone.

Gravatar Jerry, You could try the freeware Sketch It at http://www.bestfreewaredownload....e- wswrgogk.html

Hi B.A.
I actually like KeyNote very much and I've been using it at work for at least two years now. If you want to take a step up to more features, I can recommend EssentialPim or EverNote.

http://freewarewiki.com/EssentialPim
(portable version available)

.

Gravatar Thanks Tom. That is going to take a few minutes to get used to.

Gravatar I have been using iDailyDiary that I found when going through some of Cliff's old newsletters. It is talked about here.

http://freewarewiki.com/iDailyDiary

So far, I have been very happy with it.

Gravatar I have been looking for a PORTABLE search engine for Windows for a while, and I'd love to find one that didn't need to be installed.
