Gravatar Occasionaly while I am not using my computer,"download meter" displays that something is being downloaded to my computer. How can I track what is being downloaded? For example it could be an updater working in the back ground

Gravatar Nice question Gerald. Not sure if there is such a program, since depending on have many programs you have loaded into memory which automatically check in from time to time, that you could get an exact hit.

I'm not an expert in this area, just offering my 2 cents worth, Mindblower!

Gravatar Hi Gerald,

You might try one or two apps like this once you notice a download you didn't initiate.

http://freewarewiki.com/ NetworkT...kTrafficMonitor

http://freewarewiki.com/CurrPorts

These tell you what application or service is connecting to the net.
.

Gravatar Thanks.
NetworkT...Traffic monitor does what I require, but it is shareware!.There are also pay programs that do this .Does anyone know of a freeware program?

Currports lists the ports but does not show which programs are using the various ports.
Gerald

Gravatar Darn, Traffic Monitor went shareware but the link at the site I steered you to has the last freeware version. In case you missed it, here's the download link.

http://www.321download.com/LastF...files/ nt102.zip

There's another free one I've used before. I'm having a tough time remembering the name of it ...

Ahhh, there it is. TCP View, now at Microsoft, but used to be at SysInternals. Excellent program for looking at connections.

Gravatar I am having trouble with Don't Panic software from Panicware.com I have bought it about 5 years ago and it has worked great all this time. I had to reformat my desktop and now it doesnt work! Does anyone know where I can get an older version to download? I wrote them for support but both times email came back undelivered. Today I cant get into their website. Is it just me? thanks for any advice/help I can get. I'm thinking of doing another reformat cause there must be something that didnt get installed.

Gravatar Thank you.
Both traffic monitor and tcpview detected that "avgemc.exe' was running in the background. As I had uninstalled avg sometime ago I was surprised to find it in my procecses .
A gogle search supplied the following info.
Important: Some malware camouflage themselves as avgemc.exe, particularly if they are located in c:windows or c:windowssystem32 folder. Thus check the avgemc.exe process on your pc whether it is pest

Gravatar Hi Marcella.

I've never heard of "Don't Panic". Can you tell us what it does? Would you be interested in something that does the same thing but is freeware?
.

Gravatar Oh wow. It's a great tool if a person needs privacy... pronto It's used to close out games, any windows or messengers for privacy if someone checks over your shoulder. It's a devious lil devil, but alot of people use it.You set it to close with mouse movements..or keystrokes. It has clearing and a popup stopper. There is much more to it that I havent needed so therefore I just can't explain it all. check it out. There are so many ways it can be configured its amazing. Of course I would be interested in a freeware , but I doubt there is one close to this one. I checked their website today www.panicware.com but it was not the right page! Not sure whats going on. Google it and u will be able to find it from other sites. I have done that on my pc and it still doesn't work. I will need to reformat my reformat LOL.
thanks Clif.
great newsletter !
Marcella

Gravatar If I didnt do a good job of explaining.. I found this link that does a much better job of it. I am not selling anything here so disregard the paypal thing. Just for reading
http://www.cooltoolawards.com/so...s/ dontpanic.htm

Gravatar Hi Marcella,

Here's a freeware version of Don't Panic if you'd like it.

It should run fine, except you'll want to uninstall the old copy before you install this one.

.

Gravatar don't panic sounds like a simple program to write a script for in AutoHotkey. AutoHotkey is a scripting language (fairly simple to write them in notepad) that let's you assign different keys, mouse actions, etc to manipulate windows, run programs, close, maximize, etc. It's freeware and there are tons of scripts already written, so you might find one that does what you want. Check it out at www.autohotkey.com .lists of scripts are here: http://www.autohotkey.com/wiki/ i...=Script_Listing

Gravatar Oh my.. thank you to both of you. I have downloaded the one from box.net
I'm not so sure about writing script. . I have no idea about that but I should learn Good project for cold canadian winters!
I also have to check out box.net thoroughly. What an interesting site.
thanks tons

Gravatar It's pretty Nice to ur newsletter.
I book marked ur newsletter in my browser for future updates.

Is there any wiki kind tool {collaborating with others} (Which is non installable{i.e, not a packaged software format) to work with desktop.

Gravatar Hi Hari.

Yes there are a few wiki tools that you can download and run on your desktop and they don't need to be installed.

Here are the top two I know of:

TiddlyWiki (many variations)
http://tiddlywiki.com

Wiki On A Stick
http://stickwiki.sourceforge.net/

Both of the above work best on Firefox or other Mozilla (Gekko) browsers.

More info on personal wikis?

Have fun!

Gravatar What do your readers think about the "ThreatExpert" online service?

I copy the following text from that web page:

"ThreatExpert (patent pending) is an advanced automated threat analysis system (ATAS) designed to analyze and report the behavior of computer viruses, worms, trojans, adware, spyware, and other security-related risks in a fully automated mode.

The ThreatExpert system produces reports with the level of technical detail that matches or exceeds antivirus industry standards such as those found in online virus encyclopedias."

Thanks for any answer.

Gravatar To Ernesto: I remember checking this site earlier this year. From what I see now, they are still in Beta stages and have glitches with their software. But from what they publish, it does seem to be worth waiting for, Mindblower!

Gravatar To Mindblower: Thank you for your comment. I'll have to wait.

Gravatar Threat Expert is a great resource and very commonly used by security experts all the time in their research.

They've also got a neat lil submission applet too:
http://www.threatexpert.com/ subm...sionapplet.aspx

While alot of it is very technical in nature, it's still provides great info.

Mindblower, what glitches have you observed?

Gravatar How do I stop getting notified of new messages on this page? I was following it for my question, but have unchecked the Notify me......... box. Yet I keep getting notices lol.
thanks Clif

Gravatar To TeMerc: Thank you.

I agree with your sentence "it is very technical".

As I am not any kind of expert, I was thinking to use "Threat Expert" the same way I use "Virus Total"; to analyze program files right after downloading them, to make sure that I may use them without any harm.

Gravatar To TeMerc: The glitches with Threat Expert are two fold. Am unable to get their menu to open fully, and while doing the scan, the computer hangs (even granting half an hour to complete), Mimndblower!

Gravatar I think I have it figured out. After my last post, I didn't check the Notify box annnd I didn't get notified! Just and fyi for whoever..
