As a control 'freak', I like to track daily movements on my Hard Drives.
So, despite much searching, I'm still hoping to find
a program to check all file/folder changes, under both Vista and XP, on a daily basis. Yonks ago there was a great DOS program - "FFG" - which worked admirably.

I'm trying to find a program that will allow me to change the color of the desktop icons text. 'white' is getting really boring. What I found on Google seems to go toward really complicated steps at least for me.
Thanks,
Chet

For Chet - Try Hook99 (you can find by using Google), download it, install and change your icon text colors. It can do a few other things as well and is freeware.

I am looking for the registry tweak that will allow more than 79 characters (default) in the "COMMENTS" column of a folder view.
Any idea will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the great newsletter.

@Michael Harding:

I am looking for a preferably free screen capture software that also is capable of dealing with transparent background free hand selections...

Hi Øyvind Granberg
My most recent newsletter mentions PicPick. It supports both transparency and free hand selections.
It's also portable.

THANKS VAL
I tried hook99 and it does a lot of things but I couldn't find where it changed icon text colors and that was all I really needed.

Thanks, Clif, but 'Filemon' and, for that matter, 'Regmon' have both been replaced - as far as Vista is concerned - by 'Process Monitor' which tends to be somewhat frustrating to use.
'Tiny Watcher' tracks some changes in the Windows folder but only goes part way to meeting my need.
Cheers
Michael

Hi Cliff...
PicPick just didn't cut it, so to speak, like PtrScr did. Just what I needed when capturing freehand and wanting a transparent background.
You'll find it at www.fiastarta.com
And it's free.

Attn Michael Harding:
Just ran across this system monitor and remembered that you are a Control Freak.
Check this out ...

Plenty there to satisfy the most desperate control freaks.

Thanks, Clif, for this reference item which I've downloaded, installed and virus scanned. However, attempts to start both the Registry Monitor and System monitor produced 'Error: Could not start MMPSY', whatever that is so I'm still at square 1 in my quest.
Other Respendence programs, referred to in yesterday's Infopackets Newsletter, look interesting and potentially useful.
All the best to you and yours.

Has anyone tried both Yugma and Crossloop? I'm looking for a free yet stable program to help me help my daughters with their computers. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Hi Peg,
I don't think you'll find any problems using either. I have tried both but don't recall to many details.
Just to make it more difficult to choose, don't forget there are lots of others offing the same services. Most have free offerings.
To make it easier, just pick one and try it. If it's free, you won't lose anything.
Here are a three lists that popped inot my google search:

Hi Michael, sorry that MMPSY wasn't working for you.
Let us know what you finally do decide to use. I'm sure other control freaks out there will want to know.
best wishes

Is there a freeware that counts letters? I don't text from my phone but my daughter prefers I email/text her at work instead of calling. I know I need to keep it to 160 letters, but don't want to count letters when I'm not sure.
Thanks
