Need a free partition copier like the Acronis tool without all the useless bells and whistles.

Hi Grommet.
The site linked below was recommended to me as a good list of free backup tools. I've looked it over and I agree.

Has anyone taken "Outlook Express" and improved on it, for some reason I like it. Perhaps some additional features?? James

Hello Cliff;
I enjoy your Cliff notes and i hope you keep up the good work. Now, is there any free software to convert VHS to DVD. The software that came with this cameramate is garbage.
Thanks

Ken, If you're sure you want to format your USB drive, open Computer or My Computer, depending on your Windows operating system.
Right Click on the Drive in question, click Format and hope for the best.

There are several free USB drive repair and reformat utilites on the net. Check Download.com, The Elder Geek, etc. I have used several and they all did the job well.

Thanks for a great newsletter!!
I need something that does a word count. I publish a church bulletin once per week and need to know the size of the articles available for the bulletin so I can ensure they fit the space available. The space available is different every week because of announcements and such. MS Word has a word count feature but it can't be used with other software. A stand alone application would work much better.
Thanks...

Microsoft has improved Outlook Express in their newest version of Windows Mail. They improved it by removing the Source View so that you can't edit HTML mail anymore.
So ... the answer is no. Nobody has improved it. Sorry ... I recommend a switch to Thunderbird.

If you have the right hardware to capture the VHS to a file, you can use one of the free DVD authoring tools here:

I'm looking for a free defrag program that will do the job, then turn my computer off. Is there any that will do that?
Thanks

Hi Peg,
I Googled it. Search terms "defrag and shutdown".
This search result seems to work on my XP Pro machine.

I need a way to permanently adjust (usually increase) the audio volume on some saved video clips. Of course, this can be done on a temporary basis via the volume control, but it's annoying to have to do it this way. The clips are in the FLV, AVI and WMV formats.

I recently needed to do this myself. I had good luck with virtualdub which I found here. http://www.snapfiles.com/
reviews...virtualdub.html
I did have one strange thing happen. When I saved back to AVI, what I got looked like it had a strong blue cast to the video using Media Player Classic but it didn't have it before I worked on the file. This, however, didn't show up in VLCPlayer and burned to DVD with no problems. Still don't know what caused it. This happened with all 3 files that I was working on.

Great tip Peg. If anyone wants to avoid having to normalize the volumn of vidoes, you can use MPC (media player classic) to play them.
It performs on-the-fly normalization of all videos in the playlist.

I also recommend the use of the K-Lite Codec pack which includes MPC as part of the package.Using these codecs helps insure you can play nearly any type of movie or audio file.

Best wishes to all ...

Thanks PegM. I tried VirturalDub and it adjusted the audio nicely, but the video bit rate increased so the file is almost twice as large as it was. However, I only spent about 15 minutes doing it so I've still got a lot of learning to do.

I'm sorry, I had forgotten all about that. I don't remember the settings I used, but I found them at youtube doing a search for 'virtualdub tutorials' Someone was showing how to set it up so the output file wasn't so huge.
