Obviously the use of thumb drives is now the popular choice to transport files. Because of their relatively small size, my concern is the potential of losing a thumb drive (or getting it stolen) and then being vulnerable because of the content on the thumbdrive.
What free programs are available that require a password to be entered to view the contents of the thumb drive? I am looking for a program that installs on the thumb drive (not the hard drive of my PC) because I am using my thumb drive on various PCs. Also looking for a program that is small so that it does not take up a lot of room on the thumb drive.
Thanks.

Hi PG,
I seem to recall looking into that once. I had trouble finding any portable softwares that would "Lock" the USB drive.
The programs that did work had to be installed on the host machine.
However, I have seen USB drives that are made to be lockable. You may have to pay extra for that.

how about if the thumb drive was partitioned... is there a software program that locks a partition? I remember seeing something like this too (a few years ago)...

Hi...
When I purchased my "Prolific" USB 2 pen sticks they came complete with a disc, on this is a utility ( CheckPwd . exe ) which allows me to make them password protected. As soon as I put them into any PC a pop-up window opens; asking me for my password. I have since disabled this as it was a pain when using them at home especially when I forget to remove them after I powered down my PC.

TrueCrypt is very good, but as far as I know it does need to be installed on a PC.
See this thread at portable freeware which talks about using it:
http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=199
You can use it only after a system administrator installs TrueCrypt on the system ...
Try taking your USB drive to a buddy's PC and using it. You'll have to install TrueCrypt on the machine before you can open your USB drive.

In trying to back up files to my Gdrive, I keep getting an error message saying file names are too long. I was told some backup programs automatically shorten file names. I have Acronis 9, but can't find where it does this. Is there any freeware program that will do it?

Hi PegM
What is your Gdrive?
If it's an external drive or another hard drive, you may have to reformat it using an NTFS file system.
My guess is that it's using an older file system.

I have a group of photos that I need to label with the same first name and a number afterwards. All of them have different names on them.
Is there any free type programs that would let me rename these photo's with the same name and sequential numbers out there?
Thanks. Jerry

Hi Jerry,
There are at least a dozen free renaming tools out there that will let you do that.
Here's the last one I tried.
http://freewarewiki.com/BulkRename
Here are a few more:

Hi Jerry - You don't really need 3rd party software to do that, provided you are running Windows XP or Vista:
First off, sort all the photos in the folder into the correct order. Now click on the 'Ctrl' and 'A' keys simultaneously (that will select all). Then right click on the first photo and select 'rename'...now type in the new name followed by the number 01 in parenthesis...e.g. (01). Now just click any blank space and all photos will be identically renamed with consecutive numbers.

That's a neat trick Jimbo. I'd heard of it before but I've never had to use it.
Thanks for the tip.

Hi PG,
I use EncryptOnClick
http://www.2brightsparks.com/
dow...s.html#freeware
EncryptOnClick is a simple to use file encryption and decryption utility. It uses 256-bit AES encryption and compression that is compatible with WinZip 9 and other modern compression utilities. [scroll down for more details]
To use EncryptOnClick on a USB key (with Windows XP or better) simply copy the following files from the program directory (after installing it) to the USB device:
· EncryptOnClick.exe
· EncryptOnClick.exe.manifest
· XceedZip.dll
Hope this helps.
