I record lectures for disabled students and use a hard disc/DVD recorder timed to record about 8 lectures a week then burn them to DVD. I'd like to use a PC as a video recorder. I need to be able to set dates and times for recording from the camera. I don't have Media Centre or a TV card and presume there is no line in option anyway.[I could use a modulator]. Having the computer in another room would be best so long leads or wireless would be good.
Connecting the camera via firewire onto Windows Movie Maker works great but it's just timing software that I need.
Any ideas?

Is there a freeware wirless networking program that will let a persone network 2 laptop's and share a usb mobile broardban (next G) modem in VISTA I have all but no hair left trying to get them to talk together it will work sometimes and others it will not I just want to be able to share files and the modem with the wife's laptop, I did get to share the modem at one stage and it worked great but couldn't share her hard drive permission denied, (have set all the share things) and now I find that I can access some of her drive (not all) and now cannot share the modem??? this all happened by itself after I gave up on trying the share of files and the lack of share of the modem that is.
By the way it was an Ad-Hoc private connection I was trying to setup.
Boy I wish these 2 laptops came with XP it was so easy to do.

Forget it, oldfart. It just can't be done. I spent days and days trying all kinds of suggestions and for some weird reason I could get networking to function with one laptop, but it just wouldn't work on a second with exactly the same software setup. Somehow an MS operating system just decides for itself if it feels like allowing you to connect one day but not the next. That's the only explanation that seems to fit!

Do you know of any software where I can make "wanted Poster" for fun or to use as invitations?? Thanks

Hi James - I am assuming you are seeking FREEware?
The best known is 'Poster Forge'...although it does have some limitations. It will not print to a single sheet of paper (A4), you have to print out across multiple pages then assemble them into a full size movie poster:
http://www.ronyasoft.com/product...s/poster-forge/
If you wish to print to A4, one online solution I tried (just for you!) seems to work okay. You can upload a photo, insert a name and amount of the reward and then just hit the 'make wanted poster' button. You can then 'save' the resulting poster to your hard drive (right click and select 'save image as') and print from there.
The test poster I printed to A4 sheet came out quite well. Here is a link to the site:

James - Sorry, I forgot to mention...you can add a personalized 'crime' to the online poster too by typing into the 'Wanted For' dialogue box.

Hi Clif,
I thought i could export to .mp3 with Audacity but even with the lame file it doesn't.
Can you recommend a freeware that can export from .wav to .mp3 ?
Much obliged!
-Daniel
p.s. compliments on your revamped wiki!

Hi Daniel
I've used Audacity to create MP3 files before. Have you tried this to set it up for MP3?

Exactly!
Hey, believe it or not Clif, i've re-installed my notebook twice over the last month. Twice i've loaded latest Audacity beta with most recent Lame file to go with it and twice it doesn't seem to recognize the file that is sitting there in the proper plugins section, excuse the expression, but truly a "lame" duck!
I can't figure it out.
I've used Audacity many times in the past and it always seemed to work well in that area.

Here's the message i get when trying to export to mp3 after it clearly shows me the lame file sitting in the plugins section where it's supposed to be:
"could not open mp3 encoding library"

Daniel - I think maybe the clue is in the 'Tech Tips' guide's first instruction:
"1. Download the latest stable version of Audacity to your desktop."
You say you are using the 'beta' version....have you tried the same thing using the latest stable version?
cheers...JIMBO

Jimbo,
The beta version has been around for quite some time but yes, i did give the stable version a spin and still couldn't convert to .mp3.
I can convert to .wav but then that requires extract steps.

Hi James - Okay, you said in an earlier post that you have the Lame files "sitting there in the proper plugins section". Those are not the instructions for installing Lame with Audacity.
This is what I do; download and save the Lame zip file to 'My Documents' then extract the files to the same location.
Now after selecting the 'Export as MP3' option, Audacity will ask where the lame_enc.dll is saved...just point it to the file in 'My Documents'. It is a slightly different process in the beta version...please read here:

ind...ws_Instructions
Scroll down to 'Windows Instructions'.

Jimbo,
I give up.
I've never had this problem with Audacity before.
I won a copy of Media Monkey this year at CybernetNews and it looks like it can convert .wav to .mp3
Problem solved.

Hi Jimbo,
James? That's okay. As long as people don't call me late for supper.
Were you out celebrating Saint Paddy's day yesterday?
Ya, i discovered that option in MediaMonkey which i hadn't been really using yet. Had hoped to win other prizes... but this was a pleasant surprise.

My computer uploads data silently. I would like to know what has been uploaded.
Is there anyway of monitoring what was uploaded?

Gerald, that doesn't sound too good.
Beware of Conficker attack.

Get a good firewall/antivirus like NOD32 which i have found to be very light on ressources.
You'll probably need to do a spyware scan. Iobit.com has a good free one.

Your computer uploads data silently? Yes, most do. It's not usually a bad thing. Daniel offered good advice.
It's also a good idea to have a two-way firewall that let's you know when new programs want to connect to the net.
If you really need to see the outgoing traffic from your PC to the net, you could try EtherSnoop or one of the similar applications on this page:

Thanks for advice. I tried PRTG network , but that was too complicated , so I deleted same. During the night my computer may silently upload up to 30 mg of data! Can you recommend a two way firewall?
Thanks. I use Avast and Threatfire.
