Lewis Gordon argues that while race is a fiction in terms of biology, it is very much a real category socially and experientially, phenomenologically, by simple virtue of people's intersubjective experiences of it. From one perspective the category of it keeps transcending changing biological facts, like mixing, and always has.
Cool blog!

Great piece, something I strongly agree with. While the idea of a mixed race identity can undermine racism. It can also be used to replicate racism.
I was going write a very similar piece in response to a few multiracial activists who are pissed at me.
You also brig up a few interesting points here, "Or is multiracial only confined to first generation mixtures? If so, why? Blackness is, after all, especially in this country, a category of mixture." There is a term for the mixture of cultures that has become African American culture--creolization.
Anyways, I'm going to link to your blog, when I do my bunch-o-links.

Great post! I'm so glad you wrote this, because you're absolutely right that "as new racial categories become apparent, new hierarchies of power, beauty, and acceptance are being constructed."
I often hear folks in the mixed race community/movement talking about the ways in which they are not accepted by communities, in which they have their legitimacy or authenticity questioned, etc. All of those are valid concerns.
However, I'd like to see more people talk about the privilege that comes with being mixed - particularly if you're part white. That's what people are not comfortable admitting to themselves yet.
Keep up the great work!

Good luck. I agree that multiracial categories can be used to reinforce racism; it's just a new term for the old ones, that can be used to privlege some of the group ahead of others.
But, I don't think society is going to stop looking to assign race any sooner than it's going to stop looking to assign gender.

hello...do you know these facts about JESUS????????????????
HADRAD EISA (HIS NAME IS CHRIST IN THE GREEK LANGUAGE) THE SON OF MARYAM
Eisa is one of Messengers who is stated in Qur'an and Allah (The Only One Almighty, The proper name of Our Creator) had sent him as the Last Prophet to Children of Israel. Jesus is a latinized name. His real name is EISA. His birth date can be 300-400 years B.C. His miracles related to being medical doctor is majority. But at the beginning of birth of Christ, being doctor had not been favorite so much. In addition, according to Taurat and Gospels, all dates between 400-0 years always is skipped. There were very great events in this period. He is not Jewish and Christian. He is a Muslim. He is The Messiah. Messiah is not savior. It is stated in the Qur'an: "The Messiah ['Eisa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary), was no more than a Messenger; many were the Messengers that passed away before him. His mother [Maryam (Mary)] was a Siddiqah [i.e. she believed in the words of Allah and His Books (see Verse 66:12)]. They both used to eat food (as any other human being, while Allah does not eat). Look how We make the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, revelations, etc.) clear to them, yet look how they are deluded away (from the truth)." (Al-Maeda; 75)
"And Allah will teach him (Prophet Eisa) the Book and Wisdom, the Law (Taurat) and the Injeel, (Aal- E-Imran, 4
He is not Word. He is the one of commands of word be. He is not The Truth. He is the one of truths of Allah jalla jalaluh. He is about to Truth. Allah is Haqq (The Truth). Hadrad Eisa and His apostles (They are not apostles of Allah) were speaking Syriac which is one of dialect of Aramiac. But this dialect is different in Syria. Palestinian people were so foreigner to Hellen language so that Roman general Titus felt to got his speech translated when he wanted to speak to people of Jerusalem in A.C 70. In greek Pericletus word means Munhamanna in Syriac. Munhamanna means Muhammad in Arabic. But Christian schoolars have changed Pericletus in Yohannes Bible and took place paracletus word. Hadrad Eisa, had given Glad Tiding of Messenger to come after himself, whose name shall be Ahmed (The nice name of Muhammad (pbuh)). You can see about Hadrad Muhammad (pbuh) parts of Evangelium Barnabe:72, 83, 96, 97, 124. All Christians must know this Glad Tidings of Messenger, believe Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), obey and follow him. It is stated "And remember, Eisa (Jesus), the son of Mary, said: "O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allah (sent) to you, confirming the Law (which came) before me, and giving Glad Tiding of Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmed." But when he came to them with Clear Signs, they said, this is evident sorcery. ″(Qur'an, As-Saff, 6)
Allah revealed Hadrad Muhammad (pbuh) and it is stated English Translation of the meaning of the Holy Qur'an: O people of the Book! There hath come to you our Messenger (Proph

Very good,
Actually, you touched on several issues that I have been talking about for years. My blog is devoted to racial issues in a comparative analysis between Afro-Brazilians and African-Americans.
In a nutshell, I reject the so-called "multiracial" movement because of its objectives. It seems to have evolved from a group of white women who want to share a bit of their whiteness and privilege upon their "mixed race" children. I have friends who have children with white women and many of these women clearly want to give their "mixed" kids and advantage over the "regular" black kids, which shows the racist nature of the "multiracial" movement in itself.
Instead of these white women speaking for all non-white children, they seek to give their non-white kids a step over others by injecting aa bit of their whiteness into the argument.
I have asked, since most African-Americans are "mixed race" by default, how would the "multiracial" movement react if the majority of African-Americans started identifying as "mixed race"?
My key point here is: If race does not exist, then "mixed race" also does not exist. "Mixed race" also does not erase racism as the Brazilian example clearly shows.
Sidestepping race with another category does not solve the problem if it does not upset the racial hierarchy.
