Thanks for this great analysis. I'm one of the regular (proudly liberal) bloggers at Ecotality and I think you've summarized this whole thing beautifully.
This is my first visit to your blog, it's impressive and I'll make this one of my regular stops now. Keep up the good work.

wingnuts, not happy unless they are on the attack.
i just heard there is a conservapedia to counter the presumably "liberal bent" of wikipedia. lovely, when facts don't fit your opinion just make up your own facts. facts are stupid things.

I hope Mr. Gore gets his variance, you have to believe that the degree of press this is getting would make it almost impossible for him to not get the variance.
The bigger point is not that Mr. Gore is getting solar panels, it's that his house is so inefficient to begin with. He'll need almost half an acre of photovoltaic cells to go off-grid because his house is apparently not very efficient.
He's been browbeaten into (or more likely, had previously wanted to as you say) putting up a green power source, but his money would be better spent insulating and rebuilding his home to just conserve more energy. He can spend a million dollars and go off-grid, or he can spend half that in energy efficiency upgrades AND solar power and get to the same point.

This type of code restrictions are a serious obstacle to moving toward a more sensible distributed power system. How much money, do we think, has Gore spent on lawyers, contractor time, etc to try to get a variance to be able to put in solar panels?
Good story.

It was my impression that his renovations also encompassed energy efficiency. It's unfathomable for me how much he consumes, but then again I live in a tiny 4th-floor walkup and I don't have two businesses to run and a security detail around me 24-7.
All others: thanx for the useful links. I'm a bit busy this weekend, so I'll check them out ASAP.
