hahaha..we have apple stores all over the place here now, and i'm always afraid of going in to them, because i KNOW i'll walk out with sometning-last time it was with a Nano! 
he he. You hardly got time to even listen to your ipod and now you buy something to add on to something you hardly listen to. he he.
The reason (so I read) that Apple do not have AM/FM function is because they didn't want to have a conflict of interest to their itunes. They are afraid people may not buy songs.
So I think the ear piece is likely for the rest of the world without the itunes or it may be something invented by third party vendor.
Everyone is making something to be compatible with ipod.
