Gravatar Nice meme. Here's my list.

I'm with you on most of these, but I've got to take exception with you on the Les Mis soundtrack. I know, I know-- it's one of the most popular musicals ever. And hey, it's a GREAT story. But I just don't like the Broadway adaptation of the story.

For one thing, I've never seen it when it wasn't done with a uniformly British accent affectation-- Cockney, at that-- in spite of the fact that it is set in France. That never made sense to me, and it's a hallmark of poor direction.

Worse, though-- the music makes my teeth hurt. It has a catchiness to it-- but not in a good way. More like an, "I can't get that stupid song out of my head" sort of catchiness. "Master of the Feast" is the worst about that.

But worst of all: it's always done with a melodramatic, almost high-school-musical over-intensity. That works in the Hammond Gymnatorium, but it's annoying when I'm paying $75 a ticket.

Show me a performance that is toned-down, done with either a French accent or non at all, and music that isn't so repetitive in theme and that uses more than about 8 notes-- then maybe I'll like this musical more.

[/end rant]
