For technical accuracy, the glass object should cast opaque shadows. The Glass shader should have transparent shadows unticked.
The caustic photons will take care of the light passing though the glass and the amount of light added by the photons will be exactly the amount that passes through the teapot area - minus reflected and absorbed light.
