Apparently there is going to be a battle of the Veep's wives. After Lynn Cheney, Elizabeth Edwards decided to speak up and had THIS to say:

"She's overreacted to this and treated it as if it's shameful to have this discussion. I think that's a very sad state of affairs… I think that it indicates a certain degree of shame with respect to her daughter's sexual preferences… It makes me really sad that that's Lynne's response."

"an earned-legalization program for people who have been here for a long time, stayed out of trouble, got a job, paid their taxes, and their kids are American."

(What..... he can't just say the word "AMNESTY"?)

Well, seeing as how they came here illegally, how do we know:
- how long they have been here,
- that they have had a job,
and
- that they have paid their taxes?

And just exactly what taxes is he talking about? Sales taxes - something any VISITOR from another country has to pay? Income and Social Security taxes?

Its easy enough to prove that their kids are American, all that takes is a birth certificate, but getting that is easy - pregnant women can just cross the border, have their baby and then go back home to Mexico. They don't have to actually LIVE here after the baby is born.

One last thing. Not everyone thinks Shieffer was such a great moderator. Here is one such opinion.

I thought he was "so so", far better than Lehrer.

Gravatar Tom,

Thanks for the post. I was only able to watch the last half hour of the debate. So, I'm glad you were able to give us some of the highlights.

As for being worried about this election. It's hard not to be considering that this nation is very divided and the Left is willing to cheat its way to victory.

I have been writing since January of this year that this election will end up being a re-run of the 1988 campaign between Dukakis and Bush. My gut still tells me that this is true. But obviously some things have changed since 1988.

For one, the 8 year presidency of Bill Clinton has wiped away some, though not all, of the fear of a Democrat presidency among middle class, middle of the road voters. Since Jimmy Carter was a disaster and Lyndon Johnson is disliked by both the Left and the Right (for different reasons), the Democrats benefit from having the Clinton presidency as an example of "peace and prosperity." Though I don't believe Clinton himself deserves much credit for this, many "mushy-middle" voters do.

Overall, I still believe that Bush wins this election. But this election seems to me to be close enough that I will be volunteering my time to the Bush-Cheney campaign as if they were a couple of points behind.

Gravatar Tom,

Again, great post. I had to once again watch a taped version of the debate.

I thought Kerry's invoking Cheney's daughter's sexuality and speaking on her behalf was very creepy. But it was also very typical of the "anything goes" campaign blitz the Dems are now pomoting.

Kerry: "And what I would like to do is see the National Guard and Reserve be deployed differently here in our own country. There's much we can do with them with respect to homeland security. We ought to be doing that. And that would relieve an enormous amount of pressure."...Sounds like he'd rather go into the defensive mode (circle the wagons) rather than fighting on the enemies turf.

Gravatar Check out my latest post on the Mary Cheney incident. Why do John Kerry and John Edwards have to mention the Vice President's daughter's sexuality in order to discuss gay marriage?
