Nice post Jack. You've probably seen Errol Morris' "The Fog of War" but, if not you must. I knew little of McNamara before it and found it engrossing. I hit puberty during the Ford administration, so I don't have much recollection of Vietnam's contemporary impact in America, but it seems that the villification was more immediate and visceral than the current war. This will be a story of anger deferred, I'm afraid.

Judgement day is coming
They might not like what it’s gonna say
Judgement day is coming
The holy hypocrites are gonna pay
So they claim there’s only one way to salvation
Yet there’s many many lights within the nations
You know the Prince of Peace would never sanctify the bloodshed
Nor ever take from the hungry for the well fed
We’re crying out to our institutions
But they’re bought and paid with corrupt contributions
Some praise the flag yet burn the Constitution
While democracy’s in danger of total ruin
Torture in the name of the free, more misery for you and me
They ship ‘em out so we can’t see the way they bring ‘em to their knees
Keep you eyes glued to the news, a woman may not have the right to choose
Prayer in school? Pray to whom? Buddha? Krishna? Or Reverend Moon?
Drink the kool aid, close your eyes, everything’s gonna be alright
Holy smoke screen, gimme the green, no paper trail in the voting machines
When it comes to War leave My child behind
Your word’s no longer worth a dime
How many lies, how many cries, how many lives per gallon?
Judgement day is coming
They might not like what it’s gonna say
Judgement day is coming
The holy hypocrites are gonna pay

With apologies to Country Joe:
...so it's one, two, three, what the heck are we fighting for.
Don't ask me I don't know jack,
I'm redeploying to Iraq,
And it's five, six, seven,
open up them pearly gates,
Ain't no time to wonder why,
(whoopee) I'm gonna die...

Fantasctic article. A friend passed me some exerpts from "Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream."
There are enough similarities to boggle the mind.
