My friend is a teacher and she said the ABC song is what they call "Jollyphonics" =) It's true though, I remember Kevin Bloody Wilson lyrics far better than any lines of Shakespeare ;)
So, I expect we'll be having a guest posting by D himself one day soon, huh?
Cool as :)

So true about reading readiness. And it can happen very quickly. Suddenly they're ready. All you can do is wait for it. Like singing in tune. :)

Lever - Yes. The whole phonics vs 'whole language' thing is interesting (and how the ABC sing fits with that...) Guest posts, possibly, but not quite yet.
Julie - I hadn't thought of there being a kind of 'singing-readiness' moment - either they've got it or they don't until I read your blog post. There is hope then? D cannot sing a tune at all. No idea of pitch. Just drones along at a monotone, but occasionally breaks into a few notes of actual singing. I can't wait.

I don't remember learning to read, but one of my earliest memories is reading a book out loud to my mom and reading ... as dot, dot, dot. It made her laugh. It's one of my favorite memories! Reading and moms are the best. :)

mrsd, I don't remember learning to read either, but my mum said to me the other day that she thought I couldn't really read until I went to school, unlike my younger sister who learned at pre-school. I don't have many early reading memories, but I loved reading as a child (I still do, and I read quite a bit). I have photos of me reading as an older child.
