I really dislike swoopy birds. I won't even go into pet stores because often they're loose inside.

Yep, that is the one bad thing about magpies here, if you have any Hitchcock-style phobia, they are not the bird for you...however, they are singing outside the kitchen window right now, so I find it hard to fault them.
