my grandparents went to greece... probably about 25 years ago or so - they said it was a filthy disgusting horrible place
seriously pretty much ALL my grandmother could talk about for weeks after they got home was how filthy it was there - and if I recall she also said the greek people were rude and unpleasant
they traveled A LOT (like you guys) and she never had such miserable things to say as she did about their trip to greece
I don't think she enjoyed it hehehe
anyway - that runner made out of windshields is pretty weird!! I like it!! hehehe that's the kind of stuff I want to travel around THIS country to see

You look good in that pic. A little pale though. I recommend a little more sun.

I loved the video; I can pretend I'm there while not having to deal with flying! YAY!

kitty, I didn't notice Athens being particularly dirty, I can't speak to the condition of the rest of the country. But I have learned over the years not to (or try not to) judge other cultures by our North American standards. After all, if you want things to be the same as at home...stay there. LOL!
I'm not *not* understanding your grandparent's POV at all; some of the things we've seen have just made me shake my head and wonder 'what's wrong with these people?' But then I figure that they have been doing things their way for a looong time thank you very much so maybe they know something I don't know, and there's more than one way into the castle.
Brian, don't you like my Kabuki look? I might add eyes and lips just for you later on today.
Amber, I'm so glad you liked the video. I was seriously pissed at our driver for taking us to the back of the building for the changing of the guard where we had to watch from across the road in order to see properly and contend with all that frigging traffic noise! bah!

well they traveled all over the world - Greece was the only place she complained about the cleanliness of
I don't think she wanted it to be the same as home - I just think she wanted it to be sanitary... or at least give the illusion of being sanitary
I don't care how far back civilization can be traced on your land... or how long you've been doing things - unsanitary is unsanitary hehehe
once upon a time people drank from lead cups too... just because they did it for a long time doesn't mean it was safe, ya know?
I'm all for not judging people's dirty habits and whatnot - as long as they don't compromise MY health - she felt like her health was at risk because of the filth
but like I said that was at least 25 years ago... maybe they've jumped into the 20th century since then hehehe
anyway... the guy with the pom poms is freaking me out!!

I've begged and begged on cruise critic for fellow travelers to speak up and come on our great excursion, but no takers. Of course, it's a redneck riviera cruise in SE USA (to mexico, oh, excuse me.. western carribean. whatever!)

kitty, well I see HaloScan ate my comment from the other day. grrrrr! ...after lying to me about posting it of course.
I think I said something about parts of the States and Canada still being pretty primitive and behind the times when it comes to sanitation. Perhaps things have improved in the U.S. but many of our Aboriginal people are still living in appalling conditions that would fit our images of third world poverty uncomfortably well. So when people are poor, and I'm just speculating, I don't know what the story was when your Gp's were in Greece, then I guess survival is their main concern. But again, I'm just guessing. And we didn't get to interact very much with the locals other than our driver and the waiters in the restaurant we had lunch at. The ticket sellers and guards at the various sites were pretty abrupt but they mostly didn't speak English so who knows what they were saying?
Daisy, I don't think cruise critic is too useful for the cruises that repeat frequently ie. the Caribbean, Mexico etc. Although Laura and her bf did try Roll Call for their recent trip to the Caribbean and got some good ideas for excursions. I've found CC most useful for the longer trips and especially the more exotic ports.

wellllllll they weren't staying with the locals, they were staying in hotels and eating in restaurants - if the hotels and restaurants are 'poor' then they shouldn't advertise them as hotels and restaurants - they should call them... hostels and soup kitchens or something hehehe
and you're right, there are parts of the US that are pretty backwoods-y or third world-ish - but people don't general spend thousands of dollars traveling to visit those places, ya know?
I wasn't there so I really can't say... all I know is that out of ALL the traveling my grandparents did, Greece was the one place that my grandmother said she'd never go again
I don't plan on ever going there (or any place else for that matter) so it makes no difference to me other than the usual wishing people didn't live in filth - but I wish/hope that for all people, not just the greek hehehe
now can we forget about filth and talk about something import? greek salad... stuffed grape leaves...souvlaki... spanakopita!!

I swear I was the first one here the other day and I left a comment...stupid Haloscan. I can't even remember what I said but I'm sure it was brilliant
I think I asked you to come with me if I ever get to travel somewhere...we'd be great together...I love history and I want to see *everything*...I mean what's the point of going if you don't see everything.
Looking at your pictures what I found interesting was the dichotomy(I think that's the correct word)of these ages old ruins and the modern day equipment i.e. the huge cranes, the metal scaffolding. I think if I had traveled all that way and the Parthenon was ensconced in metal scaffolding I'd be a bit disappointed. And I understand they're trying to preserve it and they have to do it sometime and when is a good time? But I'd want to see it without all the stuff, y'know? Just me.
As always, I love that you share your trips with us. Deep down within me is a wanderlust...but who knows if or when I'll get to indulge it?

Mimi, I know that HaloScan has been having 'issues' lately and doing some very strange things. *g* I'm just happy to see you commenting...I've been worried about you and meaning to email you and catch up. My bad.
I think I told you before - I'll travel with you as soon as you're ready. How old are your kids again? hehe
kitty, you're right. We've talked it to death already! Allan and I shared some sort of mixed grill for lunch...it had all kinds of weird and wonderful things on the plate and I don't remember the name of any of them! *g*
