Gravatar I'm thankful that upon rereading the phrase "shooing short people" didn't say SHOOTING short people" as I first read it... Mercy time for an eye exam. Wendy

Gravatar Funny, I thought it said "shooting" too! I know I need glasses.

Since Thanksgiving tends to be a time of not only thinking of the here and now, but also the there and then, I will share a memory from my only Thanksgiving in Washington.

It was back maybe 20 years ago. The weather was really terrible, some bridges were under water and power went out throughout the city. We were staying at a home where they had a wood stove, so they just moved the turkey and such to it and finished the cooking there. There was a Safeway nearby where the alarm had gone off...maybe because of the power outage, that kept ringing for hours. We had our dinner by candlelight, which was delightful.

In the news the next day it was said that many turkeys remained raw, but there were plenty of people who employed ingenuity. My favorite: those who dug pits in their back yards, and turned them into underground ovens.

It remains a sweet, standout-in-my-memory day. I was thankful for the wood stove then, and thankful for the memory now; it is a good reminder of how if people use the brains God gave them, they can get on in spite of tough circumstances. A good reminder.

Happy Thanksgiving (umm...AND Reformation Day AND Christmas), Carla...and all of the Canadians who read this!

Gravatar Becky, if memory serves, that was Thanksgiving Day 1984? (I don't recall another Thanksgiving where that happened, anyway).

HUGE storm that day, and just about everyone lost power all over western WA. I had dinner with some friends, and the mom had just taken the turkey out when the power went out. Everything else was done already, so we ate by candle light.

It stands out as a sweet memory for me too. Both the mom and the dad have since passed away, and they were some very wonderful people.

Oh, and I never shoot short people, in my kitchen or anywhere else (unless its with a nerf dart gun, then all bets are off).

Gravatar That date sounds right. Umm...that is 26 years ago! Time flies, as they say. One of my favorite souvenirs from that trip was the book, Weedle on the Needle, which we got for our son. Oh, and a bright yellow metal dustpan that I still use, even though the lip is too thick to be efficient. I am all about aesthetics, apparently. I will have to take a picture and post it on my blog.

Gravatar We have our extended family dinner on Saturday this year as well. It's a collaborative effort, so I only have a few things to prepare. But on Monday I'm making a turkey dinner here for the local nuclear family. Among other things, I am thankful for loved ones to cook for and for food to cook for them!
