There are very few in the world who actually UNDERSTAND anything. They just feel things. They felt entertained by Irwin, so they felt angry about stingrays when he died.
These people are the rule, not the exception. And that's a sad thing.

Knowing Steve, he would have forgiven the stingray in his final few seconds as he managed to pull off that barb stuck into his heart.
And knowing him, he would condemn these jokers for doing exactly the opposite of what he stood for.

I live in Australia and heard a debate on this subject just this past week on a daytime call-in radio show. One person reported, and the radio show host agreed that much of the reports on stingray attacks, mutilations and killings were in places that had previous reports of such disturbances. Also, people were calling in with stingray recipes. I don't know what to think of all of it, whether the reports are indeed escalating or if it is just a matter of media reporting on things that they've never touched before because the subject is of timely interest.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that mutilating and torturing stringrays is the only way to get them to rat out which one of those slimy bastards killed Steve Irwin. We can't send 100,000 soldiers into the ocean looking for a single barbless stingray. Those are sovereign waters. We'd need to be invited into them. This is Aussies killing Aussie stingrays. We're not in the water over there, but my Generals tell me this is not a Civil War. Now if somebody in my administration is responsible for any water leaking, we're going to get to the bottom of it and that person will be taken care of.

Well, a lot of well-intentioned people also swim with dolphins and pass along their respiratory problems to them, if not worse diseases.
You can love wild things to death. And you can encourage incredibly stupid behavior by jumping in and mixing it up with animals as if that's what they are there for. And how much of that do you see on the Discovery Channel and other networks that sniff at real science and then take the plunge toward whatever's entertaining, science be damned, because the show must go on, and it must score in the ratings?

I always admired Irwin's passion for conservation and nature, but he had two very bad lapses in good judgement that I know of. When you're dealing with large, wild, and potentially deadly animals, you're never in "complete control", not matter how much experience you've got under your belt.

I really can't understand the massive grief over Irwin. Frankly, he was entertaining, but thick as a brick. A bad advertisement for ADD. I think I get the convergence of his personality and Aussie goons who, oddly enough, subsume "love of nature" in the Crocodile Dundee persona, when he's really just a poacher. Love of nature = not being scared of crocodiles? Fits in with the macho thing, that way.
Irwin reminds me of the Monty Python sketch where everybody in Australia is named "Bruce."
The ultimate irony is that if he hadn't pulled the barb out, he might have lived. What doomed him was pulling it out, which pulled out a big hunk of heart with it. Now, it was probably hurting him like a monster, but still -- gotta temper that hyperactivity.

If any of you fish in the ocean you all know that you kill skates and stingrays when you catch them. They're a nuisance on the end of a rod and stingrays are more of a nuisance because they sting the shit out of you if they catch you with their barb. Last July I was surf fishing in Hatteras and pulled a good size stingray out of the surf. I would have killed him but I attracted too much attention reeling him in and a crowd of 15 or 20 had gathered. I couldn't leave him on the beach because somebody could have stepped on it or foolishly grabbed him by the tail. I grabbed him by the nose with a pair of pliers and threw him back in. The next wave washed him back onshore. I walked out a little farther in the surf and tried to throw him back in and he doubled back on me and caught me across the back of the wrist. At that point I believe I saw Jesus at the end of the tunnel....the pain was excrutiating. I've passed two kidney stones that I believe were worse, but I don't remember anything else hurting quite so bad and I was in severe pain all night. Had I just stabbed him 4 or 5 time with my filet knife and thrown him in he wouldn't have caused me such a night of grief. When I returned home from the beach I reseached stingrays and they said they almost allways require a visit to the emergency room because of the pain. I found out later from a fishing buddy of mine that if you piss on the sting it takes the pain away. I think I'd rather just kill the bastard and be done with it. It's been two months and I still have a knot as big as the bone on the side of your wrist. Fuck a goddamn stingray and fuck the ray that stung my man Steve. If you all are so sensitive about a stingray, just be glad one didn't sting W or Rove else we would have to spend 300 billion on the war on rays. Detaining innocent skates accused of stinging christian americans....etc...etc...etc

I think all the blather and hero-worship about Steve Irwin is absurd.
He made a career and a fortune out of provoking wild animals. He wasn't the naturalist or a conservationist he pretended to be. He was a cheap showman, no better than the cheesy lion tamers and dog acts on the old Ed Sullivan show.
It's very, very sad that his children no longer have a father, but no one forced him to take unjustifiable risks with dangerous wild animals.
Irwin lost me as a fan a couple of years ago when he was photographed feeding chunks of meat to a big croc while holding his infant son in his arms. What a cheap, idiotic publicity stunt that was.
There is a debate in the Australian media about whether the film of Irwin's death should be shown publicly. 60% of those who answered the survey said they would watch the footage.
Irwin and his audience deserved each other.

2 Videos from Countdown tonight:
1st, Olbermann, Fineman, Turley on Bush Press Conference
Keith Olbermann’s opening story on Countdown tonight. Howard Fineman joins the discussion, and later Jonathan Turley. Turley discusses the point that Bush is trying to rush congress to pass this law quickly so he can retroactively say that the things the CIA did in the past were legal (even though only under current law upon bill passage). Turley points out that the 14 prisoners that are now awaiting trial have now had access to Red Cross and may start talking about how they were tortured. He also points out that Bush has already commited 30 felonies from the eavesdropping program and now torture, which is regarded as one of the worst things that can be approved by a head of state under International Law.
Video at : http://www.truthstream.org/?p=246
Next, A Thanks From Keith Olbermann
Keith said tonight that over 800,000 people have downloaded the video of his Sept 11 Special Comment in addition to thousands of letters, emails and phone calls. He then re-aired the special comment but preceded it with the announcement that legislation that would have allowed admittance into a would be ground zero memorial for free was killed citing a $50 million per year price tag. After the comment, he reminds us that since his comments on Monday we have been told it is ‘unacceptable to think’, even if your the former Secretary of State.

What's more insane than that? A couple days ago, I heard Rush Limbaugh point to the alleged Croc-avengers as a model for U.S. foreign policy! He had been discussing Iran and the hostage crisis. I guess it's not a bad analogy, really. The U.S. did get "stung" by Iran thanks to its support for the Shah. Apparently Limbaugh's answer to that would have been to exterminate all the "stingrays". Pretty tough talk. It's kind of odd though, since Limbaugh's hero Ronny Reagan would have sold bazookas to the "stingrays".

When I first heard this story a few days ago the first thing I thought of was George W. Bush killing small animals. That's no shit, either.
If true, it is not only sad but a pathetic indictment of all mankind and Irwin would be appalled. Man the only animal who kills for revenge or pleasure.
Irwin died the way he lived. We should all be so lucky to go out in such a manner.
His life should be celebrated and the wildlife he protected, cherished and befriended must be defended before we lose them to extinction as if we've not fucked-up this lonely planet enough.

"Can't we all get along?" or "Why can't we get along" or to use Rodney King's exact quote, "People, I just want to say, you know, can we all get along?" is probably the most important question since the dawn of the agricultural age about 10,000 years ago. It's understandable that we don't know the answer, but what's puzzling is that we are not ever seriously asking the question. Perhaps we need to rephrase the question. "Hypothetically speaking, is it possible to promote social circumstances and commonly held understandings that support the broader promotion and application of cooperative and respectful values among the human beings of this planet in such a way that we are not in immediate danger of killing ourselves off."
When we start trying to answer the question about whether we can "get along" with the same energy of a Manhattan Project times the energy devoted to the NASA moon landing, then we will be serious about trying to survive until the next century. As FDR wrote the day before he died: "If civilization is to survive, WE MUST CULTIVATE THE SCIENCE OF HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS -- the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together and work together, in the same world, at peace." Emphasis added.
And for the sake of God peering at the world through all living beings, let's leave the stingrays out of this.

From Obama's new book (I wish he were busy writing legislation instead of books, but that wouldn't get him the press that he craves):
"We Democrats are just, well, confused," Obama writes. He goes on. "Mainly, though, the Democratic Party has become the party of reaction. In reaction to a war that is ill-conceived, we appear suspicious of all military action."
"In reaction to those who proclaim the market can cure all ills, we resist efforts to use market principles to tackle pressing problems. In reaction to religious overreach, we equate tolerance with secularism, and forfeit the moral language that would help infuse our policies with a larger meaning."
It is just a few weeks before midterm elections and Obama is getting attention by bashing Dems. According to him, if we Dems (I guess that means all Dems) "react" against the Iraqi war (a war that is "ill-conceived", not illegal and immoral), then it is bad for the party brand. He makes no mention of the waste in American and Iraqi life, or of the dangers in setting in motion the civil war that is now taking place in that country. If those same Dems don't accept that "market principles", presumably those same principles that have caused a giant whooshing sound of lost jobs and a declining standard of living, then we are resisting efforts to tackle pressing problems. If Dems feel that religious expression belongs in a place other than in public discouse, then we cannot give moral weight to our policies.
I guess that Joe, I mean Obama, who likes nothing so much as the sound of his own words, is gearing up for a 2008 Presidential run. He knows he will lose but it will position him for Hillary to pick him for her number 2. Ah, that will go over big in the red states - Hillary and Obama. If that doesn't fly, then the DLC has plans to back Mayor Bloomberg, the Republican, for an "independent" run for the Presidency:
http://wcbstv.com/topstories/
loc..._258181718.html
This one, too, is sure to be a big hit in the red states.
There is one thing that I'm not confused about. The ruling elite of the Democratic Party, the DLC, doesn't give a damn about who we want to be President.

Such a sad indictment of your narrow-minded mentality. If you could see the work that this man has done over here with enlightening people to the plight of all creatures, you might take that back, but to me it looks like you're just an uneducated slob who sits in his chair without researching what this man has actually done for wildlife in general. Steve not only dealt with reptiles but all species of creatures as well. His love of animals came from his Father who fostered this interest in him, not the almighty dollar as you would have us all believe.
The work he has done at the Australian Zoo & Sanctuary that was setup so that people who came to get a better understanding of our fauna is truly something to experience. he has done nothing but devote his time to saving creatures, not showcasing them in circus acts which you seem to think. Thoughtless comments from people like yourself are as shallow and unresearched as the idiots that think they should kill Stingrays just because one stuck a barb in the poor man. Get a grip and think before you comment next time.

Why are you guys assuming that Australians think they have to kill stingrays to get revenge? I don't think 10 people killing a stingray is representative of the 20.6 million people living in Australia.
Beside, fishers do sometimes kill stingrays when they don't want to bother worrying about their sting. I don't encourage the practice, but finding 10 dead stingrays isn't an uncommon number, and this wouldn't even be news if Steve had not been killed by one two weeks before.

Sadly the fact that this is happening is a testament to the sort of people bereft that Irwin is dead.
I am sure he was a nice bloke lovely family man, but as an Australian I can tell you he was bloody embarrassing. I know people in the US thought he was the quintissential Aussie but he wasn't. His show was not popular in Australia, well not as popular as in the US. A lot of us were offended about the way he dragged wild animals into a hostiile environment and tormented them. The outpouring of grief for his death says more about society's fetish for celebrity than it does about Irwin. Sad really.
George Clooney makes a plea for darfur that is buried and already forgotten but old Steve just goes on and on.
But killing poor old bloody stingrays? Well it just goes to show the sort of people he appealed to

I like Amy's better.
Comparing intelligence to stupidity is oranges/apples.
Not true. Since stupidity and intelligence could be considered movement towards the extremes of a continuum, Amy's saying would suggest, quite accurately, that there seems to be a limit to how far towards the intelligence side of the scale people will tend to fall, whereas society seems to consistently demonstrate that, contrary to intuition, there does not seem to be ANY practical limit on how stupid people can get.
They're two different maxims, as far as I'm concerned. Relax.

The ignorance of the masses has ever been a pillar of non-democratic rule. Kings and emperors and lords of eras past took it for granted that "the people" were clueless and easily led -- that this was, in fact, their "lot in life".
America was a deliberate attempt by our Founding Fathers to conduct a "Great Experiment" -- to see if putting the power into the hands of the people, rather than the governors, resulted in a better state.
People like Cheney and Rumsfeld have been working for decades to undermine this Experiment and return power to the few. Poor public education, rampant Christian fundamentalism and leftover Southern pride are among the ingredients that have allowed Cheney's usurpation of power to succeed as much as it has.
The Great Experiment is being thoroughly fucked with. And I'm not happy about it.

You're the only one that has stated the obvious so clearly.
I'm sorry for his demise but after seeing a few episodes, I'm surprised that it didn't happen sooner.
Because Irwin pushed it. I mean he pushed it to ridiculous levels of unnecessary danger.
I remember a guy named Marlon Perkins on Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom. He and his assistant Jim mixed it up pretty good with the animal world but they never seemed to forget that they were ONLY guests. Irwin it appears to me forgot that on numerous occasions even after he got roughed up a few times. The animals let him go with a warning.

So anyone who doesn't worship at the altar of Steve Irwin is a narrow-minded uneducated slob (your words)?
Wow, you really respect the opinions of others. Who's narrow-minded here?
There are other ways to protect animals than manhandling and provoking them on camera. This may get the attention of the public, as Irwin did effectively on TV, but it does nothing to advance the vital work of protecting habitat or raising public consciousness about the negative effect our consumer lifestyle has on the natural world.
You said Irwin "has done nothing but devote his time to saving creatures". I say he was an entertainer and little more. His education finished with high school. Other than wrestling crocs and snakes for paying audiences at the family zoo (Crikey, mate!), he had no training or expertise in biology, zoology, wildlife conservation or habitat preservation.
Compare Steve Irwin to real naturalists, real protectors of wildlife - people like Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey. Steve Irwin had charisma, but none of their knowledge and none of their moral authority.

It's not easy being human.
Odd thing is Irwin would likely be the most vociferous spokesperson for not doing this sort of thing.

tyree, thanks, I don't get all those Networks, just CNN Worldnews once in a while. I get most news from the local papers here, they gave this story only two paragraphs behind the sports section.
Seems I just read some article about the FCC "hiding and destroying" a report that didn't fit the administrations needs even if it was a survey of the reader/watcher/listenership.

Irwin was a conservationists, his message was always, save the environment and wild animals. They are doing the exact opposite of what Irwin wanted. They are *ssholes. Australian should arrest them.
I liked Irwins message, but not the way he went about doing it. In fact, I hated that part. It was only a matter of time, the way he got into wild animals' faces, daring them to do something because it made good TV.
Anyone ever see David Letterman and the Stupid Pet Tricks where someone came out with what looked liked to be a black lab. Letterman put his face right into the labs face and started making goffy noises. The lab stapped at him and drew blood.
I feel sorry for our environment and wildlife. They are what makes this planet enjoyable. Nature is God's very own chapel.

So anyone who doesn't worship at the altar of Steve Irwin is a narrow-minded uneducated slob (your words)?
Wow, you really respect the opinions of others. Who's narrow-minded here?

don't be ridiculous, this isn't about a Steve Irwin worship conglomerate. You see him jumping on animals and think that this is some sort of "one-off" experience???
I said what I said because I've seen his work first hand...have you? I feel that you have ignored pretty much most of my initial post and just moved on to reinforce your argument about Steve being some sort of animal antagonizer. I know what Jane Goodall has done with animals and she is a wonderful person who deals with creatures that are actually DIFFERENT from reptiles as such. Have you seen Steve Irwin jump on a Koala, or a Wombat or a bloody Kangaroo the same as he does with very large reptilians? Probably not, because the temperament of those creatures are different to the reptile species. He does what he does to protect himself and to protect and move the reptile that needs moving.
Different creatures require different attention....
sorry about the 'slob' remark, but you got me cranky...I retract that because I really don't know you! I, myself, am a slob. :-(
I'm just at my wit's end as to understand why people would think badly of someone who was as passionate as their Father about alerting people to the plight of endangered creatures!

''Ten years from now, when we have the whole story, we are going to be ashamed,'' he said. ''This is not us. This is not the way we do business. I don’t think in our history we’ve ever had a presidential involvement, a secretarial involvement, a vice-presidential involvement, an attorney-general’s involvement in telling our troops essentially, Carte blanche is the way you should feel. You should not have any qualms because this is a different kind of conflict.''
~ Lawrence Wilkerson, in his "cabal" speech
If congress does indeed "legalize" torture -- ["If congress doesn't legalize this illegal Program, it will end." ~ the Preznet] -- would it get past the Supremes? And if congress does not legalize torture, will this "Program" -- ala presidential signing statements -- truly end?
Presidentally authorized horror shops -- Abu Ghraib just one example of this entire obsenity.
Recall that the Pentagon is "investigating" more than (admittedly) 100 detainee deaths -- "Oops! Must have shoved the baton a little too far up Haji's a**!"
Note, too, that "Worried CIA Officers Buy Legal Insurance."
Staggeringly stunning that this even remains "debatable" -- that Bush & Co's advocacy of torture is buttressed by a significant measure of popular, political support!
["At first, we denied our culpability in the abominations of Abu Ghraib and elsewhere. But it polled well among a certain segment of voters! So now we're openly pitching our blood lust in prime time speeches to the nation, and viciously castigating those who 'don't have the stomach for it!'"]
Utterly obscene.

Steve Irwin was a great human being... UNLESS, of course, you were an animal that he got near to antagonize, humiliate or torture, while the cameras were rolling.
Animals, and animal lovers can rest a little easier, knowing this cruel buffoon can no longer hurt them.

Steve Irwin was also a redneck concservative, one who was taking taxpayer dollars to shill for the Bush Lite Australian government, had taken part in Bush photo opps, and had once publicly called for a liberal senator to be beaten for daring to go against John Howard's wishes.

But there is always a few jerks around even among Steve's fans. I think he was great and I miss him. If there were only more people like him on this planet, it would be a better place.

Hello said -"It was on MSN's start page, along with the slaughterhouse pig story.
It's not bullshit. Humans really do suck."
Oh, if it was on MSN then it must be true?? Although I do agree with you that humans do suck. I live in Queensland, on the Sunshine coast in fact (Maroochydore) and have met Steve twice. In fact I live about 50 yard's from the beach at Maroochy.
This story is a typical media beat up over something that I am VERY suspicious even happened.
All I ask is not to believe every piece of fluff that blows your way.
I can assure you that there was no revenge attacks on Stingray's in Queensland, either I would have heard something by way of local gossip or it would of at least have been in the local papers or radio/TV.
People are so incredibly gullible at times, it is for this fact that Bush is in power because so many believed the WMD tripe and that Saddam had something to do with 911 when it was blatantly obvious to anyone who did further research that this wasn't the case.
Revenge attacks on Stingrays...pleeaasseee... and so many here accept it as fact because it was reported in a newspaper in a different country on the other side of the planet by people who I doubt have even been to the Sunshine Coast, Qld, Australia.
TBH I find the reaction to a story that, from where I come from, so obviously fabricated (printed in papers overseas but not in any or local papers) to be a sad indictment of how easily people are manipulated and whipped into a frenzy. I would have thought that people on the Left would question a little more.
This story has mainly being doing the rounds on Left leaning sites and To be honest I've been continually disappointed at how quickly people are sucked in by bullshit propagated by the mainstream media.

I'm with you Wess. I, too, have met Steve and found him to be a lovely bloke who is highly motivated by a need to protect wildlife. I live on the South Coast and also lived at Coolum Beach for a while. We go back every year for a holiday and to visit old friends.
I've seen nothing in our local rags over here about it and was surprised when I read about it here!
However, comments like this:
"So, Steve Irwin started this cult of harassing and even killing innocent creatures who wanted nothing more than to be left alone. Go figure. Nice legacy, Steve.

In my opinion, Steve Irwin was an electrical image on a cathode ray tube in my basement. His death does not diminish me in the least, nor do the deaths of so many other poor souls each day who never appeared on TV.
Besides, the whole "CRIKEY" thing and his manic gyrations were just GRATING. No worries, though.
Anyone who owns a TV can look forward to specials and anniversary
