Secret Torture in Afghanistan:
A TIMES INVESTIGATION
A Silence in the Afghan Mountains
The concealment of two detainee deaths paints a troubling picture of abuse by U.S. Special Forces units deployed to the country.
...
Apparently unknown to Army officials, two detainees had died in the team's custody in separate incidents during the unit's final month in eastern Afghanistan. Several other detainees allege that they were badly beaten or tortured while held at the base in Gardez.
One victim, an unarmed peasant, was shot to death while being held for questioning after a fierce firefight. The other, an 18-year-old Afghan army recruit, died after being interrogated at the firebase. Descriptions of his injuries were consistent with severe beatings and other abuse.
A member of the Special Forces team told The Times his unit held a meeting after the teen's death to coordinate their stories should an investigation arise.
"Everybody on the team had knowledge of it," the soldier said, insisting on anonymity. "You just don't talk about that stuff in the Special Forces community. What happens downrange stays downrange…. Nobody wants to get anybody in trouble. Just sit back, and hope it will go away."

1) Torture is prima-facia proof that a policy is losing its way. As pointed out in the recent Wa-Po article, torture drives out intelligent interrogation and interrogators and let's in the "brown shirts" (they hurt and scare and provide lousy information).
2) Frist is an anti-Constitutional bozo.

"That's so hypothetical that I don't know." -- Bill Frist
I love it how these guys, who point time after time to a Hollywood-like scenario in which a captured terrorist knows where a ticking nuclear bomb is, will avoid a hypothetical that's 100 times more likely to occur.

We have the threat of terrorism from abroad, but we have the homegrown threat of facism here at home. We have...
(1.) A written plan for 'benevolent' world hegemony by PNAC, who handles foreign policy (Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc)
(2.) The U.S. spends half of the worlds expenditures for the military, a spending spree similiar to Germany's prior to WW2.
(3.) The introduction of the 'unitary executive' concept, the decider, Der Führer, who can nullify the constitution...
(4.) Endorsement of torture...
(5.) The conversion of the federally regulated new media into a propaganda machine.
(6.) In lieu of a master race, a master religion of sorts.
You know, when it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck ... it's a duck!

Frist(Mengele) wants to pass George Bush's TORTURE bill, because it retroactively absolves Bush from war crimes. They are trying to protect their criminal in chief!!!!
These republicans haven't been so desperate to try to pass any other piece of legislation as they are to pass this. Without this bill, George Bush is blatantly a war criminal, and his nazi footsoldiers in the congress are trying to cover for him.

(As most of you know, you can hear the music and lyrics at the homepage.)
"We’re crying out to our institutions
But they’re bought and paid with corrupt contributions
Some praise the flag yet burn the Constitution
While democracy’s in danger of total ruin
Torture in the name of the free, more misery for you and me
They ship ‘em out so we can’t see the way they bring ‘em to their knees
Keep you eyes glued to the news, a woman may not have the right to choose
Prayer in school? Pray to whom? Buddha? Krishna? Or Reverend Moon?
Drink the kool aid, close your eyes, everything’s gonna be alright
Holy smoke screen, gimme the green, no paper trail in the voting machines
When it comes to War leave My child behind
Your word’s no longer worth a dime
How many lies, how many cries, how many lives per gallon?
Judgement day is coming
They might not like what it’s gonna say
Judgement day is coming
The holy hypocrites are gonna pay."

These a-holes don't read anything, do they?
I seem to recall a week or two ago when Cheney was on Meet The Press, he told Timmeh that he hadn't read the Senate report that said there was absolutely no linkage between Saddam and 9/11 and that he viewed outside terror organizations as a threat. The report had been out for days.
It's quite obvious that they read these reports, then go on the Sunday shows to distract and deflect all critisisms away from these damning reports.

Frist claims that the attack in 1993 in the WTC, the attacks on the embassies in Africa, the attack on the USS Cole all qualify as attacks on our country, yet somehow he claims that we haven't been attacked since 9/11. Then what does Frist call the hundreds upon hundreds of attacks on us in Iraq? Somehow it is OK to fail to protect our troops in Iraq and fail to protect the Iraqi people.

I'm honestly more interested in knowing how in the world Frist got a medical degree, and a surgeon none the less. In my freshman and sophomore years of engineering school I was with a lot of pre-med students and although those classes weren't that tough, the med school people HAD to get straight A's - had to. I can't imagine Frist doing it on the up and up. How does George Allen get a law degree. Some of my friends got their law degrees and the load they went through was brutal. These guys were so much smarter than Allen I can't even believe it. I can't understand how these guys did it.

It is very disturbing to watch this man whose profession is in the medical field....a medical doctor that is, and allowing and giving the president the leeway the authority to pursue an inhumane acts of torture without the considering the ramification that may place our soldiers in danger as a retaliation.
They also ignored the implication it has on our reputation as a nation in the International Community.

You can't train to resist water boarding. I remember reading an article about water boarding and it said the CIA used it on their own people as a training exercise. The agents who were water boarded knew full well, going into it, that they would not drown, yet they still couldn't hold out more than a few seconds. So I don't know what this dumbass is talking about when he says he might aid the terrorists if he answers whether or not water boarding is torture.

For those who claim it isn't torture, let's try it on them. I'll bet we can get them to say that it's torture then. We can also get them to say they flew the planes into the Trade Centers. That's how useful torture information is.
It comes down to sadism. Bullies are addicted to torture, and it's got nothing to do with getting information. It's a psycho-sexual high they get from inflicting pain and dominance.

It is VERY clear to me that the ADMINISTRATION want a clear narrow defined toture tactics that is legal and illegal. They want a laundry list of acceptable specific torture tactics and a list of UNACCEPTABLE torture tactics. ANY TORTURE THAT IS CLEARLY NOT INCLUDING IN ANY OF THESE LIST would therefore NOT illegal.
Creating a loophole where the interrogator can be creative and invent TORTURE methods that would NOT violate such LAWS.
BUSH GANG is pulling a fast one....they think PEOPLE are so STUPID.
Oh hanging a person up-side-down for 48 hours is not part of the LAW....therefore we would not be convicted of a WAR CRIME.
OH...water boarding for a period of 10 does not exceed the limit of 11 hours therefore this torture is okay.
OH sleep deprivation for 40 hours is not considered illegal since it does not exceed 42 hours.
THIS IS WHAT THE ADMINISTRATION IS HOPING IT CAN DO...
LAWS that are GIVING THE INTERROGATOR GUIDANCE AS TO WHAT THEY CAN DO and can not do and how much they can do the torture without committing WAR CRIMES.

An American airman from the Doolittle Raid in 1942 testified to his experience with waterboarding at the hands of the Japanese in the trial of Lieutenant General Shigeru Sawada and Three Others, 5 LRTWC. 1 (US Military Commission, Shanghai 1946).
What is interesting is this trial undermines President Bush's argument that redefining Article III would remove culpability for the CIA. It was found that Sawada and the others tortured prisoners under orders by their government. They were still found guilty and sentenced to prison.
This concept has been incorporated into US Military Justice in at least two trials including My Lai. Anyone in the CIA using torture would be just as guilty.

Torture is torture. If you cause a person to experience enough pain over enough time, they will tell you anything they think you want to hear, whether it is the truth or not. Torture is not a valid tool to extract information. The only purpose it serves is cause prolonged pain. People who do this are usually known as sadists. Are these the 'professionals' that Dumbya refers to when defending the use of torture? America is better than that. George W. Bush shames and dirties the name of the United States of America.
Did anyone else get the impression that Frist was as nervous as a whore in church during the whole interview?

Wat...n_waterboarding
Waterboarding is a torture technique that is used in coerced interrogations or for punishment. In modern practice it produces a severe gag reflex and makes the subject believe his death is imminent, while not causing permanent or lasting physical harm. For this reason—and its use in the interrogation of US War on Terrorism detainees—its recognition as torture is disputed.

FRIST SAID "WAR CRIMES ACT will itemize what can be done and what can not (refering to specific torture acts)
SO if waterboarding, sleep deprivation, sexual assault, are NOT included in the "ITEMIZE" lists of what can or can not be done, is therefore NOT going to be a violation of the WAR CRIMES ACT.
let me reiterate.. TORTURE ACTS not included on the itemize list is NOT going to be a violation of the WAR CRIMES ACT.
THIS IS ABSURD.....THIS ADMINISTRATION is obviously trying to cover their asses for the CRIMES they have ALREADY COMMITTED.

Ok...soooo this is what I'm hearing. As long as we aren't attacted, as long as waterboarding and torture works to keep the terrorists from attacking the US, as long as we can keep the war over 'there' so it doesn't come here all of these things are allowable. And a war can be anywhere in the world as long as it keeps America safe.
So what is that telling the rest of the world? To me it's telling them they are expendable. Nice message.

Everytime a report from the reality based community theatens to damage the Neo-Cons calm all you have to do is go on the Sunday morning shows and say that you haven't seen the report yet.
Commentator: Senator/Veep/Madam Secretary, this report contradicts everything you've ever said in public.
Senator/Veep/Madam Secretary: I haven't seen it yet.
Commentator: Well then. I you haven't seen it, then I guess that settles it. Sorry to wake up so early in the morning on a weekend.

Somehow it is OK to fail to protect our troops in Iraq and fail to protect the Iraqi people.
archerofloaf | 09.24.06 - 3:10 pm | #
I was going to type this exact same thing. Instead, I'll just say "seconded". I don't see how, if you count all these foreign attacks on the US, you don't count the attacks on the US in Iraq, or our embassy in Syria. It's crippled rhetoric.

It is very strange to see a doctor defending torture. He refuses to talk about specific methods though he must know exactly what they mean.
Unfortunately, the interviewer never asked him if he personally would carry out any of the torture procedures that he wants to authorize--legalize is too big a word.

If I were a cardiac patient in Tenn. I would investigate quickly to ensure that quack Frist was no where around. He is a complete embicile with his mouth-god knows what damage he has done with a scapel. Lets see Frist can't talk about waterboarding or US tax paid reports but can diagnose a brain dead woman on video, he knows that masterbation causes pregnancy, tears and sweat can transmit HIV/AIDS. What a fraud. How proud Tenn. must be. I am very proud of my TX senators: Cornyn votes for torture, Hutchison thinks the poor are concerned with estate taxes. When polls say voters like their legislators but think the rest of the bums should be voted out I scream. My senators are idiots and every republican senator and congressman/woman are idiots/crooks/liars/fascist/cowards and should be kicked out of Wash DC before we are permanently destroyed both financially, and constitutionally.

I wrote to GS after I saw this interview this morning. It wasn't nice. I basically told him to grow a pair and instead of asking all these jerks about waterboarding which we all know now that they won't comment on, why doesn't he ask them about the rapes and sodomy. I want to see them spin this. As my trolling has shown me, the other side thinks sleep deprivation and loud music is what we are complaining about. I want them to put the truth out there and then dare to say we are against it for silly reasons. The rape pictures are on the net and I put them up on their sights to show what we are talking about. Some were shocked but some told me I was sick. Me?
I don't know where the Dems have been this week but if they filibuster this they are going to have to use those pictures and bring this out as to why instead of just being accused of being weak. There is too much at stake here.
They will NEVER release a list because it will have those crimes listed. It will have to if they want to make them retroactive.

This sums it up for me:
http://daltonator.net/durandal/b...ndal/blog/?
p=68
Let’s be clear about one thing. There is one reason -and only one reason- why a person tortures an animal: pure sadism.
Sure the redneck who tapes fishhooks and razor blades to the feet of a rooster to give him a leg up at the cockfights will earnestly insist that the chicken who is about to be torn to pieces in the cockpit has it much better than the ones who are cut up and served for dinner. The inbred peckerwoods who feed ground glass to pit bulls at the dogfights to make them more ferocious are no different when they claim that since the dog enjoys fighting and was going to be put down anyway, there was no harm done. Both who revel in the torture of animals might, in an unguarded, candid moment (usually brought on by grain alcohol), admit that they do it as a way to come up with some tax-free cash to pay for that double-wide they’ve had their eyes on. But the main reason people throw roosters, dogs and other animals into a pit to kill and maim (or be killed and maimed) is because of the sadistic joy they get out of watching and/ or taking part in pain, mutilation and death.

This is such a perversion of everything America has ever stood for. It's so disgusting. Just how low can we go under this administration? And to think people who call themselves Christians support this guy. I never in my wildest dreams thought we'd be discussing the merits of torture. You know this has everything to do with keeping Bush and his commrades out of jail. Apparently all that protesting from McCain, Graham, and Warner was just for show. Bush got what he wanted in the end. He always does. Screw the Constitution, screw the Supreme Court, screw the Geneva Conventions, and screw the law. King George is in charge.

Well, Frist watched a video of waterboarding being used and diagnosed that it wasn't really waterboarding or torture because White House lawyers like Gonzales and Yoo have said waterboarding isn't torture.
When Frist was asked if he would submit himself to some good ol' waterboarding-that-isn't-torture so he could have some first-hand experience, he responded by saying "sure, I'll do anything for our troops to show them that when they are captured while overseas fighting someday that waterboarding isn't torture because President Bush, and his elite lawyers, said it isn't torture."
When asked by a reporter about the Geneva Conventions, Frist said, with a dazed look on this face, "Huh???" Then he proclaimed that everything changed after 9/11, including the definition of torture contained in the Geneva Conventions, because, you know, those Geneva Conventions are so "vague" about what torture is. Then he started cackling and stuck his thumb in his mouth.

Does the Constitution still matter? Do human rights still matter? Does democracy still matter? I believe that America sees what the right wing is doing to our country, our freedoms, and what their actions say about the basic human rights of every citizen of every country. Torture is an unreliable method of gathering information. More importantly, it is simply cruel and inhuman and calling it by a different name does not change that. Most Americans, and almost everyone else throughout the rest of the world sees us dehumanizing enemies and stripping more and more rights away from our own citizens. We are now witness to the dimming of America's light of freedom and hope to the rest of the world, which had been our inheritance. Pathetic.

I don't know why Frist ever comes on This Week. He always ends up looking like a numb nuts.
The last time he was on, the good Dr couldn't confirm if you HIV is passed through sweat. And this moron is supposed to have an ivy league education?
