will 'manly annie' claim responsibility for this one too?

shame it happened to such a good man - a -real- man.

Gravatar Obviously, the Republicans are desperate people...many of whom will be indicted or go to jail if the Dems get back in power. That's a definite - and "desperate people take desperate measures", we know that so when one combines these two factors, this is the type of low-brow behavior to expect. Some people have boocoodles on the line here....for some it's a matter or being free or being in prison. Sad, but true!

Gravatar The crack-pot "right" in action, folks!

Gravatar Aren't these types of 'attacks' the very thing the government warned us about "falling into complicity" about shortly after 9/11?

Never let your guard down?

And here, we have.

Gravatar maybe o'reilly is right - these people are on some kind of al qaeda hit list.

hmmmm

Gravatar Maybe someone should send Ms. Paula an envelope of powder detergent and see how funny it is then.

Gravatar Betcha Keith will have much to say about this. Can't wait.

Gravatar tried to send her an email but it was not accepted. By her server.

Gravatar Yeah, we know what kind of people send fake anthrax letters in the mail. The same that send real anthrax letters in the mail.

I hope Bush and the Feds have something to say about this.

Gravatar Why are cons so happy that this happened to Olbermann? Sadism. They wouldn't be cheering if it happened to them. They cheer because it happened to Olberamann.

Gravatar Thing is, the anthrax terrorism--which was quite real--was directed at Democractic leaders and journalists. That Olbermann should be concerned about receiving such a letter should hardly come as a shock.

Regardless of what the powder was, it was essentially a case of terrorism and yet another case of domestic terrorism coming from the right-wing.

Gravatar Wow.

Keith has obviously touched a nerve.

And where there is one, there are plenty more willing to do the same thing, if not something worse.

Why did the NY Post put this on the gossip page???

This broad will be getting an email. POST HASTE.

Gravatar ...is this in any other news-source than the NY Post?

Gravatar Hey John and C&L readers,

To stop the torture legislation, you must call the Senators from Maine RIGHT NOW!

Sen Olympia Snow:
Phone: (202) 224-5344

and

Sen Susan Collins:
Phone: (202) 224-2523

Please C&L make this a call to action at the top of the page.

Gravatar paula.froelich@nypost.com

Gravatar And little Paula would have been weeping like a baby and milking the "horror" of her receiving such a letter. If a nut like her got this letter it would be hailed as the crime of the century.

Plus it's published in Page Six. Their journalistic integrity is less than stellar.

Gravatar With Ann Coulter talking about poisonig Supreme Court justices and fragging members of Congress, RNC convention-goers donning sparkly purple-heart band aids in contempt of every veteran of every war, and Newsweek not having the balls to let Americans see the REAL cover story this week, WHY IS ANYONE SURPRISED THAT THEY ARE MAKING FUN OF KEITH OLBERMANN GETTING A LETTER POTENTIALLY FULL OF ANTHRAX???!?!?!?!?!??? These people are the scum of the earth, lemming, sheep and otherwise brainless peons who are GLADLY ordered around by whatever Reich-wing blowhard happens to bellow the loudest that day. They don't have an individual thought in their bodies. I wish they would all get airdropped into Fallujah.

Gravatar Reich-wingers are good at murdering and making death threats against their opposition.

Gravatar ...do we have another news-source other than the NY Post?

Gravatar Of course they thought it was funny. Disappointing as it might be that any American should be so incredibly callous, it unfortunately shouldn’t come as any surprise—look at how much effort has been put into finding whomever sent the real anthrax letters the first time around.

Don’t hear much about them anymore, do we?

Gravatar Someone tell Paula.Froelich@nypost
that there is no difference between fake and real anthrax threats. I don't email off this machine.

Gravatar Karla Rove Karma back at ya, Paula.

Gravatar my e mail to paula froelich and the editor

Dear Paula, Editor et al,
That was really very funny printing that column.
It is indeed about time to put Keith Olberman in his place.
Yes, let's laugh while the present administration is wasting lives on the battlegrounds of Iraq, folks are being tortured. thousands of Iraqis have been killed. Yes, let's hit Keith Olberman below the belt as he is the object of terrorism... which you so talk about is being eradicated by the Bush government.
It is true.... you in your light hearted column are just adding yourselves to those who have blood on their hands!
Continue doing this.... and if, as a right winger is likely to pronounce the likes of keith Olberman will burn and rot in hell, how much more you and the karma you bring upon yourself.
Have at it..... Let's read more!
Sincerely,
william

Gravatar "loudmouth"...."flipped out"...."acerbic host"...."caustic commentator"...." Whether they gave him a lollipop"....

What feeble "reporting" by the anti-American and unhinged reich-wing.

Gravatar For perspective one only has to look at Ann Coulter, who screamed and ran in a terrorized haze from a college kid with a cream pie. Then she wanted him charged with terrorism. The tough right strikes again. They can dish it out but certainly can't take it.

Gravatar One merely needs to read the KO threads here to get a feel for the visceral hatred that he brings out in the wingnuts. It has also been my past experience that the vast, overwhelming majority of "revenge" violence is perpetrated by right wingers. Not all, mind you, but most.

This fits into their authoritarian world view. Question the chimporer at your peril
.

Gravatar This is more proof that the anti-American right are most likely responsible for the antrax letters following 9.11.

Gravatar This was shamefully written. Olbermann had every reason in the world to feel that his life was threatened. He is now the victim of a terrorist threat.

My God, people, this is an all-out war against us by the media. It doesn't get any lower or more real than this.

Gravatar it's nice to see the NY Post taking a terrorist attack so seriously. I can't wait to see what kind of jokes they make about 9/11.

Gravatar What the hell happened to my country?! This is one of those days I think I woke up in an alternate universe.

Keith, seriously, watch your back! These people can't handle the truth and might really try to kill the messanger to stop it.

Gravatar I hope the FBI and police investigate, and a strong message sent that this is not acceptable in a free Democracy.

This is a CRIME!

Our way of life is being attacked.

Could this be the same person(s) responsible for the Washington anthrax that killed postal workers?

Gravatar blow this puppy up. "Right wingers are now resorting to fake terrorist attacks to intimidate their political opponents... Republicans appear to be completely losing control of themselves at the thought of losing power..."

Gravatar Fight harder, we got your back Keith

Gravatar I just sent my email:

Since when, did an anthrax scare become fodder for the gossip pages?
Your sense of 'humor' leaves a lot to be desired.

I would suggest, an apology to Mr. Olbermann and his family for taking an act of TERRORISM and attempting to turn it into a joke.

Yes TERRORISM ma'am. Look up the term, and recall the various anthrax scares post 9/11 INCLUDING the case where a person actually DIED.

I bless you in advance for your contrition.

Gravatar "Yeah, we know what kind of people send fake anthrax letters in the mail. The same that send real anthrax letters in the mail.

I hope Bush and the Feds have something to say about this.
Total Information Awareness | 09.27.06 - 2:23 pm | #"

You are 100% correct.

Gravatar Add ".com" to her email address. Link is incomplete!

Gravatar The wingnuts use terror to attempt to silence us. If we do not take a stand they will eventually come for us. We are passive at our own peril now.

Take a stand people. Oct. 5th

.

Gravatar I sent Paula a letter, but with respect to showing more class that she did? Well ... I think if one manages to avoid soiling their trousers, they have probably already shown considerably more class.

Gravatar Her e-mail address needs to be in lowercase.

paula.froelich@nypost

But seriously. She's a hack who writes for a gossip column. That makes her rank up there with "poop-on-a-shoe".

Her comments are proof of the low life she and other staff of Page Six are. Do we really expect any better of such morons?

She is endorsing a terrorist act by making fun of it. I agree that if it had gone to Bill O'Reilly it would have been hailed as the crime of the century! Bill-O would have been crying to high heaven and she could then hold his hand and declare him teh bravest person in the world.

Froelich and her ilk are no better than the person who sent Olbermann the letter. In fact it was surely a Republican who sent it.

Gravatar Every day these people are spreading fear and trying to make us all afraid, and then something truly scary and suspicious happens and they blow it off and make jokes?
How telling.

Gravatar paula.froelich@nypost.com

thanks, I fixed it....

Gravatar Writing to the New York Post would be as rewarding as arguing with a troll.

Gravatar Hmmm, well, looks like a sign of the times to me... With November rolling aound this shit is just going to get worse.... asymetry... It ain't just for jihadists anymore.....Yep, shits waaay deep and it's going to keep getting worse until we throw the bums out of D.C.... In the meantime, the bums fans will keep doing these sorts of B.S stunts and worse.....JD

Gravatar Idiot sends hoax anthrax. TV presenter does right thing, informs cops. Ms Froelich has a wank on Page 6 of the NY Post.

No, not a "new low" for right wing media, not an "outrage" or a "total disgrace". Just the usual crap.

Don't get upset. Must be a slow day even to notice such nonsense.

Gravatar Is it not a felony crime in the States to use a gun in the commission of a crime, regardless of whether or not it's loaded? To use the federal mail for the commission of a crime - and death threats count as 'crime', whether it's soap powder 'poison' or the real thing - is not a laughing matter.

I personally won't bother emailing Paula Froelich, as I don't believe it would make a bit of difference to someone with that kind of sick mindset anyway, and leaving my URL fingerprints might leave me open to 'retaliation'. But a loud show of support for Olbermann in outrage that a genuine 'terrorist threat' (and that's exactly what that was) is being lauded by the right when the target is an outspoken critic on the left wouldn't go amiss.

Shame on this sorry excuse for a 'journalist'. Shame on the Post for hiring such a despicable woman. Shame on any legal system that doesn't immediately take this seriously, track down and arrest the person who sent this death threat and prosecute that person to the full extent of what is left of what passes for 'law' in the States anymore.

Gravatar Wait, you wingnuts, this is identical to what you left wingers did to Rush when he got caught with the Viagra, except that Viagra is a legal, non-poisonous substance, where weapons-grade anthrax is illegal and poisonous. You guys can't have it both ways.

Gravatar Since Keith has been nailing the Bush regime lately this is not a surprise. Most of us would freak out after the Antrhax attacks if we got a letter like this. I know I would and I would love to get my hands on whoever sent it as well. But then it's always cowards who do this kind of stuff.

Gravatar A crime has been committed, and this broad made a joke of it.

Had the shoe been on the 'other foot', you better believe if a 'liberal' printed an article joking about it, we would NEVER hear the end of it. NEVER.

If a 'liberal' was suspected of committing a federal crime, an act of terrorism, the reich-wing would be cumming on themselves with glee and fervor.

Now is not the time to parse the issue by saying it's 'just the gossip coloumn'.

The Editor of the NY Post still has a job to do, gossip page or not. A lawsuit based on a gossip page blurb, is still a lawsuit.

Gravatar Boys and girls, this is just the latest Odormann fraud. The fool went to California and mailed soap to himself in a failed attempt to portray this hoax as a "threat" to Odormann. I can't wait to hear Odormann's hysterical response to his own fraud.

Gravatar Here's my email to Paula:

Your story regarding Keith Olbermann is indicative of right-wing casualness toward domestic terrorism. It isn't surprising, or coincidental, that the vast majority of powder-filled envelopes are addressed to liberals, progressives or anyone who might speak out against the Bush administration. It also isn't surprising that abortion clinic bombings, federal building bombings and Olympic Park bombings have been committed by domestic right-wing radicals. Props for keeping domestic terrorism light and funny for the right-wing to enjoy.

Gravatar 'and leaving my URL fingerprints might leave me open to 'retaliation'

You assume folks at the post are capable of parsing their mail server logs.

You're a better person than I am.

Gravatar Tom, go crawl back in you hole if you have nothing constructive to say. We don't need your right wing bullshit sniping. You sound like John Stossel for chrissake.

Gravatar Otto-

You ignorant slut. Why don't you read the story before posting.

Gravatar Otto-

You ignorant slut. Why don't you read the story before posting.

Gravatar What's the main story on Countdown tonight? Oh yea, that's right: Bush administration pre 9/11 failures. This will for sure be the defining newscast on the topic. Could this have something to do with it? Probably not. But I'm sure he's going to ruffle some feathers with this report.

Gravatar Otto,

Don't be a fool. Limbaugh got lambasted since he, as un-married and un-attached, went to a location known for child prostitution with Viagra not prescribed in his name. Hardly the same thing now, is it?

Gravatar Weren't two Democratic lawmakers -- Daschle and Leahy, I believe -- sent real anthrax letters, then changed their minds about some sort of pro-Bush legislation they had previously opposed?
Then no reports of real or fake anthrax threats until now, an election year, and against someone who just gave an anti-Bush commentary. Hmm ...

Gravatar Dear Otto,

What happened to Olbermann is a terrorist action. Rush unable to get a hard-on isn't the same thing. And where is the coverage of Rush's drug addictions even remotely the same? A self righteous airhead who gets caught in a drug sting? Yeah that is equal to Olbermann getting a terroristic threat.

Oh the delusion of the Repugs. Only a Repug could make such a grotesque leap of logic.

Gravatar Tom

bite yourself ...............go play and leave the grownups alone

Gravatar Tom,

Where's your proof of that?

Gravatar Disgraceful. I hope Olbermann does speak out. This seems to be part of a pattern.

Something seems to be stirring in the anthrax swamp again. First the fake death threats and false alarms, then maybe some of the real stuff. And then we identify overseas evildoers as the likely source (now that the FBI claims that 2001 attacks were not domestic after all). Sound familiar? Can you spell October Surprise? Or more likely, November Surprise? (After Diebold swings another election for the Republicans.)

Gravatar So the Repug conspiracy theorists have spewed ther Olbermann theories. Well we can see the vacum of thought that is the Repug brain.

Gravatar Not much of a surprise. The right doesn't have anything to offer other than fear and smear. They tried smearing Keith with the "hitler salute" nonsense and the emails he sent a few months back, but that didn't work, so now they're physically intimidating him. Chickenshit Republicanites.

This must mean they're *really* scared that the party's over!

Gravatar Tom | 09.27.06 - 2:52 pm | #

Right, Olbermann owns the N.Y.Post. Liberal N.Y. Post. I got it now. You're a genius. I can also tell that by the "Odormann" pun. Good stuff, sir. Don't you have to get back to writing this week's episode of "According to Jim?"

Gravatar I thinks KO's OVERreaction to the situation is kinda funny. What a pussy!

Gravatar Otto - Excuse me? Rush Limbaugh, a convicted drug abuser, getting caught illegally using phony script to buy viagra for his own personal use is 'identical' to an unknown person sending Olbermann a death threat with suspicious powder in the envelope?

And you think we're the wingnuts?

Let's hope if you ever get called up for jury duty someone is smart enough to spot the missing screws rattling round in your head.

Gravatar Hmmm...isn't that a terrorist attack? Just because it wasn't really anthrax means nothing, it was meant to threaten and terrorize.

Once again we are attacked on our homeland during the Bush mis-administration.

Gravatar righties are a kooky bunch. from murdering doctors who perform abortions to promoting torture, they are mean spirited hate mongers.

Gravatar Can DNA be picked up from that envelope?

I say mount a full investigation.

And include Paula as a suspect!

I say Paul deserves NO respect. Send her a big LOLLIPOP and tell her to f*** off!

Gravatar Meanwhile, wouldn't it be nice if Oberman did a piece about this AND included Paula as being part of the government lunatics running scared and desperate?

Gravatar Dr Matt...right on. The FBI better check on repubs FIRST and find the bastard/bitch and to jail they go.

Gravatar VOR,

What exactly would you have done had you received a mailing containing white powder and threats?

Wanting to take care of your own health is such a "pussy" thing to do, I guess.

JEEZ, what makes wingnuts so freakin' stupid?

Gravatar anthrax
what happened last time ,no one got cought did saddam send it or cheny

Gravatar Limbaugh would probably snort the powder, thinking his latest Oxy delivery got crushed in the mail.

Gravatar So I guess we can now conclude that conservatives are terrorists, and conservatives will laugh if someone complains about their terrorist activities.

If I were in government, I'd put Paula Froelich in jail for encouraging terrorist activiities. And according to the law they so desperately want to pass Right Now, I'd be able to do exactly that. And she wouldn't be able to challenge the determination that put her there.

Gravatar Tom, why bother posting something that makes no logical sense? I can't remember the last time I heard someone on the right make a coherent, logical statement backed up by facts. I used to think that the right wingers I met were just ignorant, that there had to be right wingers out there who could put thoughts together to at least make you think. I've come to the conclusion that you all share a brain and you aren't collectively interested in using it. To believe the rights general world view you must: 1. Be ignorant (not necessarily dumb). 2. Not be inclined to question what you’re told (say fact check what the right wing figure heads tell you). 3. Think facts are irrelevant. 4. Not care that the leaders of the “conservative” movement have contempt for working class self proclaimed conservatives behind closed doors.

I guarantee you that they laugh at people like you, to the bank, and rely on the fact that you’re willfully ignorant during their campaign seasons. People like you won’t question what they say, regardless of how ridiculous it is, and they thank you. Without you they’d have to rely on their intelligence to make it and that would just be wrong.

Gravatar Wouldn't be surprised if Murdoch was the one who sent it. Harmless powder or not, if they catch the person(s) who did it,he's in a shitload of trouble.

Gravatar So VOR thinks Olbermann overreacted? And he calls Olbermann a "p--sy? Well I guess all those other folks in our country who died from the first wave af "anthrax letters" and others who were victims of hoaxes were "p--sys" too. How dare they fear or die from something so minor.

VOR and his ilk are the "brave Americans" sitting in their recliners feeling so brave while they pick their crotches.

Gravatar 2 points...

firstly, isn't sending even 'fake' anthrax a crime.

secondly, maybe it's time to remind everyone that the original anthrax terrorist hasn't been caught (are they even looking anymore)

Gravatar Sounds to me like he did the right thing. Afterall, whoever put the letter on his desk, and all others who's hands it passed enroute, could've been endangered. It may have been done as a joke, but you don't joke about bombs while you wait in line in the airport.

The fact that it was soap, meant someone had to intent to startle him into thinking his safety is at risk, that's more than O'Rielly can claim of his being on an Al Qaeda death list. This must've been sent by an O'Really fan.

Gravatar people who have made public threats to send anthrax in the mail in the past year: fox news correspondent ann coulter. people who think it's funny when someone does it: post columnist paula froelich.

i ask this in all sincerity: at what point does murdoch deserve a serious federal investigation? he's a foreign national who heads a company that publicly threatens US citizens with terrorist acts and laughs at those acts when they occur. if his name was Mohammed and he ran the Muslim Daily Tribune, he'd be naked in a cell in Syria by now. and even we crazy, anti-torture liberals would all agree that such a Mohammed would deserve to be seriously investigated and/or arrested. why not this clown?

Gravatar email to paula:

"Shame on you. Is this supposed to be funny?

I guess this kind of hatchet job is what folks can expect when they speak up. Toadies like you don't have to worry about it though."

Gravatar I just wrote to the NY Post editor and reminded them that acts of terrorism are no laughing matter.

Gravatar I can imagine some inbred Repug like VOR mailing such a letter.

Gravatar Hey Otto, you serious? Or are you just a prankster?

Bio-weapons are NOT the same as Viagra. The threat of Bio-weapons is not the same as having a boggle of the big V in your pocket while on a sex tour. (although I'm sure Rush would like to think he's going all nuk-le-ar with his unfortunate partners)

All Americans are and were in the anthrax attack TOGETHER. (unless you know something we don't, which if that is the case, please call the FBI immediately)

I'm with Nonny, if you make jury duty by some horrid happenstance, I want to feel assured that you will be immediately dismissed. Your ability to equate penis-enhancing drugs with WMD is alarming at worst.

Gravatar I just wonder how long it will be before they start carting away Truth-tellers like Olbermann "in the public interest" - How low will Americans let these bastards go before we Actually Do something?

Harry Reid failed us recently. And Pelosi brands Chavez as a thug in order to Defend George Bush!?

How many people does Bush GET TO KILL before we can accurately label him another young Hitler or describe him as Satan?

Will you let him Nuke Iran? Kill thousands of Iranians so he can keep attempting to corner the oil market in the Middle East and keep pimping the Military Complex? Will the American people continue to Help him Fund Mercs and Professional insurgents?

There is a whole slew of Military Officers who are more and more outraged by what this Administration is doing both to them, and in the name of this country. I hope more of them can speak out- because our self-centered politicians, pole-positioning themselves around each issue are Not going to save us. Only we can Force the Politicians to do our bidding. Time to get off the fence, Pelosi, Reid - All or nothing.

Gravatar I wonder if Coulter did it? Remember this?

Countdown’s Worst Person: Coultergeist with a little Savage mixed in

Keith nails Coulter as she just loves when the NY Times receives packages filled with powder. ...

Gravatar VOR,

FOAD.

Gravatar Tom | 09.27.06 - 2:52 pm | #

Are you suggesting Olbermann cribbed a tactic from Turdblossom's play book?

Gravatar The brave and noble Keith Olbermann had every reason to suspect his life was truly in danger. He has been one of the only journalists to call out this administration- something which is sure to incite revenge. The remaining 1/3 of this country, the useful idiots, who support this jingoist cabal are those with rabid nationalist ideals- the same kind of people who think this is funny; they are the kind willing to kill for their emporer, and they are the kind to be feared by those willing to speak up.

when it comes to death threats, there is no such thing as a practical joke. it is beyond unfunny and there has long-been zero-tolerance for it. but suddenly, a rare outspoken hero is targeted, and Ms. Froelich can point and laugh...

as childish and virtually innocent as it may seem, it suggests, especially coming from a propagandish gossip distractionist that day by day we move closer to the burgeoning fascism in this country.

Gravatar So it's ok for the Post to make light of a terrorist attack but it's not ok to even discuss withdrawing troops from Iraq. These people really have a twisted set of values.

Gravatar Of course Ann's pie in the kisser was an act of terrorism according to this ilk.

Gravatar Who gives a sh!t about Keith O???....What would the reaction be if it was Bill O'reilly? Would you people act like you care so much then???...

Gravatar Good Night and Good Luck. Indeed.

Gravatar Coulter has reportedly been seen hanging out in california before. . . .
http://anncoulterisawhore.blogspot.com/

Gravatar "...is this in any other news-source than the NY Post?"

Haven't yet found one. Though Editor & Publisher makes some good observations http://www.editorandpublisher.co..._id=1003187334:

Several leading news organizations in recent years have summonded "HazMat" teams and sent employees to the hospital after receiving letters with white powder at their offices. The Post itself received a so-called "anthrax letter" in the fall of 2001, affecting three staffers, who all recovered.

Gravatar I care about anyone who is the victim of a terrorist act like this. I don't care who it is. That's the point Kevin O. No one should make light of such an act.

Gravatar I just goggled Paula Froelich and clicked to the NY Post site, there was her picure ,looks like a younger Ann Coulter,Adams Apple and all! Does Ann have a twin?

Gravatar ThingFish.

Thanks for the reminder that The Post has called on "Haz Mat" as well. I am sure they saw it as a crime!

Gravatar Anthrax.... yes, that's another thing Bush has fought successfully. By invading Iraq and suspending the Constitution and waterboarding suspicious looking people, he's also eliminated a recurrence of smallpox, Three Mile Island, the clap, Barbarella, polio, the Archies, culottes, and consensual sex.

How many miracles are required before compulsive canonization is complete?

Gravatar Oh c'mon, the lollipop line was funny. Have a sense of humor.

Gravatar Right wing assholes.

Gravatar Terrorism is not funny. To make light of this would make it okay to also think a film about Bush being killed is funny.

Gravatar "I hope Bush and the Feds have something to say about this.
Total Information Awareness | 09.27.06 - 2:23 pm |"

TIA,

It was Bush and the Feds who sent the anthrax letters in the first place.

Gravatar Like I said, Olberman is a pussy. That is why all of you are defending him. You are in love with weak and spineless girly men. Afterall, they represent YOU Liberals so well.

Gravatar Oh c'mon, the lollipop line was funny. Have a sense of humor.
Bowlringer

Oh, we do have a sense of humor. It's just not a sick sense of humor. The lollipop line was an inappropriate jab designed to maintain the right-wingers' sense that only they are proper manly men, and everybody else is just a big baby.

Republicans ONLY laugh at the misfortune of others. They have no sense of humor about themselves. Any joke made at their expense, and they rail against the "liberal media"'s bias against Christians and Bush.

Gravatar I don't know his family situation, but if I received what may be a deadly substance that could kill my family, I just might overreact too.

Gravatar Actually, this will probably put Keith's ratings through the roof...more people will want to hear what he saying, that would provoke some silly asshole to risk prison time to silence him! I watched him once and that's all it took for me to become a regular viewer. So, like the Wallace attack on Clinton, these right-wing morons some times have their own scheme backfire big-time!

Gravatar Who gives a sh!t about Keith O???....What would the reaction be if it was Bill O'reilly? Would you people act like you care so much then???...
Kevin O | 09.27.06 - 3:16 pm | #

Bill O'Really would be the first to tell us if such a thing happened to him that he's brave enough to face the terrorist threat, and would put it all over his show how desperate people are getting to silence him. Olberman treated it as a police matter.

Gravatar Isn't the New York Post pretty much a supermarket gossip rag???

Gravatar The Post's response is more proof that reich-wingers DO NOT take terrorism seriously.

Gravatar I guess VOR is a big brave soldier putting his life in danger for the country. Oh wait. How can you be brave while sitting on your butt wanking to O'Reilly?

Gravatar Like I said, Olberman is a pussy. That is why all of you are defending him. You are in love with weak and spineless girly men. Afterall, they represent YOU Liberals so well.
VOR

"Girly men"? You mean like President Cheerleader, who was too much of a pussy to fight in 'Nam, whose daddy put that silver spoon up his nose, who lets Uncle Dick make all his decisions for him, and who was practically killed by a pretzel? Is Bush your "manly-man" idol? Do you have a poster of Bush over your bed, where you can gaze at it before you go to sleep?

Go play with your missile defense system, little boy.

Gravatar This incident should be brought up every time a right winger or corporate media shill pundit makes specious claims about "angry left" bloggers and hate mail. Think the Feds will investigate this one or do they have a double standard like the IRS investigating Liberal churches for anti-war sermons?

Gravatar VP, how dare you insult supermarket gossip rags.

Gravatar Keep spewing your insane garbage VOR. You've removed all doubt that your're a moron.

Now shove your head back up Dumbya's ass and suffocate.

Gravatar You are in love with weak and spineless girly men

You reich-wingers worship and elect a "man" who went AWOL and hid from combat duty. Priceless.

Gravatar "Keith Olbermann flipped out when he opened his home mail yesterday."

Gravatar Haven't they cleared out the White House a couple of times in the last year, like when that psycho crashed the gate with crack and a gun?

According to VOR Bush must be a sissy.

Gravatar This is what NYT reviewer Jennifer Senior meant about the right being FUNNY! See, that lollipop line, that's pure gold, unlike cranky ol' Sid Blumenthal and his stinky columns full of *anger*. Eww, icky anger, all biley and stuff.

Now, mocking people who receive death threats? Hi-larious!! Paula will be here all week, try the veal, and tip your servers!! Whoo ho.

Gravatar Here is my letter to Ms. Froelich.

-------------

Dear Ms. Froelich,

I'm writing in response to an article with your name on the byline in the New York Post, entitled "Powder Puff Spooks Keith".

I object to this passage:
> "...preliminary tests indicated the substance was harmless soap powder. However, that wasn't enough to satisfy Olbermann, who insisted on a checkup. He asked to be taken to St. Luke's Hospital, where doctors looked him over and sent him home. Whether they gave him a lollipop on the way out isn't known. Olbermann had no comment."
It's sarcastic, sophomoric to muse on whether or not Keith received a lollipop. That's alright for Page 6, but imagine if you had the same experience Keith did, and then Keith did a report on Countdown, asking with a trademark smirk if Paula Froelich had received a lollipop. You wouldn't like it.

Stick to the fluff of Page 6. You're not ready for prime-time.

Sincerely,

Bob O'Connor

---------------

Was that polite enough?

You know, it's as if conservatives actually believe that all "others" are not really human beings, that we are objects.

Gravatar Where is MACaca and his expected moronic banter? Perhaps VOR = MACaca?

Gravatar So this would be a federal offense, no? Is the FBI involved in trying to track down the sender?

Gravatar Ya I know Dr. Matt sometimes I just forget myself.

Gravatar Here's what I sent:

Dear Paula,

Your joking and flippancy at Keith Olbermann's expense is little more than what can be expected from second graders who have not been taught how to be polite and considerate, not to mention compassionate of others.

Since you no doubt have little if any of the aforementioned qualities, one can only hope that should something similar happen to you, Keith--nor anyone else--would not use his position in the media to exploit your misfortunes. You would only lash out with a vengeance, and claim that you would never stoop to that level. Sadly, you are one of many conservative mouthpieces: a dime a dozen.

Long Live "Countdown", and may we live to see many more shows like it so we can expunge our airwaves of the conservative filth to which we are constantly exposed. It really is a pox on our society.

Gravatar It's the New York Post..

In other words, who cares.

Plus KO will likely do more "damage" to this tabloid when he speaks about it.

:::

Gravatar What an asshole thing to do in reponse to a totally horrible thing to do.

But unfortunately, now all the lefties are screaming LOOK LOOK AT THE RIGHT LOOK WHAT THEY DO!

When, in fact, the letter sender is just some asshole somewhere.

It's entirely ridiculous to point a sweeping finger at the right and blame them all for this lone act of insanity.

Gravatar Email I sent - hasn't bounced back yet.

Paula,

You should be ashamed of yourself. You won't be, of course, because you're a gossip columnist and unfamiliar with the concept of shame, but you should be. I can only hope that you never have someone threaten you and your family with poison as a joke. Unbelievable.

Gravatar bowlringer, i lost my sense of humor with the right-wing about the same time they decided torture was a good thing and the constitution was a nuisance. wait, or was it when they lied us into a war for another countries oil resources, or wait, was it when they produced, just days after 9/11, an extremely lengthy and detailed document called the "patriot act" that undermines the bill of rights. republicans are so funny!!!

Gravatar Murdock's 'post' is sick. Did they get a kick out of cheney shooting his friend in the face?...a real knee slapper eh? Please boycott these sick people.

Gravatar this is the email i sent:

Paula--Because i ignore main stream news i have no
idea who you are and don't really care, but many
friends and loved ones still do. The air waves are the
property of THE PEOPLE.

anyway i do get my information from news sights such
as crooksandliars.com and enjoy highlights such as
Keith Olbermann. Mr. Olbermann is one of the few on TV
that actually speak TRUTH to power, something lacking
most everywhere else. Calling Keith a "Loudmouth" and
"shtick" is something that Criminals like gwbush and
KKKarl Rove like to have us believe. Are you in that
category as well? I suppose you'd like to torture any
one that you don'tr agree with also. Pranks like this
is highschool but Keith did the right thing to keep
himself safe. That is just disgusting but playing
like Limbaugh is worse. I recomend you get to know who
The People are. We're actually alot more mature than
you think.

To quote John Amato,

"You can be sure that it would be front page news for
The Post with pictures of Limbaugh going to the
hospital–including interviews with the police and
anyone one else they could find to make a statement.
Then there would be a tidal wave on FOX News–you know
the drill.

This is a new low for the right wing media of this
country. Since Keith didn’t go public with the story,
obviously he was doing what the police wanted and made
sure not to cause a scene. He took the correct
measures to ensure his safety as anyone of us would.
It’s an outrage that in these times, a public figure
would get a threatening letter and take it seriously,
and then the right wing media would make a joke of it.

Paula Froelich only serves to encourage the wackos on
so that they’ll continue this behavior. What a total
disgrace."

p.s. i bet you tormented the smart girls in high
school to make yourself feel adequate.

Gravatar Dave Rywall | 09.27.06 - 3:33 pm | #

No one is pointing a sweeping finger at the right, just a trash paper like the Post making light of it, and the trolls on this site insisting it's just a joke to threaten people. If a toy gun looks real enough in our hands, the cops would shoot us.

Gravatar I simply MUST hear his next one!

Gravatar jesus christ.

Gravatar Also your accusation could also be directed at right wing conservatives who accuse ALL liberals of being like controversial messages on liberal blogs. Then they ignore the possiblity that trolls could've posted them.

Gravatar Hmmm, like Olbermann was supposed to assume that it was not anthrax after Liberal politicians and media outlets recieved real anthrax and the perpetrator has yet to be caught by the Bush regime? Gee, that really makes sense, especially coming from the paranoid right wing and their corporate media shills who want us to be so frightened of terrorism that we'll vote against our own self-interest. Considering that not but a month or two ago we were asked to be very afraid of supposed liquid explosives being mixed on a plane when explosive experts and chemists claim that is not feasable.

Gravatar Who gives a sh!t about Keith O???....What would the reaction be if it was Bill O'reilly? Would you people act like you care so much then???...
Kevin O | 09.27.06 - 3:16 pm | #

We'd condemn it, not that we'd be heard over the wall-to-wall screaming that would come from the rightwing noise machine. We all loved hearing one of your heroes, Hugh Hewitt, declaring that since he works in Manhattan he's on the front lines. There you go, so much for rightwing stoicism and perspective.

Gravatar I guess Cheney is a he-man since he can shoot his friends in the face.

Gravatar The good news is that Olbermann is getting to them. I love how the Right has been desperately painting Keith as deranged - I think they're worried they might lose some of their base to him. he talks plain and makes sense. They're terrified of even having their minions listen to him.

Gravatar I sent an e-mail to her, but to jazz it up a bit, I used a pseudonym and a brand new e-mail address. With a load of angry e-mails, I was wondering if she would give them all to a spammer. Lets see if Hugh Johnson gets put on anyone's list.

The e-mail:

Dear Ms. Froelich,

The situation reported on today (Wednesday, September 27, 2006) regarding Keith Olbermann "flipping out" after receiving a fake anthrax letter was both unprofessional and unconsciounable.

If Mr. Olbermann had previously made an issue out of the situation, he would have deserved the treatment. However, this was not the situation, and the news story was handled with utter contempt.

Please let me express my understanding that partisan attacks have become acceptable in the media and it is clear that a line has been drawn within the media regarding who stands on the left and on the right. However, news stories such as this that were not publicized by the subject of the news story deserve to be handled with a degree of tact and respect.

I expected more from the New York Post and got less.

I will no longer purchase the New York Post during business trips to NYC and will avoid online contact with the publicatoin as well.

Very disappointing.

Hugh Johnson,
Cincinnati, OH

Gravatar so much for no terrorist attacks since 9/11.

Gravatar Could someone post a link to the New York Post, so we can express our disgust?

If we all do it seperately they'd use it to show how popular their website is, and make it look like we appprove of their sophomoric antics. Wait scratch that, make it Kindergarten.

Gravatar Hugh Johnson,

good letter.

The fact that Keith has kept this to himself speaks volumes. Limbaugh would have by now taken to the airwaves with hysteria.

Gravatar Would the NY Post print the same ridicule if the same envelope was received at the White House?

Gravatar so much for no terrorist attacks since 9/11.
meh | 09.27.06 - 3:43 pm |

Good point, the Bush regime apologists claim that there has been no terrorist attack on US soil since 9/11. What about the anthrax?

Gravatar ... I just checked out a new post over at Crooks and Liars and it seems That Keith Olbermann was sent a very convincing death threat in the mail. Seems that a certain Paula Froelich and Bill Hoffmann from New York Post got wind and decided to run a story. So what would their story say you might ask? Is it filled with condolences or tips on how to properly check your mail? No, it's nothing but derision and ridicule. Here's what they had to say. I've taken the liberty to highlight to piss-antish parts: ...

Gravatar Another act of terrorism.
Anthrax threats are terrorism.
Another example of how Bush is losing the war on Terrorism.

We continue to have to fight them "over here", even with that horrible mistake of a war "over there".

Heck of a job, Bushie.

Republican Failure.

Gravatar I suggest that at high noon, Eastern Time on Friday, each of us who is tiring of this nonsense face the NYPOST building from wherever we are, Brooklyn or Baghdad, raise a middle finger and shout, "C**T!!!"

A little Howard Beale-sh, I know, but still...

Gravatar I wonder how funny people at the NY Post thought it was when two of their staffers came down with cutaneous anthrax in the 2001 anthrax terror attacks WHICH HAVE NEVER BEEN SOLVED.

A Ms. Huden and an unidentified 34 year old NY Post mailroom worker were both infected with anthrax during the wave of anthrax killings. They both survived, but I'll bet it wasn't so funny to them to know they were victims of a deliberate act of terror and I'll bet their fellow employees were shitting a brick for a while.

Yes, I assume that Paula Froelich's first response if she received a death threat with white powder enclosed would be to cut a line and snort it or use it to wash her face.

Gravatar The war in Iraq has become a “cause celebre” for Islamic extremists, breeding deep resentment of the U.S. that probably will get worse before it gets better, federal intelligence analysts conclude in a report at odds with President Bush’s portrayal of a world growing safer.

In the bleak report, declassified and released Tuesday on Bush’s orders, the nation’s most veteran analysts conclude that despite serious damage to the leadership of al-Qaida, the threat from Islamic extremists has spread both in numbers and in geographic reach.

Bush and his top advisers have said the formerly classified assessment of global terrorism supported their arguments that the world is safer because of the war. But more than three pages of stark judgments warning about the spread of terrorism contrasted with the administration’s glass-half-full declarations.

“If this trend continues, threats to U.S. interests at home and abroad will become more diverse, leading to increasing attacks worldwide,” the document says. “The confluence of shared purpose and dispersed actors will make it harder to find and undermine jihadist groups.”

Gravatar Dean, thanks should go to the staff of E&P. I wasn't even aware there was so much of this sort of crap going on. Have a feeling Olbermann's letter is linked to this http://www.crooksandliars.com/20...a-fantasy-list/ in some way.

~

Gravatar Does anyone here work in the media? Call the NYC Department of Health and ask "what does the DOH recommend if a high profile person in the media receives an envelope containing white powder and a threat?"

Gravatar Dave Rywall - there is some validity in your point that the letter sender is just some anonymous asshole, and we don't know for certain he's a rightwinger, and to condemn the entirety of the right for a single act of domestic terrorism (and that's what this was), is as narrowminded as those on the right condemning those of us on the left.

However.

The letter included with the fake poisoned powder 'warned Olbermann, who’s a frequent critic of President Bush’s policies, that it was payback for some of his on-air shtick'. Olbermann was selected as a target because of his outspoken political views. Leftwing political views. It's a reasonable assumption that the person who sent this threat wasn't criticising his choice of ties.

Moreover, this one single act is then compounded by a truly vile article by a blatantly rightwing 'journalist'. And we're already seeing the influx of rightwingers on this thread telling us on the left to 'lighten up', it was only a joke, what a bunch of cowards and girlie-men Olbermann and those who don't find this at all funny must be.

So far, I haven't seen any on the right expressing any outrage that this has happened to ANY American citizen, regardless of their political views.

So although I recognise you do have a valid point, I'm still hard pressed not to place the blame squarely on the right and the insidious culture of fear and loathing they've instilled in our current culture. If you don't like it, then it's really up to you on the right to do something about it, not the left.

Gravatar The only things in the article that paint him as a "pussy" are her opinions. I'll formulate my own opinions though, thanks.

You're right VOR he should have handled it better. Like how Cunningham handled getting busted.

Now there is a guy who's not a pussy.

Gravatar The only people who wouldn't freak if some jerk sent them a envelope filled with white powder are idiots.

we all know that the police love the reich-wing schitt because they get to toy with people. Historically, the police hate the left, anyway. So we have a person who challenges the people who want to sic the police on the rest and the police make light of it. Or maybe, as was the case when I went to them for help, not one of them actually wanted to do their job!

So the two things that happened to Olbermann are what we are all afraid of but unfortunately may have to learn to expect: 1) there are people who are willing to kill you for their politicall point of view; 2) the people in charge of protecting you will probably NOT give a schitt about protecting you.

America is in deep trouble.

Gravatar "And WE ARE WINNING!!" Have you really looked around our country lately, did katrina make you proud. you're doing a heck of a job brownie. how about jeff gannon, does he make you proud? how about the majority of iraquis feeling they would be better off without our presence? proud yet. how about traveling world wide and desguising your us citizenship because of the verbal if not physical abuse hurled you way. Proud yet? Let's not even talk about how the current admin has shortchanged our rank and file military in numbers, in arms and finally in VA hospital care when they return maimed and wounded. But hell, you're a proud supporter of out troops and of old codpiece bush himself. you're winning and the country is going up in smoke. i only pray for change come november and hopefully there will be something to salvage.

Gravatar The wingers like to be dismissive of situations in order to marginalize them.

Rush Limbaugh and his comparing Abu Ghraib to a college prank or hazing.

Kathleen Parker and her saying George Allen's sister's claim that he was sadistic and held by her heals over the rail at Niagara Falls was "sibling rivalry."

Some winger I can't remember who claimed the abuse and torture of prisoners was 'not being nice' to them.

Some dipshit and Iraq will just be a comma in the history books.

I just want to make sure people's anger is directed solely at the Post where it belongs. Yes, they're on the right, but the overall subject of classlessly ridiculing a potential anthrax attack is what should be the topic of conversation.

Gravatar That article was disgusting. SHAME on Paula Froehlich. I hope everyone here tells her what they think of her disgraceful article.

Olbermann actually gets something threatening in the mail, reports it, and gets himself checked out medically. Yeah, what a pansy. Anyone care to imagine how O'Reilly or Limbaugh would have reacted, or this Paula woman? Yes, expose their hypocrisy like we have 1000 times before. Yawn. The owners/editors of the Post are still the owners/editors of the post and they will still continue their Pro-Bush campaign of slamming on anyone who Speaks truth out loud.

It's time to put some real pressure on the Democratic Leadership to stop being so fricking polite and come after Bush like Olbermann. I mean really, we are lucky the founding fathers didnt sit around and wait for a newcaster and some market research before they stood up for what is Right!

We KNOW what they are doing to America. Its time for our leaders to grow some balls and Fight back HARD. We have to convince our Reps that they won't lose their precious positions if they take a stand...

I know that Keith Olbermann is not everyone's cup of tea. But for a reporter, if that is what you supposedly are, to make light, poke fun, at someone receiving a suspicious powder in the mail is not only irresponsible, it is shameful.

Perhaps you are too busy making you silly little jokes, or sucking your own lollypop, to remember that people have received lethal substances in the mail. People have died. A competent reporter would have known that. Evidently you are not one of those.

Still if nothing else, you should be ashamed. But then anyone who could have written what you did would not be ashamed, that would take integrity and class. Two things it is only too apparent you do not possess.

Gravatar Dear Paula Froelich,

As a New Yorker, I am acutely aware of the real threats we face by our choice to stand by this great city in the wake of the worst terrorist attacks. We all take our security seriously, and by our nature as New Yorkers, we tend to look after our fellow neighbors, as well. Regardless of Mr. Olbermann's political viewpoints or rhetoric, he deserved better than he received by your recent Page 6 article.

First of all, sending Anthrax, as well as sending fake Anthrax, is a crime in the United States. It is illegal. Here we have a cable news personality that has been the target of a terrorist act. Not my definition; the government's. At the very least, it should be reported in the main spread of the paper, and not solely in the gossip column.

Second, since this act falls within the current terrorism statutes, I sincerely hope that the New York Post will do it's civic duty and investigate the story some more. I would like to read a followup report about the case and the government's investigation of it.

Third, while I have no objection to the factual reporting you made in your column of the event in question, it was inexcuseably poor taste to write, "Whether they gave him a lollipop on the way out isn't known." It was Mr. Olbermann's perogative to receive a health checkup after such a legitimate scare, and it's fair to say that many people would do the same in a similar situation. It was uncalled for to mock the man for taking normal preventative measures, especially since he was the victim of a crime. I hope that the New York Post will recognize this and maintain its high standards by issuing an apology to Mr. Olbermann.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Hartman

You're living proof of that fact.

Gravatar What would have happened if that same thing would have happened to anyone in the bush cabal?

Instant lockdowns, mega-investigations, mega-news coverages on all msm, mega-"kill them all before they get here and kill your families" messages DROANING on the airwaves, "stay the course" messages droaned out repeatedly and crammed down our throats, etc.

Who was threatened?
A man who is a threat to the SECURITY and POWERS of the present day CABAL in power...NOT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE in power and REALLY ..."NOT LIKED" AT ALL, as the polls, and the rest of the world, repeatedly show.

So who is the real THREAT to us ("we the people")??
TERRORISTS?? Or those whose tatics will STOOP TO ANYTHING, including breaking the laws, "REPEATEDLY", hiding the real TRUTH from the public ("we the people")?

WHO HAS ACTUALLY TAKEN AWAY OUR RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS, and WEAKENED US... AS A NATION?
O.B.L., or bush & his crew ???

bush has, and always will be a... "failure"!
Only now, daddy and the Saudias CAN'T bail him out, as they always did in the past.

Gravatar Proves that the wingnuts are terrorists.

Gravatar As stated above soap powder has been used as a cover for cocaine, and could be a cover for other poisons as well. It's not just his health, but the health of all those who handled the envelope within the office.

Trolls just aren't what they used to be. Clearly the clever ones realized they were losing the war and went home, leaving the fine specimens like Cpb to carry on the fight against reality. Yesterday I speculated about bob's mental capacity, today he answered my question.

Let's dissect this one point, for a moment. When gas prices were rising, they brayed that the chimporer had no control of this "free market" process. Now they bleat that Bush, the All Compassionate, PBUH, is responsible for the lowered price of gasoline. To quote, "because HE CAN!"

So what is it, bob, or does it really matter? It is obvious that your vote can be purchased by reducing the price of gas by $.10 a gallon. Sad, logic is to dittoheads is what salt is to slugs.

Thanks. While I appreciate the eloquence that many here have put into their letters to that stupid woman, I can't help feeling they won't accomplish much. It's NOT about her feelings, or her understanding, what drives people like her is CAREERISM. An entity like the Post feels it needs someone who trashes liberals, to fill that spot, because they've decided their target audience wants those opinions expressed. This woman doesn't matter in and of herself, if she left they'd find someone else as ambitious and unprincipled to fill it.

But there have to be others at the paper, who normally wouldn't lift a finger regarding some stupid smear directed at the left...who, in this case, can be reached, because SOMEONE THEY KNOW was badly damaged by the same type of anonymous letter-writing scum who sent that to Keith.

They're who we should be writing. There's no way they'd find this amusing.

Please leave the comedy to the comedy writers, your journalistic integrity is already in question. Gravatar I should probably read the comments first but I'm too upset. Mailing fake anthrax to his HOME? Scary stuff.

I realize this is kind of a backdoor approach, but go to espnradio.com and send a email to Dan Patrick. He and K.O. are good friends and spend an hour each day together on the program (11-12 PST). Tell him to condemn this loudly and often.

I also sent emails to the other ESPN radio hosts saying essentially the same thing.

Imagine being terrorized at your HOME for exercising the right of free speech and and freedom of the press.

DEMAND an investigation.

Gravatar The best thing about this whole dust-up is how scared Olbermann has the Right and all he does is go on the air and talk five nights a week. The only reason they would be this panicky is if he was actually causing defections from their side. Maybe the Kool-Aid is wearing off.

Gravatar The Post should be ashamed of itself.

Olbermann is one of the few members of the mainstream media with the courage to speak out, openly, and honestly, about the disaster that is the Bush administration. The letter sent to him was nothing less than a right-winged terrorist attack aimed at intimidating him into silence.

Rather recognizing that fact, and decrying the Gestapo-like effort to silence a vocal administrative critic, the comPost has chosen to mock Olbermann for having the foresight to insist on a check-up after the preliminary tests indicated that the substance was harmless.

That is certainly an odd response for a newspaper in NYC, where so many first responders at Ground Zero were injured after the Federal government told them that “preliminary tests” indicated that the air there was not toxic.

You owe Mr. Olbermann a huge apology

Gravatar I wonder how often Tommy Chong gets white powder in the mail?

Gravatar This scenario reminds me of when I saw a rather plump lady at the Repub Convention wearing a purple bandaid to mock Sen. Kerry's war wounds ... their hatred, mocking, and bullying tactics will however, I believe, be their downfall this November.

Gravatar This juvenile threat by the GOP will do nothing to Olberman but make him more detrmined to speak the truth to the american people. They've just given him an injection of "superpower" - now let's watch his smoke!

Gravatar Many were wearing that bandaid, and during a time of war yet. So much for their support "for the troops."

Of course Clinton went crazy on FOX according to them.

Gravatar "blame it on Osama"

"blame it on Sadam"

"blame it on Clinton"

Who actually DID take away our RIGHTS, in a way Osama could ONLY ..."DREAM ABOUT"??

Did Osama sell our ports to UAE?
Did Sadam keep our borders WIDE OPEN?
Who wiretappened ALL OUR COMMUNICATIONS and ALL our DATA?

Gravatar I sent a letter to Paula Froelich and to the editorial board. Here is what I got back.

I am glad you thought it was funny to mock the white powder that MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann received in the mail the other day. I’m sure that the family of the postal worker who died due to Anthrax a few years ago would find that funny too. Just because you don’t agree with Olbermann does not give you license to find humor in a death threat. I hope that you never have to go through that.

Response--

I don't normally respond to readers' letters, but I'll make an exception here.

I've never watched Mr. Olbermann's show, so I'm more or less agnostic on him personally.

But, for the record, we had an actual anthrax attack here five years ago; three of my colleagues (including my personal assistant) were hospitalized -- thankfully, only briefly -- so, in fact, we *have* gone through that.

And I daresay we handled it with a minimum of public hysteria.

All the best,

Bob McManus

Editorial Page Editor

Gravatar I'll refrain from personal attacks. I'm content to have demonstrated that my respondent's argument - the argument, not the respondent, mind you - has demonstrated a self-contradiction. A layperson, that would be Keith O., referred the powder to a Hazmat team.

'How could a layperson tell the difference between anthrax and soap powder?' I asked.

I was given the answer, 'by calling a Hazmat team.' Such is the consistency of the argument tendered by my colleague on the right.

Further personal remarks will be refrained from, from this corner. Any derision and contempt one might infer from my previous remarks, I grant my esteemed respondent full rein to imagine, as if I was actually expressing them. I encourage him to, frankly.

Gravatar And I daresay we handled it with a minimum of public hysteria.

All the best,

Bob McManus

Sir! Truly, that will not do!

Gravatar Yeah it's pretty obvious the bias in this. Seriously, I can't imagine anyone else they would have made the lollipop crack about. Usually this sort of thing is taken seriously. I certainly don't recall any jokes from the mainstream media when white powder was discovered multiple times following 911. Somehow it's made comical when it happens to Olbermann.

The other thing about this is that I would expect a wisecrack like that from the Jon Stewart show but it's very unprofessional for a newspaper to make a wisecrack like that, especially about a topic that is serious. And this was serious. By the President's own definition this is an act of terrorism. It doesn't matter whether it was soap powder or anthrax, the intent was the same, to terrorize someone and/or the public.

The person that sent this letter to Keith is such a coward. Hard to guess whether it was most likely Bill-O or the Coultergeist that was behind this...

A lapse in civility?

Shocking!

Gravatar Dear Ms. Froelich,
I am writing in regards to the sarcastic comments that you published on Wednesday, September 27, 2006. I find it distressing that in the post 9/11 environment you would find it acceptable to ridicule a public figure for treating safety and security as a laughing matter. If a similar letter had arrived at the offices of the NY Post, the building would have been evacuated and all personnel exposed to said letter would have been taken to local hospitals for evaluation.

It seems to me that Mr. Olberman was not over-reacting, but was doing exactly what the authorities have instructed us to do in these situations; contact the authorities and allow ourselves to be evaluated by educated medical personnel. If a similar letter had arrived at the offices of the NY Post, the building would have been evacuated, and all personnel exposed to said letter would have been taken to local hospitals for evaluation. As a matter of fact, that is exactly what happened in 2001 when such a letter was delivered to the offices of the NY Post and 2 of your co-workers were infected with the anthrax virus.

Thank goodness that your coworkers survived, and that when they reported the incident they were treated with concern and respect, both of which you failed to show to Mr. Olberman.

I sincerely hope you re-think your public attack of a fellow American citizen and have the decency to print an apology.

Sincerely,

Gravatar This is just unbelivable, if this happened to Couric, o reilly, Rumsfield,Bush,Hume or anyone of importance to the Murdoch regime, this would be serious and portrayed as such.

Olberman gets ridiculed and portrayed as a coward. BS, in my opinion but these are the individuals that we are dealing with.

Gravatar CD - in what way is your comment relevant to this discussion? How in the world can you connect bashing KO for being a pussy with me searching for WMD's? How do you in any way, shape, or form draw a correlation between the two?

Gravatar Keith knows he has to watch his back. That makes him a very brave man indeed. The fact that he followed up on this potential anthrax mailing makes him also smart. Had he assumed this was just a crank mailing he would deprive all the others who handled this the opportunity to know whether or not they had been put at risk. These are dangerous times. There are those who are willing to commit crimes to silence their opponents. Good reasons for fear, that's why Keith is such a brave man.

Gravatar VOR: Are you aware of the psychological tendencies of arsonists to remain at or return to the scene of the crime to witness the destructive results of their actions?

Figuratively speaking, you are the one 'pissing the most on this fire' at a high profile media Blog that would be sure to dissect this travesty.

Gravatar Please - Keith has nothing to fear other than irrational nutjobs, which BOTH sides need to fear.

There are just as many wacky left-wingers that would love to knock off O'Reilly, et al, for the things they say.

Like the old saying goes - if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

If Olberman is "man" enough to say the things he does, than he should be "man" enough to deal with the consequences. In fact, he should go on the TV tonite and call out the asshole that sent him the letter and call him a coward. But he won't becuase he is probably too afraid to.

Gravatar Notice the Trend here? NY Times gets White Powder and Now Keith Olbermann?

I Honestly hope that the NY Post or other Faux News outlets get hit like this. Will they be so flipant when it happens in their own back yard??

Gravatar S.D. talk like that will give them a foot to stand on when they blame liberals.

Gravatar ultramaroon - are you inferring in some way that I would be the one that sent the letter? If you are, not only is your handle quite fitting, but you are seriously walking the line of slander and libel. Maybe your IP should be tracked so I could sue you for defamation if character.

You don't want to STOMP them.

And sometimes, it's actually fun.

Gravatar What I don't get is how anyone can take unsupported accusations as fact. Even going so far as stating Olbermann announced getting the letter.

It will be interesting to see what KO will actually say about this incident. I'd go with saying nothing or waving it off as something that happens now days (unfortunately) to public persons.

Gravatar A couple of years ago a women was sent to jail for sending fake anthrax, I think to her ex. The judge in the case went ballistic in his condemnation of what the wench did. He didn't find it funny and called it terrorism and I believe she was convicted under terrorism laws, so how is this anything less? And to anyone who defends shit like this is no better than the person who sends it.

Gravatar Two days ago, four state offices in Denver were emptied because of threatening envelopes containing white powder.

Would this pathetic excuse for a reporter have ridiculed an entire state?
The state took the same action as Olbermann and yet he is being ridiculed.

I am telling you, these Republican nuts spurred on by the likes of Coulter and Hannity and Limbaugh are dangerous.

This is something that needs to be put into the perspective of inciting personal harm. It is no longer "only a joke" as most of these people say when cornered.

Gravatar If Olberman is "man" enough to say the things he does, than he should be "man" enough to deal with the consequences. In fact, he should go on the TV tonite and call out the asshole that sent him the letter and call him a coward. But he won't becuase he is probably too afraid to.

Strawbs,
Its not anthrax or a letter bomb, but I do find this contrast quite interesting. Last week there was a thread making fun of Cyrus Nowrasteh, the director of 'Path to 9/11' for his article in the WSJ taking objection to the slurs and mischaracterizations from the left. In the article he mentions he received death threats. Here is the thread http://www.crooksandliars.com/20...air/#more- 10356
I made a comment that it was cheap shot (AW...Whassamatter) to chide him for being taken aback by the media's unfair scrutiny of him without mentioning the fact he had received death threats. Here are some of the comments I received:

Movie stars get death threats every day.
mudkitty

Dennis,
Death threats? BFD. I get those when I get an LTE printed in the AJC. Woop-dee-fucking-doo.
Jeff Boatwright

Why do you believe Cy when he says he received death threats? Do you believe everything in print? Especially from known liars?
Jeff Boatwright

Death threats are a fact of life in modern fame
Daniel K

Of course it is possible to send death threats against yourself to bolster a case, or in some cases insurance fraud.
ysbaddaden

death threats to the cyrus 'the slug' nowrasteh?
well, first you would have to believe a person that deals in lies. which is a leap into the chasm.
Samson

Perhaps you are right. However, in this case, even with death threats, my compassion is small. He is a whiner, even if part of what he is whining about is receiving "death threats."

Death threats, huh? Well, frankly, I expect him to be as truthful about that as he was about Clinton's policy on terrorists. The man seems to be an inveterate fantasist.
arron

Nice liberals all, I'm sure. Peaceniks, too. But hypocritical? Who's to say. Between the comments regarding death threats against Nowrasteh then and for Olbermann now, you be the judge.

Dear Ms. Froelich,

Have you forgotten why people are frightened by white powder mailed to them, why the United States has gotten to a point where a HASMAT unit will "rush" to the scene?

What makes this a joke? Mr. Olbermann is a fellow citizen of our great nation, our fellow citizen. No matter whom this happened to, be it Rush Limbaugh, you, my grandmother, or any other American; it is a time to show compassion and caring, for your countrymen, not distain and loathing.

I hope you or your family never receives an envelope filled with white powder. I hope you ask for forgiveness for being so callous and cruel to an American in distress.

Sincerely,
HiSee

Gravatar Strawberry

I found this site a few weeks ago and was just shocked. It is dedicated strictly to hating Olbermann. The comments are absolutely some of the most crazy talk I have ever read.

If I were the cops I would start talking to some of these people.

Gravatar I bet Bill O is jealous that he didn't get the letter. Oh my gosh, can you imagine the response if that happened? I predict Bill will have to beat himself up or send himself fake anthrax or do something to show he is just as vulnerable as Keith -- hey, more so cuz he's the Culture Warrior or whatever the hell he is calling himself these days.

Gravatar Dennis

And I am sure Cy's death threats contained an unknown white substance, there is a difference.

A letter of threat is just a letter but when it contains unknown substances it is entirely another matter.

Gravatar How did the post know Keith was panicked or that he 'flipped out' unless they had someone there - at Keith's house waiting for a reaction?

Gravatar dennis, if you don't see the difference between a comments section and actually going out and mailing something, then you are not worth debating. Not one of those commenters(and I know them well), would EVER make those comments in a public forum. This is an echo chamber for like minded people, WE VENT HERE SO WE DON'T GO OUT AND ACTUALLY KILL PEOPLE WHO DISAGREE WITH US. I asked of actual events where we followed through with shit like that, and I can honestly say, I can't think of an ACTUAL EVENT. See the difference?

Gravatar It is clear that the right is scared because the truth is coming out. Looks like impeachment by spring. Keith is doing his job, and doing it damn well.

Gravatar Pat, remember when Bill-O was telling callers on his radio show that they would be getting a visit from Faux security for even mentioning the name Olbermann on his show? If Bill-0 ever got an envelope, he would have Robert S Mueller and a camera crew on the scene, crying for Geraldo to comfort him.

Gravatar Even the Dalai Llama says he gets pissed once in a while.

Gravatar The right has much to lose in November so be aware of diabolical schemes and scare tactics like this one to Keith Olberman. Keith is a true patriot, though, and this will only serve to energize him. Go Keith!

Gravatar IMPEACH - INDICT - IMPRISON
NO MAN IS ABOVE THE LAW!

Gravatar It's little wonder that the Ridiculous Right would make jokes about an act of terrorism; after all, they seemed to think that Bill Orally's calling for attacks on San Francisco and mAnn Coulter's statement that a SC Justice should be poisoned were also somehow "humorous."

Gravatar I just wrote Dan Abrams and let him know that MSNBC, not Oberlmann, should soundly trash this reporter for making a joke of this situation.

Gravatar Olbermann has been pounding these clowns with the truth and its obvious that he has struck a lot of nerves.

Its not surprising that he didn't publicize the incident, that is not his style. Such banal, whiney tactics are best left to Falafel Boy!

The neocons have a lot to lose in November and should the House or Senate change hands the investigations will begin. They are crapping in their pants because they have broken so many laws and stand to do serious jail time.

This isn't your usual midterm elections, this is an all out battle for the soul of America.

Get involved, register to vote, vote, donate time and money to campaigns... this si it folks, its now or never.

Gravatar So what happens when soap gets sent to Murdock? Funny huh?

Gravatar Regarding how much the "authorities" know about anthrax in the mail:

"The same day the anthrax letter was opened in Daschle’s office, authorities realized it had passed through the mail center in Brentwood, which handles all District of Columbia mail, as well as the Trenton facility, which postmarked the letter. For a week, however, health officials and postal supervisors insisted that workers were not at risk because, they asserted, anthrax spores could not escape sealed letters.

Postal officials, reportedly acting upon the advice of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), decided not to test employees and kept the two facilities open. While congressmen and their staffs received treatment and time off, postal workers were kept in the dark about potential dangers and were neither tested nor given medical assistance."

How many postal workers died of anthrax? I recall at least two died and one was very ill..

Just goes to show you what the "authorities" know about anthrax in letters....

Gravatar Strawberry,
Searching for "anthrax hoax". So far Clayton Lee Wagner gets the most hits. The closest I could find was the B'nai B'rith case. But that was attributed to someone claiming to be with the 'Counter Holocaust Lobbyists of Hillel'. Don't sound very lefty to me.

P.S. Got this from "The Anthrax Letters: A Medical Deceive Story" http://darwin.nap.edu/books/0309...X/html/ 160.html. Looks like the whole book online.

Gravatar Limbaugh's response to this will be:

A. He made the whole thing up.

B. Someone from the left sent it to him hoping the right would get blamed.

C. Let's go get some Viagra and find a couple of hookers.

D. None of the above.

Gravatar dinkface
That's funny, because that's exactly what a few on here said about Cyrus Nowrasteh's death threats. At least the A. option anyway, along with the B. option; only from the right instead.

Gravatar Here is the commentary I posted to this unfeeling bitca:

"Ms. Froelich:

I recently read your "POWDER PUFF SPOOKS KEITH" story on newsman Keith Olberman

I am shocked at your thoughtless and inane attempt at humor regarding this
possible (and fortunately non-lethal) anthrax attack on newsman Keith Olberman.
Mr. Olberman was only exercising understandable caution with what could have been
a deadly situation for him had it actually been anthrax. You treated his understandably
shocked reaction as if he were a frightened child. I would have loved to see how you
yourself would have handled it had it been done to you.

I dearly hope you are never placed in a similar situation. There was nothing to joke
about, and your boorish attempt at humor in this situation was totally uncalled for.
At this point I believe you should be severely censured, and if I was your supervisor,
I would have fired you on the spot and had you escorted out of the building.

Furthermore, even if you do not like Mr. Olberman's politics, as a fellow newsperson,
you should respect his right to live free of such threats upon his person and vigorously
denounce similar attacks upon any member of the news media. You failed miserably to do this.
Obviously, you felt no shame and I remind you at least one other newsperson died in a similar
attack not so many years ago.

It is my opinion you should issue a retraction of your hateful commentary, and
offer a public apology to Mr. Olberman."

And because my father raised me to be a gentleman, I left out what I really wanted to say: "PISS OFF, you skanky HO"

Gravatar This is my response to Paula. I did try to be nice but I just couldn't resist a little vituperation:
---------------------------------
Dear Ms. Froelich,

Just when I think conservatives can't be more disgusting, there is always one of you to prove me wrong.

Then again, a responsible journalist would want to know what the status of the anthrax investigation before they dismiss and ridicule another commentator's legitimate concerns.

What the fuck is wrong you right wing nuts?

I would really like a response. I really want to know that the fuck is wrong with you right wing nuts?

Sincerely,

Gravatar So Rupert Murdoch owns NY Post?
The CONservative Rupert Murdoch?

http://www.americanprogress.org/...RJ8OVF& b=122948

MURDOCH THE BUSH SUPPORTER: Murdoch told Newsweek before the war, Bush "will either go down in history as a very great president or he'll crash and burn. I'm optimistic it will be the former by a ratio of 2 to 1…One senses he is a man of great character and deep humility." [Newsweek, 2/17/03]

Gravatar Here's what I emailed the Ann Coulter wannabe:

Ms. Froelich,

What a classless little person you are. Unfunny diatribe you wrote about Keith Olbermann today. Making fun of someone receiving a terrorist threat. How low can you go Paula? And a gossip columnist? Your parents must be proud. Mr. Olbermann has more integrity in his little finger than you have in your entire body. At least I didn't give your nonsense any hits on the web. That's what you crave right?

Let me ask you. If you received some white powder via U.S. mail, what would you do? Snort it?

Maybe you're just an "acerbic" kind of person who likes to poke fun at celebrities. By all means, keep it up, it's guaranteed under our First Amendment rights. But I'll tell you this: I
wouldn't line my bird cage with your column. Parrot crap deserves a better fate.

Try to have a nice day!

Solid
Nowhere near New York City but paying attention

P.S. Acerbic doesn't apply to K.O. Impassioned is much more appropriate.

Gravatar Maybe if we falsely accuse Paula of sending the letter she'll take it more seriously.....

Gravatar The same thing should be done to Murdoch’s NY Post.

However, Sending a fake letter like that is a crime.

But if I was on the jury judging some one who sent letters like that to Murdoch’s NY Post I'd vote not guilty.

A pity I would tell the press after the trial, a pity it wasn't real. I still would have voted not guilty.

Gravatar It would not only be stupid and foolish and illegal and unpatriotic to mail white powder to the New York Post offices -- it would be pointless. The people who slap that fishwrap together are probably so knee-deep in blow that they wouldn't even notice a few flakes of soap powder.

"YEAH!!! LIBERALS ARE DESTROYING AMERICA!!! HOLY SHIT!!! THIS IS FRONT PAGE STUFF!!!"... If I had to get myself thinking like that every day, I know *I'd* have to be all coked up!

Gravatar The incident is not humorous. This act should carry the same penalty as the real thing.

It is important that Keith handled the situation as the intelligent adult he is. The rag is not important. This should resurface the unsolved case most of America has forgotten.

Gravatar Dennis, if some liberal pretended to be on a non-existant FBI gathered
Al Qaeda death list, you'd be laughing your ass off, and lording it over us. Oh Really provides us with such fodder every day.

Gravatar aquarius2, olbermannwatch? Oh my God, this is so sad. Wow, I guess you havn't really made it in the news biz until you have your very own hate group/website. Um, where do the trolls find the time to hate AND blog?
Strawberry
--------------
The inconceivable aspect is that this kind of hate can actually inspire some very unhinged people to do some very horrible things.

Glad that Keith's mail only contained harmless soapy substances, needless to say!

Gravatar lets see...another anthrax attack(fake this time)and still no repugs have been hit by these psycho's.....what's that tell you?

Gravatar Come on Dennis, be real, be fair.

Gravatar It wouldn't suprise me if Lufa O'LLiely know's more about this than he lets on

Gravatar Sound like something that Michelle Malkin would encourage.

Gravatar Keith just finished his commentary on the NY Post. It's clip worthy, John.

Gravatar Keith responds!

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15036633/

"We will not be intimidated here."

Gravatar Don't forget that The New York Post was itself an intended target of the 2001 attacks. For them to publish this now is absolutely beyond the pale.

http://www.electric-loft.org/wp/?p=667

Gravatar paula.froelich@nypost.com just got this in her inbox:

I just want to thank you and your newspaper for showing all Americans where you stand in the war on terror, with the terrorists. In your story, you did not just defy the FBI request to keep the story quiet, you did so with glee. The reason you did this of course is simple, you just couldn't pass up a chance to smear a critic of the Bush administration.

The right wing is losing it's appeal to America, your hypocrisy, bulling and lies are getting old. Folks are ready for a change. Keep at it just like you are doing, we on the left are always pleased to welcome those who are seeing the light.

Gravatar To Paula Froelich

I am a member of New York City's Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps, which was formed after 9/11. Anthrax is no joke, lady. If I were to advise someone on what to do if they received an envelope with powder in it, I would tell them to call 911 and get to a hospital to have baseline lab work taken, so that if that person becomes ill later, we can compare baseline lab work with current lab work. May I remind you that 5 people are dead from anthrax mailed in envelopes and nobody has been arrested as of 5 years later?

To write an article suggesting that it is hilarious hysteria for someone to call the police and visit an emergency room after receiving something which looks exactly like the mode of delivery of anthrax spores which killed 5 Americans in 2001 is an insult to public health professionals who give this exact advice to citizens. Call the police. See a doctor.

I'd like to know what you would do if something like that was mailed to your home. Maybe you'd just chuckle and toss in the wastebasket, but you know what? I bet you wouldn't. And I really hope that anyone who read your article doesn't disregard public and personal safety measures because you describe those measures in such a sarcastically sniggering way.

Gravatar KO was great (as usual) in tonight's broadcast.

Fuck Rupert Murdick and his NY Post! And, of course, Ms. Froelich.

Gravatar Keith Olbermann is the Right Wings worst nightmare come true, a progressive with a microphone and a nightly news program who will not be a Stenographer. When he said in his last commentary that the free pass for the Whitehouse was over, he was not joking.

Unfortunatly, those bastards that worship at the cult of Bush are crazy. They believe that anybody who opposes the Administration is a minion of Satan who must be destroyed. Keith should consider body guards.

Gravatar Signed My Real Name and Title | 09.27.06
-------

Great letter! Hope it's read.

Gravatar I sent her an email...asking if she'd think it's funny receiving a package in the mail like that.

Then I questioned if anyone had been arrestd for those incidences, post-9/11.

What a bitch, excuse me.

Gravatar I urge everyone to write. This is the letter that I wrote. We need to stand up against this type of journalism!

To whom it may concern:

I was recently made aware of your comments regarding the death threat
sent to Keith Olberman. You wrote:

"Keith Olbermann flipped out when he opened his home mail yesterday.
The acerbic host of "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" was terrified
when he opened a suspicious-looking letter with a California postmark
and a batch of white powder poured out. A note inside warned
Olbermann, who's a frequent critic of President Bush's policies, that
it was payback for some of his on-air shtick. The caustic commentator
panicked and frantically called 911 at about 12:30 a.m., sources told
The Post's Philip Messing. An NYPD HazMat unit rushed to Olbermann's
pad on Central Park South, but preliminary tests indicated the
substance was harmless soap powder. However, that wasn't enough to
satisfy Olbermann, who insisted on a checkup. He asked to be taken to
St. Luke's Hospital, where doctors looked him over and sent him home.
Whether they gave him a lollipop on the way out isn't known. Olbermann
had no comment."

I am sorry. Now we are to to take terrorist threats with a sense of
humor? Somehow, when it involves someone with a differing point of
view than yours, it is supposed to be regarded as a big joke? I guess
I'm just one of those crazy liberals with a mental disorder, but
frankly, I feel that the tone in which you reported this incident is
not only morally repugnant but also serves to make light of the
crime--and you, in an indirect way, become an accomplice to this
violence.

When threatening letters filled with a substance thought to be anthrax
were sent through the mail, this was widely considered an act of
terrorism. When it was determined that the substance contained in the
letters was not anthrax, the threat was taken no less seriously.
Your article serves to thwart the seriousness of the crime as well as
the letter of the law as well as widely accepted standards of decency.

I hope that you rethink this type of commentary in the future. And I
hope that you never suffer the feeling of having your life threatened
in such a serious and invasive way (you note that this letter was sent
to his home; where are we to feel more secure than this?). And I
certainly hope that if anything such as this should ever befall you,
your experience won't be shrugged off with a kiss on the cheek and a
lollipop and snarky columnist making light of the matter. I find it
disgraceful that you're a national journalist. In a postion such as
this, you owe your readers at least the common sense of taking crime
seriously.

I hope that you will reflect on this matter.

Sincerely,

Gabrielle

Gravatar I emailed Paula... and I politely ok. ripped her a new one.

Bill Oh Really claims FBI says he is on terrorist hit list.. pure bunk, but treated as if it's gospel from on high.

Keith Olbermann gets a letter with unknown substance, and does what everyone has been told to do since over 5 yrs ago, and he is portrayed as a panicky Chicken Little.

I seriously hope she gets at least reprimanded for this, if not outright fired. But, I know it won't happen. GOP media never punishes misinformation or slights.

THe good news, the powder was just soap, and KO is all right. Paula Froelich can go pound sand.

Gravatar Al Gore's Tennessee office received a similar letter several years ago.

In the local news report, one of the first responders was quoted as saying that this hoax anthrax letter sent to terrorize Al Gore was just one of 400 hoax anthrax letters sent to terrorize American citizens in that county.

400. One county.

Concerning the Clayton Waagner case (the escaped convict, a self-proclaimed member of the Army of God, who while on the run sent 500 hoax anthrax letters to progressive businesses), the trial was shifted from the Midwest to a federal court in Philadelphia.

I read an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer about the change of venue and sent the journalist an e-mail asking if the PI had any information on the exact number of anthrax letters (hoax or otherwise) mailed since the 9/11 attacks. You see, I saw a CNN blurb at the bottom of the TV screen in late 2001 that stated that the FBI had launched 15,000 investigations...just within a month or two after the first, lethal mailings occurred.

Anyway, surprisingly, the PI reporter sent an e-mail back to me, in which he stated that upper management at the PI (as at many other MSM outlets apparently) had chosen to quash much of the reporting about anthrax terrorist mailings...so as not to panic the public.

In other words, these (by and large) right-wing terrorist mailings continue, but they just aren't being reported by MSM outlets anymore, unless the recipient happens to be a higher-profile American citizen like Al Gore or Keith Olbermann.

Will the Bush administration, and Alberto Gonzales, go after these (by and large) right-wing terrorists mailing hoax anthrax letters? Hardly. Which could explain why the initial, deadly anthrax mailings that occurred in late 2001 have not been solved.

It would definitely be bad PR for the Bush administration, and many of their most rabid religious supporters, if it were discovered and disclosed that some right-wing, weaponized militia members were responsible for those late 2001 terrorist attacks through the US Postal Service...which still continue to this day.

So, the cover-up continues.

Gravatar Dear Paula,

I was alarmed to read your article about Keith Olberman receiving a letter he believed might contain anthrax. Fortunately he took the right steps and seeked help from a doctor and the proper authorities. I am glad Keith is ok and that he followed up.

Paula, your article attempted to offer a humorous perspective. I don't understand the humor. Could you explain it to me? What would be humorous about receiving anthrax in a letter? What would you do if you received what appeared could be a letter with anthrax in it? What would you advise other Americans to do if they received a letter of a similar nature as Keith Olberman? What would you advise your child to do if he received a similar letter?

I don't understand your ethics concerning this matter. How do you view the threat of anthrax?

Personally I believe your viewers should receive an apology from you and for God's sake don't mislead your viewers into believing that receiving a letter that potentially could be anthrax should be taken lightly. It just might kill them.

You are doing the public a grave disservice.

Gravatar Anthrax? Oh that old thing!

Gravatar Maybe Paul herself sent the anthrax letter to Olberman. She thought it would be pretty funny. Perhaps her article was her way of distancing herself from her first crime of sending the anthrax to Keith. Her second crime of course is writing an article such as she did.

Gravatar "...gave him a lollipop on his way out..."

Unnecessary, unwarranted reporting. I am not amused. We should record this down somewhere and make sure it comes back to haunt her as long as she feels she can raise her head and crow in future.

Gravatar Here is Paula shortly before she sent the anthrax letter to Keith Olberman. Paris Hilton had dropped her off at the mailbox. Paris later was arrested for Drunk Driving. All in a days work for Paula.

http://foliomag.com/templates/ Fo...onybourdain.jpg

Gravatar That's the Dark side of America right there. It's sickening, poor Keith. One supposes he knows now not to open "suspicious-looking" pieces of mail. Pathetic though what these Chimpy right-wingers will sink to because of their cult-like faith in the Chimp. 2 more years of the Chimp? Unbelievable.

Gravatar It's interesting that when the New York Times prints something, the wingnuts go crazy, but when the New York Post impedes an FBI investigation, it's all just hysterical.
Why aren't they investigated, along with Coulter's death threats to sitting judges?

Gravatar To really understand the mind of a Republican, one must do several things first:

1) Blow up frogs with firecrackers.
2) Kill kittens for medical research purposes.
3) Almost blow off the face of a lawyer one mistakes for a quail.

(Now, match up the preceding examples of actions indicative of a Republican mind with Bush, Frist and Cheney).

(And for extra points, please decide if the preceding examples describe A) a Republican, B) a psychopath or C) both a Republican and a psychopath.

If you guessed C), you got it correct.

And the answer to the first part is:

Bush killed frogs with firecrackers as a kid, showing his potential to be the president he has become.

Frist killed cats for dissection purposes, to become the senator he's become.

Cheney almost killed a lawyer he mistook for a big, big quail in a shotgun shooting accident.

Now, turn in your test paper and prepare to be renditioned to an undisclosed, overseas location.

Gravatar Is this the end of Olbermann as we have come to know him?

Gravatar Anyone tell that Vor kid that this isn't a Jr. High School playground? It must be great to be a repiglican- the RNC does all your thinking for you, you can just sit back and hate on homos and brown people without all that mental clutter.

Ms. Froelich

I know you'll want to dismiss this email as just another "loony leftie" but I hope you understand exactly what you're saying, and exactly who you're encouraging when you minimize the recent scare Keith Olbermann experienced when a wacko sent him a death threat in the mail.

Look, I'm not writing to sound holier-than-thou, like I'm sure some liberals are probably doing right now, I'm just seeing this spiteful rhetoric get way out of hand based on what? Political leanings? Because you disagree (and yes, I understand just how much we do disagree) you think it's fair, ethical, or find it, somehow, personally satisfying to make light of something like this?

It's difficult for me not to lose it here a little, because you're no idiot. You know what kind of zealots and backwoods sociopaths are out there looking for a little encouragement. I don't understand how you could become the kind of person that would agree to spit poison like that, for a paycheck, and probably little more, since I can't imagine you would genuinely wish physical harm on a, for the most part, total stranger. It's what you get paid to do, and I understand that, but as a liberal, and even considering the depth of my rage and resentment towards the GOP, I don't think I'd feel comfortable slinging the same kind of hate your way even if a paycheck was attached to it. Probably ended on a holier-than-thou note, but I can live with what I've said here, without feeling like I sacrificed one ounce of my dignity, or integrity.

Good luck. If you took the time to read this, then thanks.

Gravatar I loved how Keith called out Rupert Murdoch. Murdoch is beyond contempt.
Also, I figured that if Keith kept quiet about the letter, it was because it was being investigated. Great job NYPost, you vile piece of sputum, you.

Gravatar I am really pissed off about this.

I sent the following e-mail to this so-called "journalist" . . .

Dear Ms Froelich:

I read your words on the Crooks and Liars site and I’m appalled by your callous stupidity and lame attempt at humour.

This is never, ever “funny”. I worked at Australia Post just after the 2001 anthrax incidents. You will recall USPS workers died because things didn’t get taken seriously enough.

I had sorters come to me with envelopes that had split open and leaked powdery substances and, even though I believed it was obviously harmless, I had to follow rigid safety procedures. There were several incidents when we had to evacuate mail centres and “wash down” the staff.

I repeat, you are a stupid person and this is never, ever funny.

Gravatar Vor, it's past your bedtime. Time to turn off the light [deleted]

Edited By Siteowner

Gravatar I was sending my email right as Keith was reporting the story. Nicely said Mr. Olbermann.
It denotes a terrible lack of class, even for the Post, to make fun of a terrorist act. Death threats, whether or not they are real, are the very definition of terrorism.

Gravatar Time zones, et. al., and I'm sure everyone else has already packed up the bats and brass knuckles and toddled off to bed, however...

I agree with aquarius's argument to dennis that there is a fair difference a threatening letter and one that actually contains an unknown substance, but both should be taken seriously by legal authorities regardless of who received it (or what political direction they lean toward). There's an even bigger separation between posters on a blog thread 'venting' and actually sending a threatening letter that contains an unknown substance through the federal post. Just as there's also a big difference between posters on a blog thread stating opinions and a professional (only in the sense that she's being paid a salary) journalist on a New York newspaper that should be held to legal and ethical standards expressing her opinion.

And as much as I respect and admire the inestimable StrawBB, I hate to disagree with her on this point: dennis does have a reasonable argument. Those on the left who pooh-poohed death threats sent to Cyrus Nowrasteh, the director of 'Path to 9/11', have very little moral standing when they then turn around and yell foul play when it happens (albeit in a more sinister fashion) to Olbermann. Civil rights mean everyone. Protection under the law means everyone. Even (*shudder*) Bill O'Reilly... that is, if it actually happened, like, y'know 'for real' rather than being the inflated ramblings of a delusional drug-addled paranoiac.

But these posts ARE a public forum; there's no restricted entry, anyone can come to read anything anyone else writes. That it primarily attracts those of us on the left doesn't make it automatically an 'echo chamber'. I don't come here to vent - I come to find information, ideas, arguments, and - yes - friends. On both sides.

I have never (to the best of my knowledge) ever advocated or encouraged or threatened violence of any kind on anyone regardless of how angry I might feel. The site monitors seem to do a fairly decent job of deleting any posts that do stray over the boundries of acceptable vehemence, which seems to be more than quite a few other blogs do these days, particularly those on the right.

But right or left, if we do not defend with every moral fibre of our being the inalienable civil rights of people we don't like and don't agree with, then we won't deserve to have them preserved for ourselves. And that is what Bush and Co., and too many on the right who want to erode civil liberties in the name of national security, have forgotten. Please let us not follow that same path.

Gravatar While I find this kind of prank against KO reprehensible, I have to pose a question.

What are the chances someone with liberal tendencies did this?

It sure would make the right look bad. Gotta say, while reprehensible, it is an OLD political ploy...especially this close to election time.

Gravatar how anyone can make light of this is beyond me.

Gravatar Sent off an email to the "reporter" of that story. We should send as many as possible. I said in my email, "Would you have to been happier if Olbermann had opened the letter and died of anthrax? He took standard procautions that any sane person would in these times. You want to disagree with his politics? Fine. This is different. He deserves an apology."

I was sorely tempted to say other stuff but I refused to sink to the level of the opposition (notice I didn't call them the enemy - something they wouldn't hesitate to do when talking about us).

Let's get these people out of power, please!

Gravatar Jay - your questioning the chances of someone with liberal tendencies doing this is about as reprehensible as a right-wing reporter laughing it off as trivial. There's no way to tell if the person who did this is liberal or conservative - just evil and criminal.

And that should be enough. For any of us.

Gravatar I remember some asshole back in late 2001 put some white powder in a co-worker's locker at a local yokel hospital, causing a lot of trouble for the police and hospital. I think the aforementioned asshole is outta jail by now.

While I agree with that sentiment, unfortunately me thinks the lady doth protest too much. It's not like there has been alot of that kind of critical thinking going on here. I'm not blaming anyone. Simply speculating on an idea that hasnt as of yet been spoken here.

Gravatar I'm just shocked no one's blamed Karl Rove. Maybe Olby is saving that for tonight's Very Special Comments.

Gravatar i couldn't come up with much for the hackette so i just dropped her a line to tell her she sucks.

Gravatar It's not like there has been alot of that kind of critical thinking going on here.

Oh, puhleez. Jay you've exhibited about as much critical thinking as Nancy Fuqing Grace. The perp is probably some young, white, male, teenaged loner all hepped up on Geezus and Bill O'Loofah. The pimply peckerwood probably doesn't have the balls to go all Goth and pull a Columbine or join the military to go experience His Dear Leader's Excellent Eyerackee Adventure first hand. Of course, it's probably this jackass ain't in the military because the military has enough problems on its hands as it is without having yet another asshole joining the ranks.

Your reverse Reichstag fire scenario is just lame ass rite wing wishful thinkin'. Gas prices suddenly "dropping" before the festivities in November -- now, there's a Reichstag fire scenario fer ya.

Gravatar to cheer you all up; please see in your heads ann coulter running from a cream pie.

Gravatar Jay | 09.28.06 - 8:41 am | #

Someone has already suggested this yesterday. It may have been you. However, like I said yesterday this sounds like someone trying to accuse KO and Democrats of stealing a scheme from Karl Rove's playbook.

This is just another example of Conservatives pumping up their chests as the manly ones, though most in office now are draft dodgers or AWOL, and claiming that the liberals and the Democrats are all weak. In effect, it ties into the ABC propaganda of a couple of weeks ago.

Gravatar Your reverse Reichstag fire scenario is just lame ass rite wing wishful thinkin'. Gas prices suddenly "dropping" before the festivities in November -- now, there's a Reichstag fire scenario fer ya.
An Enquiring Mind

Nothing like an open and free exchange of ideas to brighten the day....

So I think my question has been answered. It's OK to assume some Right Wing nut job did this, but we dare not even entertain the thought of this being a backhanded political ploy from the left.

Gravatar Someone has already suggested this yesterday. It may have been you. However, like I said yesterday this sounds like someone trying to accuse KO and Democrats of stealing a scheme from Karl Rove's playbook.

No, wasnt me. However I dont think that it is outside the realm of possibilities. I've heard alot lately about how the left needs to play the same game as the right to move on up come election day. It simply seems like a plausable idea.

Frankly, with the kind of nonsense perpetrated on KO, party no longer matters. As far as I'm concern, someone simply wanted to rattle a cage to see their accomplishment on the news. 15 minutes of fame and all that....

Gravatar Did Cyrus Nowrasteh ever file charges, or provide any written letters of email printoffs of his threats, or were they baseless like Bill O'Really? (Why do we never see O'Really and Clinton in the same room together? They have the same first name, and may be the same guy. Inquiring minds want to know.)

Gravatar Here's the letter I sent to the Post:

So, you find it amusing that a journalist was a victim of a federal crime and an act of terrorism? That he "flipped out" when he opened a letter and white powder fell out? I'm sure you'd react with perfect grace and dignity is his shoes. Oh, and wasn't the comment about the lollipop cute? Gosh, you're ever so clever and witty. You must be the life of the party. The Nazi party, that is! [b'dum CRASH]. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, thank you! Hey, that was at least as funny as you think your article was.

Gravatar ysbad,

O'Reilly did have Carville and The Forehead on his show last night. He said he'd love to have Bill Clinton on his show. Don't think you'll see that happening for a while, though.

Gravatar HOW DID FOX NEWS KNOW??? HOW COME FOX NEWS WERE THE ONLY REPORTERS THERE???

In all the hubub about the sickly snarkiness, which was disgusting, I think focusing on the investigation and the pricks who ran and vetted the story could be a good lead, at least until it leads to more or is a confirmed dead-end. The only reason Bush is lasting this long is that the White House is in serious cahoots with the right-wing media, and that could mean threatening Keith (or even killing him, as if that's a surprise for these guys) and sending their own journalist out to break the story and help spin the initial response.

This forces the much of the mainstream media to scramble to concoct their own weak set of "talking points" spinning their own weak lies and omissions that keep the public debate within a safe and polarized framework. They use or invent the barest of selectively edited and delivered "facts" with little history or context to prevent the public from understanding what's really happening and who's behind it. Then they endorse criticism that trains people to hate "people" just for being the horrible "people" who "weaken our resolve and endanger the troops" when they believe what they believe, and we have the uninformed calling the most informed "un-American" for trying to inform them.

This fascist dumbing-down is eroding our natural optimism, fraternal trust and respect over time, leaving us vulnerable to the most confident and consistent "talking points" message from the right-wing media's "echo effect", the perfect fascist tool for controlling men and minds. Since having b-lls works, the narrow confines of every debate keep moving to the "right" while the "left" are given positions that are set up to lose, and kept from learning about things like "depleted uranium" that can destroy any right-wing arguments by proving that the U.S. military-industrial warlords don't give a silent damn about the "troops".

This lack of knowledge forces many normal people to make stupid genocidal arguments, like "it was a mistake, but we're in Iraq and Afhganistan so we need to stay to finish the job", when we're not doing any sort of job they can begin to describe. Incidentally, we are doing almost nothing to give the Iraqi's and Afghani's any jobs either, or you'd hear government propagandists brag about it to help hide their other crimes.

There is nothing good happening over there with both soldiers and civilians stuck in a meat-grinder of radiation sickness and death and unprotected by any press or public scrutiny, this is a war crime of Hitlerian calculations, and guys like Keith who have the charisma to make people realize it and wake up are in danger. We need to come out swinging, and remember that many of these guys are rich and hobknob with the elite, Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones even made "Sweet Neo-Con" a couple of years ago, and our artists and leaders know the score and know we're running out of time...
