FOX and O'Reilly did the same thing. On his show a graphic and heading itentifying FOley as D-FL flashed 3 times throughout his broadcast. A staunch republican show like the O'Reilly factor certainly knows who's a dem and who's a republican. It's one of their talking points, since all other ones aren't sticking. Just disown him and pretent he's one of the other guys. I think this finally shows some desperation on their part.

Jesus Christ. AP is as stupid as Fox News. Not only can they not remember what party Mark Foley (and now Dennis Hastert) belongs to, but Brit Hume can't do basic subtraction either. C&L readers can try in their own homes -- unlike Mythbusters, this isn't dangerous: Subtract 1973 (the year Monica Lewinsky was born) from 1995 (the year she went down on The Clenis). Most competent non-goddamn-idiots get the answer 22. But Brit Hume kept getting 19. I think that's the answer Rush Limbaugh got as well. 1. Most people don't pay all that much attention. It's "Dead Parrot Obvious" to bloggers and political junkies, but go take a scientific poll of citizens - or hell, of voters - to see which party they think controls the House. I'd wager money that the small number of voters who really don't know, or who think those evil Democrats do, is large enough to sway an election. "Misprints" create confusion. Get people asking which party these people really belong to, and, well, you've got them asking and wondering.
2. The issue switches from what the Republicans did/are doing to what the media is doing. If we can't trust them to get a simple fact like this correct, how can we trust them to really get the story's details correct? Gee, maybe the Republicans aren't so bad after all. We don't really know, do we? (For the nuance-impaired, that's a hypothetical fool having that stream of unconsciousness, not me.)
Good news? It's a sign of the Grand Oil Party's sheer desperation.
Will it work? I'm still wondering just how the Democrats are going to screw this up.

Incidentally, this highlights another concern recently raised by Media Matters' Paul Waldman on Joe Scarborough's show. Covering whether FUX News is actually biased toward the right, Scarborough pressed Waldman on whether it actually mattered, since FUX's ratings were dismal compared to those of the big three free commercial network's nightly newscasts. Waldman explained that when FUX deliberately fux something up or covers a sensational, but unimportant story, the germ then spreads to other networks, until everyone is talking about it.
I think this is a perfect example. FUX News labels Foley a Democrat. Some tired and overworked, but otherwise honorable, copy editor at a wire service thinks he erred in putting an R next to the former Congressman's name, so he switches it and sends it over the wire, by when it's too late to do anything about it.
Then some other tired copy editor, in a less-than-stellar moment, has a moment of faux logic, and thinks, well, if Foley is D, and he's in the same party as Hastert, Hastert must be a D. It goes out over another wire.
I have no inside knowledge, so I don't know how these "mistakes" were actually made, but Waldman's comments got me thinking through some possible scenarios.
Wanna see the Scarborough clip? Click here for WMV, and here for Quicktime. Be forewarned, however, Michael Smerconish is on the panel, and his comments about why FUX is the "great equalizer" will make your blood boil. (Of course, the clip within the clip of Carville and Begala on O'Really? is pretty funny.)

I take it very seriously, tigsnort. It's too convenient for them to not be able to differentiate between parties when it very suddenly suits them.If it's not deliberate, then it's stupidity or sloppiness on the part of news-gatherers and fact-checkers. And it needs to be highlighted in bright, garish colors that the people reporting the state of the world to us not only can't figure out if the party in power of the House for THE LAST TWELVE YEARS starts with a D or an R, nor can they apparently accurately subtract 1973 from 1995 and achieve the result of 22, instead somehow preferring 19. If they can't figure those things out, how can we trust them to get other important facts straight? Who started the war with Iraq? Who attacked the U.S. in 2001? What party ran the country as our debt went through the roof? What did our President say during his State of the Union Address in 2003?

Foley and Scientology: disgraced congressman linked to CoS?
Here's a snip from a post on citynoise.org:
There's this, from CNN.com:
"An attorney for Foley, a Florida Republican, confirmed Monday that the former congressman is in an alcoholism treatment center. The fax was apparently sent from Clearwater, Florida, but Roth would not say if that's where Foley is being treated."
So, apparently Foley has gone to a detox center in Clearwater, Fl. What's in Clearwater? Scientologists! So, I followed my intuition and did a little Googling, thinking perhaps Foley is drying out with the Sea Org there. This is what I uncovered:

Good Old Associated Press ...[Dobson] touched on the uproar over former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley, D-Florida, who resigned Friday in a scandal over electronic messages he sent to former teenage male congressional pages.
The party affiliation that dare not speak its name. Late Update: As of about 12:18 PM, the version of the AP story I linked to at the San Jose Mercury News has been corrected. But it must have been what the AP sent out over the wire. So I'm sure there are million more examples of it still out there. http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com...ives/

The desperation is quite obvious. The GOP is calling in every favor they have from the Liberal Media. Makes sense to do this as many Americans don't pay too much attention to who is what party in areas outside their own. Rove is good.
In The Cold - I read that Google was Dem, where did you get the Repug label for them? I know they started lobbying the GOP about Net Neutrality but that makes sense since the GOP doesn't respond to logic or facts but digs cash. Well, and apparently teenage boys have an affect as well but I doubt Google would offer that...

Sad truth is that the 'D' and 'R' are often misplaced. Do a Google search for "Nancy Pelosi (R-CA)"
That said, I still never put it past the fake news channel to try the subliminal slime trick. Usually they're a little more obvious - perhaps they now have to trick their audience in more subtle ways. Call it progress...

There was a Tom Foley who was speaker of the house in 1995. He was a Democrat. This could be incompetence at the producer level or an effort to confuse the situation. Remember, it's possible to fool some of the people all the time.

I have a question for the folks who are harping on Google for this.
How does Google News work? I mean, Google doesn't write the articles. And somehow I doubt they even proofread them either. It's not even their copyrighted stuff to edit. Isn't Google News just a program full of complicated algorithms that spits out top stories in various categories and contains links to related articles from news sources around the world?
I honestly don't know. It's hardly my area of expertise, so I could be totally off base here. But it seems to me that Google itself isn't culpable for these "mistakes."

There are tons of careless idiots out there who, even in the midst of an epic scandal affrecting REPUBLICANS, are so stupid and careless that even on their "progressive" political blogs they mislabel Hastert as "D-IL". When I first saw it on O'Reilly I thought it was intentional. But seeing these other errors I realize that its just the work of random idiots on both sides of the issue. Maybe it was a mistake on the O'Bullshit Factor as well. I expect that from him, but what excuse do these other people have?

"REP. DENNIS HASTERT (D-IL), HOUSE SPEAKER: It's something that there was a demand for it, and the RNC, obviously, thought it was important do, and they did it, and probably, they will think twice the next time they do it."

Foley's a Democrat, Hastert is a Democrat, but also Hastert, as Speaker, is the natural target for Reagan Republican anger at the Rapepublicans.
So, October Surprise #1, Rapepublicans burn their own guy, the gay, IN EFFIGY, and then BLAME THE DEMOCRATS remove the Speaker ("It's all partisan up here."), and then
BASH THE GAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY, or else until the next October Surprise.
It's cold, it's ruthless, but it kills two birds at the same time, and at the same time is an exercise in Doublespeak.
They use the vote-fraud to steal the House ANYHOW, blame the Dems and the Gays (=), call them alcoholics (cue "Ted Kennedy" jokes any day now from Limbaugh), bash the Catholic Church,
And Blame the Whole Damn Thing on liberalism that doesn't burn Dem fags like Foley at the stake, or alternately, the End Times, brought on by turning from God, by not burning Dem fags at the stake.
And, then, meanwhile, the MASSIVE Iraq warcrimes, the massive Lebanon warcrimes, the impending war with Iran and Syria, and the deteriorating conditions in Afghanistan are off the front pages.
It's brilliant, evil, complex, and simple.
Follow it up with October Surprise #2, aka Bin Laden's Body, and Mission Accomplished.

I have a solution: All members of congress shall have the letter that represents their party branded onto their forehead.
